Chapter Seven: Try to Understand Me.
Riku walked out of the library, closing the door with a slam and locking it. He didn't really mean to slam it that hard, but he was feeling frustrated as of late. Whenever he tried to read, his mind kept wandering back to the boy with blue eyes and brown hair. Which was Sora of course, but he refused to put a name to the person.
To name it was to know it, and then he'd have to remember that night…
Riku shuddered at the memory, but stubbornly blamed it on being cold. I wonder what Sora's doing right now. He shook his head, despite the fact that it caused his silver hair to brush against his nose and eyes. “I don't need to think about him anymore.” He said, turning to walk home.
Riku still couldn't forget that night though; no matter how much he tried. The look on that man's face as he realized that he was dying would be burned into his memory forever. And to know that Sora, the one that he had come to call his friend, had caused the death of that man and two others was too much for him to bear.
And here I thought we could be more than friends. During the time that Riku had spent with Sora, he had actually started to have feelings for him. But now he wasn't even sure if he still wanted to be with Sora after…that.
“Stay away from me you blood-sucking freak!”
Riku groaned as the memory came back to him. I shouldn't have said that. He sighed softly as he unlocked his door and stepped inside. Sure enough, the message light on his phone was lit up, a sign that someone had left him a message. He pressed the button and he got undressed.
“Riku, it's me Jessie. Listen, I know I've called before but I just want to say I'm sorry and I want you back. Please. It was stupid of me to cheat on you and I only want one more chance to prove my love.”
Riku scoffed at the recording as he pulled a soda out of the fridge. “Riku please call me back I-” the soft, light voice of his ex-girlfriend was cut off by a gruffer sounding one. “Who're you calling? Come back to bed already.” Jessie's voice came back on the phone. “Don't worry, Riku, that's not anyone I promise. Please come back to me.” And then the recording ended.
Riku couldn't believe his ex had the nerve to ask him to come back while she was sleeping with another guy. “I must have been blinded by her jugs.” He mumbled as he walked upstairs. A flash of Sora appeared in his mind's eye and quickly disappeared.
He opened his door and headed straight for the bathroom. “I need some sleep.” He mumbled to himself. Riku turned on the water for the shower and stepped inside.
Unbeknownst to him, Sora had watched all of this from Riku's window. This is going to end up being a habit of mine. Sora thought to himself, wondering how to get in without breaking the glass. “Shame there's no air duct.” I guess there's no way around it then.
He pressed on the window and almost fell forwards. Turns out that Riku had forgotten to lock his window last night, so Sora was able to get in his room without breaking the glass. Sora turned around and closed the door, locking it as quietly as he could. Where is he? It was then that he heard the sound of the shower running.
“Oh.” Not a very intelligent statement, but it worked for him. “Guess I'll wait then.” Sora looked over to see a picture of Riku with some girl he didn't recognize. Who's that? He wondered as he picked up the picture. Riku was smiling and so was the other girl; both of them were hugging.
For some odd reason, that made Sora kind of sad. He set the picture down and jumped as he heard, “What are you doing here?” Sora turned around to see Riku…in only a towel. For a moment he was at a loss for words, his eyes traveling from Riku's wet hair to the towel around his waist. “Well?” Riku said. Sora could recognize the annoyed tone in his voice.
“I…” Why did he come here again? Sora had to tear his eyes away from Riku's half-naked body before answering. “I wanted to explain.” “There's nothing to explain.” Riku said, walking over to Sora. “How did you get in here?” “You left your window unlocked.” Sora mumbled, unable to look into Riku's eyes.
“I thought I locked that thing…” Riku muttered under his breath. “Like I said, there's nothing to explain Sora. So leave.” “But Riku-“ “I said get out.” Sora stood up and looked at Riku, hurt and anger flashing within sky blue orbs. “Why can't you understand me? Why can't you understand how I'm feeling right now? I only wanted to-” “To what? Drink my blood? Didn't you get enough from those three guys in the alley?” Riku's words stung and he knew it.
Sora was silent for a moment but didn't look away this time. “Are you afraid of me Riku?” Riku couldn't answer for a second, surprised Sora would ask something like that. “I-“ “Because I would never drink your blood. You're my friend…or at least I thought you were.” Sora couldn't maintain eye contact any longer and looked at the ground again.
Tears started to form in his eyes and he tried to stop them from falling. Unfortunately, they fell anyway, the bloody droplets falling and staining the carpet. “Do you have any idea how hard it is knowing you're different than everyone else? Knowing that you can't walk around during the day or eat normal food like everyone else? No you don't. You don't understand me. You never did.” Sora said bitterly, the red tears falling faster from his eyes.
“Sora…” Riku whispered. Sora was right; he didn't understand him. He could only think in the human sense. He couldn't think in the same way a vampire thought. Riku wanted to say something, anything, that would make the brunette feel better, but all he could was stand there. Stand there and let his friend pour his heart out to him.
Sora stopped crying and looked back up, a few tears in the corners of his eyes. “Fine Riku. If you want me gone that badly then I'll go. I'll go and you'll never see me again.” Sora turned to leave and suddenly, Riku didn't want him to go. He didn't want the brunette out of his life any more then he wanted to quit his job at the Destiny Library.
Before Sora walked out of the door completely, Riku grabbed his wrist. “Don't go.” He said. It seemed like that was all he could say. “Why should I?” Sora said in that same bitter tone. He was hurting and he just wanted the pain to stop.
Riku wasn't sure why Sora should stay; only knowing that he didn't want him to leave. “I…” what could he say to keep Sora with him? Sora turned back to look at him and Riku did the only thing he could think to do in this situation. He kissed him.
