~~Chapter 25: New Beginnings~~

Kagome leaned her head against the window of the plane. How long had she been flying already? `Too long…'

She grabbed her arms around his waist. “Don't you dare let go of me.”

InuYasha snorted. “As if I'll ever to that, Kagome.”

She blinked back tears. `Why did I run away?'

`Because you were afraid, because you can't face it.'

She sighed and bit the inside of her cheek.

“About?”

He shrugged. “Just stuff…memories. Things I did wrong.”

“What did you do wrong?” She pressed.

He sighed. “I-I…nothing important.”

“If it hurts you then it is important.”

“I-I just made a few mistakes and well…the consequences weren't something I expected.”

“What did you do?”

“I-I didn't tell someone I loved how I felt…and I lost her.”

Kagome stared at her lap. “Oh…I'm sorry.”

`He was talking about me right? The past?'

`Yeah, obviously. Kagome, go back. You love him, you adore him, you want to be with him. Don't run away from him. As much as he loves you, he won't wait forever you know.'

`But he cheated on me'

`Why don't you let him explain?'

`Because I don't want to hear the truth, it'll hurt. Maybe we just weren't meant to be.'

`If you weren't meant to be then why did it feel so right and perfect when he held you, touched you?'

`Because we liked it?'

`Because you loved each other. Kagome, don't runaway! Go back, go back now because he'll wait for you now. Not later…later no because he might not be there anymore.'

`I can't. I need to do this, I need to fly on my own. Not with a boyfriend, family, a fiancé---`

`You wanted him to come with you!'

`And what I saw just proved that I need to do this on my own. I have to…I have to get over him.'

`You love him.'

`Now I do.' Kagome nodded. `Now I do, but time heals everything. I'll get over him, I'll grow up, I'll learn and when I'm ready…I'll go back.'

“Maybe you pressured the Miko.”

“Fuck you, Sesshoumaru, I didn't pressure her.”

“You set your wedding to next year, she is a teenager.”

“So?”

“Perhaps she had the right idea.”

“How can you say that?” InuYasha snapped, glaring at his brother.

“Don't go after her, let the Miko fly on her own.”

“I'm hunting her down! I'll find her, Sesshoumaru if it's the last thing I do.”

“If you are meant to be then she will return. If you find her and make her return, you will loose her.”

“No I won't.”

Sesshoumaru stared at InuYasha seriously, almost solemnly. “Trust me, InuYasha. Remember Kagura and I? Let the Miko go.”

Mrs. Higurashi sighed and put down her cup of tea. “Fate and destiny are funny when working.”

“This isn't funny,” InuYasha glared at his tea cup.

“I meant, InuYasha, they have a certain way of doing things. Kagome fell through the well, that was no coincidence. She fell in love with you and you with her and then she came back. She was not ready with everything in your time. You waited for her and you tried a second time and she again fell in love with you.”

“And now?”

“And now, she does not know how to fend for herself.”

“I don't want her to be on her own! Its my job to protect her!”

“Protect her from what?” Mrs. Higurashi counted softly. “She is not danger in this time. Being on her own means living away from home, realizing her dreams, accomplishing her goals, growing up on her own. I know you love her and I'm positive you two are meant to be, InuYasha. And if you are, she will find her way back.”

`Will she really?' InuYasha sighed. “I can't wait forever. They're my feelings also.”

“We understand that, but it's the path she has chosen. Give her time and when she's ready, she will return.” Sesshoumaru said, standing up. “Now, I expect you to show up for work, you have much to do.”

InuYasha nodded once.

“This is pretty big,” Kagome said, looking around the house her mentor from Prada and Parson's had led her to after picking her up from the airport.

“Honey, you're not living here on your own.”

“I'm not?” Kagome asked, surprised. She thought she was the only one.

“No, no, no,” She short plump woman said. “There's four of you. Four out of millions of entries were chosen. You will all be living here. You are here for the design, the other three are in this program for other careers. It's not just design Kagome, it's a whole future.”

