To Touch the Light
Chapter 1
He had come here many times since he had first found her to see this fragile human in her unnatural state of repose. She was a rare beauty, he found her undeniably attractive. With waves of bright golden hair, ruby lips and the serenely peaceful face of an angel, the memory of her silent beauty always stayed with him long after he left the tower where she was sleeping. She was lying in bed atop the covers, but she was fully dressed in an exquisite formal ball gown of heavily brocaded violet silk that was embroidered and trimmed by a fortune in glittering gold thread. A rich and heavy velvet throw covered her only to her waist but she didn't seem cold.
It wasn't often that Sephiroth found himself in the presence of a human female that had the power to truly attract him anymore- after all, since he had learned that he wasn't really human at all, at least he understood why he had never fallen in love with one before- not even when he was younger. Physically he found them compatible, of course but they were much too fragile to handle his strength or his endurance anyway. He knew this delicate beauty would be no different from the others- and yet, he had no interest in leaving right away…
He had found her here completely by accident but he kept returning to her with what was becoming disturbing and almost monotonously awkward regularity. He had been exploring Maleficent's vast but ruined fortress to raid the libraries and read the books there. In the right hands, magic was a source of limitless power and he was a man of limitless ambition, so the combination was only natural. He had always found magic to be a fascinating subject and the tomes in her collection were books of greater power than anything he had come across in any of the other worlds he and Cloud had visited. After he had finished reading the last book, in Maleficent's main library he had set about exploring the rest of her rotting castle, looking for more books- and in his search he had indeed discovered more rooms with shelves containing magical knowledge- but he had also discovered her.
He doubted that his rival knew that he was studying magic on these world hoping visits. Cloud let him do as he pleased on this particular world without attempting to interfere; apparently he had started to take it for granted that he wasn't hurting anyone here so Cloud had taken to hanging out in the Red Dragon Tavern which was located in a village some 15 miles away to the east- as usual that was his present location too…
That was perfectly fine with him- Sephiroth was a bit embarrassed to admit it, but he really didn't want Cloud to join him in here and ask him what he was doing at this moment...
Although he intimidated them, at least a few of the locals on every world that the two of them had visited unfailingly approached Cloud with various tidbits of the local gossip. Cloud was careful to remain neutral in these visits to other worlds but it didn't seem to bother the younger warrior that everywhere he went there were people who instinctively saw the strength and fighting spirit that Cloud always tried to hide even from himself… This world was no different; everyone here was deeply worried about their kidnapped princess after the death of her betrothed… He knew from what Cloud had been told that she was rumored to be held prisoner somewhere in Maleficent's crumbling castle, but Sephiroth had never considered that he should find her. He had assumed she would be down in the dungeons- so he had avoided them purposely until after he had already found her up here.
He hadn't been with anyone intimately since he had used his powers to get out of the Underworld when Hades released Cloud. Neither had Cloud for that matter- physically at least. Sephiroth had tried numerous times to use killing Tifa to hurt Cloud, but the girl was simply too stubborn to die and stay dead. His nemesis had been in love with the dark haired, brown eyed brat for most of his existence actually, but his young rival was proving to be annoyingly adept at physically avoiding her since he had come back to life. It would be a waste of time to hurt the girl if Cloud wasn't around to see it, so he was just going to have to keep killing the rest of Cloud's friends- once Tifa was the last one, his rival would have no choice but to stop dodging her stubborn attempts at finding him.
He knew perfectly well that there were ways around the barrier of his rival physically leaving the worlds she followed them to- for example, when Tifa was sleeping Cloud used his Ki to visit her dreams through meditation… This power he had discovered was actually quite ingenious- further proof that his rival was growing ever more powerful- and clever. In the darkness of his heart Sephiroth knew that his nemesis was so passionately drawn to the girl that even though he wanted more than anything to protect her from him, Cloud could not completely avoid her.
Sephiroth had never attacked the lovers while they were doing anything… intimate. To resort to that sort of cowardice- even in a dream would go against what little was left of his honor. He had no desire to take advantage of such a distraction- though he had already had the opportunity to do so before in the physical realm while they had both been still alive actually...
