Labyrinth-The Second Time Around
10 years had passed since that life changing evening. 10 years. She had made decisions,
decisions that would change her way of acting, her way of thinking. She had long ago,
that very night even, put away all her toys and costumes. She stopped imagining in other
worlds and lost fantasies, at first it was out of fear, in the end she just didn't want to think
about it. She also began the difficult task of removing her movie star mother from the
high pedestal she had placed her on. Only about a year ago after taking some courses in
Eastern thought and philosophy did she remove her anger and jealousy towards her
mother, she was even able to remove all negative feelings toward her step-mother. She
had truly come into her own. Now 25 years of age, out of college, living in her personal 1
bedroom apartment across from the cozy little book store and coffee shop. Sitting and
relaxing on her yoga mat did she reflect on how much she had matured and grown. She
was currently and vainly attempting to master the art of meditation, well perhaps not
master, but she was definitely attempting. And failing. 'Clear My Mind' She
concentrated.
"Clear my Mind", She spoke to the walls in frustration.
Slowly she breathed in, then released it within a sigh. Smiling sardonically as the last
rays of the setting sun caressed her face, her emerald eyes twinkling with sudden
awareness. 'I never could clear my mind', She mused.
As the sun descended and the shadows pooled into the room, she lay back against the
mat, watching the ceiling grow darker and darker. Her eyes grew sad. The gentle chime
of her cell phone aroused her from her sorrow, but only for a moment. She gracefully
moved her arm beside her to her cell phone. No one was calling her, it was simply an
alarm reminding her of duties and chores she needed to do. She dropped the phone and
let it fall to the floor with a dull thud.
Sarah was alone.
After her shower she decided to make some dinner it was only six o'clock in the evening
but late fall always gave the impression it was later then it truly was. As she began to
chop up the carrots into her salad, the doorbell rang.
'Who the heck could that be?'
Sarah checked the peep hole through her door. UPS. 'Hmm'.
Sarah opened her door to a weary looking, middle aged brown clad UPS driver. "Hello,
are you Sarah Williams?" He asked.
"Yes I am."
"Sign here please." He handed her the electronic handheld, she scribbled her signature on
the grid. Handhelds never did make her signature look right.
The man handed her a large brown box, it was taped rather crudely on the ends. She shut
the door and placed the box on her dining room table. She decided to leave the box alone
until after she had her dinner. But as she began to indulge in her meal. Curiosity killed
the cat.
She moved her plate aside and tugged at the flaps in order to see the shipping label. It
was form her father. She knew from the address. She grabbed her keys from the other
side of the table and tore through the masking tape. As she opened the box her senses
were quickly accosted by the smells of home. Memories danced across her brain, causing
a momentary lapse in what she was doing. How long had it been since she'd been home?
She moved to California 3 years ago to study Ancient history and Philosophy only
coming back home for brief stays during the holidays. She liked being on her own.
Away from the babysitting and constant attacks regarding her social life, or lack there of.
She sighed. Suddenly brought back to reality she looked down into the box spotting a
white envelope on top of some stuffed animals. It read: Sarah. Her name written by her
fathers hand. She opened the letter:
Dear Sarah,
Rather then call you and ask. I decided to send some of your remaining items you
left in your room. Karen has decided to turn it into a guest bedroom. I figured you
wouldn't mind that. Anyways I love you and hope all is well in the Sunshine State. Toby
misses you and so do we. Call me soon sweetheart.
With Love-
Dad
Sarah smiled. Her father, always so loving. She hadn't missed the "we" part, nor had she
missed his pauses, she could read between the lines. He thought her to be upset that
Karen would change the room she grew up in. The funny thing was, it was quite the
contrary, she was delighted to know that something productive was being done with the
room. Its not like Sarah ever slept in that god awful small bed anymore. She mused to
herself. Gently laying the card on the table she began rummaging through her old stuff.
