-Chapter 5-

If Riku's mother's mother's husband was having second thoughts about
what he was about to do, they were erased as soon as he saw Sora on
top of his son.

He had slipped out of bed during the night and headed over to the
island where Sora and Riku were lying amidst the surf, a piece of
paopu fruit flavoring a very passionate kiss.

Knowing he could not take them both on at the same time, he waited
for them to finish.

Finally, Riku lie sated beneath Sora, who kissed him tenderly before
Riku got to his feet. "You coming to bed?" he asked.

"In a bit," Sora promised. "I love you."

Riku kissed him in reply, then made his way over to the paopu tree.
Climbing up to his old favorite spot, he soon fell asleep. He did not
hear his mother's husband walk up to the tree. Nor did he hear the
sudden crackling noise as a lit match ignited the torch that the
older man now held against the trunk of the tree.

Sora ran up just as the tree blazed into a full inferno.

"RIKU!" he screamed as both Riku and the tree were reduced
to ashes.

"Why?" He demanded, glaring at Riku's father.

"He brought disgrace to our family."

"He...what?!" Riku blinked as he made his way over to his mother's
husband, "After he saved the world hundreds of times over? The
young man whose heart was strong enough to plunge into the Darkness
and come out whole! You're dare call him a disgrace?" He grabbed the
torch and cast it into the sea. "You owe him an apology."

"I saw the fire," Yamiki said as he ran up. "Where's father?

"That fire was set by your grandmother's husband, while Riku was
sleeping in the tree."

With a cry of rage, Yamiki ran toward Riku's mother's husband,
shoving him over the edge of the islet and into the dark water below.

A cloaked figure dove in after him, pulling him to the shore where
the two men sat panting.

"I don't know who the fuck you are, old man, but, I'd like it if you
wouldn't interfere with our family issues."

The silver-haired man slapped him across the face.

"You know, ever since I got home, you've done nothing but insult me.
I would've thought saving the world would at least have earned me the
end of your verbal abuse, even if it didn't earn me an ocassional
compliment."

"Earned you?" Riku's mother's husband demanded. "Sir, I don't even
know you!"

"Don't you, father?" Riku inquired as Sora and Yamiki reached them.

"You're..." Sora began, then he hugged Riku.

"Hmph. My son's body isn't even in the grave and already you're
groping your new lover."

Riku rolled his eyes. "I am Riku, you idiot! You destroyed my other
body. Forced me back into this form. Forced me back into Darkness.
Look closely, father. See what your hatred hath wrought."

He cast the cloak aside as he turned, and Sora saw that Riku had
not taken on the form of Xehanort's heartless. He had, instead, taken
on Xehanort's human appearance.

Riku's mother's husband stared at him for a moment, then he turned
his long black ponytail toward them and walked away.

Selphie and Kairi had reached the dock just as the fire went out.

"You see," Selphie told her girlfriend, "Sora's got it all under
control. Let's go back inside. I'm tired."

"That was the paopu tree! I know it!" Kairi exclaimed, "Selphie! We
have to go and make sure they're all right!"

"Oh, you're right," Selphie sighed as they got into their boat and
made their way over to the island.

They weren't far from the shore when the storm was suddenly upon them.

"What the hell are those?" Selphie pointed at the creatures that were
suddenly surrounding them.

"Heartless." Kairi told her, a keyblade appearing in her hand.
Steeling herself, she struck to defend herself and Selphie. Although
she didn't have as much experience as Sora or Riku, she was able to
fight off most of the Heartless.

She was charging the boss of that particular group when it hurled a
sleep spell at her, catching her as she fell unconsious, then turning
to scoop up Selphie before

Kairi woken just as they were flying over the spot where the paopu
tree had been. Summoning her keyblade once more. She whispered a
silent apology, then drove the weapon into the boss's heart.

Defeated, the creature's body vanished. Moments later, Kairi and
Selphie hit the beach with loud thud! Kairi drew two potions from the
front pocket of her keyblader suit and cast them on herself and her
girlfriend as Sora, Riku, and Yamiki joined them.

"Do you still want me, Sora?" Riku asked. "This is what I am now. I
can't ever get my old form back again."

"I told you before, Riku," Sora reminded him, sitting in the sand and
motioning for Riku to join him. "what you look like doesn't matter.
You're still my Riku, no matter what."

Selphie stared. "That's Riku?"

Kairi nodded. "He must've been caught in the fire."

Riku finally sat down next to Sora.

Sora drew Riku into a protective embrace, and kissed him, softly.

"People will talk," Riku told him. "They'll say you ditched me for
some old man. I'll be called a cradle-robber, and I'm only a year
older than you."

"Well, we'll have to fix that," Sora decided, standing up and walking
a few feet away.

"I can't regain my old form," Riku pointed out. Then, he realized
what Sora was planning to do. "No. Sora. I can't ask you to do that
for me."

"I'll do whatever it takes to stay with you," Sora vowed as he cast a
flare spell upon himself.

Riku screamed in anguish, and began to cry. Sora wouldn't be coming
back. He had no alternate form to take.

He was sobbing, inconsolably, when he felt a pair of strong, tender
arms encircle him. He allowed them to pull him up to his feet, then
turned and stared. "Ansem. But, how...?"

The man who resembled Ansem smiled, and Riku realized who he really
was.

"Sora!" He laughed, tackling Sora's new body and covering him with a
dozen very relieved kisses.

"Hey," Kairi called to them. "Can you two gentlemen hold off on all
the kissing for now? Selphie and I just got attacked on the way out
here."

"I suspect that whomever sent the creature was the same person who
tried to kill me."

"Your stepfather?!" Sora exclaimed.

Riku nodded. "A disgrace to the scientific community. We have to find
out what my dear old stepfather is up to. And I don't think the
answers are here. Come, let's go see the King."

"Right," Kairi agreed. "You coming, Selphie? Yamiki?"

Yamiki nodded.

"Wouldn't miss it for the world." Selphie agreed.
