You Only Get One Chance At Life

Summary: College student Kagome Higurashi is happily engaged to Kouga Ookami. Right? Wrong. Kagome's relationship with Kouga has been doomed for a while. She just never had the heart to tell poor Kouga. So here she was, engaged to a hopeless and loveless marriage (on her part anyway), struggling with classes, stressed from cheerleading, and just about ready to give up on her life in general and run away, when a mysterious new guy enters the scene. He with the piercing golden eyes, dashing silver hair, and cutest dog-ears she had ever seen. He was everything she had ever wanted, bold, funny, intelligent, sexy, seductive, the list goes on. And she wanted him. He wanted her as well. But only two problems. One, she was engaged to Kouga. Two, He was her teacher.

Chapter One

Kagome Higurashi yawned as she slammed her hand on her maddening alarm clock mercilessly. The little bugger had it coming. Waking her up at 6:30 in the morning like that, the nerve! But alas, she was awake now, so there was nothing she could do about it.

She got up and proceeded with her normal morning routine which consisted of going downstairs, fixing coffee, eating breakfast, and waking up her abnormally deep sleeping roommates, Sango and Rin. Once awake they stumbled downstairs for their coffee. Caffeine was a savior around this household. Without it there's no telling what would become of them.

Kagome showered and dressed in dark blue jeans with a black cami-top. She put a jean jacket over it and tied her hair into a messy bun before grabbing her messenger bag and walking downstairs to see a very interesting site.

Sango was sitting in a stool at the bar and was fast asleep in her bowl of cereal. Rin meanwhile, was stirring some oatmeal on the stove and was asleep with her head lolled to the side. Kagome shook her head at the sight and pulled Sango's head out of the cereal and shook her awake, then turned off the stove- stopping the oatmeal from burning- and shook Rin awake. Needless to say the look on their faces was priceless!

After another half hour the girls were all in Kagome's silver Mercedes-benz convertible after a rushed eating, showering and dressing on Sango and Rin's parts. “So I hear there's a frat party tonight, yall wanna go?” Sango asked them as she ruffled through her bag looking for her term paper. “Oh yeah, I heard about that. It's supposed to be the biggest bash until new years.” Rin replied.

“Yeah, I can't wait for new years, those parties are so wild. Haha, I don't think anyone has ever stayed sober at one.” Kagome put in as she turned into the college parking lot. It was already moderately full, but Kagome managed to squeeze into a spot close to the front. Most of the students opted for afternoon classes opposed to the morning ones, hence the reason she managed to get a spot so close.

“But yeah, sure lets go, we could use a little D&P” Kagome said as she got out and pulled her bag over her shoulder. D&P was her terminology of `Drinkin and Partyin'. The other two girls yawned their agreements before walking into the large college. Rin grabbed Kagome's arm as they were walking, “Rin, what the fu-“ “I think you forgot something” She pointed to Kagome's neck where a silver chain with a gold engagement ring hung.

“Oh! Shit thanks Rin!” Kagome hurriedly undid the chain and took the ring off, placing it on her ring finger. As she did she felt the weight being placed back on her shoulders. Another day living her own personal lie.

She was engaged to a man named Kouga Ookami. He was by far a very handsome man. Sweet, considerate, affectionate. Everything you would ever want in a man. But not Kagome. She wanted something more.

Kagome had met Kouga during her sophomore year in high school, she had been a struggling young bookworm trying to get around to her classes when she tripped down some stairs and fell right into the arms of Kouga. She had blushed like mad and apologized and thanked and apologized and thanked until she was blue in the face.

He seemed to think it was cute and helped her pick up her books, then proceeded to amaze her even more by walking her to her next class. Then he was waiting for her after that and walked her to her next one too! She had been stunned and blushed like crazy.

After that, when school was over he walked her to her house and they talked a bit more. She found out he was the captain and quarterback of the football team, ran track, and was a junior. And he found out she was president of her class, and a straight A student.

