Demon Rancher chapter 10
Tag Team Exploration!

A month had passed, and Gina grew stronger with every training session. Soon, she was at half of Inuyasha's strength, and a quarter of his accuracy. Vickie was pleased to see this and praised Gina often. Gina was pleased as well, but was unhappy about one thing: She couldn't make her wind go in the direction that she wanted. It would always go every which way and tore everything it hit to shreds. That made Inu and Sessho steer clear away from Gina when she trained. Vickie noticed that and was a little upset; she still thought that Gina needed a bit more training, but she had promised everyone that they would go adventuring today.

Vickie frowns, then shakes her head; it was time to call her sister! Vickie dials Sheila's number on the phone and when her sister answers, she asks her if she'd like to come with. “Sure!” Sheila answers, “I need to get Dark some more moves anyway,” she tells her twin. Vickie grins, this was going to be fun! She thinks as she runs outside to tell everybody the news. Inuyasha and Gina were excited, but Sesshomaru wasn't. He wanted to train some more. Vickie lines up her demons and after grabbing her rainbow colored backpack, they're ready to leave.

Ten minutes later, Sheila meets Vickie by her sister's Ranch gates and they head for the Toggle Caves. Sheila goes in first, while holding Dark's hand, followed by Angel and Koga. Then it's Vickie's turn and she takes Gina by the hand and Inuyasha and Sesshomaru follow her into the dark cave. Sheila grins at Vickie, “Race you through the caves!” she says then takes off with her monsters not too far behind. Vickie looks back at her demons and Inuyasha grins; he was going to race with her. Vickie sprints off after her sister with Inu at her side, both of them equally paced and are quickly catching up to Koga.

“Hey, scrawny wolf!” Inu calls after Koga, making him tense up and stop to turn around. “What the heck is your problem, mutt?!” he shouts, his voice echoing through the cave. Inuyasha grins and races past him, “I'm not in last place anymore!” he shouts as he catches up to Angel. Koga growls and is about to race after him, when he almost gets knocked over by Vickie. “See ya, Koga!” she shouts and is soon in step with Inuyasha once more. Koga tries to take off after them, but this time he is knocked over. By Sesshomaru! “Out of the way, wolf!” Koga growls something under his breath and takes off after the group, never noticing the glowing yellow eyes of a monster behind him.

Ten minutes later, after running through the dark and twisting paths of the cave, Sheila, Vickie and their demons end up at the end of the path, which leaded downstairs further into the cave. The demons and Angel stoop over to catch their breath, all except Sesshomaru, who acts like it was a walk in the park. Vickie glances at him from the corner of her eye, his chest rises and falls a fraction to fast than his normal rate, and she grins. “Everybody ready for the next level?” she asks them and gets a groan in answer. “Do we have to run again?” Inuyasha asks her. Vickie shakes her head, “No,” she tells him and Sheila finishes her sentence, “Now it's time for the fighting part!”

A loud eerie howl echoes through the cave and everybody jerks in surprise. “What was that?” Gina asks in horror. Vickie narrows her eyes, “It sounds like a Tiger,” she answers. Inuyasha shakes his head, “I don't know…that sounded more like a wolf to me…” he says while pointedly staring at Koga. Koga glares at him, “maybe it was a dog!” Sheila pounds Koga on the head, making him yelp, “You idiot, our mother raises Tigers, we should know what one sounds like!” Koga is about to say something back, when Dark squeals.

Everybody turns in his direction and get into their fighting stances when they see a green wolf with yellow eyes and a pair of dark green horns on its forehead step out of the shadows. “What is that thing?” Dark asks. “That's a Datonare, a mix of a Tiger and a Zuum.” Vickie replies and glances over at her group. “You guys ready to fight?” she asks and her dog demons nod their heads. Gina falters, “We gotta fight?” she asks, her voice getting shrill from fear. Vickie nods, “Yes, you gotta fight, I can't!” “But I can't hit straight!” She screams, then yells in surprise when the Datonare jumps at her.

Gina ducks and rolls; just getting out of the monster's way. Inuyasha is about to step in the same time that Koga would, but both girls stop their demons. “She has to learn how to fight.” Vickie tells them, and Inu looks on in worry. Vickie glances at the Datonare, he didn't have any moves he could use from so far away, but Gina did! “Now's your chance, Gina!” Gina glances at Vickie with a questioning look. “Use your Whirlwind on him!” Gina nods and takes a look at the Datonare; it was confused at the moment, but that wouldn't last for long. Gina claps her hands (and the sound echoed in the cavern) and twirls with her hands outstretched from her sides, making a dusty wind swirl around her. When she stops spinning and faces the Datonare, her hands are out in front, palms out. A long swirl of wind shoots out from her hands and zigzags towards the Datonare and hits him in the face.

The Datonare recoils from the hit and snaps out of his confusion. He sees who had hit him and lunges forward, closing the large gap between the two. “Koga, get in there!” Sheila shouts and in an instant, Koga is between Gina and the Tiger mix. Just when the green wolf would bite him, Koga uses a Spin Kick on him and knocks out the Datonare. Everybody cheers except Gina, who only sighs in relief. As everybody is congratulating Koga, Gina looks at her hands; they were glowing a strange silver color. Dark is the only one who notices. “Hey! What's goin on with your hands, Gina?” he asks. Vickie looks up and walks over to Gina. “Looks like you learned a new move, Gina.” I wonder what it does, Vickie wonders.

