Track 2
Raika High. It was a girls' school originally. The school's trademark was its kendo team which had been dominating all local high school in this area of sports for nearly a decade had not lost a single kendo tournament since their establishment. It was an earth-rattling news when the Board of Education announced that Raika High to merge with Ishida High, an all-male high school, three months back as the boys' school was to be demolished for city re-development. The union of both schools had spawned `Tokyo Raika High School'. It had a week since Kazuma had been attending his new school in Tokyo. He had very few friends for everyone in his class still felt nervous around him as nobody knew what he could be up. As for Motoko, despite the humiliating moments during Kazuma's first day of school, she had maintained her usual cold yet serious looking mask in his presence, as a reminder that she would spare him no mercy if any perverted thoughts from him should arise. She would only speak or reply to him if necessary.
Kazuma was making his way to his class along the corridor when he saw a group of boys surrounding a younger, first year female student who was helplessly trying to shrug them off. The blond haired one was about to confront them but halted when he heard running footsteps from his back. Turning around, it was Motoko wielding her shinai in an offensive stance. “ZANTETSUSEN!!!” she screamed, making a huge cut with her bamboo sword, sending the boys crashing into the walls. “Impressive skill…” Kazuma reviewed upon seeing everything.
“All you alright?” Motoko asked the girl.
“I'm fine. Thank you for getting rid of those guys,” she answered, bowed and ran off, as if she was already late for her lesson.
“You'll be as sorry as them if you try anything perverted here,” the kendo goddess warned Kazuma as she kept her shinai in her shinai bag, walking away coolly as if nothing had happened.
During physical education period, the boys and girls were having basketball and volleyball respectively. Kazuma and his group were sitting courtside, waiting for the losing team to be substituted. Waiting for the current match to end, he spent most of his time looking at Motoko who had been playing strong offense and defense for her team. She seemed to be the driving force behind her team's seven-nil run throughout the whole period.
“Oi, Endou, who are you looking at?” Jin, who was his teammate, asked casually as he noticed Kazuma had been eyeing the girls since his team's last defeat. There was a moment of silence before the blond haired replied.
“Jin, what kind of a person is Motoko?”
Kazuma's question had dragged his teammates' attention from the basketball court to the conversation between himself and Jin. They gathered around the blond head and began the discussion on Motoko as she was one of the hot topics in her class as well as the school.
“Motoko? She's cold, reserved but she's very protective of those she cares about,” Kenji said. “If you make her angry, that will be the end of you.”
“Why?” Kazuma asked.
“From what I know, she is the heir of her family dojo, the Shinmeiryuu. Her fighting style was created during the ancient times to defend against demons,” Jin answered. “Right here, she would unleash her Shinmeiryuu techniques and punish any perverted men without mercy.” Kazuma began to recall Motoko's `Zantetsusen' that she performed against the boys in the morning. It was one of the best attacks he had seen in his life, he felt no threat and was simply amazed instead.
“Really?”
“If you don't believe, try her if you dare!”
“That's why the boys are afraid of her,” Kazuma reasoned. From his observations during his first week, he could see Motoko disliked the opposite gender apparently. That was another equation that he needed to solve. “She seems to dislike men, is that true?” the blond head threw another question to reconfirm himself.
“No doubt! Why she hated men so much is another mystery to us!” Jin exclaimed.
After Kazuma had changed back to his school uniform, he stumbled across Motoko as he was making his way back to class from the changing room. She was still in her gym attire that was soaked by her own sweat. Shades of pink spread across his cheeks when he saw the kendo goddess' shimmering ivory-white legs and her inner wear's outline which formed on her sweaty gym t-shirt. “Hello, Motoko,” Kazuma greeted. “You played well just now.”
“Thank you, Endou,” Motoko answered. Noticing her classmate's face was pink and suspicious-looking, she interrogated him. “Why are you blushing?”
The blond haired one was at a lost of words. If he honestly reminded her of her own eye-catchy attire, she would definitely attack him. “Nothing… Class is going to start soon, get yourself changed quickly,” Kazuma said, looking elsewhere.
“Thank you for reminding me. I hope you're not up to some filthy thoughts.” She ended and headed for the female's changing room.
“She's hot!!!” Kazuma thought of the sweaty kendo goddess in gym uniform, and then boxed himself. “What am I thinking!?”
As the science teacher was explaining the chapter on `Forces and Moments', half of the class was sleeping due to exhaustion from the basketball and volleyball games. Instead of giving a lecturing to the sleepyheads, he saved his breath and moved on with the lesson. Motoko was making notes on her textbook while fighting with herself to stay awake. On the other hand, Kazuma was highlighting the important points and formulas of the chapter.
