With mumbling voices all around her, the need to open her eyes became great. As hard as she tried to pry her eyes open, her body refused such an action. When her eyes couldn't shine to the world, she began to feel her surroundings. Quickly, she was interrupted by the motion. Her body ached. Wincing in pain, Kagome continued to lay still. Searching through her memories, she could see the fading colors of the plants that surrounded her. She could see the land and its beauty. How did all of this happen? It was only after moments of digging deeper when she remembered the little girl and the pseudo sized rat demon.
Forcing herself through the pain, Kagome began to feel around her with blind eyes. She could feel a metal wall next to her that appeared to be rusting, a hard concrete floor that numbed her body from its cold structure, and a bar as far out as she could reach. She was imprisoned.
Her chest began to heavily move up and down as she only imagined what her prison must look like. Struggling still, she finally managed open her eyes. The sight horrified her.
She had been right about the rust peeling from the walls in a downward motion. The walls metal scraps were a fading green and grey with the burnt orange rust coming off of the walls. The bars in front of her were of the same status. She couldn't muster up the strength to look at the floors, and a part of her didn't want to.
So many whispers echoed through the halls of the prison that it sounded like a constant scream, making the feel of the place seem that much more intimidating. She couldn't make out what anyone was saying, only assuming that it was an escape plot. Within the rare breaks of silence from the screaming whispers, Kagome could hear the sobs of others. 'How long have they been here? How long will I be here?' thoughts raced through her mind as she wondered if this would be her life from now on.
Her thoughts were soon interrupted when she noticed a noise coming from within her cell. She assumed that all that was behind her was a wall. She wasn't expecting to be in the presence of something else. Closing her eyes, Kagome took a few breaths before deciding that it was time to see what resided behind her. Slowly moving her head to face the other direction, Kagome's eyes widened. It was the girl from the meadow.
"Ah, no." Kagome's voice was sad as she stared at the little girl. She had raven hair that resembled hers almost exactly. Her eyes were brown and soft with cheeks stained from tears. This girl couldn't be older than 11. She was just a kid. "I hoped you'd get away."
Even though the girl didn't speak, Kagome could still hear the sound of her voice from when she had screamed in the meadow. She couldn't help but feel bad for this young woman. Kagome had had a childhood, but this girl had nothing. She was so young and was already having her naivety stripped from her. It wasn't fair. Why would the Demon race want children anyway? They wouldn't be able to do much like teens and adults could. This only proved that these monsters were al heartless.
"It'll be okay." Reaching her other hand out towards her, Kagome managed to touch the girls foot. Holding onto it, the only response the girl gave was the satisfaction of heat upon her frozen skin. "I'm Kagome." Slowly inching her way towards the small girl, Kagome could feel all of her muscles protesting her movements. Unable to give in, she managed to make it to the child. Sitting up next to her, Kagome scooped the girl up into her lap and held her, slowly rubbing her arms to try to keep her warm. The response Kagome got was the child leaning into her. "Why didn't you run?"
The girl perched her head back onto Kagome's shoulder and looked her in the eyes. She so badly wanted to speak, but ended up not saying a word. Her eyes were friendly and trusting, making Kagome feel like the girl trusted her. Peering back in the same fashion, a smile emerged on the girls face. The smile was incomplete and crooked, it made Kagome think that there was still innocence in the cruel world.
Their reverie didn't last long when they noticed the hum that echoed through the halls had faded. Not a peep or sob was heard throughout the halls. Taking over the usual prison sound were heavy boots slamming across the floor. When a foot was planted on the ground, the heavy sound of the other pounding on the floor repeated over and over. Until it stopped.
A shadow grew across the two girls' cell, falling upon their cold bodies. Looking up at the figure, all Kagome could make out was that the figure was a man. His silhouette gave it all away: broad shoulders, strong cheek bones, muscular body. What Kagome didn't know was what he wanted with the two of them.
