~~Chapter 3: The Game of Love~~

“Put that away, baka, before you hurt someone.”

InuYasha didn't spare a glance at his brother as he held Tetsusaiga over his head. “Kaze no Kizu!”

Five yellow blades extended from the sword, destroyed half of Sesshoumaru's neat lawn. Sesshoumaru scowled before tossing InuYasha bored stare. The hanyou stood with a triumphant look on his face, Tetsusaiga resting on his shoulder. “Apologize.”

InuYasha snorted. “Like I'll ever apologize to you.”

That said, he dropped Tetsusaiga in to its sheath and strolled over to his half-brother, who was sitting on a chair drinking wine. “Tell Kagura thanks for lunch. I gotta get back to the office.” He frowned. `It's Saturday, I'm supposed to be in fucking bed.'

“Be sure to finish the blueprint by Monday. The meeting with Takenawa is on Wednesday.”

“Feh! I know, I know.” InuYasha tossed over his shoulder as he walked away. It struck him again, how clean Sesshoumaru's mansion really was. He could see his reflection on the polished floor. Then again, Kagura and Sesshoumaru had no pups yet. It was just them two. Only Kouga and Ayame had four children now. The youngest one was Kagome's age and they did that on purpose so Aki would be the same age as Kagome was and therefore attend the same school as Kagome. Sesshoumaru was in no hurry to have pups, InuYasha didn't even have his mate, and Shippou wanted to enjoy his time with Shiori.

Kagura wasn't in the house when he left. InuYasha shrugged as he took his cell phone from his pocket and scrolled through the names. Opening the car door, he didn't bother glancing at the car seat as he placed Tetsusaiga on the back seat and sat down. “Son of a…ow!”

He growled as he reached behind him, finding the offending contraption that he had sat on. Not locating anything, he stood up and looked at the leather car seat. `A thumbtack? How the fuck did a thumbtack get on the seat?' he grabbed the black thumbtack and chucked it over his shoulder. He sat down again and closed the door, his rear stinging from the needle on the tack pinching him. Apparently, not even his black slacks could create a barrier from the tiny tack.

Making his way out of Sesshoumaru's estate, he drove down to Taishou Inc. He was having a bad day to say the least. He had forgotten to set his alarm the night before and woken up late. The only thing he didn't have to worry about was finishing the blueprint for a mansion one of their wealthy clients wanted to have built for his wife. Kouga had screwed with the computers so once again, he had to fix the problem. He growled lowly in his throat. `And I'm still in square one with Kagome. It's not fucking fair! Everything is conspiring against me.' Saturdays were his days to be lazy and stay home. It was a little past noon and he was heading to work. He liked his job, but he liked being home better. He hadn't seen Kagome since Monday, two weeks ago, when he gave the lecture. He hadn't been able to walk up to her because she always had her friends with her. InuYasha sighed.

`At least you tore up Sesshoumaru's yard. Kagura will beat his ass.'

He chuckled. `So maybe this day isn't a complete ruin.'

In the last five-hundred years, the sound of Kagome's voice had somewhat diminished. He remembered well what she looked like and the sound of her voice, but the passage of time had been so much longer for him than her. He had been wiped out of her mind and heart. She didn't love him anymore, she didn't remember him anymore. When she looked at him, she looked at him like a stranger. He hadn't missed the scent of her fear when he had offered to drive her somewhere.

`Feh! Damn, I wish this wasn't so fucking complicated. The first time she fell in love with me because I had sheer dumb luck. For rescuing her ass from every youkai that came after her and being her friend.'

He parked his car in the underground parking lot of Taishou Inc. He sighed, looking around. `This time, I don't have any youkai to protect her from. I don't have youkai chasing after the Shikon Jewel. I don't have any youkai to rescue her from. All I have to offer her…' He trailed off with a shake of his head.

`I think making Kagome fall in love with us again is getting more complicated by the day.'

`Feh!'

“What's with the Band-Aid?”

