Friday not only meant the end of the week, but also the fact that I had made it an entire week at school and Inuyasha had been human for a week as well. It had been interesting, Inuyasha still helped out and my mother and I seemed to get along just fine.
We no longer discussed my studies or sleeping arrangements and seemed to swing back into our old routines. Sota of course was totally ecstatic to have had Inuyasha for so long and not have to hide his idol when his friends came over.
And Inuyasha seemed to actually loosen up. For almost the entire week there were no mentions of Naraku or comments on how he hated being human. We didn't fight hardly any, if we did it was over the dumbest of things and we made up quickly and the S word didn't seem to be in my vocabulary anymore.
I wouldn't have said that things were dull; it was just odd for us to not have a yelling match ending with Inuyasha face down in the ground. Deep down maybe a little part of me was sad to not have that anymore, because after all that was who Inuyasha was. This side of him was only easier to get along with, and sweeter. There was no sense in getting attached, in three weeks the next full moon would rise and this would all be over. Things would just go back to the way they were.
Even though that was getting us no where.
Making my way up the shrine steps I noticed the transformation the grounds had taken. The fence was neatly painted, the grounds spotless, and the old well house seemed to be the cleanest of them all.
“Mama I'm home!” I shouted into the house. Closing the door behind me I made my way around looking for any source of life. Strangely it was all quiet. Where was Inuyasha? He couldn't have gone back without me.
Looking into my mother's bedroom I caught her in the middle of ending a phone conversation. “Yes, thank you again Mr. Yamanaski.”
What in the world would she be doing talking to my head master?
“Mama?”
When she looked at me, I became even more worried; her face seemed eerily sad and disappointed.
“What's wrong mama?”
Sitting on the edge of her bed she quietly began speaking, “Were you just not going to tell me?”
“Tell you what?” This conversation was going in circles.
“You know I thought that we were getting a long better and that you would start letting me into your life a bit more. I know that we don't talk and you're never home, but I kind of hoped we could still be open with each other.”
“Mama just tell me what did I do?” I asked irritated at how she was becoming the victim and I didn't even know what the hell I'd done.
“Why didn't you tell me anything about the autumn formal?” her voice small and her eyes seemed to brim with tears.
“Are you kidding me? You're hurt about me not going?”
Maybe she had seen that this was something not to be overreacting about because she suddenly straightened up and brushed her eyes. That was what I was hoping for anyway.
“Kagome there are may events in a mother's life that she looks forward to planning for her daughter. The first is her wedding, and the next is her autumn formal. And now you're going to rip me from one of them. Kagome do you realize that this is your only opportunity to go to attend such a formal? Next year you'll be going to college and you probably won't get to see your friends again have you even thought this through?”
I realized she was quite upset and there was no telling how long she was going to battle me on this one.
“Mama I just didn't see what the big deal was. I hardly see my friends and we're not so attached anymore. Frankly, after all the things I've been through this just didn't seem like it was even important, much less to inform you of it.”
Her face took on another transformation and I knew I was in big trouble; she was pulling out her version of the puppy dog look. “Kagome sweetheart, I'm sorry I overreacted, it was just when Mr. Yamanaski called and asked me to chaperone I felt so left out of your life. You and I use to talk about all of the social events going on at your school and you loved it when I was involved. And now I feel like you don't want me involved anymore.”
“Mom-
“Kagome would you please do your mom a favor and consider going to this formal? I know it may not seem like a big deal to you, but for me it was one of the most memorable days of my life.” Patting the bed next to her she said, “ Kagome sit with me.”
I took in a deep breath and sat with my mother on the edge of the bed, knowing that the battle had been lost.
“I'll never forget my autumn formal; the whole evening had been so magical, and it was also your father's last night in Tokyo before he was going to be relocated with the navy. Even though it was a sad night, we danced it away and just enjoyed each others company before he had to leave. When they announced that it was the last song I didn't want the night to end, and you can imagine my surprise when your father led me away from the dance floor and took me to the oldest cherry blossom on campus and asked me to marry him, promising to come home safe.”
She held my hand now, not looking at me and I knew she wanted to cry. My father's death had been hard on her and memories of him always shook her up. She turned to me and just as I had suspected, her eyes were full of tears.
“Kagome, I'm not saying to go because I think you'll be reliving our fairy tale. I mean it's not like Inuyasha would propose to you the same way your father did.”
Ouch.
“All I'm saying is, you never know how things could go, and 10 years down the line I don't want you to regret not going. So would you please consider it?”
Boy was I a sucker for my crying mother.
“No.”
“But
“I won't consider it because I've already decided to go.”
Her face lit up like a 100 watt light bulb and she pulled me into a bone crushing hug. “Sweetie I promise you won't regret this; you'll have so much fun.” She led me out of the bedroom going towards the kitchen, all the while making a list of what I was going to need. As I watched her and her mind at work, I realized that my mother was just one of those people that liked to be needed.
Sitting on the barstool by the counter, she continued naming off items and then she said, “Oh no! You need a date!” But as soon as she had said that, the outside door slid open and in walked a very muddy Inuyasha and Sota.
“Oh wait you can take Inuyasha!” Smiling the evil woman known as my mother began naming off even more preparations muttering how it was such short notice and that she should have been notified sooner.
“Take me where?” asked a confused Inuyasha.
Now how in the hell was I suppose to talk him into this one. Must escape this situation.
“Why don't you two go take a shower, you're getting the floor filthy.”
Giving me an -I'm not convinced look- he simply pulled Sota along leading them upstairs. Turning to my mother I caught her staring at me with a Cheshire cat smile. “What's that smile for?”
“Who knows maybe this will turn out like your father and I.”
“Moooommm, how can you say that! I really don't expect Inuyasha to propose to me under the same tree that daddy did to you!”
My mother's face fell and as I wondered what I could have possibly said, I noticed that she wasn't looking at me; she was looking directly behind me. Turning very slowly in my chair I was practically face to face with still dirty, shirtless, Inuyasha.
When our eyes met he gave me a predatory smile before asking, “Where were you expecting me to propose to you at?”
And my heart, and breathing and any other kind of bodily function stopped. I felt like sinking into my chair, turning into a pile of goo and sliding my way out of the house and under a rock.
Embarrassment didn't begin to cover it and I was there, with my mouth open, face pink and completely mortified that he had caught our conversation. So I did the only thing that got me out of these situations.
“SIT!”
And as his face slammed into the ground I ran into my room cursing my luck and wondering when Inuyasha learned to smile like that.

Hi! I'm soooo sorry I didn't update sooner but had some stuff come up. Hope this chapter wasn't too disappointing short. Anyway! Thanks to my reviewers, and I decided on making them go to the dance after all. But don't worry, the story should pick up here pretty soon. Thanks again and keep those reviews coming, they're my motivation. ^_^
