After being in the Feudal Era for three years, Kagome had finally become adjusted and used to the fact that she would probably never get to go home. Of course, she hadn't given up hope. She had always been a daddy's girl and she missed him more than anyone. Oh how she ached to go home and be with her family. However, as long as she had Inuyasha, she didn't feel so bad. She very seldom saw Sesshomaru. When she did, he acted as if he didn't even detect her presence. She felt a little hurt to be honest, but she didn't let it show. She had told Inuyasha about it, but he just told her that Sesshomaru wasn't the type to show feelings or anything.
Ever since he had left Kagome with Kaede, he had felt bad about it. He felt as if he had neglected her. Each time he saw her now, he wanted to walk over to her, pick her up, and hug her to his chest. Each time he saw her, he saw how much she was growing. She was now nine years old and quite a bit taller. He could tell just by looking at her that she was going to be an extreme beauty when she got older. He wanted to know what had been going on in her life. He needed reassurance that he had done the right thing by leaving her with Kaede. He had seen her with Inuyasha on numerous occasions and worried that his brother would be a bad influence on her. However, he saw how protective Inuyasha was over the girl and how close they were and it helped to ease his worries somewhat. He still couldn't understand why he was so concerned over a dumb human. Yet, every time he saw her, he couldn't help but watch her....He had even sunk so low as to leave some money with Kaede for her.
Maybe this is why he had taken a little girl named Rin into his care. When he had discovered here laying in the forest, almost dead, he immediately felt the urge to protect her. He bent down to feel her pulse and found out she was dead. She had been beaten to death. By the looks of it, it had been done by a human. Images of Kagome had run through his head. Her big blue eyes, her sweet childish voice....Without hesitation, he lifted his Tensaiga and brought it down across her body. The Tensaiga had been a gift to him from his Father. It had the ability to return life to a being. With this being done, the little girl began to move and looked up at him. It had been this day that he had adopted her as his own. No one had understood how the Lord of the Western Lands, hater of all humans, could have the audacity to do such a thing. He hadn't even bothered to explain it to anyone. He had his reasons and that was all that mattered. Not to mention the fact that he didn't even understand it himself.
Finally, after these three years, an opportunity arose for Kagome. Kaede had heard a myth of a child who would be born into the future. As the myth went, the child would be brought into the past by unknown circumstances. The child would grow into a strong miko and would have abilities that could be surpassed by no one. Kaede had found the myth very interesting. Especially considering that Kagome was indeed from the future and had been brought into the past. Yet, was the child a miko?...she wasn't sure. When she asked Kagome some questions, she learned that Kagome had lived on one of the most significant shrines. This meant that Kagome most likely was a miko. With this knowledge, Kaede began to train Kagome. She taught her about auras and how to focus her strength. Then the day came when she finally accomplished something...after only 2 weeks of training, Kagome had accomplished the unthinkable! Inuyasha had been calling her names, as usual...All of a sudden, she had turned around and a blue glow began to radiate from her body. Inuyasha had just stared in awe as she glared daggers into him. Then before he knew it, she raised her hand and a rock that had been sitting behind him flew up and hit him in the head. Kaede came rushing out to find Inuyasha laying on the ground maoning and yelling at Kagome. Kagome was kneeling beside him apolagizing over and over again. "Kagome! You did it child!" Kaede had yelled with joy. "Did what?" Kagome asked, still confused. "You finally used your powers." Kaede answered and said, "This means that you are in deed a miko and there is a way to return you home!" "Really?!" Kagome said with excitement. "Did you hear that Inuyasha?! Home!!" Inuyasha looked up at her and then looked back to the ground. He didn't want to lose her...ever...He didn't say anything though. This was her dream. She had been telling him about her family and her time for years. He couldn't take it away from her.
Two days later, Inuyasha led Kagome to the well. Kaede had taught her how to focus her strength to make it through the well. Together, Kagome and Inuyasha stood beside it. She looked at him, and she was suddenly so frightened. "What if I never get to come back?" she asked him. He didn't know what to say. He grabbed her hand and looked at her...."Can I go with you?" he asked. "Won't you miss it here?" she said. He looked at her and said the only thing that was running through his mind., "You're my best friend... You're the only thing I would miss." So, together they jumped through the well.