Kagome crossed her eyes, blushing at the Band-Aid located across her nose. “I-I had a little accident this morning. Nothing serious though…” `Nothing serious? Are you kidding, you have a Band-Aid on your nose. A big one…a taupe one.'

Hojo chuckled. “What did you do?”

Kagome looked at her fries before looking back up at her boyfriend. “I fell.”

Hojo chuckled again before taking a sip of his soda. Kagome glared at the fries. She hadn't meant to fall. Really. She had woken up late for her date with Hojo. In her rush to get out of bed, the sheets had tangled around her legs and she had fallen face first on to the floor. That had hurt so much, she had just stayed there for what seemed like hours, trying to rid the pain from her nose. A small trickle of blood had run down and she had smacked a Band-Aid on it. It didn't look so well on her and she groaned softly.

“So Kagome, what would you like to do the rest of the day?”

Kagome smiled. “I thought we should go to the carnival.”

Hojo frowned, drawing his eyebrows together. His hazel eyes looked at her like he was a bit irritated. “The carnival is for children Kagome. Lets go somewhere else.”

Kagome blinked as anger filled her mind. `Hojo.' “You asked me where I thought we should go---”

Hojo waved a hand at her. “But Kagome, I didn't think you'd choose a childish place. The carnival? Trust me, you'll have fun somewhere else.”

She bit her bottom lip. `Don't take that from him! Get up and go!' “Like where?”

Hojo looked out the window of the small diner in mock concentration. “The movies. Or the museum…I hear they're having a new exhibition of the Milky Way and stuff like that.”

Kagome sighed. `Stupid…get up and go! Hojo is a jerk!' “I suppose the movies wouldn't be so---”

Hojo reached over and grabbed her hand. “Let's go to the museum first and then we'll go to the movies. I'll even let you choose what you want to watch.”

Kagome gritted her teeth. `Get. Up. Leave this baka!' “I don't think I---”

“Come on Kagome, we can catch the two o'clock tour.” Hojo dropped money on the table before grabbing her and pulling her behind him.

`Baka, baka, baka, baka! Kagome, don't be stupid! Take your hand back and go home.'

Kagome sighed. `I should…b-but Hojo wants to go and well, I mostly choose the places.'

`Kagome…you ought to be pushed off the bridge for saying that. Hojo always handles you the way he wants. Don't be dumb. He was so sweet before you were his girlfriend.'

Kagome grimaced. `Now he treats you like crap and you let him…you let him because you're a baka.'

True, she supposed. Hojo didn't really respect her much. He was caring and sweet, yes, but when she said something she shouldn't, Hojo lashed out at her. She always tried to steer clear of his lashing out and let him stay sweet and caring, the perfect guy. He was considerate of her, of course. Whenever she was sick, he always came by with gifts.

`That's only because he doesn't like it when his girl is sick, because he can't control anyone else.' Kagome frowned. Hojo did tend to control her a little more than she liked, but his sweet side was much greater. She knew he'd take care of her, but she also knew he would have her bend to his will.

`Never.'

`You're bending to his will now.'

It wasn't because she wanted to leave Hojo. She had spent almost three years with him. He was her security blanket against the rest of the people. Always taking her to fancy places and being with her, it made her feel as though she was safe in a way. He was dull, yes, but he was a good choice in a man.

`Be careful.' A little voice in the back of her head whispered.

“Kagome?”

Hojo's voice cut through her reverie. Kagome gasped and looked up at him. “Wh-What?”

“I asked if you would like some ice-cream.” Hojo said, wrapping an arm around her waist. Kagome shook her head.

“N-No thank you.”

“Fine.” He said irritably as he steered her in to the museum.

Kagome sighed. `This sucks.'

`Yes…Yes it does.'

“I don't want to go to the movies anymore.”

“Why not?”

“Because, Kagome, I'm tired. I want to go home.”

Kagome frowned. “But you said---”

“I know what I said. I'll take you to the movies on Friday, okay?” He said rubbing his forehead.

