Of Shinigami and Angels
Blaze looked down when she felt a tug on her skirt to see a small girl looking up at her.
She crouched down to the girl's level. “What is it, little one?”
The little girl popped the thumb out of her mouth long enough to ask, “Are you an angel?” before sticking her thumb back in again.
Blaze smiled a little. “What makes you ask that?”
“Cause you got wings,” the child said, this time around her thumb.
“How do you know?” Blaze asked gently.
“I can see `em. You're tryin' to hide `em.”
“Ah, I see. No, I'm not an angel, baby.”
“That's what the other angel said.”
Blaze's eyebrows quirked up. “What other angel?”
“He was a boy. His wings looked fluffy an' white. Kinda weird cause they were stickin' out the sides of his head.”
“I see.”
“Momiji,” the little girl's mother called. “Stop bothering that lady. I'm sorry, ma'am. I don't know why she does this. It's only every once in a while that she asks people if they're angels.”
“That's okay. Maybe she can see something others can't.”
The woman shrugged and pulled her daughter along behind her.
“Hey, Momiji,” Blaze called. The little girl turned to look at her and Blaze flashed her gorgeous red and gold wings for a second.
The little girl grinned and skipped along happily after her mother.
“Ow! Do you even realize how bright your wings are, Blaze?” Hisoka complained, rubbing his eyes.
“Oh, where's the harm? Considering she can obviously see them even while they're hidden.”
“That isn't the point.”
“Then what is the point?”
“There are bound to be other forces around if that little girl is right about seeing other “angels”. You're getting as reckless as Tsuzuki,” Hisoka said, watching Tsuzuki come out of one of the pastry shops with his arms full of sweets. “It's a minor miracle he isn't as round as he is tall,” Hisoka sighed.
“Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I shall fear no evil. For I am the baddest bitch in the valley,” Blaze said grinning.
“All the same. You shouldn't be so careless.”
“You've been taking lessons from Chiro in being uptight.”
“No. I think he has the market cornered on that,” Watari said, coming behind Blaze and hugging her. Then smiling at Tatsumi over Blaze's shoulder.
“Yutaka, don't make me tie you up somewhere and gag you,” Tatsumi said, leaning forward to kiss Blaze.
“Promises, promises,” Watari said. “Tease.”
“Okay! Enough! I don't want to know anymore! I already know too much about your collective sex lives as it is!” Hisoka said, looking thoroughly appalled.
Blaze was looking thoughtful and not paying attention to the conversation going on around her. “I wonder who the other “angel” was.”
Tsukasa Amou's head shot up from where it had been resting on his folded arms. He had felt something incredibly strong and oddly familiar. But it had only been a flash for a fraction of a second and he couldn't get a lock on it.
“Amou-kun, are you okay?” Mana asked, looking worried.
“I'm fine. I just . . . felt something.”
“So did I,” Naoya said, glancing around to see if he could find the source. “Something stronger than Kusakabe in god form. But it was only a flash.”
“It might have just been a random power surge. It happens sometimes in the aftermath of so much fighting,” Tomonori said. He was escorting them around the city considering he was the only one who could drive.
It was the last free weekend before school started again and they were keeping Mana company while she did her last minute school shopping. They were currently in one of the tea shops having a late lunch.
“Are you sure you're okay, Tsukasa?” Tomonori asked. “You're really pale. Should we get started back?”
“No. I'm okay. It just felt so familiar is all.”
The others looked at him worriedly. There was so much about his past that they had yet to piece together. There was still the very real fear that any remaining Erasers might be looking for him.
“Maybe we should get going once Shiba gets back,” Kaname suggested.
“Good idea,” Mana said, glancing uneasily around.
Blaze flopped down on the grass humming softly to herself. They had stopped at the park near the area where they had been shopping. Tsuzuki was munching happily on his sweets while Hisoka looked on in mild horror and utter disgust.
“Ne, Blaze, I haven't heard you sing that song in a long time,” Tsuzuki said around a mouth full of cherry tart.
“I know. For some reason it just popped into my head.”
“You really should sing more often, you know. You've always had a beautiful voice,” Tsuzuki said after swallowing the food. “How does that song go again?”
“If all the people lived as one, as if they were a song. A singing out of light . . .”
“Providing music for the stars to go dancing circles in the night,” Tsukasa sang softly.
He only realized he was standing when he was halfway out the door of the tea shop with his friends calling after him. Some part of him knew they had all risen and were starting to follow him. It didn't matter. What mattered was that he knew the song, knew the person singing, knew she would have answers to so many of his questions about himself. He locked on to the energy signature and started to run.
“I remember now. Domina-sama, keep singing. I hear you.”