When they reached the other side, Kagome was actually a little nervous...No, not a little..She was horrified. She hadn't seen her family in three years now. What if things had changed? She took Inuyasha by the hand and they walked towards her front door. When she opened the door, she didn't see anyone. She looked at Inuyasha and he just nodded for her to look for them. She looked all through the house...searched every room, but still didn't find her parents or her grandfather. Finally, she walked into her room. She was surprised to find everything the way she had left it. Well, that day she had left her pajamas laying on the floor, and they weren't there now, but she figured her mother had probably put them away. "Should we stay?" she asked Inuyasha. "Yeah. I'm sure they'll be home in a little while......What's this?" he asked, pointing to her lamp. "Oh...remember how I told you that here in my time we can have light inside, even when it's dark without using candles or fire?"she said looking at him. "yeah.." was all that he said. "Well,"she continued "this is one of the things we use. You plug in and it uses electricity." He was looking at her with confusion written all over his face. "I don't know how to explain it. We'll ask my father when he gets home. He always has an answer for everything." She said answereing his unvoiced question.
Darkness was falling and her family still hadn't arrived. The two children were both very sleepy so they decided to take a nap. They laid down on her bed and fell fast asleep. Inuyasha had his arm around her as if to protect her in case any danger presented itself. This is how Mrs. Higurashi found the two when she walked into Kagome's room. Even after all these years it was still a habit for her to go into Kagome's room each night. It had been tradition for her and her husband to go in and tuck her in every night. When she opened the door, she was surprised to see that someone was laying on the bed. Frightened, she turned on the light. When the light filled the room, she saw the the person on the bed was....her daughter! "Kagome?!!" she cried. Kagome's eyes drifted open as she fought away the sleep that had claimed her. Inuyasha had shot up immediately, prepared to protect Kagome. When Kagome saw her mother, she was so happy. She began to cry as her mother took her into her embrace. It had been so long. 'I knew she'd come back' Mrs. Higurashi thought to herself. When Mrs. Higurashi's father heard the commotion upstairs, he walked up to see what was going on. He was shocked when he saw his daughter holding Kagome and a strange looking boy sitting beside them. 'Who is that boy?' he wondered. Of course, he barely had a second to wonder as he ran over towards his grandaughter and wrapped his arms around both her and is daughter. "Finally, we're a family again." he said.
Inuyasha just watched them as he felt a pang of sadness envelope him. He felt as if he was loosing his Kagome. 'My Kagome,' he thought...'my best friend...she's the only one who cares about me. What will I do without her?' He was so afraid all of a sudden. Kagome turned towards him, noticing his odd behavior. "Inuyasha?" he looked up at her as she said, "don't worry Inuyasha. You're still my best friend. Forever, remember?" He smiled and hugged her. They all sat there in her room talking about everything that had happened. How Hojo had came running in crying because she was gone. How they had looked and looked, but no one knew anything. How they had never given up hope. Kagome explained everything that had happened. At first her mother and grandfather didn't believe her. The past? Demons? Powers? It didn't make sense. They decided to give it the benefit of the doubt though.
Kagome looked at her mother and grandfather. She still hadn't seen her father. "Where's daddy?" she asked. Her mother looked at her father as if pleading for help. He glanced at Kagome and shook his head yes. "What's going on?" Kagome asked. "Oh sweetie..." her mother began. "Your daddy...He went to the store last week to get some milk and bread...." she began crying and found it hard to say anything. Inuyasha wrapped his arm around Kagome as Mrs. Higurashi collected herself. "What happened mom?" Kagome asked. Her mother looked into her eyes and tried to hide her pain with no success, "Your daddy didn't get to come home. His car died in an intersection and he was hit full force by another car. He...he didn't make it." she finished as she burst into tears. Kagome looked at her mother in disbelief. "Daddy's dead?..." she asked quietly as she began to cry. Her mother nodded her head. Kagome leaned forward and hugged her as they cried together. Inuyasha just sat there. He didn't know what to do for them. He knew how much Kagome loved her father. He reached his hand out and rubbed Kagome's back to comfort her. After a while of crying, she began to feel very tired. "Are you sleepy honey?" her mother asked. "Yes." Kagome replied weakly. Her mother looked at Inuyasha. She didn't know what to do with him. He was already preparing to lay down with Kagome. 'Is that a wise decision?' she thought to herself. She stood there pondering whether or not to let him when he looked up at her and said, "Don't worry. I'll protect Kagome just like I always do." He gave her a reassuring smile and she smiled back at him. "Oh.." she said as she looked at her daughter clinging to him as if he was her only sense of safety. "Ok. Thank you" she said. He crawled under the blanket beside Kagome and they fell asleep for the final time that night.