The cell phone in Kazuma's pocket vibrated. There was a message in his `Inbox'. “Who could it be at this time?” he thought and reached for the device. The blond head opened the incoming message and it read:
`Hideki here, I know you're in school now. But can you meet us at the airport in 1130? Tim Jensen's landing around 1145. See you there!'
When the science lesson ended, it was eleven sharp. Kazuma stuffed his books and stationary into his bag hastily, gaining Motoko's attention, but she could not care less. The journey from the school to Narita Airport was about half an hour. Without much more delay, Kazuma told the class representative that he needed to leave early and rushed off.
Later in early afternoon, everybody was busying completing their mathematics' `Quadratic Equations' problems as the teacher told them they could leave once they have finished. One after another, the students handed in their assignments continuously like a flowing stream and soon, Motoko was the last one left in the class. She had plotted the `Quadratic' graphs using the wrong scales and needed to redo everything. “Finally…” she panted as she completed the last question. Motoko handed her assignment to the teacher and began packing her bag. As she was about to leave, Mr. Sumita recalled the assignments that the science and language teachers had passed to him earlier.
“Motoko, could you come over here for a while?” Mr. Sumita called. The kendo goddess moved over to the teacher's desk as ordered. The mathematics teacher then took out a stack of papers from his suit-case and placed them in front of Motoko. “Could you pass these to Kazuma?” he asked, hands clasped around his mouth. “This is today's homework that he missed during the second half of the day.”
“Must I really do it!?” Motoko exclaimed as she recalled last week's close encounter with Kazuma. Unknowingly, her cheeks began to heat up once again.
“They are due tomorrow, Motoko. As a classmate, aren't you willing to help?”
Left with no choice, Motoko agreed bitterly.
“Motoko, what's with that blushing,” Mr Sumita pointed out, and decided to crack a joke out of it. “Don't tell me you like Kazuma…”
“Rubbish!!! I just feel uncomfortable with him!!!” Unable to contain further more teasing, the kendo goddess ran off like a small girl who had been bullied.
With reference to the address which Mr Sumita had provided on a piece of paper, Motoko boarded the train that would take her to Setagaya-Ku, a residential area in Tokyo. The train ride was slightly rocky and feeling tired, she fell asleep. It was fortunate for her that one of her regular turtle nightmares woke her up a station earlier before her designated one.
“Next Station, Seijogakuen-Mae”
The sky was lightly grey and cloudy over Setagaya-Ku. There could be a downpour in the early evening in Tokyo. Motoko was alienated right away after stepping out of the train station. Her first sight was residential buildings, and they were everywhere no matter where she faced. “How am I going to locate his apartment?” She brainstormed after taking a look at her surroundings. All the while, she had been living in Hinata, a small town which could be farmiliarised easily, and had only visited downtown Tokyo if it was essential and then, she had to deliver her classmate's homework whose apartment was located in Tokyo's second largest ward which was totally foreign to her. To counter the problem, she asked a local female student who had kindly brought her to Kazuma's apartment.
“Damn you Endou! Why must you leave school early today!?” Motoko cursed her fate as she was waiting in the lift which would take her to the eighth storey.
Pressing the doorbell once, Motoko waited patiently for him to open the door. However, there was no respond. She pressed it again. The result was the same as before and she began to feel annoy. The third time was a repitition. She had enough, and had decided if the outcome for her fourth attempt was futile, she would leave. Kazuma exited his bathroom, put on a plain white shirt, underpants and a flowery bermudas over his wet body quickly upon hearing the pneumatic hammer-like ringing doorbell together and the furious knockings and shoutings from his door. Opening his door, he saw his classmate looking very aggravated.
“Motoko!?” Kazuma exclaimed.
“What took you so long to open the door!?”
“I was in the shower. I'm very sorry, Motoko,” the blond haired one asked. “Would you like to come in?”
“No, thank you. I came here to deliver your homework as you were absent in the afternoon,” Motoko replied calmly after cooling herself down as she took out the assignments from her bag and handed them to him. “Here. I must get going now.”
“Thank you, Motoko. It's raining now,” Kazuma stated and a thunder blasted simultaneously. “Would you like to stay here for a while until the rain stops?” He offered. The kendo goddess was taken back as she could not believe it had rained in a sudden.
“Endou, may I borrow your umbrella? I'll return it tomorrow,” Motoko queried as she tried to avoid staying in Kazuma's apartment.
“Sorry. I don't have one?.”
“What about a raincoat?”
“It was stolen when I left it on my bike at town.”
