Demon Rancher chapter 9
Wind and Pixie Dust
Two months have past, and Inuyasha had won his own Official Rank match. He had gotten his fight with Juggernaut in the first round and knocked him out. His final match was against a Harpy, who looked like an older version of Dark. A much older and more mature demon than Inuyasha, and proved it by nearly knocking him out with his dive-bomb attacks. After seeing his fight it made Sheila want another monster with wings. Vickie decided that she wanted a wind based demon. Plus, she was tired of seeing boys all the time, so she wanted a girl.
Vickie and Sheila went to the Shrine first so Sheila could get herself a Pixie from her Saucer Stone. Out of it came a Diana, a Pixie mixed with a Dragon. Sheila smiles as her Pixie bows while in the air to her. “I'm gonna name her Angel.” She decides and Angel does a somersault while crying out for joy. Vickie grins as Sheila and Angel walk out, looks at the shrine keeper, and shakes her head. She wasn't ready to raise another monster yet. She didn't want another Garu to die on her again. (She would have had no choice but to get a Garu, since that's the only saucer she has!)
“Well, let's head for the Demon Day Care Center.” Vickie tells Sheila and Angel. The two nod in union and follow Vickie down the winding path to the east of the Shrine. When they get to a black gate, Vickie smiles at the man in a purple D.D.C uniform, he was the one that had told her about the Day Care. Plus, he had gotten her to see Inuyasha and take him to raise before anyone else could. “Hey Vickie, are you back for another demon?” Vickie smiles at Dave and nods her head, “Yeah, but this time I'm looking for something specific.” Dave puts down the clipboard he was holding and opens the gate to let them in. “Something like what?” he asks her.
Vickie crosses her arms and frowns in concentration. “I want it to be a girl, and…” Sheila pokes Vickie in the shoulder, “Something to do with wind?” she reminds her sister. Vickie's eyes light up, “Yeah! I want her to specialize in wind attacks!” Dave nods his head and takes Vickie by the hand, “I think I might have something for you.” Dave takes Vickie to a green building and when he opens the door, they almost get knocked over by a gust of wind.
“What was that?” Sheila asks Dave slowly, sounding a little irritated because her hair was in her face. “A naughty little wind demon named Jin.” Dave growls into the room. The wind dies down and a little boy with wild spiky red hair and a quicksilver grin on his face walks to the doorway. He looked normal enough, if you didn't count the three inch Unicorn Horn in the middle of his unruly hair. Vickie's eyes go wide and Jin waves his hand at her in a hello. “Can I―” Vickie starts, but Sheila elbows her in the ribs, “Can't have him, you wanted a girl. Remember?” Vickie frowns, “But―” she starts, “No. Now go find yourself a female demon.”
Dave frowns at Sheila, “The correct term is `Demoness'.” He says while walking past Jin down the hall. Vickie and Sheila follow him and a few minutes later, they hear crying babies. Vickie looks in through a window and sees different kinds of babies with different color blankets. “The pink blankets are girls and the blue ones are boys.” Dave starts, “The ones with purple mobiles over their heads are born from wind type parents.” Vickie glances at the babies, then looks over at Dave, “But that still doesn't tell me if they are any good. What if I choose one and she's a dud?”
Dave frowns, “A dud?” Sheila rolls her eyes, “What if she can't control wind? Or any other element?” she asks. Dave closes his eyes and thinks, then opens his eyes with a bright idea in his head. “Follow me,” he tells the girls and Vickie looks confused, “Where are we going?” Dave turns his head while still walking down a side section of the hall, “To the real daycare.” Vickie shrugs and continues to follow her adult friend and Sheila takes up the rear position.
Dave leads the girls outside to a grassy area filled with demon toddlers looking from one year old to five. “Hey trio, somebody wants to meet you girls!” Dave calls out, and three demon girls run out from the group of demon playing tag. There was a girl with short blue hair and blue eyes, who looked around six years old, a girl with long blond hair and big brown eyes, who looked to be five, and a girl with medium length black hair and red eyes and had makeup on, who looked about four years old.
“What's up, Dave?” the blue haired girl asks. “Look smart, girls, someone's going to take you home with them!” Dave tells the girls. The blue eyed girl pushes down her slightly wrinkled kimono and straightens her yellow sash. The blond haired girl fluffs out her cream colored dress. The red eyed girl puts a white feather in her hair. Dave smiles and steps to the side of the girls so Vickie and Sheila could see them better. “Now introduce yourselves,” he says.
The blue girl steps forward and bows from the waist like a boy and grins at the girls, “Hi, my name's Hiya. What's yours?” Sheila grins and Vickie waves and the twins introduce themselves. Hiya steps back and lets the blond come forward. “My name is Jae,” she says with a curtsy, then she steps back. The black haired girl doesn't move forward, but waves her hand and says, “I'm Gina.” Vickie grins and waves back at Gina. Sheila looks over at Dave and asks a question that she knew her sister would forget to ask. “How old are these girls?”
Dave grins, “Would you believe me if I told you they were only a few months old?” Sheila and Vickie nod their heads in union. “Yes” they both say together. Dave continues to grin as he tells them how old the girls really were. “Hiya is six months old, Jae is four months old, and Gina is only two months old.” Vickie grins, “So they're only two months apart?” she asks and Dave nods his head. Sheila smiles and grabs Vickie by the arm, “Excuse us for just one minute,” she tells the group.
