DISCLAIMER: I DON'T OWN INUYASHA
A/N: i wanted to write this story for myself for i had always imagined what it would be like if Kagome and Inuyasha were left alone after Naraku had been beaten. But what i hadn't thought through was how they would go about staying together. So now i wrote what i thought would have happened once Kagome would have to go home. And i made up to the best of my imaginings how she would come across the jewel again. So here it is, enjoy!
Six years later
Kagome put her magnifying glass back in her bag and placed the ancient artifact back into its exhibit case. They were rosary beads and were about one hundred years old.
They seemed to have belonged to a monk, and Kagome had just analyzed them to find out that they're genuine not a charlatan. That's what she does here at the Japan's `Museum of natural history'.
Kagome examines historical artifacts to make sure they are authentic before submitting them to display cases and having them put of display.
It's what she's best at! After all, she's been to the futile era long enough to know the difference between real and fake rosary beads and such.
After middle school Kagome went on to high school and graduated at the top of her class. (At least she missed less school since she was no longer traveling to the past.) After high school Kagome went on to college to study Japanese history and she graduate with honors and two years early for making such excellent progress ahead of the other students. (Having visited the past might have helped . . . A little.)
Working with objects from history, especially the futile era is sometimes hard. Kagome still misses Sango, Miroku, Shippo, and Kirara. After all she's spent nearly a year with them.
Sometimes she'll be walking to work and think she sees people who resemble them, but when she takes a second look she'll realize she was mistaken.
But most of all, Kagome dreams of a guy in a red kimono with silver hair, honey eyes, and the cutest dog ears she's ever seen. But when she wakes and the dream fades she's still . . . alone.
Kagome shares an apartment with a friend from college, a Girl named Sio. She rarely talks to her three best friends from middle school since they're all so busy. But once in a while they'll all make time to go to lunch, just like old times.
“Kagome? You ready to go?” Hojo asked her.
He chose the same profession as her and they've been good friends ever since middle school. Hojo always hints that he'd like to be more, but Kagome ignores his flirty innuendos like she's done to every other guy who has tried to hit on her.
She feels like saving herself for someone special, and that fate may allow her to see that someone again.
Kagome gather up her things and Hojo walked her to the subway station. “Are you sure I can't give you a ride, Kagome?” Hojo asked for the third time in the last five minutes.
“I'm sure Hojo. I've been taking the subway since I was fifteen.”
He looked concerned still, but didn't press the issue.
“Oh! How's your headache?”
Kagome hadn't really had a headache yesterday, she just told him that to evade going out with him. She didn't want to hurt his feelings, but he just wasn't for her.
“My head feels much better, thank you,” she lied.
“Well here are some eyes of newt for you just in case, just mix them in some juice and drink up. It'll keep any headaches you may have from coming back.”
Kagome tried not to gag when Hojo handed her the bag of little dried up lizard eyeballs. “Gee, uh . . . Thanks, Hojo.” Kagome saw the subway car finally coming toward the plat form they stood on.
Kagome sighed with relief. Soon she'd be able to get ride of these nasty little eyeballs.
“Listen, Kagome . . .” Hojo said when he too noticed the train coming. “Maybe we can go to dinner tomorrow evening. I know the perfect place . . .” Kagome liked Hojo as a friend. She really did. He was kind, sensitive, and smart. Just not her type.
Kagome always found herself comparing him to Inuyasha, and Hojo would always come up short. Kagome saw no reason to lead him on.
“Sorry, Hojo. I'm busy and I just don't think it's a good idea.”
“What if I promise to keep it on a friendly based level only?” He looked so genuine that she knew he wouldn't try anything. What was a little dinner with a friend?
“Okay, sure,” she heard herself agree. Kagome set a time with Hojo for the next day after work and then got onto the subway to head home to her lonely apartment.
***********
The next day at work Kagome didn't have much to examine. This was what she considered a `slow day', when nothing could get done if there was nothing to examine.
Finally she caught a break from boredom when Mitya, a fellow employee, dropped off a small, carefully wrapped package at her work desk.
Kagome attentively opened the package ready to examine it when she stopped short. The box was now open and a small white/lavender orb stared back at her.
It was the Shikon jewel.
Kagome couldn't believe her eyes. She thought she'd never see it again. She had figured Inuyasha had used it right away to become full demon.
Does that mean Inuyasha didn't use the jewel for that purpose? Did he lose it? Or didn't something horrible happen to him to force the jewel out of his possession?