Their relationship started out strictly platonic, friends and nothing more. Kouga would come over to hang out or have her help him study, and she would go watch his games- being his own personal cheerleader he would say- and would get a ride home with him everyday for months.

But then one day it changed. It was the night after their team had won the big homecoming game. Biggest game of the season. Kouga ran up to her, ignoring all the shouts and cheers from his teammates and swooped her up into his arms spinning her around and then kissed her. He actually kissed her! She had been so shocked and surprised she didn't even realize when he pulled away. But when she did she was blushing like mad again.

He was so happy that night, she was sure that kiss had only been momentary madness on his part from the adrenaline of winning that game. He dragged her to the big after-party and made her loosen up and drink some and dance with him. The alcohol had taken its effect. Kagome- never having drank anything stronger than kool-aid before then- became tipsy after only one drink, causing her to grind into Kouga and dance like never before.

After that she found herself pinned to the fall by a very aroused wolf demon making out with her. She kissed back with passion and soon they found themselves stumbling to one of the backrooms. That was all Kagome could remember. The next morning she had awoken next to a very naked Kouga and found herself naked as well. Needless to say she screamed bloody murder.

It took Kouga a whole hour to calm the poor girl down enough to tell her that they never went all the way. They had pleasured each other orally but nothing more. She had been drunk and he would never take her virginity like that, no matter how hard it was to restrain himself.

Kagome while still being upset at the `orally' part, was relieved at the fact that her virginity still laid intact. She would never forgive herself if she lost it in a night of stupidity.

After that night Kagome avoided Kouga as much as she could. He tried to get a hold of her countless times but she refused to speak with him. It wasn't that she had been angry with him; She was just still a little apprehensive about what had almost happened. But then he had finally had enough of it and caught her one day after school.

He had been a sly one that's for sure. Kagome laughed as she thought about it now. He had planned everything perfectly. He got Sango- who was very much for them getting together- to distract her at her locker on their way out so she would forget one of her books, and then remind her on the way out so she would run back alone to get it. By that time the halls would have emptied out, giving him the perfect chance.

Kagome had gone back to her locker and opened it grabbing her book when she was suddenly turned around and pinned against the lockers unable to move. He silenced her irate yells with a heated kiss.

She had been shocked to say the least. Kagome could still remember word for word what he said next…hell she could remember everything that either of them said right then.

Flashback

“Kagome…I know you're still upset about what happened at the party and I'm sorry. But please…you cant just cut me off from your life like this. Ever since I first caught you and saved you from that fall 6 months ago you're all I can think about. You're the light that gets me through these pointless days. It kills me when you're not talking to me. I know you probably want anything but a relationship with me right now…but if nothing else let's at least be friends again. I'm not ready to lose you.” He pleaded and moved a strand of her hair out of her face.

Kagome looked at him through teary eyes, she was still very upset about the whole party ordeal but she too had missed him. Biting her lip anxiously, she looked up at him and nodded, “I…that was the sweetest thing anyone has ever said to me. I'm sorry I've been ignoring you Kouga…it's just, the whole party thing got me really freaked out ya know? So I just took it out on you I guess. I'm sorry. And, I don't know if I'm ready to completely have a relationship yet but, I'm willing to give it a try if you are.”

He was clearly elated and brought her to him in a fierce hug.

End Flashback

After that they took things slow, but by the end of the school year they were inseparable. Kouga took her to prom and they were named Prom King and Prom Queen. Then they were voted cutest couple in the yearbook and everyone wanted to be them.

By her junior year Kagome had blossomed and turned into a beautiful 17-year-old girl. She was no longer the shy, school-obsessed bookworm she had been the year before. No she was a beautiful, confident, alluring young woman. She even tried out for cheerleading and made captain, which made her even more appealing to everyone. And she was all Kouga's. All the girls wanted to be her, to have to looks, the popularity, the attention, and especially to have Kouga fawning all over them the way he does her.

