CH. 17 Is This Love?

Kagome spun in the mirror to see her dress lift and twirl and felt like a movie star. She had said her goodbyes to the women who made her look glamorous and now all that was left to do was go downstairs to join in on the fun. The only problem was her nerves and the fact that every time she thought about walking out she got the feeling she was gonna throw up.

Taking a deep breath Kagome reached for the door handle. She stuck her head out of the room and heard voices from the main hallway echoing up into her quarters. She better get down there before the party started without her.

She got to the top of the stairs and froze. Her breath hitched in her throat and stung her lungs when she seen what was going on downstairs.

Kikyo had her arms thrown around Inuyasha in a grip so tight she was able to lift her feet off the ground. Inuyasha didn't stand a chance before her pink cotton candy lips were all over him.

`She's must be drunk.' Kagome tried to convince herself. `Either she's drunk or they're both already drunk.' Kagome reassured herself that Inuyasha wasn't still attracted to Kikyo or she'd have been the one getting ready at his house. But still she stood at the top of the staircase frozen. Besides she didn't want any confrontations and with Kikyo it was likely to happen sooner or later. Kagome mentally prepared herself for some sort of battle with the ex, and it's not like it really mattered because everyone knows they're just friends. Without warning Miroku came into view and soon gave way to her hiding.

“Come down here Kagome and join in on the fun.” He said not realizing the ordeal he just put her in. All heads swiveled to Kagome's direction making it obvious she'd been standing up there. Kagome sent Miroku a glare he recognized even from a distance. The last one, the one most reluctant to turn around was Inuyasha.

In all fairness someone could have warned him for the kick in the gut he was about to receive. As if he was just thrown from a building he suddenly felt like he was floating, maybe the house was tilting to the side or maybe it was spinning, he didn't know. Bottom line was Kagome took his breath away and he lost his footing. Kikyo was soon discarded in favor of Inuyasha running up the stairs towards Kagome.

Gods, he could smell her, subtle and sweet with something exotic and exciting thrown in. He loved her smell, he loved everything about her and he wasn't going to wait another night to tell her or leave her in the dark about his feelings. She had to know.

She was going to put it all off like none of it bothered her at all. She was good at doing it; she'd gotten away with acting like nothing bothered her, her entire life. What's one more night she asked herself? Taking a deep breath she properly let Inuyasha escort her down the stairs for at least the 40 or so people who now gathered in the hall. She didn't know why she felt Inuyasha was actually obligated to do this for her but like everything else this past month it just seemed natural. If someone had told her a year ago that this was happening she would have bet her life that they were wrong… but here she was.

Inuyasha's hand was heavy, she could tell he was solid and it made her ache to touch him even more. He looked so sexy and gorgeous in his outfit. It was so him with the loose shirt and snug slacks. He looked so fabulous running up to her she almost wanted to cry. What made it worse was she didn't know the reason for wanting to shed tears at seeing him. Was this love she asked herself? The thought scared her so much she gulped in air and blocked it out.

More than once she lost her balance on the steps and tipped in his direction for support. Though being as strong as he was all it took was a lift of his arm to right her again and hold her up.

Gods, she was clumsy she cursed herself.

“So glad you could finally join us Kagome.” Kikyo stood proud and tall at the bottom of the stairs, “And how nice of Inuyasha to escort you down here.” Kikyo gushed like she had something to do with it.

Kagome groaned, so it starts! Inuyasha growled low in his throat. This night wasn't going to go as planned if Kikyo stuck around, though everyone knew she wasn't invited the only one who didn't was Kagome. He was going to have to make it clear to everyone especially her that she wasn't wanted here.

“If you're looking for the booze Kikyo it's downstairs in the bar area.” Inuyasha snorted and quickly dragged Kagome in the opposite direction.

First he wanted to let her know how great the ice sculpture turned out.
