The look In Inuyasha's eyes says he wants to say something. Needs to say something. So why doesn't he? After finding all the jewel shards and getting rid of Naraku, they all said their goodbyes.
Miroku went off with Sango and Kohaku (now that Kohaku's saved from Naraku's raft and lives safely). Miroku claims that he wants to `see' Sango and Kohaku on their way, but Kagome knows he carries a flame for Sango and her for him.
Miroku even stopped being a perve (most of the time). Shippo went off to find other family members of his fox tribe. Kagome had a hard time seeing them all go, and she'll miss them dearly.
But now all who was left was Kagome and Inuyasha. They stood at the well ready to say goodbye. Inuyasha held the Shikon jewel in his kimono to keep it safe. He had yet to turn into a full fledge demon.
But Kagome knew it was what he wanted more than anything. She just wished he'd speak his mind already instead of staring at her so intently.
Finally she asked, “What?”
Still he looked undecided as he said, “Kagome . . .”
“Yes.”
“I wanted to know . . . Look, I was wondering . . .”
“Inuyasha, what is it?”
The look on his face tells Kagome he's battling with himself. Wondering what place she held in his heart she said, “I bet you can't wait to turn into a full demon, huh?'
His honey toned eyes showed surprise as if he forgot that's what he's been longing for. Kagome wanted to know what he was thinking, but he abruptly said, “We'd better get you back home.”
Kagome was surprised and hurt at his sudden change of mood. He seemed angry—and was quiet. Not usual for Inuyasha!
He had to take Kagome back through the well to her era because with out the jewel she'd be stuck.
Would that be such a bad thing? Kagome knew she'd miss her family more than anything. And she knew how ruthless Inuyasha could be as a full demon. Not that she hasn't been able to handle him before, but to live with a full demon . . . Whoa!
Wait a minute now. Kagome doesn't even know if Inuyasha wants her to stay, let alone wants her to live with him. If he don't tell her to stay or how he feels Kagome might as well say goodbye to him.
But it still pains her; after all, she loves him. Inuyasha gently grabbed her by the waist and jumped into the well with her. Kagome couldn't help but love being close to feel Inuyasha's warmth and strength, even though it was not the way she would prefer.
Falling through the sparkling porthole was enough to bring tears to her eyes. This is it. At the end off the well's aperture she'd have to say goodbye to him forever.
The two of them finally landed at the bottom of the well in Kagome's era. Inuyasha jumped up with Kagome clinging to his back for perhaps the last time.
He set her down softly and she felt reluctant to let her go. Why doesn't he say something when all Kagome wants to do is confess her love for him? Why doesn't she say something?
Out of fear, she thought, fear of rejection. Kagome didn't want him to tell her he doesn't love her and that he never has. She didn't want to hear that she's been nothing to him but a finder for the jewel shards and now that the jewel is whole he doesn't need her anymore.
She met his golden gaze with hers. He stared at her steadily but still said nothing. Why won't he say something?
If this is the last time she's going to see him than she can't help it. Kagome dropped her yellow back pack full of supplies and threw her arms around him to hug him tightly, her unshed tears now leaked from her eyes as she tried her hardest not to sob.
Slowly Inuyasha's strong arms enveloped her and Kagome felt him tremble. From what? Love? Or irritation?
For a second longer she allowed herself to hold him. To feel his heat and strength pressed close to her. Kagome then pulled away abruptly. Not wanting to feel his rejection when he leaves her, she grabbed her bag and ran up the stairs of the small house that held the well and out the door, leaving Inuyasha to stare after her, her heart remaining there with him.
***********
Inuyasha stared after Kagome, wanting to call her back. Go after her, anything to keep her at his side. Why didn't he tell her how he felt? Why didn't he order her to stay? But he knew she had her own life and her own family and friend's in her era. It wouldn't be fair to ask her to stay just because he'll miss her.
But when she hugged him he never wanted to let her go. She felt so tantalizing pressed against him, her smell so . . . familiar. Kagome smelled of sweetgrass and chamomile. He would never forget her smell.
Despondently, he jumped into the well and traveled back to his own time—without Kagome.
No more Kagome. No more adventures with her. The jewel was now whole, and there was no real reason for her to come back. No possible way for her to come back. Inuyasha had the jewel now. So only he could travel back and forth through eras.
But Kagome hadn't seemed to want him with her.
She would have said something, wouldn't she have? But he didn't belong in her era, and she . . . She belongs with him no matter where they were.
Damn, he should go after her. But as he jumped out of the well he saw Koga waiting for him.
His voice was curt and angry as he asked, “What the hell do you want, wolf?”
“Where's Kagome, mutt?”
Inuyasha didn't mind telling Koga. At least if he didn't get to have Kagome, Koga didn't either. “She went home,” he stated as flatly as he could.
“For good?” Koga asked in disbelief.
“Yep.” Inuyasha hid the pain in his voice.
Koga's blue eyes flashed with anger. “Damn you, mutt. How could you be so stupid? I was supposed to marry her!”
Inuyasha's temper flared. “Even though the shards are back together?”
“What are you talking about?”
“I thought all you wanted her for was to find the shards for you.”
“Why don't you shut your face, mutt. That's no all I wanted her for. I love her! Her beautiful face, her soft voice, and sweet smell. Kagome would have been the perfect mate for me.”
“Yeah? Well what makes you so sure she'd have you anyway?”
“Because, mutt, I treat her right, when all you've ever done was yelled and insulted her. You say I wanted her for a shard finder, well look closely at yourself, Inuyasha, isn't that the only reason you even kept her around?”
Inuyasha wanted to disagree, but he knew Koga was right. He could've been a lot nicer to Kagome, and let it be known that she wasn't there only as a finder of the jewel shards.
But he had always felt that to show you care for someone was to show weakness. So he tried not to show he cared to often.
Since Koga had seen his bitterness, surely Kagome had also. Any thought he had of going back to retrieve her vanished. He probably hurt her feelings too many times to count. She probably wanted nothing to do with him and he didn't blame her.
He's been such a bastard.
He walked away from Koga ignoring his challenge to fight. Any other day he would have ripped that smelly wolf to shreds, but right now his heart was broken and Kagome held the pieces.