“Let's get going, this is only the first level we're on!” Sheila shouts. Everybody then follows her down the cave stairs to the next level. On the 2nd floor, the cave gets darker. Vickie and Sheila are walking side by side down the smooth rock path with their demons behind them. There was only room enough for a pair to walk here. A few minutes of walking later, the path opens up to a lightened cavern large enough to be a battle arena. Off to the left was a tall stone pillar, to the right was a small cave. Sheila directs her Diana to the pillar and tells her to search it. The Diana floats up the pillar and a few seconds later, pushes down a red treasure chest. “Alright!” Sheila exclaims, and then bends down to open the chest. Inside was a Saucer Stone. “I wonder what monster this could be…” Sheila whispers.

Vickie sees the little cave and thinks to herself, who could possibly fit in there? She looks at her group; Sesshomaru and Inuyasha were way too big. Then she sees Gina looking up at her with her big red eyes. Vickie smiles, “Gina, go check out that cave over there,” she says while pointing at the cave to the right of them. Gina grins and crawls inside the cave. A few seconds later Vickie could hear her voice come from inside. “I found something!” Gina shouts, “Bring it out!” Vickie shouts back. Gina backs out of the cave slowly, and when she fully emerges, there's a white treasure chest in her hands. “Open it up.” Vickie instructs her wind demoness. Gina nods her head and opens the chest. Inside, there's an ornamental black-steel fan with a red line of paint over the white painted inside. Gina flicks her wrist and the fan opens up some more. “It's beautiful…” she says in amazement.

Vickie gets an idea, “You can have it. Now do me another favor.” Gina looks up from the fan at her Mistress. “What?” she asks. “Close the fan and try using your new attack while opening the fan on that rock.” Vickie says while pointing at a rock close to the next open path. Gina nods her head and twirls slowly, then quickly opens up her fan when she faces the rock.
“Dance of Blades!” she shouts and three silver colored wind blades come from the fan and hit the boulder one right after another. After the dust clears, all that's left of the boulder are a few small pebbles. Inuyasha and Koga both stare with their mouths agape. “What power!” Koga exclaims. “She actually hit it!” Inu exclaims. Gina blushes at all of the comments and Vickie gives her a hug. “I knew it!” Vickie shouts. “Knew what?” Gina asks while returning the hug. Vickie moves back and lets Gina go with a smile. “You just needed a focus.” She explains. “A focus? What's that?” Gina asks. “A thing that you can make your attacks go through. You focused your energy into the fan and let it out on your target and look at what happened!” Gina grins, “Cool!” Sheila pats both of them on the shoulder, “Yeah, that's cool, but we still have a long way to go!”

Vickie nods her head and everyone follows her down the path next to the rubble on her right. Sheila walks beside her after a while and they are once again, on a zigzag path. Just when they would get to the next room in the cave, a swarm of bats screech and hit everybody in the face. When the bat cloud clears, a plum colored monster with deep violet marks on its huge ears and body is floating in front of them. The Gitan has two spikes on each ear and on the tip of its long fat tail. It looked almost comical with it's big round eyes; if it weren't for the black pitchfork in its hand.

“Uh-oh…” Vickie mutters under her breath, and the devil monster laughs. Dark narrows his eyes at the Gitan, “I can take this one!” he shouts. Before anyone could stop him, he flaps his wings and headbutts the Gitan in its tummy. The Gitan winces at the contact and counter attacks with its spear. Dark sees it coming and ducks his head, then gives the purple devil two punches to its gut. Vickie looks on in amazement as Dark quickly circles around the Gitan while it's recovering and elbows it in the back. “How old is he again?” Vickie asks Sheila, “Two and a half months,” she replies with a smile. Back up in the air, the Gitan decides to use its tail on Dark. It slaps him in the face and Dark holds his cheek in shock. “Quit holding your face and use your head Dark!” Sheila shouts at him. Dark shakes his head and zooms into the Gitan from the side. The Gitan's eyes swirl and it falls to the ground, completely knocked out.

Everybody cheers as Dark lands (it was a little rough landing) and hugs him. Dark grins and looks at the Gitan he holds out two fingers and yells at him, “BAKA! Did you really think you could beat me?!”
Sheila ruffles Dark's hair, “Yeah, that thing was kinda stupid.” Vickie giggles as she sees Dark's wings glow purple for a second. Dark doesn't notice and asks what's wrong. “Nothing, you just learned a new move and didn't even know it!” Vickie giggles. “Now that really is stupid…” Inuyasha mumbles under his breath. Vickie has to choke in order to stop laughing. Sheila grins and rolls her eyes, “C'mon lets go!” she says, and the group is finally in the next room.