Realization dawned on Kagome. “And because you have excelled, Parson's give you the dorm house and Prada will reward you with a car so you can get around. You will be paid and your scholarship will pay for the school. Congratulations, you being work in Prada Monday morning. Be ready, Ellena McGuire does not tolerate tardiness. I will send someone to pick you up in your new car so you learn how to get around New York City.”

The lady started to leave. Kagome grabbed her shoulder. “Wait! When are the others coming?”

“There is one expected to arrive from Nebraska in the morning.”

“Oh…”

“Feel at home, everything you need is here. The only you have to stock up on is food. All four of you are expected to pay your electric and water bills, you aren't living for free. Manage everything Kagome, your car, you must pay also.”

Kagome made a face, but nodded. “Thank you, Sally. I appreciate it.”

“All information on your house is on the kitchen. Pick your room, doll, there's four.”

With that, Sally left the house. Kagome saw four key chains hanging by the front door. She grabbed one, seeing the single key for the house. She grabbed it and locked the front door, shivering slightly. She was all alone. She looked around, seeing the living room first, already beautifully decorated. There was no dinning room, but there was an island counter in the kitchen where they probably could sit and eat. The kitchen was very big, but it was empty. `No food…' Kagome made a face. Her belly rumbled.

There were two bedrooms on the first floor, sharing one decent-sized bathroom. She didn't like either of them. Going up the stairs, she saw two more rooms, also sharing one bathroom. The bathroom connected the two rooms. She chose the room on the right, painted in white with red and gold trimming. `Your torturing yourself…!'

`I'm so not…' She started to unpack her luggage, opening up the walk-in closet. `No hangers…great…' She sighed. `I'll have to go shopping in the morning. Not now though, I want to sleep now'.

Kagome took a quick shower before changing in to her pajamas. She slipped in to the full-sized bed, sighing. She left her window open. `What? You expect InuYasha to crawl in to bed with you at night? We aren't in Tokyo anymore…he's continents away.'

She looked at her digital clock. Midnight. She tossed and turned, unable to sleep.

“I didn't cheat on you, Kagome. I love you.”

She opened her eyes quickly, half expecting to see InuYasha kneeling besides her. She heard his voice clearly. `I'm going to go crazy!' She tried to close her eyes again, falling in to a light slumber.

“We could be married, Kagome, be happy. You'd still go to school, I would have gone to New York with you, you'd be with me forever.”

She sat up, tears pricking her eyes. `Hate the `what ifs' don't you?'

`I can't sleep.'

`Obviously not…I mean, what if InuYasha didn't cheat on me? What if he and I could be sleeping with each other right now? What if tomorrow we chose our place for the wedding?'

`Kagome, go back.'

Kagome gasped and shook her head. `No, I refuse to go back right now. I'm Kagome Higurashi and I will not return to Tokyo, Japan…'

“Kagome Higurashi, you say?”

Kagome nodded as Ellena McGuire studied her. “Yes.”

Ellena pushed up her elegant glasses. Hazel eyes regarded Kagome with much interest. “You are quite the young woman, Kagome. A model?”

She nodded.

“Then why not pursue that?”

“Because, my passion of design, not strutting down runways.”

“I see…” Ellena ran her fingers through her thick shoulder-length dyed red hair. The woman sat down behind her desk. “You will be getting paid, Kagome. And you will be working along side me. At any moment you do not meet my standards, I can let you go, so work hard. I will have my assistant teach you how to use these computers and how we do things around here. If you are to venture as a fashion designer, you must her strong and you must be fashionable. Honey, you are dressed casual.”

Kagome gulped.

No” Ellena said. “You cannot wear jeans while working. Slacks, proper skirts, tops with fashionable taste. To work in this industry, you must know your fashion. I like your sketches, they're very tasteful. Work on your job wardrobe. No jeans, unless they are jackets that you will take off upon arriving here. Don't come a mess, its not helpful for your working environment. Always on time, Kagome, I stress that. I do not tolerate tardiness.”

Kagome nodded. “Yes McGuire-san.”

“Please, call me Ellena. I will guide you through your steps, Kagome do not worry. You have an excellent start and with motivation and proper choices, you will make it on top. Have you ever thought of a fashion line?”