And of course, all the guys wanted to be Kouga, to have his looks, strength, and especially his girl, Kagome. But most just settled on trying to be their best friends. But Kagome's best friend spots were full; Sango and Rin were her best friends to the end and no stupid popularity chasing bimbos were going to take their spots. Kouga also had his spots full with his pals Ginta and Hakaku. They were one big happy group. Sango and Rin even dated Ginta and Hakaku at one point. But they decided to just be friends.

Kouga took Kagome to his senior prom and once again, they were named Prom King and Prom Queen. Then in the yearbook, named cutest couple yet again. They had the perfect high school romance. That year Kouga graduated. The next year, they kept up their relationship wonderfully as Kagome struggled through her senior year, and Kouga struggled through his first year at college on his football scholarship. She took him to her senior prom, where yeah, you guessed it; they were named Prom King and Queen once more. And he took her to frat parties and college dances and all the good stuff.

They had plenty of nights out and romantic evenings together. They never had sex though. Kagome always told him she didn't want to until after marriage. But the reality of it was that she wanted her first time to be with someone she was in love with. And though they had been together for so long and had been the perfect couple. She felt no love for him. Well not the romantic, head-over-heels, to-die-for, heart-wrenching kind of love she knew she had waiting for her somewhere else.

She loved him yes, but not like that. Slowly the romance started dying. There was no more magic in their time together. It had turned into a routine almost. Before, every little thing he did, whether it was opening her car door for her, or bringing her flowers, would make her feel all giggly inside. But it got to where she felt a pang of sadness in her heart whenever he did anything like that.
She knew the fire was extinguished and that their relationship was pretty much over. In Rin's words when she broke up with a new guy, it got old. But he didn't realize it was the problem. On the night of her high school graduation Kouga took her out to dinner afterwards to celebrate and she was determined to leave high school and start fresh. Which meant she had to end their hollow relationship then.

Just as she was about to spit out the words, which she was sure were going to break his heart, he surprised her by taking her hands and standing her up beside the table. Then he revealed all of their friends and family was there in the restaurant and they all turned and looked with secret smiles. Kagome felt a sinking feeling in her gut as Kouga knelt down on one knee and pulled out a black velvet box.

He then opened it and revealed a beautiful gold-banded ring with 3 diamonds in it. The middle being the largest. It was beautiful to say the least. He then recited the most beautiful words any person had ever said to her, and it broke her heart with every one.

“Kagome, baby, you are the most beautiful woman on this planet. Hell in the universe. I know I don't deserve to have a woman like you by my side. But I have fallen in such a deep love with you. I love you more than anything or anyone in this world and I always will. I want you with me forever. I want to share my life with you and have you follow me everywhere I go in this life and let me follow you wherever you want to go as well. Baby, if you'll have me…Will you marry me?”

Those words were forever marked in her heart. As he asked that question she could feel her heart crumbling and the little willpower she had managed to gather up to break up with him, was fighting a losing battle in trying to stay strong.

But as she looked around and saw all of their friends, all of their family, all were teary eyed and smiling. Expecting her to say yes. Then she looked down into his big cerulean eyes. So open to her, so full of love and adoration. So ready to hear her utter the word `yes'. Her willpower lost its battle.

She fell to her knees and said the fateful `yes.' Then as he pulled her to him, hugging the life out of her murmuring continuous `I love you's', and everyone stood up clapping and whistling, congratulating them, the dam broke. She started crying. She cried her big blue eyes out. Of course everyone mistook it as tears of joy. The rest of the evening she spent on autopilot. Smiling whenever necessary. The only ones who noticed how fake her happiness really was were Sango and Rin.

But she never gave them the real answer why she was so upset. They were convinced she was happy with Kouga and would stay that way. Kagome never had it in her to tell them otherwise. So she kept her sadness to herself. And lived with it for 3 more months until college and then 4 months into it. And here she was now.

She couldn't wear the ring all the time. It hurt too much. So she just told her friends that she didn't want everyone thinking she was married yet since the ring went on the same finger. And she didn't want people judging her for getting married so soon and that was why she only wore the ring when she was around Kouga. Or so they thought.

