Chapter Nine
“Chicks Dig Talks”
Disclamer: I do not own the InuYasha series. That belongs to Rumiko Takahashi. Please enjoy this long awaited chapter!
“I don't understand you,” Yasha muttered, glaring at her as he sat down on the couch. With a shrug, Kagome sat beside him, crossing her legs as she leaned forward to look at his face. “I don't expect you to, you know,” she sighed in reply. “But I think I deserve some honesty on this front.
“Honesty?” Yasha laughed, sarcasm in his voice, “honesty. Alright then.”
He leaned back against the couch, his bangs dropping down in front of his face. He gave a grunt of frustration as he pushed his hair from his face, growling as it flopped back down again. “Goddamnit!” Yasha shouted in frustration.
Kagome frowned. He was obviously bothered by the idea of telling her anything. Reaching for a bobby pin that lay on the coffee table, she picked it up and moved to push his bangs to the side.
As she ran her hands through his bangs, Yasha's eyes met her own. She froze for a moment, completely bound by his gaze. His expression was sardonic; an unusually grim one compared the annoying smirk that usually graced his features. His eyes never left hers as she hastily moved his bangs aside and sat back down, crossing her legs and staring at her hands, which felt warm and shook. What the hell was going on?
“Kagome.”
She looked up from her hands, looking at the closet past Yasha's head, glancing around at anything that wasn't him. “Yeah?”
“Kagome,” he whispered, “look at me. If you want the truth.”
She focused her eyes on the hanyou, blushing at his direct gaze.”Ok,” she mumbled.
“Alright then,” Yasha sighed, “well, first off, my name is InuYasha.”
Kagome tilted her head. “Really?”
“Yes really,” InuYasha snapped, “and if you don't like it, too bad.”
“No no,” Kagome shook her head, “I don't have a problem with it. It's just… kinda literal isn't it?”
“Hah,” InuYasha barked, “only half true. Are you going to keep talking or are you going to let me finish?”
“I'll let you finish,” Kagome replied meekly.
“Alright then,” the hanyou growled. “So, InuYasha's my name. Yes, dog spirit of the forest. We all know my dad had a shitty sense of humor since I'm obviously a half-demon. But I'm guessing you've figured out that much, right?”
Kagome nodded.
“Well,” InuYasha muttered, “there's not much left to say. My dad died right after I was born and my mother died when I was a kid. My dad had a big had in a lot of major corporations across the country, so Sesshoumaru and I were left with a load.”
“Sesshoumaru?” Kagome whispered, her eyes wide, “you mean Dai Sesshoumaru? The second face of I. Corps?”
“Well, yeah,” InuYasha squirmed, “that name isn't very normal either, is it?” InuYasha caught Kagome's sudden look of suspicion. “Look, as much of a bastard as he is, Sesshoumaru isn't stupid enough to get involved in those crazy youkai terrorist attacks. Believe me when I say that I. Corps isn't so blatant about their methods as those guys.”
“So they do kill people?” Kagome squeaked, already backing away off the couch.
Frowning, -this might not have been such a good idea-; InuYasha pulled Kagome back to his side, gripping her shoulders. It was not a comforting gesture. It was a don't-move-and-let-me-finish-gesture.
“Listen, Kagome,” InuYasha said firmly, “we're not mixed up in anything like that. Believe me when I say I'm just a delivery boy,” of death, he though wryly, “and that I. Corps isn't that down and dirty.” In public.
Kagome nodded. “I guess… there's a lot of prejudice against youkai these days. I mean, people have always been afraid, but it wasn't like this until thirty years ago, right? I mean, demon independence wasn't something they really seemed to care about.”
“I'm not really into politics,” InuYasha replied nonchalantly, “but I guess after all those world wars, demons realized that humans have gotten strong enough to fight back. Claws and fangs don't do so well against a bazooka or a rain of gunfire.”
Kagome moved against her companion. “I guess not,” she whispered. Looking up at InuYasha, she realized that he was changing the subject. “What kind of delivery boy then?”