His consciousness had happened upon the pair of them entering the Northern Caves. The two lovers had been separated by what else but an avalanche from the rest of their friends and had apparently decided to take a break from their silly quest which was to try and destroy him. The distraction should have given him the perfect opportunity to kill Cloud. The two lovers were completely lost in their intimate kissing and he had been dreadfully bored waiting for something to happen, but he'd chosen not to draw attention to himself or even take control of his puppet and make him get back to what the two of them were supposed to have been doing.
He hadn't even considered interfering because their passionate love was something out of a fairytale- so intense that Cloud made making love to her up against the glittering wall of that ice cave look like the most romantic and natural setting in the world for such a tryst. Tifa was a beautiful, sensual woman and she not only loved Cloud, but it was made crystal clear that she trusted him completely- something else Sephiroth found interesting but had never really experienced before…
Normal people weren't typically foolish enough to trust him- even before he had awakened to his true purpose at Nibelheim; Sephiroth had always known he was different from other people... Even when he had been a hero, revered and admired by their entire world for having lead Shinra's forces to a swift and decisive victory in the war with Wutai, people still feared getting close to him instinctively. Even the boldest women he had ever taken as his pervious lovers went out of their way to avoid drawing his anger- which annoyed him greatly both because he had once been a man of honor and because hurting his bedmates was detrimental to their continued interest in sleeping with him.
It was a universally acknowledged but completely unspoken part of `guy etiquette' that he should not interfere the next time either if Cloud would ever let Tifa catch him and get… distracted like that again. Not only had Sephiroth found the whole thing highly amusing, but it had served to show him that his assessment of Cloud as just another mindless remnant when Sephiroth wasn't directly controlling him was wrong.
To this day, Cloud was still a useful puppet, because he didn't understand what had been done to him exactly so he didn't know how to counter it but Cloud was every bit as unique as Sephiroth knew himself to be. Unlike the other experiments, Cloud did still have his human consciousness and all of his emotions were completely his own.
Well, of course he's different. Sephiroth purred to himself. That only made sense; Cloud is myyounger brother, after all.
Sephiroth had to admit he could finally appreciate a little of the intensity of Cloud's desire to be close to Tifa… He looked down quietly, at the exquisitely beautiful young woman that lay in bed asleep before him. Though she was peacefully resting and blissfully unaware of his presence, he sensed there was something about her that suggested some sort of power lay dormant within her.
The chamber in which she was held had elegance about it too that was very out of place in this ruined castle. She was surrounded in this large, grandly appointed room by beautiful art and furniture, luxurious tapestries, and other trappings of royalty. The bedspread she was lying on and the curtains over her oversized bed were a matched set, down stuffed and richly embroidered in Maleficent's signature black and violet. The rest of the room wore an unmistakable coating of dust, but the bed itself was completely untouched by time and its lone occupant remained innocently unaware of her long imprisonment.
Humans didn't typically sleep more than 8 hours at a time- and her Ki was low, but steady indicating she was in good health, her skin was warm and smooth, and radiant, her breathing was silent, steady and even. He had never seen her awake though- not once, even though he had visited this chamber at all hours of the day and night since he had accidentally discovered her here. The door to the large tower room was locked and strongly barred from both the inside and the outside, but it hadn't ever stopped him, because he'd simply floated up to the balcony and entered through the heavy velvet curtains there when he had discovered that he could not teleport into the room.
The suspicion that she was being held prisoner was also illustrated by the fact that he had never seen food or water left for her. She would have died from hunger or thirst months ago if she was not under some kind of a spell- or a curse… It seemed she didn't even dream for no expression ever crossed her lovely face, which made it seem almost cruel- that Maleficent could keep such a chokehold on the reins of her freedom.
It had even occurred to him a few times that maybe she wasn't even really there at all. Maleficent was a consummate artist with magic. She could have easily set this up as of some kind of a trap for the unwary- yet there was a warm and fragile Ki emanating from the sleeping girl that told him she was indeed very real. Besides, the room itself was elegant and carefully arranged as one would do if they were creating a memorial of some kind. From anywhere in the room there was no way to miss her lying there and nothing else about the room seemed strange to his Ki other than the enchantment that had kept him from teleporting inside it. The only real magic active in the room itself was the spell that kept her motionless and silently sleeping.