Kagome sighed, rubbing her arms. “Okay.”

He leaned down, brushed his lips against hers in a gentle kiss. “I knew you'd understand, Kagome. I love you. I'll swing by your house tomorrow, okay?”

She nodded. She watched as he walked away. The wind whipped her black hair around her. She looked at her feet. `What's wrong with me?'

She scowled. It seemed to her, in the last three weeks, Hojo was getting worse. It all started that day she had rolled down the stairs in the old shrine. She still couldn't remember falling. That day had started it all. InuYasha Morikami had also etched himself in to her brain.

`It's his eyes…I know it.' Kagome mused, not moving from her spot on the sidewalk. For Hojo, she had worn the long-sleeve red shirt she had bought with Ayumi. At least he had complimented her. She had chosen to wear a pair of boot-cut light wash jeans with sneakers. Hojo had said to just dress casually, so she did. The colors of the sky beckoned her to look up, capturing her the ribbons of different shades. She knew dusk was approaching. `Morikami-san said he'd be around. I haven't seen him for two weeks.'

`You think the InuYasha Morikami would come back to a silly high school girl? His last name is famous for Kami's sake. Morikami could have any woman he wanted. Why would he come back to you?'

She sighed and started walking down the street. The people around her seemed to fade from her vision as she passed them. Drowning out the sounds of everyone, Kagome was lost in her own little world. Time seemed to fade away from her as she walked with no real destination. Her emotions seemed hard to control. Her heart sped up, her mind spun away from her. `Where am I going?'

She rounded the corner. She didn't notice the silver-haired man in front of her. She didn't notice his surprised gasp. It did register when her already hurt nose collided against something solid. All the sounds came crashing back down on her. She looked up, seeing a pair of golden eyes looking at her.

“Kagome,” He whispered. She gasped and stepped back.

“M-Morikami-san…I-I'm sorry,” Her face flushed. “I-I wasn't paying attention to where I was going.”

He chuckled. “No need for apologizes. You didn't hurt me.”

`Ow, my nose.' Kagome grabbed her nose. InuYasha frowned. “What's wrong?”

“N-Nothing. I just…M-My nose was already hurt and well, it didn't exactly slam softly in to you.”

He sighed and pulled her hands away from her face. He grinned when he saw the Band-Aid. “Cute Kagome…” He shook his head, gently lifting the Band-Aid to see what was underneath. `Tiny scratch. Feh! Hardly something to put a Band-Aid over.' “How'd you manage that, clumsy?”

“I fell,” She whispered. He looked down at her, watching as the sun lent her a glow that captured him.

`Klutzy as ever, huh Kagome?' “Feh! Klutz. At least you didn't really hurt yourself.” He carefully placed the Band-Aid back in to place. “So, where are you going?” He asked, hoping to sound as nonchalance as possible.

She shrugged. “Just taking a walk.”

“Oh?”

She nodded. “Yep.”

He leaned down towards her, smiling. “Do you mind if I join you?”

`Would you?' “N-No…”

He straightened again. She took in his attire. He looked different from the man who she had seen lecturing everyone. He wore faded jeans and a black tee-shirt. The thing that caught her eye was the necklace he wore around his neck. “W-What's that?” She reached up, rubbing a dark purple bead.

“A necklace.”

She blinked, narrowing her eyes. `Kagome, are you remembering?'

“It suits you.” She said finally. Not the remark he expected. He sighed and grabbed her hand.

“Come on.”

She blushed, but let him drag her away. `Feh! That's how you wanna play Kagome, fine!'

`She isn't playing, baka! Now's your chance…take her somewhere she wants to go. You gotta play your cards right with her this time.'

`Feh! I know that, damnit.'

He released her hand once she fell in to step besides him. “Where would you like to go, Kagome?”

`Are you like Hojo, InuYasha?' Kagome mused. She bit her lip. “I did want to go to the carnival.”

He grinned. “Then let's go.”