Kagome sighed as she and Rin entered their 1st class. Sango had Earth Sciences 1st while she and Rin had Philosophy. They were supposed to be getting a new teacher since the old one had retired not long ago. They had been going on substitutes for a while now and changing subs every week or so was very hard on the students with all the papers and exams and such. So the Dean had came in the day before and told them he had interviewed many potential professors and had come to a decision. So they would have a new one by today.

“Damn! The only seats left are in the front row.” Rin sighed. This wasn't good. Nobody wanted to be in the front row on a day when they had a new teacher. That automatically singled you out. Kagome sighed once again. She was becoming a master of sighing these days. Taking a seat next to Rin she noticed she was sitting directly in front of the professors desk. Ugh! Was it her, or were the fates against her?

Just then the door opened and in stepped their new teacher. It was an old woman with gray greasy hair tied back into a bun, wearing a gray woman's business suit, looking very strict and mean.

“Yippee, we get an old bat” Someone in the back muttered. Kagome barely resisted a laugh at that one. “Hello class. I am Ms. Sarasuke. I will be your substitute for today. You were supposed to have a new professor today but he had some things to take care of so he will not be coming until Monday. Now! On with the lesson!” Ms. Sarasuke told them.

There was a collected sigh of relief throughout the classroom that this old bat wasn't their new professor. They went through the class, taking notes and writing down their assignment. Half the time they really didn't even need to do it because their next substitute wouldn't make them pass it up. But then again, they never knew when they would have a new one or the same one. So they did the assignments anyway.

Finally the old bat- er…Ms. Sarasuke, let them out and they left to meet up with Sango and go home to rest until their next classes at 11:15.

“Man, That old woman was a pain in the rear” Rin mumbled as she collapsed on the couch and kicked off her shoes. “Uh-huh, tell me about it.” Kagome agreed plopping down into a chair and reclining back. Sango just laughed, “You guys must not like your new professor huh?”

“Thank the gods above that she isn't. She was just a sub. The new guy's starting Monday.” Kagome told her. “Well give him hell for me” Sango laughed.

“Will do San, Will do” Rin murmured as she fell asleep. The other two laughed at her antics before Sango left to go to work. She worked at a bar serving and making drinks full time. She went after her 1st class and worked for 3 hours before leaving for lunch and her next classes and then went back at 5 to work until 10 on nights when she had school the next day, and until midnight on nights when she didn't.

After Sango left Kagome settled down and watched some TV before her cell phone started buzzing. She looked at the caller ID and her heart sank as she saw the last person she wanted to talk to's name come up. Sighing she flipped it open and answered it, “Gome here.”

“Hey baby” The voice of Kouga sounded through the phone. “Hey Hun” Kagome sighed once again. Soon she would be the master of the dramatic sigh, she was sure of it. “Are you busy tonight?” He asked her.

Kagome tried to think of something she had to do tonight. She had decided to go to the frat party with Rin and Sango. But he would insist on coming along if she told him. Hm…

“Well actually yeah I am. Sango, Rin, and me are going to have a girls night” Not a complete lie. In fact it wasn't a lie at all, they really were going to have a girls night…out.

“Oh, well I was going to see if you wanted to come over and spend a romantic night with me. But I guess since your busy.” He always did this whenever she was busy. Tried to make her feel bad about it but she had become immune a long time ago.

“Yeah, sorry bout that but I had these plans for awhile now.” A couple of hours anyway. “Okay, how about I come and pick you up for lunch then?” Kouga tried yet again. “I have plans with Rin. Sorry again Hun.” Kagome apologized. Well she would have plans with Rin as soon as she told her about it.

“Well damn Kagome. When am I goin to get to see you! We haven't had a night alone together in nearly two weeks!” Kouga told her in an irritated tone. Kagome really felt bad about it too. She just didn't think she could be alone with him without spilling her heart out and telling him how much she did not want to marry him.

“Okay, I don't have class tomorrow, so we'll spend the whole day together then, how about that?” She struck a compromise, which she knew he would have to turn down. He had class and work tomorrow. “Well I've got class and work tomorrow, but I can take off work. So after class I'll come pick you up, say around…4:30?”

