Chapter 3
It had been several days since his return, and now Inuyasha leaned against the trunk as he sat high in the branches of a tree. That visit had shaken him, nearly to the core. He'd heard what some of the men were muttering once his uncle was out of mortal earshot. Those two-faced pigs! They'd acted like they'd swallowed lemons, rind and all. Even with the title his birth had given him, they wouldn't give him a chance. He was a lord to both systems, yet despised by both. Oh well, they'd get theirs, but not at the price of human blood on his claws.
'No place to call home, so I have to carve one out.' He growled softly, still angry about what they'd said. His simmering anger abruptly faded when he caught the scent of a midsummer's thunderstorm. It was a scent of purity and power. 'Kikyo.'
The miko emerged from the shadows of the forest, carrying a basket of herbs. Herbs he recognized from his mother's supply. Those were to treat severe burns. Who was hurt that badly?
The woman's stormy eyes scanned the canopy.
Inuyasha leapt down, silently landing in front of her. The miko relaxed, knowing that he wouldn't attack. If that had been his intention, she and he would both be long dead. They had the strength to fatally wound one another. "You have made yourself scarce lately." Kikyo commented.
"Feh. You had a little girl with you. I would've scared her." His posture spoke volumes. He'd tried approaching children, most likely when he'd been one, and they'd either run away screaming or were cruel to him. Golden eyes passed from her into the shadowed wood.
"That girl is my younger sister. Her name is Kaede." Kikyo followed his gaze. "What do you see?"
Even she knew that his senses were far beyond those of mortals. A sharp golden gaze pierced the darkness. "Your sister." He sniffed the air, catching a young scent; one that smelled pleasantly of thyme.
Kaede emerged with a gulp. She trembled under her sister's glare. "Kikyo, he's getting worse. His cries are frightening the villagers."
Kikyo blinked. "They have no reason to fear him. He cannot move from his shelter." She watched curiously as her sister approached the hanyou. Inuyasha grew still, as tense as a coiled spring. He'd leap away if she so much as whimpered.
Instead of screaming, the little girl grabbed the sleeve of his haori, moving it away from his hand. The claws that graced his fingers would have looked out of place on someone appearing more human, but suited him. Yes, they were dangerous, but so was the hand of the farmer, empty or not. He'd given her no reason to fear him. Her hand released the red cloth then she stepped back with a smile. She gazed into his golden eyes then ran off.
The miko noticed his confusion. "Kaede won't fear you unless you give her a reason to. From what I've seen, she would treat you with respect." Her gaze grew curious. "Why do you desire the Shikon?"
Inuyasha snorted, folding his arms and hiding his hands in red sleeves from habit. "I've been alone most of my life. My older half brother despises me. If I were youkai instead of hanyou, I wouldn't live in constant danger and would be accepted."
Kikyo's eyes widened marginally. He desired to be accepted and was tired of being alone. "Inuyasha, you could use the jewel to become mortal." Her tone nearly revealed her excitement. She'd been intrigued by him when she'd first seen him, and had grown to love him. If he chose this, she could have a husband. She approached and placed a hand on his cheek. "As humans we could live our lives together."
His golden eyes registered shock. Kikyo meant it. Her scent was devoid of deception. "What would happen to you?"
"Such a wish would purify the jewel out of existence. I am she who guards the jewel. If there is no jewel, I would be but a woman."
Inuyasha pulled back. "I need to think about it." Wind blew through the clearing, carrying the stench of burnt flesh and the faint odor of death.
A pain-filled cry echoed through the forest. At this, Kikyo turned to leave. "I must go, Inuyasha. His injuries must be seen to." Stormy eyes met gold for the last time that day. She faded into the forest, trying to shake the sense of dread that came over her when she thought of that wounded bandit, Onigumo.
The hanyou blinked at her retreating form. She was uneasy; he could smell it. But what could get under her skin so? It didn't make sense, she was a strong person.
Finally, he leapt back into the trees. There was a lot on his mind. Kikyo had thrown a loaded suggestion at him. He felt so alone, and the miko was accepting him, if he joined her in her humanity. Now he had a chance to consider other than what he thought had been his only option.
The sun shifted from early afternoon to late evening and he still sat in the tree, undecided. Could he really give up his hanyou senses and strength to be with someone? Would his uncle recognize him if he did? What would become of his frightened retainer, Myoga? So many questions whirled about his head, exhausting him and making him dizzy.
Kikyo was a woman of noble character. She'd meant her offer and had never tried to kill him, as he'd never tried to kill her. Sure, she'd pinned him to trees by his clothes when he tried to snatch the jewel that one time but that had been all. Was she the one his soul had been searching for, his mind unknowing?
