CHAPTER 1

Crimson Night

The screams of the villagers could be heard in the night air, the smell of blood flooded my senses making me want to gag. I could hear the snarls of the demons as they took pleasure in killing the humans one by one, I wanted to stop it but I couldn't I could only watch. Watch as the humans are destroyed completely; watch as chaos erupted in the entire world. Reaching the edge of the forest I looked down onto the village seeing the humans try to flee from the demons only to be slaughtered. Some of the men tried to defend themselves, but it was no use the demons were to strong and they were slaughtered. Looking away I spotted the form of a child, no older then ten hiding in the shadows, a woman stood before her fighting off the demon each blow she landed made the demon hiss in pain. Turning around I walked back into the forest only to freeze as I heard the scream of the woman. I could hear her anguish as she fell to the ground in defeat, the shrill scream of the child pierced into the night air. Wiping around I raced back to the village my scythe drawn and ready to kill, my heart pounded against my chest as I sped down the hill heading towards the demon that was leering at the child, saliva dripping from his mouth. Leaping into the air I slammed my scythe upon the demons head splitting him in two, blood splattered against me as I landed onto the ground with a thump. Slowly standing up I looked over my shoulder at the surprised demons, I inwardly smirked to myself. They were confused, outraged, and…aroused none the less. Turning to face the demons before me, I was disgusted at what I saw, yet I kept my emotionless mask on. They were horrid creatures, a mixture of a pig and scorpion. My stoic mask never left my face as I advanced towards them, my scythe posed to attack. I watched as they took a step back unsure of what to do, before they could take another step back I was upon them. The sound of their cries rang in my ears as I sliced them to pieces, blood squirting onto the ground, the sound of flesh hitting the ground vibrated throughout the night.

Easing myself up I looked at the mutilated bodies before me, their corpses surrounded me. Crouching down I cleaned my scythe on one of the demons tattered shirt, pleased with the results I slowly stood up and glanced over at the child. Inwardly sighing I walked over to her my scythe hanging on my shoulder as I put it up. Bending down I looked into the child's face my face never wavering, "What's your name young one?"

"My…my name is Megumi." The girl stuttered as she bowed her head down. Smiling I faint smile I ruffled Megumis' hair.

"How about we give these people a proper burial and I'll take you to the next village." Watching Megumi smile sadly I stood up and walked over to her mothers form. I don't know how many people I have buried, but every time I come upon a village something in me cried out in pain begging me to bury them and I always complied.

Grasping the woman's body I dragged her over to the middle of the village slowly laying her down and going to the next person. I don't know how long I did this and I don't know how long I spent burying the villagers, all I know was that I didn't stop until every villager was properly buried.

"Miss thank you for saving my life." Looking down I stared down into Megumis' sea green eyes.

"It's not a problem young one, not a problem." Watching her shake her head I turned away and headed towards the edge of the village, Megumi right behind me. We walked for four hours, never stopping, never resting. We continued to walk until we reached a river. Settling down onto the grass I gazed out upon the field beyond the river, never breaking contact.

"Excuse me miss? I'm hungry; do you have anything to eat?" Snapping out of my thoughts I stared at Megumi.

"I'll go get us something to eat, hold on." Standing up I waded through the river my hands posed above the surface, my eyes watching the movement of the fish as they swam around me. In the blink of an eye I had a very large fish in my hands, cocking my head to the side I heard Megumi squeal with laughter.

"Yeah. You got one, you got a fish." I squealed in excitement as the pretty lady caught me something to eat. Watching her bring the fish onto shore I noticed how cold her eyes were. They held no warmth or love in them like my mothers did, her eyes held absolutely nothing they were cold and unemotional. Her body was muscular and very defined, sort of like the Demon Slayer women I used to see before they were killed. Watching her as she started the fire and gracefully sliced the fish into clean cuts I noticed the scars on her arms, scars that showed of her painful past. Sighing, I carefully stood up and walked over to her. "You carry a very heavy burden."

Snapping my head up I eyed Megumi carefully, there was wisdom in her eyes that I had not seen in a child for along time. "Yes Megumi I do, but it is something I don't wish to speak off. It happened a long time ago and I would like to forget about it."

"But you can't forget it no matter what you do. It will always haunt you." Staring at Megumi I sighed, she was right…it took a mere child to make me understand.

"Your right I can't forget but I would like to forget it." Placing the fish onto the fire I watched the ember's flicker back and forth remembering that horrid day. The day I was betrayed the day when I lost everything, the day when I, Kagome Higruashai died and Airy the Demon Slayer was born.

"I saw you on top of the hill…watching as the demons killed my villagers, I watched as you turned away and left and I watched as you came back and destroyed the demon. You could have killed the demons before they killed everyone yet you didn't. Why didn't you?"

"It's not my fight and it wasn't my place to interfere."

"Yet you came and saved me before I was killed." Closing my eyes I heard her silent tears, I could hear her sniffles as she sat there.

"I was going to leave you and let the demon kill you, but you reminded me of somebody. I could not bear the thought of you dieing." Standing up I walked into the forest not looking back as I heard her call out to me to stop. She could find the village on her own now, it wasn't that far, I had led her far enough for her to find the village.

The cool night air flowed through me caressing me gently as a mother would to a child. I could hear the crickets as they played their silent song, the howls of the wolves as the moon shown through the clouds. Distant screams filled the night air once again as demons ravished another village. This was only the beginning of hell, it would get worse as time continued and when the day approached for it to end I would be there to watch it unfold. The scream of a child snapped me out of my thoughts, spinning around I dashed back towards the camp where I left Megumi. My heart pounded fiercely against my chest as I quickened my pace, the howling of the wolves made my blood freeze. Barging into the campsite I froze completely, for there before me laid the body of Megumi her brown hair matted with her blood, her sea green eyes filled with horror and fear. Collapsing onto the ground I could only stare at what was before me, no tears came, they never come, they stopped coming the moment I sealed my emotions. Gently cradling Megumi's body I cared her over to the river cleaning her body of the blood and dirt. I should never have saved her; I should have left her to die at the village with her family, I shouldn't have let my emotions get the best of me. Pulling her out of the water I laid her down onto the ground staring at her young face, she would be with her family soon. Closing my eyes I summoned the Soul Piper.

"YOU HAVE SUMMONED ME GUARDIAN?" Opening my eyes I stared at the Soul Piper his red eyes gazing at me looking into my hardened soul.

"Yes, I have. Take her away from here and make sure she is happy Piper. I don't want her to end up in hell."

"IT SHALL BE DONE." Watching him descend to the ground he took the form of that of a young man, his vibrant red hair shining in the fires light, his red eyes turning blue, holding that of love and kindness. Looking at him one last time I turned and walked away knowing that Megumi was in safe hands and that she would go to a better place then this. Tonight the moon cried a river of blood which flowed throughout the entire land staining it for all eternity. The beginning of hell has begun and it shall not stop until everything pure…is dead.