But why did he come here to visit her? Why did he look at her endlessly without ever touching her? Why did he wonder what color those large, serenely closed eyes were without ever trying to find out? It didn't seem logical that he was here, thinking about it at all, but he did feel something when he looked at her.
During his many hours of studying Maleficent's vast libraries he had come across the spell that was likely to be the source of her unnatural slumber. It was written that to awaken, she needed love's first kiss; nothing else would be able to release her from the powerful enchantment… Was that why he visited her here? Was it because he wanted to try to awaken her?
Numerous times he had talked himself out of disturbing her immortal sleep by reminding himself that it just wasn't possible for him to be in love with a woman that he had never even met in passing so even if he kissed her she would remain asleep... But the more often he came here to see her, the harder it became to leave her this way.
He sighed he supposed it was pointless to keep trying to deny that some part of him wanted to wake her and free her from the intangible, invisible cage- but why? Was it just to see the poor creature freed- or was it something more complicated and far less innocent? If he did awaken her what would he do with the girl?
She was young and innocent- he supposed the fact that she was everything he wasn't, helped answer the question of why he was so interested in the helpless beauty. Yes, she was pure and completely free of the darkness that had ruled his heart for so long. He was standing so close to her that he could actually feel the purity of her mind and heart radiating outward from her bright spirit. He knew he was pure too- but evil didn't count in this instance so did he really want to defile such a noble and beautiful creature with his darkness?
Truthfully he could have said no- again, there was a part of him that remembered what it was like to be a hero. That part of him had long been silent in the face of his many dark deeds, but at this moment it wanted him to leave her alone. He knew he could never again play the role of hero; it was too much to hope for that he might free her from the spell and then take her far away to some other kingdom or world where Maleficent would never find her. Even the noblest part of him knew that he was too corrupted by his own dark heart to ever aid her- or anyone else without there being an ulterior motive…
To thwart the plans of the Dark Mage who had imprisoned her here was not a good enough reason alone for him to disturb her captive. He had no interest in Kingdom Hearts at all. He was learning to break Maleficent's control over her minions, the heartless because that was simply the easiest way to keep them out of his world- by asserting himself as someone they would instinctively fear more than the dark mage, they would not dare enter his world and try to destroy it again. He had his own plans for Gaia- and Midgar in particular.
He had never thought of himself as a particularly perverted man, after all he never even considered letting his body's animal reactions to the beauty of any woman influence his actions so much until he had found her… but he found her beauty as well as her innocence attractive. Princesses were notoriously spoiled, vile screeching little harpies with no patience that had to have their own way and be catered to hand and foot, but at least at this moment, this particular princess was beautiful, quietly majestic and peacefully serene… all of which he found completely intoxicating right now.
He wanted to taste her sweet lips and then watch her open her eyes and finally find out what color they were…
Unfortunately, his dark side was strong and he knew what he wanted from her. If he did kiss her and if she did awaken, he had every intention of seducing her immediately. He would make love to her endlessly, as much to sate his desire for physical release as to see what sort of an effect giving the girl her long denied freedom would have on her and the radiant light that burned so brightly within her. Seduction still came quite naturally to him, he had everything women liked- he was handsome, intelligent, perceptive and witty, so human females always made easy prey when he was bored and wanted physical release. Unfortunately they were typically so easily seduced that he usually got bored with them quickly.
Still, Sephiroth knew that at the moment he wasn't capable of actually kissing her- he had summoned the image of his previous body- but it was formed out of pure energy- not flesh and bone and technically it wasn't even his energy- it was Cloud's. He was certain that to kiss her in this form would not awaken her because even though he could touch her with this body he would not actually feel anything. He knew desire, pain and pleasure because he remembered what they were supposed to feel like but in this body he couldn't experience any of them in his present form. How ironic that his will was strong enough to take raw dark Ki and shape it into a physical body that had devastating destructive power and agility but he could not do something as simple as feel the rain on his skin or taste the sweet honey of his lover's ecstasy.
