Dawn and Darkness On Destiny Island

-Chapter Three-

Riku's mother looked up from her sewing as her son walked
into the house.

"Sorry I'm late," he apologized, "I fell asleep under the paopu
tree last night."

His mother, who had already been visitted by Namine smiled.
"Namine already told me everything," she beamed.
"Congratulations, Riku. I'm very happy for you."

The worlds hadn't only revived Namine. Another nobody had
also been brought back from oblivion.

Axel stared in wonder at the world he had been thrust into. New
buildings, lights, and music surrounded him. And within himself
he could feel a heart beating with pleasure at the music as it
played on into the night.

He smiled, checked his pocket, and found a large sum of cash
there. Surprised, he wondered who had put it there.

"Use it wisely," the King told him. "There's enough there to help
you if you buy the right things."

"Have you heard?" Selphie asked as she caught up with Sora, Kairi,
Riku and Namine. "There's a new fish and chips restaurant in town.
It just opened."

"Why don't we stop there for lunch?" Riku suggested. "My treat."

"Okay," Sora agreed.

Namine and Kairi both nodded in agreement.

The four of them, plus Selphie, walked down to the new restaurant
together. As they arrived, Sora read the sign over the front door:

HEART AND SOLE

"Cute name," he remarked.

"Clever," Riku agreed.

They walked in and sat at a free booth with a nice view of the parking
lot.

A waiter approached their table with menus and water.

"This place is nice," Namine remarked.

"Yeah," Kairi agreed. "I wonder who the owner is."

"Whoever he is, he must have a good sense of romance," Selphie
smiled. "All the candles look like paopu fruit, and the music is so
beautiful."

They ordered five plates of fish and chips, a soda and two paopu
drinks that were shared by Sora and Kairi and Riku and Namine.

They were talking after dinner and wondering if they should order
dessert when a shadow fell across the table.

"I hope you were happy with the service."

Sora looked up to say he was, but didn't because he forgot how his
mouth worked.

Eventually, he remembered. "Axel?!"

"In the flesh," Axel nodded. "If you want, I'll bring you some dessert
and we can chat for a bit."

"What've you got?" Riku asked.

Axel ran off the list and they each ordered something.

"So, why did you come back?" Sora asked. "It wasn't just to run a
fish and chips joint."

"Seems as good a place as any to start," Axel shrugged.

Axel watched as Namine excused herself and headed for the
restroom. "Excuse me," he said, shortly afterward. "I'll be right
back with the desserts."

Axel waited for Namine to emerge from the ladies' room. "What's
wrong?" he asked when she did.

"I was afraid you'd mention how we knew each other," Namine
replied. "That would destroy Riku if he found out. He believes he
and I were childhood sweethearts. I gave him that memory when
Sora broke his heart."

"Why?" Axel asked.

"Yes," Riku added, looking hurt, "why?"

Namine turned to face him, her face white as a ghost. She reached
out and brushed a tear from Riku's face. "Because I love you," she
told him.

"Who did I love before you messed with my head?" Riku asked.

"Please don't ask me that," Namine begged.

"I just did."

"The answer would only break your heart," Namine warned.

"Tell me," Riku demanded. "Who did I love?"

Namine looked at the ground. "Sora."

Riku stared at her. "I was in love with Sora?"

Namine nodded. "You turned on Kairi and tried to kill yourself
because of their engagement. The King agreed that altering your
memory was the best thing to do considering the circumstances."

"Namine," Riku began.

"It's okay," Namine wept. "I understand."

"Thank you," Riku finished, as he kissed her.