She gasped when he led her towards where the carnival was. `I didn't expect him to say `okay'. Maybe InuYasha isn't so bad.'

::*::*::*::* ::*::*::*::* ::*::*::*::* ::*::*::*::* ::*::*::*::* ::*::*::*::*

“Try this! It's delicious!”

“I don't think so.” InuYasha scowled when Kagome shoved the pink cotton-candy stick under his nose.

“But it's good. Don't be a stiff. Try it.”

“Feh! No.” He pushed the cotton-candy away. He rolled his eyes, watching as Kagome happily munched on it. In the two hours they had been wandering around the carnival, Kagome had taken him on a mini-roller coaster, a Ferris wheel, and a carousel. It had been easy enough for his hanyou senses. The loads of sugar she had eaten though, he expected Kagome to be bouncing around everywhere. She held her composure though. After the rides, they had walked around, playing games and then stopping to eat dinner.

“I'm having fun. Thank you, InuYasha,” Kagome linked her arm with his. He gave her a shy smile.

“Really?”

She giggled. “Yep!”

`Win her something. A teddy bear or that giant dog over there.' He stopped by a game booth, looking at the huge white dog on the top shelf. He grinned. `Piece of cake.' He decided as he pulled Kagome towards the booth.

The game was easy enough for him. Throwing little hoops around bottles stacked up high. The more rings tossed, the larger the prize. He glanced at Kagome, who was biting her lip.

“Which one you want?” He asked casually. Kagome looked up at him with a blush.

`The doggy Kagome, it's so cute!' She smiled. “The dog. The big one.” She pointed at the white dog. He nodded and the man behind the booth grinned.

“Good luck.” He dropped ten colorful hoops in front of InuYasha. “All ten gotta go in for the dog.”

InuYasha shrugged. “Easy as hell.”

`He's good.' Kagome mused. He was tossing the hoops easily, getting every single one of them in. Once the last hoop was around the bottle, the man grabbed the dog and gave it to Kagome.

She looked at the dog. `It had golden eyes…like InuYasha.' She giggled. `InuYasha in puppy form.'

“Thank you. It's adorable.” She hugged the white dog tightly against her body.

“No problem.” InuYasha glanced around the carnival, eyes settling on the highest `ride' in the park. “Come on.” He wrapped his arm around her waist, propelling her forward. Kagome gasped softly. He didn't take his arm away from her waist until they reached the `ride'.

“Y-You don't really want to go on that, do you?” Kagome asked as she looked at it. A monstrous blow-up mattress was at the bottom of the ride. People from above jumped off the cage elevator that took them up. “A bungee-jumping ride?”

InuYasha chuckled. “Not really bungee-jumping. You just jump off and land on this thing.” He pointed at the blow-up mattress. “Where's your wildness, Kagome?”

“I have wildness.” She grumbled. He started to go for the small line, but she gasped. “You really want to go on that?”

A wicked glint highlighted his golden eyes. “Yeah. Its for one or two people. Come on, Kagome.”

“Where am I gonna leave my doggie?” She countered. He chuckled, pointing to the man grabbing anything that could fall off from the people on the `ride'. “You leave it with that guy. He'll put the stuff somewhere until you get down. Come on Kagome.”

Her reluctance was tangible to him. He grinned. With a small groan, she nodded. “I can't believe I'm doing this.”

“You'll have fun, I promise.”

Unfortunately for Kagome, they didn't have to wait long. They stepped in to the bright blue elevator and up they went. Her heart beat sped up. “InuYasha, are you sure?”

“You don't want to?”

She looked away. “I do, but I'm scared.”

The elevator came to a halt as Kagome looked down. “Oh Kami!” Everything down on the ground looked small.

“Face each other and step in to this.” He handed them a double safety suit. “Don't let go of each other, okay? If you do, you might land and hit each other. Don't want that do you?” He man looked at them, black eyes widening. “You gotta tie your hair back also.”

He dug in to his jeans and took out two black scrunchies. Kagome grabbed one and picked up her hair and InuYasha tied it back also, but as a low pony tail. The man strapped them in.