"Looks like you've finally awaken." A smooth voice entered her ears as she watched the man's shadowed jaw move. "You've been out for quite a few days." The thought of being out for a few days scared Kagome. Maybe that's why she was so weak.
"What do you want?" Kagome asked rashly while she held the child a little tighter.
The figure only smiled in reaction to her question. You could tell that the question was asked frequently in the prison. A small chuckle was the only reply to the girls question. He motioned his hands to what appeared to be someone who worked there to open the cell door.
The sound of the rusted door screeched throughout the halls. Both of the girls held their ears in reaction to the sound. With their ears plugged, the females couldn't hear the footsteps enter their cell. The only way Kagome had figured out they were in there was when she felt the girl taken off of her. Ripping her hands off of her ears, she saw the man holding the small girl.
"What are you doing?!" She screamed at them as she no longer knew her body was pained. Standing up, she made her way to the bars of the cell, holding onto them as she stared at the man in front of her.
"It's time for her to be put to work in the mines. Gold isn't going to dig itself." the man spoke as he held the struggling girl in his arms. His demonic strength was far greater than her human strength, making her fight proved futile.
Kagome couldn't believe that the girl was to be put to work. She was so young. It infuriated her that they were doing this. "She's just a child!" Kagome stated as her eyes grew hard with anger. The man seemed to ignore her, only putting on a wicked smirk in return. The action only angered her more. She couldn't let them take the girl. If she did, her entire actions in the woods would be in vein. She did what she had to do to save the girl, and now she was going to try it again. "Take me, don't take her."
Turning around, the demon returned to Kagome's cell, looking at her with curious eyes. "Why?" his head tilted as he spoke, wondering why she would do this.
"She'd be no use to you. I'm older and stronger. I could do far more than she could. Please, just take me instead." Her brown eyes narrowed from the girl to the demon. His smirk had never left his face.
As if he were agreeing, he had the guard open the cell and bring Kagome out to her. With wobbly knees, Kagome fell to the floor at the demon's feet. "But you're so weak." He gave the girl to the guard to hold, kneeling down to Kagome's level. "You're worthless. I should just kill you right here." His words burned her ears as Kagome looked at the man in his eyes.
Standing up tall, the demon showed Kagome his hand before elongating his claws. "Your blood will be spilled all over the floor." a laughing tone was in his voice as he brought his hand up. The demon only paused for a moment before bringing his claws down right onto the girl.
Squeezing her eyes shut, Kagome opened them when nothing happened. Looking up, she saw the demon looking behind him at a man who held his arm in place over his head. He was a beautiful sight. His long white hair flowed behind him elegantly, with golden eyes that matched his pale skin. A purple moon was perfectly center on his forehead with two stripes coming out of each cheek.
"That's enough." her savior spoke as he let go of the man's hand. The demon who was about to kill Kagome was in shock. His eyes were wide with fear and confusion.
"Wh... Why Lord Sesshomaru? She's of no use to us." he stuttered as he brought his wrist into his hand to rub the soreness from Sesshomaru's grip.
"I'll take them." Sesshomaru looked Kagome and then at the little girl. Nodding his head to the prison guard, Sesshomaru turned around and walked away.
The still stunned demon darted a glare at Kagome. "You're lucky, bitch." he spoke as he turned around and left the vicinity. All Kagome could do was snort at his remark to her. She wasn't lucky. She was imprisoned to a race of demons; that's not what she would call luck. Standing up from her knees, she looked over at the guard who placed the small girl on the floor. Taking the girl's hand in her own, Kagome followed the guard. She was too weak to try to run, plus everything that wasn't in a cell was a demon. She knew she had no fighting chance. Now that she was out of the cell, she knew she now had to find a way out of this slaved life. She would escape with this girl.
Looking down at the small human next to her, Kagome knew that it wasn't a choice to leave her in here by herself. If this young girl had managed two years of an invasion without being caught until recently, she must be good at hiding. She would be a great asset to Kagome. Not knowing what was going to come ahead of them, Kagome knew she was headstrong. She knew she'd get out. She knew she was no ones prisoner.
