~~Chapter 24: You Promised Forever~~
“Kagome!”
Kagome turned around to look at Eri, Yuka, and Akina who were waving at her to come sit when them for lunch. She smiled and walked over to them, setting her lunch tray down. The warm June breeze put a cool spot on her heated flesh. Ever since Ayumi and Akina had the argument, Ayumi didn't even look at Akina. But Eri and Yuka had apologized and stuck by Akina and Kagome. And everything came down to today, the final day of school.
`I'm graduating tomorrow.'
Akina grinned as Kagome sunk down besides her. “Are you excited, Kagome?”
She nodded. She hadn't questioned InuYasha on his lie a few days ago. He hadn't come to her at night, not even to tell her goodnight or anything. He had come last night though, sleeping next to her on her bed. Kagome had missed that, missed his embrace.
“Absoleutly,” Kagome said, munching on the side of her sandwich. Zachary walked towards them.
“Ladies,” He said smoothly before sliding besides Akina, gabbing her face and gently planting a kiss on her lips. “My beautiful angel.”
She blushed. “Zachary…”
Kagome smiled and began to chat away. Eri talked about her last `catch' of the year. Yuka talked about her plans for the summer. Akina had decided to get away from Japan. She was leaving to another country to study. But Zachary was staying in Japan, bidding his crush goodbye. They both seemed fine with it. Kagome? She chatted about going to design school in Tokyo, no one knew her plans to go to America. The ticket the school had sent her was useable at anytime she wanted within the next three weeks.
“Ohhh, Kagome, your knight in shinning armor is here.” Eri giggled. Kagome turned around to see InuYasha walk towards her. She grinned when he stopped next to her and slid besides her.
He hugged her and kissed her softly. “I missed you, wench.”
She felt her heart flip in her chest, watched as he lifted his hand to wrap his finger around a few strand of her hair. His golden eyes lit up, staring at her in a way that made her knees wobble. `Thank Kami I'm sitting…' “I missed you to,” She whispered, almost breathless. He winked at her before pulling out from behind him a single white rose. She squeaked, but took the flower. “InuYasha…”
“Just tell me you like it.”
“I don't like it.” She started. His face immediately saddened. She smiled, kissing his nose. “I love it.”
He snorted softly. “Wench.”
“Doggy.”
He rolled his eyes. “I'm working late today.”
Kagome sighed softly. “Again?”
“I'm sorry, Kagome, its just my job. I have to finish. I have clients.”
`I need you to, InuYasha' “I understand you know.”
“I know. I'll make it up to you.” He said, biting his bottom lip and twitching his left ear. She couldn't help the grin that came over her.
“I know you will.” She whispered. He kissed her forehead.
“I have to go back.” He kissed her again, deeply. He couldn't help it. “Keep your window open.” He mumbled.
“Okay.”
He stood up. “Akina,” He wiggled his eyebrows at her. Akina chuckled. “Bye.” He glanced at Zachary, growled, and left. Akina rolled her eyes.
“He's my uncle and he does that.”
Zachary snorted. “Imagine your father.”
Kagome held the rose as she watched InuYasha's retreating form. `I had him all to myself for a while. Lately though, he's all about work. Work, work, work…'
“Its okay, Kagome. Sometimes depending on the time of the year, the company gets swamped with work. Why commission during the winter when you could do it in the summer?”
Kagome glanced at Akina and nodded. “I know. I'm fine.”
“I like his necklace,” Eri said. “It's really pretty.”

“M-M'roku”
InuYasha looked at Kagome and shook his head. He leaned over her sleeping form. “Miroku” he corrected softly. He caressed her cheek with his fingers. She leaned in to his touch. He stood up again, walked over to her drawer and pulled out his pajama pants. He pulled down his slacks, dropped them on her desk chair. He unbuttoned his shirt, draped over the chair. He pulled on the pants and scratched his chest, bumping his prayer beads.
`She'll make you re-eat dirt once she remembers what the kotodama rosary was.' He twitched his ears. He walked over to her bed and slipped in besides her. He scooped her next to him, wrapping his arms over her. He took in her scent, closed his eyes.
“InuYasha?”
“Is there someone else that slips in to your bed at night?”