The jewel somehow resurfaced and was no longer in Inuyasha's strong hands.
But thinking Inuyasha could have been hurt or worse didn't sit right with Kagome. She needed to know what happened to him. And suddenly work didn't matter, nothing did. Only Inuyasha.
Kagome had to see with her own eyes that he was okay before she could ever rest peacefully again. Sticking the jewel safely in her pocket Kagome seen Hojo walking toward her. Luckily he appeared not to have noticed.
“Hey, Kagome. Ready to go to dinner?”
“UH, Sorry, Hojo. Gotta go.” Kagome ran out of the building before he had a chance to question her. Poor Hojo, ever since middle school she's had to stand him up. But the reason has always been a good one: To get back to Inuyasha.
Kagome hopped on the subway and headed to her apartment for some changes of clothes, food, and like old times, a first aid kit.
The old well was only a few blocks from her place so she walked carrying her black shoulder bag with her supplies. Kagome hoped her attire wouldn't slow her down as she wore a white gypsy skirt and a yellow tank top with flat shoes.
Assuming she'd be okay she went into the little shack that housed the well and ran down the stairs. At the bottom of the steps was the old well, looking as ancient and glorious as ever.
Kagome was very nervous and knew it would be dangerous to be carrying the jewel in that era again, but she brought her old bow and arrow just in case.
Hesitating before she jumped into the well, Kagome wondered if it would work, or if her feet would hit nothing but solid ground. Throwing caution to the wind, Kagome jumped. When she opened her eyes she was ecstatic to see the sparkling blue of the ethereal porthole.
Reaching the well in the futile era Kagome climbed out and asked herself if she should just find Inuyasha and spy on him to see if he's well, or make her presence known.
For now she'll just decide as she goes. Now only one question left: Where would she find him?
***********
Walking a small distance Kagome hoped Kaede still lived in the same small village. She needed to find her to see if she's seen Inuyasha of perhaps knows where he is.
She spotted Kaede near her small hut. She looked a bit older, but still the same. Kagome approached her and she looked up from her task of mixing some kind of ointment. “Kagome? What are ye doing here, child? I thought ye left years ago.”
Kagome smiled kindly. “I did. But I found the jewel in my world and wanted to come back.”
Kaede looked concerned. “Ye should not be carrying the jewel around here, Kagome. Many demons still look to possess it.”
“Don't worry, I'll be careful.” Kagome wanted to find Inuyasha as quickly as possible, so she asked, “So . . . how's Inuyasha? Have you seen him lately?”
Lady Kaede didn't look surprised by Kagome's question. “I rarely see him around. Ever since you all parted ways, Lord Inuyasha has seemed so . . . sad.”
That surprised Kagome. Inuyasha? Sad? “Do you know where I can find him?”
“The last time I seen him he was at the tree of ages.”
That was where Kagome first met Inuyasha. But that was also the tree that Kikyo pinned him to when Naraku had tricked them both. Was he missing Kikyo or Kagome? She pushed her jealousy down trying to understand as always.
Kagome said farewell to Kaede and made her way out of the village. Kagome found the forest that the tree resided in and began walking toward it. So many times she had walked by this tree in her era and missed Inuyasha remembering the day they first met. When she freed him from the tree and Kikyo's arrow.
Many times she had thought she heard his voice through the tree as she had once before . . . but it proved only to be the wind.
He was so distant and talked insolently then, too. But she knew that was just Inuyasha's way. Was he still rough spoken? Did he look the same? All Kagome's thoughts ceased as the tree came into view.
Her breath caught in her throat as she seen a silhouette in the tree, his silver hair sparkled against the sun. Kagome stayed hidden behind another large tree at the sight of him. She couldn't see his face, but she knew it was him.
Her body and soul tingled in responsiveness. She couldn't move. All she could do was stare at the shape of him sitting high on the tree branch like he always used to.
He seemed to be thinking as he just stared off into the distance and sat serenely.
Kagome didn't know how long either of them sat there, but it grew dark and she could no longer see him.
Kagome grew tired and laid down in her sleeping bag on the ground wishing she could build a fire to keep herself warm, but she didn't want to make her presence known. Using her bag as a pillow, Kagome hoped that when she awoke Inuyasha would still be there . . .
A/N: i'm not sure if there's a museum of natural history in Japan, but in my story there is. Just wanted to clear that up. Next chapter Kagome will actually talk to Inuyasha, so don't worry. Thanks and review please. =]