A lot of it was junk from her vanity, most of her beloved stuffed animals had gone to
Toby. She was about to toss the whole box on her storage closet for a later idea of what
to do with it, but another small box inside with a note on it caught her eye.
This was in your bottom drawer, we never opened it.
Sarah peeled back the weathered tape, most of it crumbled and broke at her fingers. She
gasped as the inside was revealed to her. Carefully she pulled out her old music box with
the dancing angel. Before she could stop it, the doll began to dance and the song played.
She watched the beautiful doll dance in rotation, the music, the only sound in her small
apartment, memories and visions of a ballroom flashed across her mind. Sarah smiled
sadly as she placed her once very real fantasy on the table. She pulled out a few photos of
her mother from reviews and plays and a funny looking hand made tiara she once wore
while acting out her beloved book. The Book! Sarah desperately rummaged to the
bottom, she felt around hurriedly, the soft velvet bag brought apprehension. She pulled
out the black velvet bag. She fumbled with the strings. As she slowly withdrew her hand
the first glimpse of the red could be seen, painfully she pulled the tiny, worn copy of her
most treasured book from its hidden confines. The gold lettering boldy announcing the
title: The Labyrinth.
Soft fingers caressed the letters. Sarah suddenly pulled the book to her chest. A few
stray tears fell from her cheek. As warm as the moment was, Sarah quickly placed
random items back in the box and closed it up. She kept the book and the music box out.
After placing the box in her storage closet outside she decided to place the music box in
her room on her desk next to her computer. The only thing left was the book. She stared
at it for awhile, caring not to open it. Afraid of something reminiscent to Pandora's Box
being opened. But as soon as the thought came to mind she casually laughed it away.
'Ridiculous, it's only a book, besides I don't have anyone to wish away anymore.' She
thought. Sarah placed the book on her night stand, not forgotten, just placed aside for
now. 'Some things need time.'
Sarah got ready for bed.
As she slipped under her covers she looked at the lamp switch to turn it off. She eyed the
book. It taunted her. If a book could do such a thing. If someone had been in the room,
watching, they would have thought a staring match was happening between Sarah and the
book. Sarah sighed in defeat.
"Oh who am I kidding!" She grabbed the book.
As she opened the first page she noticed some writing she never placed there before
herself. It was beautifully written, hand written in a strange cursive no less:
If you should ever need me...
J
Sarah read it over and over again, the words whispering over her lips like a mantra, her
brain frantically attempting to know what it meant. Recapturing memories to help her
suffice an answer. 'I remember Hoggle and the others saying something to that effect?
But I never saw them after that first time?' She conjured. But the "J" threw her off, as did
the intimacy of the message. She carelessly dropped the book and the pages fell open of
their own accord, Sarah looked down.
"...But what no one knew was that the Goblin King had fallen in love with the girl
and had given her certain powers..."
Sarah's eyes widened, "Jareth!!" She gasped!
A loud Pop resulting in the sound of broken glass caused Sarah to scream. The light bulb
in her lamp beside her bed had broken. As she scrambled to clean up the mess she
noticed the glitter that blew across her bed in an unannounced breeze coming from the
window. Her logical thought process was reminding her that she hadn't left any windows
open. As this thought slowly crossed her mind, mingling with the glitter that fluttered
across her vision, her head turned abruptly towards the window. Nothing. Sarah released
a breath she hadn't even known she was holding.
She shook her head and laughed in a whisper. Turning her soft comforter over and
swinging her long naked legs over the bed, she began to walk towards the kitchen when
she froze. Years of martial arts, and quite possibly her yoga classes caused her senses to
go into overdrive.
Sarah was not alone.
And as she peered into the dark hallway pouring into her kitchen and living room she
noticed a darker shadow, it grew closer until it reached the door. As the breeze picked up
into a strong gust of wind the curtains revealed enough moonlight to play across the
shadow. And no longer was this just a shadow, no longer was this a thing, it was a him.
She knew who it was, she just didn't want to admit it.
Truly Curiosity, killed the cat.