Kagome craned her neck to look at him. Her sleepy smile was enough to make his heart flip. “Maybe. Did you see him?”
“Wench…” InuYasha started in a warning tone. Kagome laughed.
“I'm kidding, puppy.” She leaned up to kiss him. “You're my one and only.”
“One and only” he repeated.
“I love you, InuYasha. Only you.” She snuggled against him. “No one else.”
He held her tightly and pressed his cheek against the top of her head. He closed his eyes. `Only you, Kagome. It's always been just you, you just never realized it.'

“And now, our class validictorian will speak. Please give an applause for Higurashi, Kagome.” The principal of the school stepped aside as Kagome took the podium. She smiled and looked at the audience all sitting to watch the graduation.
“Today marks a very important day of our lives. The beginning of a new life. We've all worked very hard throughout these years to achieve graduation. And now that we finally can walk out these doors with our ticket to our future, we have to remember, we still have a long way to go. This is just the beginning of a new life.” She paused, caught sight of InuYasha sitting at the front row, smiling at her.
`He looks proud' “And as new doors open, we will always remember our days in high school.” She looked back at her class. “Some of us found heartbreaks, other puppy love, some found adventure, and some true love.” She glanced at her ring, watching it sparkle. “But we all found the right path to life, to achieve what we want, a good future. And today, everyone I proudly say that we are ready to take our diploma's and step out in to the real world, in to a world where we grow up.”
The graduates cheered as they took their caps and threw them up, officially `graduating.' Kagome laughed, grabbed hers and threw it also. The principal took the microphone. “Ladies and gentlemen, the graduated class!”
They walked off the stage and once outside the school, the hugs started. Eri, Yuka, Kagome, and Akina hugged tightly. “Oh! We have to keep contact!” Eri cried.
InuYasha followed Mrs. Higurashi, Souta, and Grandpa out of the school. He grinned. He had felt a surge of pride when he'd seen Kagome speak fluently and wonderfully in front of everyone. He wanted to stand up and yell out she was his fiancé, his mate. The principal tapped Mrs. Higurashi's shoulder.
“That was an excellent speech Kagome delivered.”
“Thank you.” Mrs. Higurashi said. “This is my son, Souta and my father.”
“Pleasure to meet you.” The principal said, shaking hands with both.
“Oh!” Mrs. Higurashi grabbed InuYasha. “This is InuYasha Mori---”
“Morikami,” The principal finished. “Of course I know who you are! Its an honor to have you at our graduation.”
Mrs. Higurashi smiled. “My future son-in-law.” She said happily. InuYasha blushed.
“Of course, Kagome is your fiancé, correct? Wow, Morikami-san you have chosen a very smart young woman to marry. The best for you both.” He bowed before leaving.
“You look happy.” Souta said. InuYasha nodded.
“I'm proud of her.”
“We all are.”
Kagome caught sight of him and with a speed he didn't know she possessed, she ran over to him. He opened his arms for her, in the middle of the school's front lawn, and caught Kagome as she flung herself on to him. He closed his eyes and lifted her higher, held her tighter. She laughed, kissed his cheek. His arms held her right below her rear. Their noses almost touched.
“Looking at you while I was talking took away my nervousness.”
“Keh! I thought you did it perfect.”
“My puppy,” She whispered, looking at him with her eyes of affection. He smiled slowly, a genuine brilliance that Kagome had to swallow hard.
“That's so cute,” Mrs. Higurashi grabbed the camera Souta was holding and snapped a picture of Kagome and InuYasha. “I bet she'll love this picture.” She took some more, but she had caught the moment she had wanted.
InuYasha slowly set Kagome down. “I have a surprise for you.”
“I have one for you to.”
His eyebrows disappeared under his bangs. “Really?”
“Uh-huh.”
“Well, tell me later. I have to go no, Sesshoumaru needs me. Go to my office at five.”
“Okay.”
“Alright, I love you. Congratulations.” He kissed her quickly before leaving. Zachary stopped besides her.
“Congratulations, Kagome.”
She turned to look at the water-youkai. “You to, Zachary”
Kouga and Ayame came by with Akina, Raidon, Kiyoshi, and Kin. Kouga hugged Kagome first. “Congratulations, Kagome. Where's mutt-face?”
“He had to leave,” Kagome said quickly, receving hugs from the rest of the family.
