-Chapter 09-

King Mickey stood in the middle of the living room in Sora's
mother's house. He had come to a conclusion the previous night
about how to deal with Riku's continued absence.

"I know you're worried about Sora, ma'am," he told his hostess.
"But I can assure you, he's a very brave and strong young man.
In fact, I'm told that Zeus himself thinks he's got all the
qualifications of a hero."

"I've heard," Sora's mother smiled. "But even heroes can be bested."
She turned to Sora. "You yourself said that Hercules himself was
almost beaten by that fellow, what was his name? Aaron?"

"Auron," Sora replied.

Sora's mother gave a nod. "Right. And from the sound of things, this
Auron fellow was fighting with a broken arm?"

Sora nodded in reply.

"I have confidence in Sora," King Mickey told Sora's mother. "I'm
sure he'll be able to find Riku and..."

"No," Riku's mother said, abruptly.

They all turned to her.

"Your majesty, Sora. I've given it some thought, and even though this
breaks my heart, I don't want Sora to look for Riku."

"Why not?" Sora asked. "Why shouldn't I look for Riku?"

"Because he's not what he seems to be." Riku's mother explained. "I
found Riku a few days before you met him, Sora. Before he and I moved
to this town. A few months later, as you recall, I married a young lab
technician, and he became Riku's surrogate father."

"What do you mean you found him?" Sora asked.

"Well, perhaps found isn't quite the right term, since he actually
materialized out of thin air in front of me. Since I had been crying
over how badly I'd always wanted a son, I figured that he was the
answer to my prayer and I adopted him."

King Mickey raised his staff. "Ansem the Wise!"

Ansem's spirit appeared before them, a calm but troubled look in his
eyes. "Your majesty. What can I help you with?"

"Tell me, what would happen if somehow a Nobody was given a heart?"

"Only a Nobody as strong as those in Organization XIII could ever
hope to survive such a thing," Ansem told them. "and they've been
eliminated. Xemnas was the last one. However, to answer your
question, a Nobody with any portion of a heart, even half of one,
would be indistinguishable from a normal person. You wouldn't be able
to tell them apart unless you could see into their dreams."

King Mickey considered this. "I see. That just leaves one more
question. Whose Nobody is Riku?"

Sora was floored by this. "What do you mean whose Nobody?! Riku can't
be a Nobody! He loves me! I know he does."

"Re is able to love you because he has somehow retained a portion of
the heart that belonged to the man whose Nobody he became." the King
explained.

"Even though Riku is most likely a Nobody, his ability to love makes
him worthy of going after."

Riku's mother shook her head. "It might be better if he died. I know
it's a terrible thing to say about a young man I love. But if he were
to..." she broke down.

Sora hugged her briefly.

"Forget about Riku, Sora," she said as she pushed him away and walked
out the door.

"She doesn't mean that," Sora's mother explained. "She's just afraid
that something might have happened to him."

"I know," Sora told her. "That's why I have to go and find him."

Sora's mother nodded. "You behave the King, young man."

Sora hugged her. "I will," he promised, trading one more hug with
his mother before departing with the King.