“Argh… Guess I have no choice…”
Kazuma's apartment was small and cosy. It was single roomed, which meant that his bedroom was also his living room. Along with that were a tiny kitchen with a bathroom next to it. Motoko was surprised by his housekeeping. He had maintained his living quarter clean and tidy, just like Keitaro. Beside that, the kendo goddess was captivated by his room's decorations. His walls were filled with his favorite artists: Aerosmith, Motley Crue and Bonnie Pink. There were also an army of Gundam and racing cars models nicely kept in a wooden shelf unit. Motoko spent some time viewing every single piece of them.
“Interested?” Kazuma asked. “You can have one if you want.” The kendo goddess rejected politely. However, what had captured most of her attention were the electric guitars which she had then seen hanging on the wall beside his bed.
While waiting for the rain to cease, Motoko made use of the coffee table and started on her homework after asking for his. On the other hand, Kazuma cast his aside, he decided he would do it during the night and began fixing another Gundam model he had bought the day before. He had also forgotten to serve his classmate with drinks for she had been there for quite sometimes, so he went to the kitchen quickly and returned to the living room with two glasses of fresh milk.
“Have a drink,” the blond haired one offered and took a seat opposite of Motoko.
“Thank you,” the kendo goddess said as she paused her paperwork and took a sip of the drink. “Endou, do you play the electric guitar?”
“Oh yes! I'm the guitarist and back-up vocals for the band called Shade!”
“Shade?” Motoko thought, as it sounded familiar to her. Although she had faint impressions on musical groups, she had heard the band Shade from one of the source of media. “Isn't it the band which was handing out free single cds a few months back?” Motoko recalled.
“Yes! You have a good memory, don't you?” Kazuma praised, but did not receive an answer from the kendo goddess who had resumed on her science homework. There was an era of silence before he decided to apologize for the day's incident. “Erm… Motoko…”
“Yes, Endou?”
“I'm sorry for troubling you to deliver my homework here. Actually, I went to the airport to pick up a rock-specialist from the West, along with my band members. That's why I had to leave early today…”
“It's alright,” Motoko answered blandly.
Unknowingly, Motoko had been staying at Kazuma's house for an hour. She had just finished all her homework while her classmate had just completed assembling his Gundam model. “Endou, may I use your bathroom?” The kendo goddess asked. He smiled in agreement. As she was about to sit down on the toilet bowl, she heard strange noises from one of the pails in front of her. It was made clearer where it came from when the pail at the corner collapsed on its own. A creature with massive plated head, pronounced hook on its beak and armored shell made its way out slowly. “What is this ugly looking creature?” Motoko thought as she visualized it from a distance. Discovering it had a shell on its back, she concluded that it was none other than a turtle. “TURTLE!!!” she screamed. Kazuma heard the unpleasant noise, he stopped repositioning his new Gundam model on the shelf unit and headed for the bathroom quickly. Just then, Motoko barged out madly and crashed onto the imminent blond head.
Heavy panting had stretched across the apartment.
“Ouch…” Kazuma cried and opened his eyes lazily. His face turned pink immediately when he found himself elegantly ending up under Motoko on the floor
“Huh…” the kendo goddess uttered, trying to regain her conscious at the same time. Time had come to a dead stop when both of them were aware of their positions. To be precise, Motoko was just only in a pounced-like posture over him. Silence started to fill up the room when Kazuma's eyes explored her face in detail. Her sharp looking eyes combined her board straight raven hair reminded him how Motoko and Tomoko (his ex-lover) resembled remarkably. Lost in his mixed emotions, Kazuma reached for her cheeks slowly with his trembling hand. “Get your hand off,” Motoko gulped worriedly. “You pervert guitarist…” As the blond head drew her face towards his, her heart was beating hysterically, her energy to put up any resistance began to fade just like the first time she fought Keitaro in Hinatasou. “Endou… Please don't…” The kendo goddess pleaded and was being ignored. She tried to slap him but she could not bear do it. Finally, she surrendered to her own ego. Motoko's conscience woke her up when her lips was about to meet Kazuma's.
“There's no harm to be in loved with someone, Motoko…”
“He's a nice guy to be with, you know?”
“Just give yourself a chance and try to know more about him. You may never know he's the right one for you…”
“Nooooo!!! I can't do this… I'll end up like my sister… Giving up the sword over such things… I have to carry on the Shinmeiryuu!!!”
“You are running away…”
“I'M NOT!!!”
Motoko pushed Kazuma aside and reached for her shinai in a flash.
“ZANGANKEN!!!” The kendo goddess had knocked him unconscious and packed up her stuff quickly. “I'm sorry, Endou!!!” she cried and sprinted off fearfully.