Kouga looked at Zachary and the water-youkai extended his hand. “Zachary Serrano, Kagome and Akina's friend.”
Kouga nodded. “Congratulations to you also.”
Zachary nodded and turned around in search of his own family. He glanced at Akina before leaving. Akina rolled her eyes and shook her head. Kouga said hello to Kagome's family. “Lets go eat lunch, my treat.”
“Kouga---” Kagome started.
Kouga shook his head, hugged Kagome. “Don't argue with me. It's nothing, come with us. How could I let you go somewhere else when you're like family to us?”
Mrs. Higurashi nodded and smiled. “Thank you, Taka-san.”
“No need for formalities. Call me Kouga. Kagome's been my friend for a long time.”
After lunch with Kouga and his family, Kagome, Mama, Grandpa, and Souta went home. She quickly changed and headed out to Taishou Inc. It was only two-thirty, but she wanted to surprise InuYasha. She wanted to tell him about New York and the internship. She took her time heading to the company. Going through Tokyo's business district, she caught sight of a picture of her ad and she wiggled her eyebrows.
Kagome smoothed her white skirt and her red v-neck tee-shirt. She smiled at the receptionist and walked towards the elevators. “Higurashi-san” the security guard smiled politely at her and let her though without question.
`Good. Wouldn't want another scene, huh?'
`Not at all…' Kagome bit the bottom of her lip and walked in to the busy floor. Kagura smiled sweetly at her. “Kagome! What a surprise!”
“Hi, Kagura.” She greeted.
“I can't talk, sorry.” She started to walk away. “Congratulations on your graduation!”
“Thanks” Kagome laughed, walking towards InuYasha's office. She walked towards the office, looking straight ahead only too stop dead in her tracks.
“I hate to say I told you so,”
Melissa's soft voice was carried over to her. Kagome felt her heart constrict in her chest, felt it fall to a million pieces. `Kami no…please…' Memories crashed over her, the meetings with Kikyou, the pain she felt then she felt now. `Its not the same…this time it hurts so much more'
She whimpered, jerked off her ring. Turning to Melissa, she threw the ring at the woman before turning around and running. She couldn't take it, she had to get away. She ran past Kagura.
“Kagome!”
She harshly kept pressing the elevator button for the doors to close. Once the elevator reached the lobby, she ran away, ran to somewhere where it didn't hurt so much. She had to run away, to make the pain go away.
`Run away from InuYasha and Takara.'
`Shhh, Kagome…'
`Melissa was right! She was right and I didn't listen!'
`No, shh…Kagome…'
`She was right!' Her mind screamed `She tried to warn me! It was her…the first time in the magazine, the flowers, the lies, the running away. It was all her wasn't it?'
She stopped when she reached the park, holding her stomach she sank to her knees. Before she could think, she let out a scream. “Why?!”
Tears freely flowed down her face, over her neck, down to between her breasts. Her shoulders shook with the force of her cries. `InuYasha I trusted you completely…I-I…I loved you…'
`How could you?'

“I ditched Kagome on her graduation for this, Melissa,” InuYasha snapped as he came towards his office. He dropped papers in front of his secretary. “Fax those to Sueki-san, will you. Damn, I need a break. Don't let anyone in unless its Kagome.”
“Will do, sir,” Melissa said, grabbing the papers and looking for Sueki-san's fax number. She watched as InuYasha slammed the office door closed. She rolled her eyes. The elevator bell rung and out stepped Takara, the model.
She strolled over to Melissa and took off her sunglasses. “Tell InuYasha that I'm here. I swear, this better work Melissa. I will destroy you if it doesn't.”
“Oh trust me, it will…” Melissa mumbled as she stood up. “I never saw you come in.”
Melissa strolled off in to the elevator. Takara bit her lip and entered InuYasha's office. She saw InuYasha on his desk and smiled. He looked up, warm golden eyes suddenly turning angry.
“What the fuck do you want?”
Takara sucked in a breath, frowning. “I came here to apologize.” She bit out, taking a seat in front of him.
“Apologize?”
Takara nodded. “Yes.”
“You have thirty seconds to speak and to get the fuck out of my office.” InuYasha snapped, leaning back.
