Demon Rancher chapter 7

Getting what she wants

It has been three months since then. Sheila was anxious to get herself a new demon, since her first one had shown such promise. Koga had won his first three fights easily, never getting hit in any of the battles and knocking out each competitor before the timer ran out. “Hey Vick,” Sheila talks to her twin over the phone, “You wanna come with me to see Mr. Karnab?” on the other line, at Vickie's house, Vickie rolls her eyes. “Yeah I'll come. What are you gonna get?” Sheila grins and Vickie can sense teeth on the other end of the phone. “I'm gonna get what I want.”

Twenty minutes later, both girls are standing at the Toggle Administration desk, asking for Dr. Karnab. Cynthia nods and presses a button on a small black machine next to her. “Dr. Karnab? The Shadow twins are here to see you.” She says into the microphone attached to the black machine. Two minutes later Dr. Karnab walks out of the door where Vickie and Sheila got their first demons. “What can I do for you girls?” he asks.

Sheila steps up to the old man, eyes glittering and grinning widely. “You heard of Koga's reputation, right?” she asks him. Karnab nods in response, “Yes, he's become quite famous hasn't he?” Vickie frowns, “That's only because he's so fast…” she grumbles. “Yeah, well, that's because I trained him well.” Sheila boasts. Vickie humphs, She knows the truth, that wolf was born with hurricane legs! “Anyways, I was thinking that maybe I could get another demon?” Sheila starts, and Karnab frowns. “This isn't about that harpy you saw, is it?” he asks her. Sheila glares at Dr. Karnab, ready to argue “Vickie already has another demon, why can't I have another one too?”

Dr. Karnab holds up his hands in front of Sheila, “I never said that you couldn't get another demon, Sheila. But think about this. Vickie has two demons and all they do is fight with each other. Imagine what would happen to a young harpy and a young wolf demon!” Sheila frowns “It's very hard to imagine when I can't even see what I'm imagining!” she shouts in Karnab's face. Karnab sighs in defeat. “Well if you're sure about this…” “Yes I'm sure!” Dr. Karnab looks Sheila in the eyes, “Then you're in luck.” Karnab nods and turns toward the door leading to the demons. “Our Harpy just had twins yesterday and we have to separate the young from their mother now so they can be accustomed to others.”

“Huh?” both girls say as they follow Dr. Karnab. Karnab turns on a flashlight, “The kids gotta get used to other people.” The twins look at each other, “Ooohhh.” They say in understanding. Dr. Karnab turns to the right and the light shines on the harpy lady with the silver bracelet. She glares at the people staring into her glass cage. “I don't see any babies…” Vickie mumbles. “That's because she is hiding them from us.” Dr. Karnab replies. He motions for the girls to step back as he opens the glass door. He steps inside and pulls out a keychain and points it at the harpy lady. “You know what this is, don't you?” he asks her and the harpy growls while jumping back. “Behave and I won't have to use this.”

“What's he gonna do, hit her with the keychain?” Vickie whispers to Sheila. “Maybe it's one of those flashlight keychains. She doesn't seem to like light…” she whispers back, while looking at the harpy lady's head. Something just moved in her hair… “You're both wrong. This is a taser, and if she doesn't show me where her babies are, she's gonna feel 10,000 volts of electricity!” Sheila's eyes go wide. She'd never seen Dr. Karnab sound so angry! Dr. Karnab steps closer to the harpy and the tip of the taser crackles and blue-white electricity can be seen coming from it.

“Come on Julia, show me you're twins.” Dr. Karnab coaxes, Julia glares at him, then reaches into her hair and pulls out a blond little boy with slightly tanned skin. Little tufts of white feathery down could be seen on his back, between his shoulder blades. Karnab nods and takes the baby from Julia. “This is her first born. Do you want him, Sheila?” Julia glances over at Sheila, and then narrows her eyes at her. Sheila takes a few tentative steps toward Dr. Karnab and the baby harpy. “What's his name?” she asks him. “The caretakers call him Krad. His twin, is somewhere around here…” he says while looking over at Julia. “Where's you're other baby?” he asks, demanding an answer.

Julia looks down at the ground. Karnab flashes the flashlight down a little, and Sheila sees a purple spot mixed in with Julia's long hair on the floor. Dr. Karnab hands the sleeping blond to Vickie and slowly reaches out for Julia's hair. He puts a hand in her hair and slowly pulls out Julia's other baby. It was a boy with deep purple hair and creamy white skin; little balls of black fluffy down were between his shoulder blades. Sheila peers at the purple haired boy in wonder. She never thought that anything could have purple hair! Dr. Karnab places the boy in Sheila's arms, just as the harpy boy was waking up. He looks up at Sheila and she gasps, his eyes were violet!

Julia growls as the purple haired boy reaches his hands up to Sheila's face. Sheila smiles and kisses one of his outstretched palms. “What's his name?” she asks. Dr. Karnab looks at Sheila cooing at the baby and says “His name is Dark.” Sheila looks up at Dr. Karnab, “Why did you name him that?” Karnab smiles, “Its Krad spelled backwards, plus, he has dark hair, wings, and eyes.” Vickie looks down at the blond haired little Angel Harpy and rubs his chin. The baby wakes up and icy blue eyes look back at her. “I wonder who the `bad' twin is.” Vickie asks out loud. Dark coos at Sheila and laughs as she pulls on his finger. “I think the caretakers nick named them the Guardian Angel and the Dark Angel.” Karnab replies.

“Well this Dark Angel is coming home with me!” Sheila exclaims.