She grabbed her arms around his waist. “Don't you dare let go of me.”

InuYasha snorted. “As if I'll ever to that, Kagome.”

The man smiled. “Step there and hang on. That piece of this thing will drop out. May surprise you.”

“Feh!”

Kagome groaned, burying her face in to his tee-shirt. `Oh Kami! Oh Kami!' She had never felt her heart beating so fast as at that moment. InuYasha wrapped his arms tightly around her, nestling her head against him. Her hands were sweaty as she waited for the floor to drop out.

InuYasha looked down. They were high. People on the bottom were watching to see when they fell. He flattened his ears. He knew Kagome would scream loudly so he might as well be prepared. `At least we're holding on to her.'

After what seemed like hours---in Kagome's opinion---the floor did drop out. She felt her heart leap out of her chest as she let out a blood curling scream. The sensation of falling was overwhelming. Her stomach felt like it was flipping inside of her. She squeezed her eyes closed, felt his arms tightened. The shock of landing registered in her mind. The feeling of landing against the blow-up mattress was relieving as they bounced back up a little. She landed safely on his chest. She looked at him.

“Oh Kami…InuYasha.” He laughed as he sat up, unlocking Kagome from him. She landed on her rear, bounced on the yellow air-bag. “That was…amazing. Even if I did scream.” Her eyes shined brightly as did her smile.

He swept her in to his arms. She wrapped her arms around his neck and he jumped over the edge of the blow-up mattress. Once he landed on the ground, two men came towards them and took the suits off. She released her black hair and he took the scrunchie off his silver hair. She watched as the wind blew it back in to place, around his face, around his upper body. They gave them back his cell phone and her dog.

“I-I think maybe we should walk around for a while.” She felt wobbly on her legs. He chuckled. “I think I'm still in shock of falling.”

He chuckled, sweeping her in to his arms again. The dog rested against her as she leaned her head against his chest, against his heart.

“Maybe we should get you some water.”

She nodded.

::*::*::*::* ::*::*::*::* ::*::*::*::* ::*::*::*::* ::*::*::*::* ::*::*::*::*

`InuYasha, I think we may have stepped in to `square one-and-a half' with Kagome.'

He grinned, tightening his grip around her small waist. He led up the shrine stairs and towards her house. “I had a great time today. Thank you. I needed it.”

“My pleasure. I had a good time to.”

The intense look in his eyes made her shudder and only for a moment, she thought he would kiss her. `I wouldn't mind. Kiss me InuYasha, I wouldn't turn away.'

He pulled her against his chest. “I-I'll see you again Kagome?”

She nodded. He leaned back, bent down to brush a light kiss over her cheek. “Good.”

“Th-That's what you said two weeks ago.”

He smiled. “It won't be two weeks, Kagome. I promise.”

“G-Goodnight, InuYasha.” Kagome braced herself on his shoulders, leaned on her toes to kiss his cheek. She gave him a timid smile before grabbing her dog and starting to turn away.

“W-Wait!” He grabbed her arm, pulling her back. “G-Give me your phone number.”

He extended his cell phone to her. She smiled, grabbed it, and put her number in to his phone. When she gave it back, his hand lingered on hers a little longer than needed, not that she minded at all.

“It's past eleven, InuYasha, I really have to get inside.” She whispered. He sighed and nodded. He watched as she opened the door to the house and disappear behind it. He walked away from the Higurashi Shrine, walking down the street towards his house.

`Ever gonna tell her you got in her way on purpose?'

`Nope.'

`Liar. You saw her when that little asshole left her there and you followed. You fooled her.'

`Feh! A little white lie never hurt anyone. Besides, it all turned out for the best. I have a chance to be with her again. I'm never letting her go.'

`Never?'

`Feh! That's right…never.'

`Good, because she's our mate.'

`Damn straight she is.'

A wide smile tugged at the edge of his lips as InuYasha leapt on the rooftop of a building, going home.