Takara blushed. “I'm sorry, okay. I'm sorry I jepordized your relationship with Kagome. It wasn't my place, I was only a little jealous. I mean, you barely knew the girl.”
“It's none of your business when I knew her or not. You don't know nothing.”
“I'm sorry, InuYasha.” Her eyes watered. “At least I'm trying to apologize!”
“Keh! Don't get in my life again!” He yelled. “Who the hell let you in here anyway, I told Melissa not to let anyone in!”
Takara shot up. “Your secretary wasn't there! I snuck in!”
“Your sixty seconds are up, Takara. Get out.”
She snorted and suddenly looked honest and serious. “I really am sorry, InuYasha. For everything.” She sighed. `This is wrong…oh Kami, what am I doing?'
InuYasha walked over to his office doors and opened them. “You apologized, now get out.”
`I'm a little sorry for this, InuYasha, but its necessary.' Takara huffed and on the way out, her shoe was caught and she slipped. InuYasha's arms shot out and caught her before she fell. She saw Melissa sitting at her desk again and nod only once. Closing her eyes, Takara grabbed the front of InuYasha's shirt, straightning up to press her lips against his.
He growled, she wrapped her arms around him and kissed him passionately. He growled again, more menacingly than the first time. Without hesitation, he shoved her back. “What the fuck are you doing?”
“I'm sorry,” Takara sighed, lowering her gaze. “I just love you is all.”
“Love me?” InuYasha echoed. He shook his head. “You don't love me, you just want all the money I have. You like the fame.”
Takara snorted, crossed her arms over her chest. “And you are telling me your little fiancé doesn't?”
InuYasha glared at her, growled fiercely. She squeaked and stepped back. “Yes, I'm telling you she isn't like you. She loved me long before I had any of this and I loved her. Don't you dare speak against her again.”
Without saying anything, Takara walked out, glancing at Melissa who winked in return. InuYasha slammed the doors closed. He made a face and walked in to his private bathroom to rinse his mouth. `Ugh' he blinked as he stared in to the mirror. Turning around, he slowly walked out of the bathroom and grabbed his phone. He skimmed through the numbers until he found the planner's number.
“Hello.”
“Kagome should be here within the hour, you have everything ready?”
“Yup.”
“Okay then. We'll be there.”
“I'll see you then, InuYasha. Bye.”
He closed the phone and sat down, willing to work on a few things he had to do before Kagome came by.

“Kagome! What are you doing?”
Mrs. Higurashi stood wide-eyed by the doorway of her bedroom. “I'm leaving,” Kagome said.
“What?” Mrs. Higurashi ran besides her daughter. “Where?”
“To New York.” Kagome answered, wiping some tears away with the back of her hand.
“But honey, what happened? I thought you were going in two weeks. Did InuYasha say he didn't want to go?”
Kagome didn't stop throwing her clothes and stuff in to her suitcase. She snapped it closed before opening the second one. “Mama,” Kagome sighed. “My flight leaves at four-thirty.”
“Kagome! You can't do this!”
Kagome looked at her mother. “Yes I can.” She answered. She finished putting her things in, closed it and dropped the rest on her shoulder-bag. She stopped in front of Mrs. Higurashi. “He cheated on me, Mama.”
“Don't runaway, Kagome. Have you changed that much?”
Kagome grabbed her passport and her ticket. “What do you mean?”
“Ever since you forgot…you've been like another person.”
Kagome slumped her shoulders. “Maybe I am a different person.” She paused. “I need to fly alone, Mama. I need to do this.”
“You never ran away, Kagome.”
“I'm not running,” Kagome said. “I just need time. I'll come back, but Mama?” Mrs. Higurashi looked at her. “Please don't tell InuYasha where I am. I need to do this, I need to learn how to deal with things on my own. Please, it hurts so much already, I don't need more. Please, please, please don't tell him.”
Mrs. Higurashi drew her daughter in to a hug. “I'll honor your wishes, Kagome. He shall never hear a word about you from me.”
“Thank you, Mama.”
“I'll give you a ride if this is what you really want.”
“It is.”
“Alright then, go say goodbye to Souta and Grandpa. My little girl, you're growing up so quickly. Are you sure this is where your heart truly is?”