Kagome's heart sank once again, but she knew she had gotten herself into this, and she did owe him. “Alright, sounds good to me. I'll see you then.” She agreed. “Alright, love you baby” Kouga then hung up. He never seemed to notice how she never said it back. Either that or he didn't care.

After they hung up she laid her phone down and then sat at the kitchen table with her head in her hands sighing. They had decided to wait until after they both graduated from college for the wedding. And that wouldn't come for another few years thank goodness. But Kouga was becoming aggravated at the little time they spent together along with the fact that he was ready to mate with her and his inner demon was becoming hard to bear.

He had even tried to persuade her to move the wedding up to over the summer, or hell, he was even all for them going to Las Vegas and getting married in one of those chapels there. Kagome had quickly but a damper on that idea. Kouga had been, to say the least, disappointed.

But he said he loved her and would wait for her. Unfortunately. Kagome closed her eyes. Yeah, she was so getting drunk tonight.

Kagome, Sango, and Rin entered the frat house and were immediately bombarded by the loud, room shaking music and scent of alcohol in the air. The house was packed full of people dancing and grinding together, making out on the couches or against walls, people drinking and laughing and just plain out partying.

“I've been needing a drink all day, scuse me yall!” Kagome shouted over the pounding music as she headed over to the bar. The other two girls nodded and followed, wanting a drink themselves.

“So you think there are any hot guys here tonight? Sango asked the other two as she sipped on her beer. Rin shrugged drinking her tequila, “I don't see any so far…” Kagome smiled, “Well you never know girls, the night is young and we are hot.” She then got her whiskey and drank it straight up asking for another.

“Um, hello, you're taken Kag, or have you forgotten that little ring your wearing?” Sango laughed. Kagome pouted a bit and glared, “Well now that you remind me. I may be engaged but I can still have a little fun.” Kagome wasn't even wearing her ring tonight. It was at home on her dresser where it would remain until the next day.

“You are so gonna get your ass busted if Kouga or one of his friends catches you with another guy.” Rin piped in. Kagome scowled, Wasn't it enough she went through this in her head all the time, but now these two had to butt in. Ugh, life sucked.

“Yeah, I know. But…think of this as a pre-bachelorette party. Girls are allowed a little fun during those.” Kagome winked to the other two. Sango smirked towards Rin, “Kagome's actually talking about cheating. Why whatever happened to our little innocent schoolgirl who was appalled at the idea of even hugging another guy?” Rin sighed in mock disappointment, “Where did we go wrong Kag, where oh where did we go wrong?”

“Oh shut up!” Kagome laughed. “I doubt I can even find anyone worth while here anyway. These parties can be very boring…Let's get out of here and go have some fun somewhere else? What do yall say?” She asked them. Rin raised an eyebrow, “And just where exactly do you want to go?”

Kagome rolled her eyes, “I don't know! I just want to go have some fun tonight. I want to get drunk, and have fun. That's all. There has to be somewhere we can go…” Sango shook her head a little, “Girl you are so gonna get us tossed in jail. I'm sure of it. But fine, lets go.”

Rin groaned, she so did not want to get thrown in the big house tonight. But Kagome's `fun' nights usually ended up with them in there until Kouga came and paid bail. Then he would commence to yell and scold them all until they passed out from exhaustion and he and Kagome wouldn't speak for a while until he came and begged for forgiveness claiming how he over-reacted. Then they would be peachy again. Oh well, it was quite entertaining.

So then the girls left the party and got in Kagome's car, driving off into town. “So anyone have any idea's?” Sango asked. “Not a one.” Rin replied as they turned down a street in the rich part of town. It was a shortcut to the trashy part where all the real parties were.

Slowly Kagome slowed the car down, causing the other two girls to look at her quizzically. “Kag, what-“ Sango started. “I think I just found us something to do.” The raven-haired girl smirked and looked at the house she parked in front of.

The other two looked as well and their eyes widened in horror at what they saw. Oh no…