“What?” he barked, aggravated that she remembered.
“What kind of delivery boy are you?” Kagome demanded to know, “I mean, you know people like Koga. He seems like a bloody assassin to me.”
“Oh,” InuYasha fished for something, “well, I mainly deliver documents and the like. I sometimes escort company people. Like a taxi driver. We actually found out that Koga…” AH! Brilliant.
“We actually found out that Koga,” InuYasha repeated gravely, “was a member of a terrorist group intent on spoiling I. Corps reputation. I was sent to bring him back under the ruse of a job for him, but I found him advancing on you after one of his senseless murders, and I had to take action.”
“Is he still looking for me?” Kagome whispered,” is that why you've kept me here?”
“Koga's in league with some major groups,” InuYasha answered solemnly, “they might want revenge on you for what I did to him. They might even want to kill me.”
“But you were just protecting me!” Kagome cried in outrage, gripping InuYasha's shirt, “you were just protecting me!”
“Yeah?” He snarled back, unprovoked anger suddenly filling him. Fuck, he was tired of this. All this Goddamn bullshit! “You would rather I left you there? We're in this shit together now. I could have gone on with my life, could have gone on living in this crap apartment watching the telly, wasting my family's money. But you had to come along and ruin it!” Seeing her dumbstruck face, another wave of anger coursed through him. He slammed his fist on the top of the couch behind her head. “Fuck it, Kagome!” He shouted, screwing his eyes tight. Why was he so stupid? Why did he even care?
^.^
Kagome watched InuYasha, her head numb and her mouth gaping at his unprecedented shouts of frustration. Had her coming into his life really messed things up so bad? So far, he had acted so distant, so uncaring. Now he seemed to be showing his true feelings on the situation. And she didn't like what she saw one bit
She too almost wished she had defended herself that night and, just a bit that Koga had taken care of her. What would happen to InuYasha now? Not only was he probably feared by humans for being involved with I. Corps, but now youkai themselves were after him. Was that what life for a hanyou was really like?
Suddenly, Kagome could understand, just a bit, of his pain. A life where he was hated by everyone. Being half-human meant nothing to humans, they only saw the demon in him, same for the youkai. But she couldn't say that to him; he would only lash out against her. But there were some things that didn't need to be said out loud. Reaching her hand out to touch his shoulder, she felt him shaking from all his pent-up emotions, and they seemed to channel through her hand, up her arm and into her heart. InuYasha didn't look at her, his head was bent, his breath heaving. With her other hand she reached around to the back of his neck, pulling him forward against her chest.
She felt him still for a moment, his body tense and undoubtedly uncomfortable in the awkward position they were in. She felt him shudder, almost in revulsion, and she almost slid away from him. But then he sighed, and leaned into her, the pressure of his head on her collarbone making her grit her teeth against the dull pain it caused her.
^.^
It almost felt like it lasted a long time, but it must have only lasted three minutes, not even. InuYasha felt almost embarrassed, his head mere inches from her breasts. He tried to hold his breath in, as though remaining tense would ease the strangeness of the moment. The thump of her heart was loud in his ears, and it astounded him to realize that his own heart was also beating quickly.
He heard her sniff, and as she held him, he smelled the scent of salt water. Without looking up he moved his arms from where they were on the sofa and placed them on the girl's shoulders. He left them there for a moment, and then gently moved her away from him as he lifted his head. Averting his eyes, he moved his hand to ruffle her hair.
“It'll be ok,” InuYasha muttered, standing from the couch, “I won't just toss you out. Listen,” he said suddenly, wracking his brain for a way to make it up to her, “how about we go somewhere tomorrow?”
He heard Kagome move to face him. “Like where?”
Grrrr. “Umm. We could go down to the city. Like where you were the other night,” he shot her a glare, “we could just walk around and buy stuff.”
He heard her chuckle. “Like in What Not to Wear?” She laughed.
“Yeah,” he grinned. “Speaking of which…”