`No' “Yes”
::*::*::*::* ::*::*::*::* ::*::*::*::* ::*::*::*::* ::*::*::*::* ::*::*::*::*
Mrs. Higurashi opened the door to find an angry hanyou staring at her. “Where's Kagome?” He said desperately, showing the woman Kagome's ring.
Mrs. Higurashi shook her head. “I assume you know she saw?”
“Fuck,” He growled. “It wasn't what she thought. That stupid bitch tricked me!” he made a face. “It sounds lame, I know, but please, I need to talk to her.”
“I'm sorry, InuYasha.”
“What?”
“She's not here…”
“Where'd she go?”
Mrs. Higurashi shook her head. “That I can't say, but she said she needed time.”
“What?!”
Did I disappoint you or let you down?
Should I be feeling guilty or let the judges frown?
'Cause I saw the end before we'd begun,
Yes I saw you were blinded and I knew I had won.
So I took what's mine by eternal right.
Took your soul out into the night.
It may be over but it won't stop there,
I am here for you if you'd only care.
“She left me,” InuYasha whispered. Ayame stepped back, grabbed his hand and pulled him in to the house.
“Why?”
“Uncle?” Akina winced when she saw InuYasha's face. He sunk down near the door and stared at the ring in his hand. He blinked slowly, feeling tears prick his eyes. Did Kagome know that she had just ripped his heart out for the second time? He frowned.
You touched my heart you touched my soul.
You changed my life and all my goals.
And love is blind and that I knew when,
My heart was blinded by you.
You changed my life and all my goals.
And love is blind and that I knew when,
My heart was blinded by you.
I've kissed your lips and held your head.
Shared your dreams and shared your bed.
I know you well, I know your smell.
I've been addicted to you.
Shared your dreams and shared your bed.
I know you well, I know your smell.
I've been addicted to you.
Walking back up the Higurashi shrine stairs, InuYasha saw Mrs. Higurashi sitting at the very top. He sunk besides her.
“It hurts worse the second time,” He mumbled, sighing.
“Darling, give her time.”
“Where did she go? Tell me, please, I need her. I need to tell her.”
“I can't do that, InuYasha. She needs to fly alone.”
Goodbye my lover.
Goodbye my friend.
You have been the one.
You have been the one for me.
I am a dreamer but when I wake,
You can't break my spirit - it's my dreams you take.
And as you move on, remember me,
Remember us and all we used to be
I've seen you cry, I've seen you smile.
I've watched you sleeping for a while.
I'd be the father of your child.
I'd spend a lifetime with you.
I know your fears and you know mine.
We've had our doubts but now we're fine,
And I love you, I swear that's true.
I cannot live without you.
“No she doesn't!” He yelled, stomping towards Goshinboku. He glared at the tree. “What the fuck was she thinking?”
“She was thinking based on what she saw!”
He swung around to face Kagome's mother. “No! She wasn't thinking at all, she never thinks. She always jumps to conclusions, damnit”
He kicked the small bench sitting by the tree, shattering it. The woman besides him gasped and took a step back. “InuYasha…”
“I loved her damnit, wasn't that enough for her? Did I have to spell it out that I wouldn't hurt her? Damnit, Kagome…you stupid wench.”
Goodbye my lover.
Goodbye my friend.
You have been the one.
You have been the one for me.
And I still hold your hand in mine.
In mine when I'm asleep.
And I will bear my soul in time,
When I'm kneeling at your feet.
Goodbye my lover.
Goodbye my friend.
You have been the one.
You have been the one for me.
I'm so hollow, baby, I'm so hollow.
I'm so, I'm so, I'm so hollow.
“I promised her forever, doesn't she understand that youkai take one mate forever?” He glared up in to the sky. “She promised to be with me the first time and she broke that. She promised me forever this time…and she left.”
He sunk down by the tree trunk, sighing. He closed his eyes, breathed in deeply. `I'll find you Kagome and when I do...'
`You'll do what?'
`I'm done waiting, I can't take it anymore.'
`She's our mate'
`She wants to kill me, I can't take this a second time.' He grimaced.
`I'm sorry, InuYasha….' A tiny voice said.
`Kagome…I'll find you, wench and when I do…' He opened his eyes and squeezed the ring in his palm. `I'll beat you black and blue, I swear.'