“Yes”

“Name is always catchy. Like Prada or Chanel or Liz Claiborne. What would you name yours?”

Sudden tears pooled in her eyes, but she held them back. “Izayoi.”

Ellena smiled suddenly, looking at Kagome in great interest. “I like that and I also like you Kagome. I can tell you and I are going to get along famously. Welcome to Prada.”

“Thank you.”

She pressed a button on her phone. “Samantha, come in here and take Kagome Higurashi on a tour of the building. Explain how we work around here and how I like things done.”

“I will be there in a minute.”

“Thank you.” Ellena let go of the button. “Samantha is a doll, you'll love her.”

“Your secretary?”

Ellena nodded. Kagome almost made a face. `Secretaries…Hope she isn't another Melissa.'

Samantha came in to the room, dressed in a black shirt and a light blue button-down short sleeved shirt. Her black hair was held up in a ponytail and her black eyes stared at Kagome. She quickly went over to her and grabbed her hand.

“Hi, my name is Samantha Marina.”

“Kagome Higurashi.”

“Pleasure to meet you, we've been looking forward to seeing you, Kagome. Come with me,” Samantha winked at her. Kagome stood up, seeing Samantha was as short as Rini was. “I get along well with tall people.”

Ellena chuckled. “Samantha, please…just take Kagome around. You can go home afterwards, but you are expected here tomorrow at nine on the dot. Not a minute late.”

Kagome nodded. “Thank you very much, Ellena. I will not dissapoint you.”

“I hope not.”

With that Kagome let Samantha take her around the company.

After seeing Prada, she had returned home with food. Lots of food to stock up the kitchen. Besides that, she had bought slacks, shirts, skirts, and plenty of clothes for work. She opened the door and set down the bags.

She heard a scream and she backed herself up against the door. “Who are you and what are you doing in my house?”

Kagome stared at the young woman holding an umbrella to her neck. `What the?' Kagome frowned, slapped the umbrella away. “I live here!”

Angry blue eyes suddenly were drained of that emotion, leaving surprise behind. “Oh! Oh God, I'm so sorry. I forgot I was going to be living with other people.”

“You're one the other three.”

She nodded. “Victoria Valentine.” She stuck out her hand. Kagome shook it grinning. Victoria was Kagome's height. She had curly very blonde hair, dark blue eyes and smoky eye shadow on.

“Kagome Higurashi.”

“Pleasure to meet you.” She said and then her gaze traveled to the food. “Food!”

Kagome smiled. “I was going to starve if I waited any longer to stock up the kitchen.”

“Oh, I like you already.” Victoria said. “Let me help you take all this in then.”

The girls chatted away, putting things away. “Can you cook Kagome?”

“Japanese stuff, yeah.”

Victoria beamed. “You like Italian food?”

Kagome nodded. “Great! I'm good at that, I'll cook today, as a thanks for buying all the food. Anyone else living here yet?”

“Not yet. You're the first to give me some company.”

“Great.” Victoria started to take out ingredients. “I hope the others are nice and aren't conceited, think they own the world girls. I'll kill `em.”

Kagome laughed. “Where are you from?”

“Myrna, Nebraska. Grown up there in m'parents little farm. Loved medicine though, that's what I'm for. I'm going to be a pediatrician. My brothers didn't want me to come, but I escaped after graduation. Took out my savings, grabbed my cards and left. I don't want to be no farm girl for the rest of my life.” She looked over at Kagome. “How about you?”

“I'm from Tokyo, Japan. I'm here for the designing, also kinda ran away from something. My mother and brother were happy for me when I got accepted. Money, cards…all me to.”

“Nice.” Victoria looked at Kagome. “You like chocolate?”

“I love Snickers.”

Victoria laughed. “Kagome, you and I are going to get along famously.”

`Not the first one to say that' “Hopefully.”

“That must have been the best baked ziti I have ever tasted” Kagome grinned, rubbing her belly.

Victoria blushed. “Really?”

“Absoleutly.”

“Cool” she mumbled.