This setback was only temporary, though. Back in his own world, he was using Jenova's physical remains and vast amounts of her dark energy as well as the power of her subconscious mind within the lifestream to create a body of his own. Once the new brood of his spirit clones was strong enough to sense Cloud on their own, and fight independent of his encouragement, he would be going home to take control of the strongest remnant and destroy Vincent.
At that point Cloud's only remaining allies against him would be in the world called Radiant Garden. If Cloud and his friends thought they could hide the Cetra girl, Aerith from him by keeping her there, they would soon find that they were sadly mistaken… He already knew of her change of address from the town to the castle there and the fact that she had moved because she was now sleeping with Leon who was a native of that world.
Leon was a curiosity that actually reminded him of Cloud. Though the two young warriors looked different, it was uncanny that both of them had powerful animal totem spirits and even the first time the two had met, they seemed to recognize each other as much as rivals as they were friends. This was odd because they'd met on truly neutral ground with nothing at stake because the Olympus tournaments had not started or even been announced at that time until several days later… The native of Radiant Garden exhibited far greater skill and power in sword play than any normal human that Sephiroth had ever encountered. He knew that even though it had been at least five years since Leon had been credited with saving his home world, from the onslaught of some evil sorceress queen that he was still at least as strong as that idiot Xemnas. He had not decided to challenge the wielder of the Gunblade for fun though simply because Leon was still no match for anyone that had been infused with Jenova cells.
Sephiroth had no doubt that Leon was taking Cloud's place as Aerith's bodyguard because he was her lover, but then again, at least the darling girl was consistent and it didn't matter anyway. Sephiroth had already concluded a long time ago that the last female ancient had rather dubious tastes in men- and bodyguards after all, not only had she chosen to make Cloud her bodyguard- but she had actually tried for a while to come between Cloud and Tifa.
He supposed he would never completely understand Cloud's obsession with Tifa but even death had not been enough to separate their hearts. The lovers' minds and their spirits were still united in a way that he simply could not explain. This bond was so powerful that there were times when even he could feel it occasionally when the two love birds were thinking of each other- sometimes this was true when both of them were awake.
Never the less, whatever his interest in this golden beauty, he was getting tired of talking himself out of disturbing her immortal slumber when time after time he kept returning to visit her here… So, without thinking about why he was doing it- or the possible consequences of his reckless curiosity, he leaned down and whispered in the ear of the sleeping girl with a throaty purr. “I'll be back for you, my princess... dream of me- always.”
Author's Notes:Thanks!!!! This is to the two very special old buddies of mine that e-mailed me and asked to see Sephiroth and Aurora get together `on camera' as it were… Dark Nobility and TrueBlue9, you know I love ya!!! Thanks for sticking with me, girls, even though I'm not writing DBZ anymore!!!!
I wasn't sure whether or not to have this appear in the main story, but I decided against it because Sephiroth is up to his eyeballs in his own interests- most of which is simply trying to entertain himself while he waits for Kadaj to get strong enough to combine spirits with him so that he can be mortal again and finally settle things once and for all with Cloud.
He's so bored that he doesn't mind his erratic, non linear thoughts and the half random order in which they were occurring… Anyone who played FFVII knows that this man is truly nuts, but he's allowed Cloud to stand up to him for so long that I don't think his sense of honor is totally dead- I think he just misplaces it occasionally… I don't think he's aware of it, but in this story he's sensing that he's changing as he waits for his revenge and I think he is drawn to our fair princess because I think some part of him wants to hold onto what is left of his honor that was his light for so long. Seriously, I think that he is hovering rather dangerously close to leaving the Abberant evil alignment (defined by the Palladium role-playing system) as honorable evil and is now leaning toward Diabolic evil- which is what most people think of as true evil… For those of you who have no idea what I am talking about I will post Palladium's definition of the true evil alignments and the parameters that define them as soon as I figure out where I put my Rifts book this time… LOL
Anyway, this story will henceforth be written almost completely from Aurora's perspective because it isn't easy to get into the head of someone as evil and self centered as Sephiroth. It has taken me over 6 months to work this chapter into something I finally feel half way comfortable with posting…
Don't be shy, please REVIEW!!!!! ^_^
