As the sun peaked up over the horizon, shining all of its rays onto the world, it managed to light up everything in its wake- including a pair of brown eyes. Wincing from the dark to light conversion, Kagome peeled back her eyelids to expose her eyes to the world. After blinking a few times for her eyes to adjust, she was finally able to look out her bedroom window. Like most mornings, her awakening didn't come with a smile. It was just another beginning to another day of hiding.
It was about two years ago when demons flew out of her family shine in her backyard. They had destroyed everything in its wake; everything except the humans. Seeing the vast amount of human population, they decided to enslave them all instead of killing them on the spot. Now, the world was filled with different powerful demon regions with humans working as their slaves.
The region that Kagome lived in was one of a powerful dog demon. She had never seen him, but knew that the caliber of his strength was no match for all of the humans in the world. She had heard rumors of him, horrible rumors. She was in no rush to meet her region demon.
Cringing at the thought of coming face to face with this powerful being, Kagome finally decided to give her body the much needed stretch before sitting up in her bed. Her place was quite small, but it worked for her.
Since the invasion, Kagome fled from her hometown. Unable to find her family, she was forced to leave without them. She had left with her close friends, but they were picked off one by one in the process of liberating themselves from the horrors of their town. Making it on a boat, Kagome managed to leave her country. She was, however, unsure of her location on the world map.
At first, she thought the move was good. Being in another place, there were no demons at all. It didn't take them long to get there, though. Their plot was total domination.
After managing a second escape from imprisonment, Kagome had found an abandoned tree house in the woods; the place she lived now. There was a discrete ladder covered in moss that allowed the girl to climb the tree. Once up, there was a door that lead inside of the tree house. Finding it too obvious, Kagome had camouflaged it with tree bark so it looked as if it wasn't there.
Inside the house was simply a bed with the necessary blankets, a chair that held her clothes, a pot with fresh water in it, a pot filled with berries from the forest, and her bow and quiver in the corner. After the invasion, Kagome picked up a discrete way to survive. Guns were too loud, but a bow was silent. It took her a while, but now she was an expert shooter.
Not much was in her quaint place. It was her empty home. She had been living in this tree house for about seven months now. She was lucky when she stumbled across it, and she was still lucky since she had managed to be away from all of the demons for this long.
Standing up, Kagome felt the cold morning air hitting her once warm body. Shivering to change clothes, Kagome returned back into the warm bed until her new clothes were warm as well. Once she was a comfortable temperature, Kagome made her way out of the bed and grabbed her bow and quiver full of arrows. She made it a point to try and hunt once every two weeks. Her body wasn't going to live off of berries forever- she needed meat.
She didn't hunt all that much because she knew she'd have to cook the meat. Cooking meat lead to building a fire. A fire meant vulnerability to demons. She had seen it too many times in her past.
A group she use to reside in made a fire for everyone to be warm. It was the first fire they had made since being on the run. Once they were far enough in the woods to think they were safe, they decided that a fire would be best. While Kagome was out getting supplies for the fire, she only heard their faint screams echoing through the trees. She knew the fire had been the reason they had been caught. While her old group wasn't eaten, they were enslaved to the demonic race. She figured this since there was no blood at the sight of capture; only scattered and ruffled footprints remained.
If she were to make a fire to cook food, she'd extinguish it once its purpose was met. She was not going to end up like the others. She lived and she learned.
The bark-made door cracked as Kagome pushed it open. With little bits of the brown wood falling to the ground, Kagome knew it was only moments until it would give in. It was time for her to hunt and to find another bark door.
The immediate drop to the ground didn't scare Kagome, since she had gotten used to it. When the door was all the way open, she turned her body to face the inside of her home before she began to climb down. When she was secure on the ladder, she reached up and shut the door so no one would find it.
The moss was cold to her fingers as she climbed down. She knew that since winter was coming, she'd have to make a trip into a close by town to get gloves and other necessary clothes. It would be her first full winter in this home of hers. She had found it near the end of winter last season. She was excited to have a place right from the beginning this time.
The moss at the bottom of the tree hugged her feet as she planted them firmly on the ground. Taking her feet out of the mush, Kagome knew that her door would no longer be hidden in the winter since the moss would die. That was another thing on her 'to do' list.
The woods were familiar to her since she had spent so much time in them. Knowing which routes to take in order to avoid her traps, Kagome made her way to her favorite place to find rabbits. It was over a hillside that lead into a meadow. Some days, she would just sit on the hill and watch the animals hopping about. Occasionally she'd see a deer, but knew she'd be stupid to kill one.
As she walked through the woods, leaves and twigs cracked under her feet. Looking up into the trees, she saw that the leaves were changing colors and falling to the ground. Here eyes squinted in anger at the trees; now she had to be extra careful.
Her stepping patterns changed as she made her way through the woods. She'd place her feet in unoccupied places to avoid noise. When that was not an option, she'd silently scoot all of the brush out of the way and move on. The tedious trail walking only reminded her of how winter would be. A sigh escaped her mouth as she knew she'd have to cover her tracks in order to remain hidden from society.
Making it up the hill, Kagome decided to sit at the top and wait until she saw a rabbit coming her way. She became sad as she noticed the color fading from the meadow below. Soon it would be nothing but a white blanket on top of the ground. At least she could track the animals since their marks would be etched into the snow.
It wasn't long until a rabbit made it her way. Setting up her bow, she placed a homemade arrow on it and readied herself. She was excited for meat. Even though it had been only 2 weeks since she had had some, it felt like ages. Holding her breath, Kagome pulled back the arrow and shot.
Right as her arrow left the bow, Kagome quickly looked to her left, lowering herself to the ground. A scream had made its way to her, causing her to miss her prey. Not thinking about that at the moment, Kagome waited to see what would happen. All of the animals that were in the meadow were running away; maybe she should run, too.
As the screams came closer, Kagome saw a young girl run from out of the woods and into the clearing of the meadow. Behind her was a small rat demon. He was yelling at her to stop, but the girl would not listen. The rat continued to preach the wonders of being an enslaved human to the girl, but she refused to stop.
Kagome's heart sank. She had a gut feeling that she needed to leave and hide in the secrecy of her home, but another feeling told her that she could kill the rat demon.
Taking her bow into her hand and readying herself once more, Kagome ran down the hill and pointed her bow and arrow at the rat demon. "Stop right there!" Kagome yelled as she halted in front of the demon's path. "Leave her alone. Turn around and leave this place." Her voice was strong and steady, not showing any fear.
"Ha! You think you can defeat me?!" The rat demon who was once small before transformed into a bigger rat demon. His voice grew deeper as he looked at the raven haired girl below him. "I think no." he spoke as he snatched Kagome up in his hand. "It looks like you have been living here for quite some time. Ha, well you've just been evicted. Time for you to find a new home."
Kagome looked behind her and saw the girl standing in horror. "Run!" Kagome shouted at the girl as she felt the rat's grip on her tighten. Her eyes peered back at the demon. She couldn't believe she had fallen for this trick of his. Her sight began to fade as the demon's grip was too strong for her body to breath. Her last vision was of him laughing at her. She was now dead to the world.