Sheila drags Vickie away about ten feet and whispers in her ear, “I think you should go for the one who has the least development, Vick,” she tells her sister. “Why are you whispering?” Vickie whispers back. “Because one of those girls has ears like Koga, and you can't see the ears of the other two!” Vickie nods her head, “So I'll pick Gina then.” She says while purposely walking back to the little group. Sheila follows a little bit behind. “I've made up my mind, Dave!” Vickie hollers.
“So who's it going to be?” Dave asks, and the girls look nervous. Vickie grins and hugs Gina, “I pick you, Gina!” she shouts. Gina winces at the loudness in her ears and Vickie grabs her hand. “Alright then, Gina, say good-bye to your friends.” Dave says cheerily. Gina smiles a little and waves her hand at the demons in the area, “Bye.” She says with very little enthusiasm, none of the demons still playing even heard her. Dave leads Vickie, Sheila and Gina back into the building. Vickie turns her head to look at Gina while leading her by the hand, “Why did you say bye like that?” she asks her soon to be new demoness. Gina looks up at Vickie and grins, showing slightly pointed teeth, “Did you think that those demons were my friends?” she asks back. Vickie frowns, “So they weren't your friends?”
Gina shakes her head, “No, we only stuck together because we were the only ones of the same type. And because we were the ones who were never picked.” Vickie stops in her tracks, “How come you girls were never picked?” Gina looks a bit worried, “Hiya is a mix of wind and ice, and everybody always wants one or the other, not both, because those two types leave each other neutral in stat boosts,” Gina begins. “Jae is way too low in defense to be worth training, it's why she wears a dress, to keep her from running too fast and tripping.” “What?” Gina grins, “If she falls even once, she'll knock herself out.” Sheila's eyebrows rise two inches, she had never heard of defense like that!
“What's her defense level, two?” Vickie asks, and Gina raises her index finger up. “One.” She answers. Now it's Vickie's turn to raise her eyebrows. “So how come you haven't been picked?” she asks Gina. Gina sighs, “I'm too young to be worth much. Everybody wants a mature, already super strong demon. So when they hear how old I am, they just pass me by.” Vickie grins, “Well, I didn't!” she exclaims while hugging Gina again. Gina smiles and the girls continue walking down to the end of the hallway, where Dave was waiting for them.
“I've already got the papers ready, they just need your signature.” Dave informs Vickie. Vickie lets go of Gina and takes the papers. While she moves to sit down at a table, Dave notices the look on Gina's face. “Why Gina, you're smiling!” Dave gets really close to Gina's face, “It's a real smile, too!” Gina's smile gets wider, “I'm really going home!” she calls out to everybody in the building. Vickie gets up from her chair and hands Dave the papers. Dave looks through them and rips off the back of the last paper. “This is your copy. That way, if anybody says `That's not your demon,' you have proof that she is yours.”
“YEAH!!” all three of the girls jump in the air and then run out of the daycare center, Angel floating after them as fast as she could.
An hour later, Vickie ends up home with Gina. “Well, this is my Ranch. C'mon, I'll introduce you to some real friends!” Gina grins and runs with her new Mistress towards the barn. The door opens and Inuyasha pokes his head out, sniffing the air. “Vickie's back!” he hollers as he runs out to greet her. Gina freezes when she sees Inu come bounding over to them. Inu takes notice of Gina and changes his direction to her instead. Gina gets scared and waves her hands at Inu in a shooing motion, and spirals of wind come out from the palms of her hands. The solid wind connects with the hanyou in the chest and sends him flying backwards.
“Wow, you really do have wind powers…” Vickie mumbles. Inu growls and glares at Gina, “What'd you do that for?!” he barks while on his butt and Gina narrows her eyes at him, “You scared me!” she shouts at him. Inuyasha stands up and brushes himself off, “I was only comin' to say hi!” he yells at her. Sessho jumps down from the giant oak tree near the barn and slowly walks over to the group. He had seen what this demon could do. Now all he had to do was see why she was here. He did not want to get blown onto his butt!
Gina sees him coming after a minute and starts to raise her hands up again. Sesshomaru stops all movement, then slowly bows from the waist to the little demon girl. After Gina sees that he isn't coming any further, she asks “Who are you?” Inu grins, “I'm―” Sesshomaru is standing in Inu's place in an instant, effectively knocking him over and stopping his words. “I am Sesshomaru.” Sessho says to the wind demoness. Inuyasha gets back up and pushes Sesshomaru to the side, “I'm Inuyasha. Who and what are you?” he demands. Gina sticks her tongue out at Inudai and makes a fist, “I'm Gina, and I'm gonna whip your ass!”
Inuyasha steps back and Vickie grins, then pats Gina on the shoulder. “You're not gonna be whipping anybody's ass until you get some more training in. I saw your attack, it went everywhere.” Gina looks up at Vickie, her pride momentarily hurt, “I can see you've got a lot of power. But power is nothing if you don't have any accuracy.” Vickie tells her wind girl. Gina nods, knowing a good piece of advice when she hears it. Vickie starts for the house. “You guys do some training. Gina, you train in only accuracy for a month. Next month, were going on an adventure!”
