Dawn and Darkness On Destiny Island
-Chapter Five-
"Riku?" Kairi asked as she, Sora, and Namine stood by
their friend's bedside in the hospital.
"We were talking, and he just collapsed," Namine told
them.
A doctor walked in and placed a chart at the foot of the bed.
"How is he?" Namine asked.
"He's in a coma," the doctor replied. "We've run several tests,
but so far we don't know what's causing it."
Namine and the rest of the group remained at Riku's bedside
until visitting hours were up. Then they left, Namine pausing
briefly to gently kiss Riku.

"He must be under some form of psychic assault," Namine
suggested the next day as she and the others had lunch at
Axel's restaurant. "I'll go in and find out."
"No," Sora replied. "It's too dangerous. If something is attacking
him, you wouldn't stand a chance against it."
"We can't just leave him like that!" Namine protested.
"I'll go," Axel told them.
Sora nodded in agreement.

Axel stood at Riku's bedside along with Namine. He closed his
eyes for a moment and let his mind drift until it found Riku's.
Xehanort was still on top of Riku, not letting up on his assault.
Laughing in triumph as Riku's inner self lay beneath him in
catatonic shock.
Axel drew his weapon and waited for the right moment. Then, as
Xehanort reared up to increase the brutality of his attack, Axel
lashed out and cut off his head.
Axel watched as Xehanort's decapitated body disintegrated back
into oblivion. Then he took off his cloak and covered Riku with it.
"Shh..." he said, gently. "Namine will be here soon."

Axel opened his eyes and looked at Namine.
"It's safe for you to go in now," he told her. "I defeated the one
who was attacking him. But only you can bring his inner self
out of it's current state."
Namine nodded. "What happened to him?"
"He suffered a brutal psychic assault from Xehanort," Axel
explained.
"How bad?" Namine wanted to know.
"Xehanort raped him," Axel replied, sadly. "His inner self went
into shock as a result of the attack. That's why he was in a coma."
A mixture of sadness and anger was visible on Namine's face.
"I'm going in."

Namine's mind found Riku's easily. Her inner being wept as she
knelt beside him and gently stroked his hair.
"Riku," she said, softly, "you can wake up now. Xehanort is gone.
It's all over. Please, wake up."
Riku did not respond. Namine closed her eyes and let herself sink
into the wounded mind of Riku's inner self. There she found him
huddled in a corner, his knees drawn up protectively in front of him.
"Riku," she said, "Xehanort is gone. You're safe now. Please, wake
up."
Riku's innermost self looked up at her and shook his head. "I'm too
ashamed."
"Don't be," Namine replied. "You've got nothing to be ashamed of."
"I should've been strong enough to defeat him," Riku looked downward,
no longer able to meet Namine's gaze.
"Even the strongest warriors are bested sometimes," Namine told him.
"Your mind went into deep shock to protect itself. But the danger has
passed. You're safe now."
Riku's innermost self nodded and uncurled itself as Namine returned to
her place at his bedside.