“Oh great! Look, your housemates are here.” Sally yelled, happily coming in with another girl in tow. “Kagome, Victoria, good evening.”

“Hi”

“Hello.”

Sally grabbed the girl's arm and brought her towards them. The girl was short, maybe five foot-two inches, seven inches shorter than Kagome and Victoria. She had curly brown hair and the prettiest hazel eyes Kagome had ever seen. She grinned.

“Victoria, Kagome….say hello to your third housemate, Emma Romano.”

Kagome went to the girl first. “Hi, are you hungry?”

“A little.” Emma said, her voice in a whisper.

“We made baked ziti, do you like that?”

Emma looked at the plates and blushed. “It's my favorite.”

“Well, well, well…good luck you three. Your last housemate will arrive in eleven days. Make Emma feel welcome. Bye” Sally strolled out of the house, hanging her copy of the keys as she left.

“Kagome's face looks familiar, don't you think?” Emma asked as she flipped the page of her magazine. Victoria stopped painting her toenails and looked at Emma.

“Umm…I don't know. Does she look familiar to you?”

Emma nodded. “I know my magazines. I swear, I've seen Kagome somewhere before…her face was awfully familiar when we first met.”

Just then Kagome walked in to Victoria's room on the second floor. “I finished the cupcakes. I suppose the last girl will like them, don't you?”

Victoria nodded. “Of course. Hey Kagome, Emma thinks your face looked familiar.”

Kagome turned. “Really?” Emma nodded. “I've never met you before. I just came in to say goodnight, I have to wake up early tomorrow.”

Emma closed the publication and sat up Indian-style. “Ever had picture taken in a magazine?”

Kagome laughed. “You're crazy, Emma. Me, a model?”

Emma raised a brow. `I've seen you somewhere Kagome and I'll be damned if I don't find out were.'

Kagome bid goodnight to the girls before locking her bedroom door. She slipped in to her bed. `It's been almost two weeks…Kami, why doesn't the hurt go away?'

She sighed softly and hugged her pillow. She missed InuYasha so much, so badly her heart ached inside of her every day. Her heart hurt so much, longed for InuYasha's embrace and touch. `Am I dying?'

`Kagome…you can't be separated from your mate.'

`He wasn't my mate…not yet.'

`He might as well have been. He took you already, all he had to do was mark you.'

She sighed and rubbed her face against her pillow. `InuYasha…do you miss me as much as I miss you?'

“InuYasha?”

InuYasha turned around to see Rini step out of the house. She bit her lip and he sighed. “What?”

“Aren't you hungry? You haven't eaten for days.” She said, looking at the ground. InuYasha shook his head.

“I'll eat when I get home.”

Rini watched as InuYasha jumped up in to a tree in Kouga's backyard. He looked so sad, so depressed. His eyes were glazed over as if he was about to cry. His heart was breaking and Rini could relate. She sighed.

She looked up at the sky in time to see a star streak across the heavens. She hugged herself. `Make a wish, Rini…'

`I wish…' She looked at InuYasha and smiled sadly. `I wish InuYasha and Kagome found their way back to each other.'

“Kagome?”

“I-InuYasha?”

Kagome turned around to see InuYasha standing behind her. She whimpered before she ran towards him. He opened up his arms for her, caught her when she launched herself on to him. Her legs wrapped around his waist as she crashed her mouth over his. He groaned, holding her tightly.

“What are you doing in my dreams?” She muttered between kisses.

“Loving you.” He replied.

“I'm sorry, InuYasha.”

“Why did you leave me, Kagome?”

“I can't remember right now.”

He pulled back to look at her, golden eyes burning her. “I didn't cheat on you Kagome.”

Kagome opened her eyes, memories of what she saw coming back to her. She slowly lowered herself on to her feet. “InuYasha I need time. I need to get away.”

“Why? Don't you want to be with me?”

“I love you InuYasha, but I need to do this.”

“Where are you?”

“Far away.”

“Come back to me, Kagome.”

“I can't.” She turned around, hugging herself.

“Kagome!”

She gasped, turning around immediately.

InuYasha was gone.