This room had a river flowing on one side and a path that led to the right. “Anybody know how to dive?” Sheila asks while Angel is inspecting the water. Bells tinkle in alarm when a Lesione pops out of the water and squirts her with a Water Gun. Angel huffs at it while putting her hands on her hips. Then flips backwards, effectively using a Somersault attack on the Lesi's face. The Lesione cries out and sinks to the bottom of the river. “Wow Angel, you really know how to kick a monster's butt!” Dark shouts in delight and Koga snorts, “No, baka, she kicked its face!” Sheila runs up to Angel and the Diana tinkles to her excitedly. “You did what?” Sheila asks Angel and everybody looks over at the two. Vickie gasps in shock when Angel leaps in the water and goes under.

“Sheila! Did you make her sad?!” Vickie shouts at her sister. Sheila shakes her head, “No, I just didn't understand her, so she's showing us instead.” A minute later, Angel resurfaces with a red treasure chest. Sheila opens it and takes out a gold coin. “I could sell this.” Sheila says while walking over to the right path, “There's nothing else to do here, so let's keep going.” Vickie motions to her demons and they all get up from their sitting positions on the ground “Well, c'mon lets go” she tells her demons and a few minutes they are all following Sheila out of the room.

An hour and two floors later, the group has finally reached the last floor. The group reaches a four way fork in the road and stops before they could go any further. “We'll get find more treasure if we split up.” Sheila tells Vickie. “Dark and Gina, come with us.” Sheila tells the demons. “Sessho and Angel, you two go down the―” Sheila stops mid-sentence when Inuyasha takes off down the path to the far right. “Koga! Go after him!” Sheila shouts and Koga runs after Inu. Sheila shakes her head and points at Sesshomaru and Angel, “You two go down the middle path.” The two nod their heads and walk into the darkened middle path. “Well, let's go.” Sheila says while walking through the dark cavern on the left. Vickie nods and goes down the path on the far left with Sheila and the young demons.

“HEY MUTT-FACE! SLOW DOWN!!” Koga hollers, but Inu keeps on running, his sensitive ears twitching the whole time, trying to catch the sound of the voice calling him from the end of the path. The voice sounded vaguely familiar, but he couldn't place it. The path curves sharply to the right and in order to avoid running into the wall, Inu jumps onto it and jumps back onto the turned path. Koga, unfortunately, doesn't even see the turn and runs right into the wall. “Ooff!” he grunts as he rightens himself and jogs down the curved path after the hanyou.

Inuyasha finally reaches the back of the cavern and can barely make out a treasure chest against the wall. “For you, my son.” The voice echoes throughout the cavern. It makes Inu stop in his tracks and look around for the source. Inu shrugs his shoulders, he guesses what for him is in that treasure chest. Inu squats down and opens the treasure chest, then falls back to the entrance from a sudden burst of light. “What the―” Koga comes in just as the light clears. “Hey, Inu,” he starts as Inuyasha is rubbing his eyes, “What?” “Get up quick, or this Dragon's gonna eat you!” the Dragon roars and charges at Inu and Koga when Inuyasha leaps into the air and comes down with a swipe of his claws. It scratches the Dragons' horn. Koga rushes in and lands a Spin Kick on the Dragon's midsection, but it doesn't even faze it.

The Dragon swipes at Inu with its claws and at Koga with its tail, knocking both of them back into the wall. Koga gingerly gets back to his feet and Inu pops up like a daisy, a gleam in his eyes. “You wanna play rough, huh? Well how about this?” Inuyasha flexes his fingers and his claws get longer.

“Iron Reaver, Soul Stealer!” he shouts as he attacks the Dragon with his claws. Gold light flashes from Inu's claws and and the light blades hit the Dragon, they each leave deep gouges in the Dragon's arms, neck, and legs. The Dragon freezes in shock and Inu takes this moment to punch the Dragon in the stomach. A second later, the Dragon falls to pieces on the cave floor in front of them. Koga looks on in shock, he had never seen a kill before, and this half demon had killed a Dragon! Inu grins and wipes his claws on his pants, then jumps over the pieces of dragon meat to the open treasure chest. Koga thinks about how beautiful Inuyasha looked bathed in the golden light of his attack. He then shakes his head at the thought, what the heck was he thinking?! Inuyasha reaches into the treasure chest and pulls out a long rusty sword with a bit of creamy white fur on the hilt.

“What the heck is that?” Koga asks him. Inu frowns, the sword had talked to him just now! Inu flicks his wrist and the sword glows gold and the blade transforms into a fang shape and the fur around the hilt gets thicker. “It's a sword called Kiba-Yasha, and it says that it's my father's fang.” “So you inherited your dad's sword?” Koga asks, and Inu nods his head while hefting the giant sword onto his shoulder, “Yep, now lets go show Vickie what I found!” he says while walking past Koga. All Koga could think about was how strong Inu looked with the sword on his shoulder…
Sesshomaru and Angel walk down their darkened path and are halfway through when they hear a roar. Sessho hears the rumbling coming from behind them and pulls Angel with him further into the cavern. The path leading back out caves in at that moment and Angel looks horrified. “Looks like we'll have to keep going.” Sesshomaru tells her. Angel nods and floats after him down the slightly curving path. Sesshomaru stops in his tracks when he hears the sound of paper rustling from above him. He looks up just in time to see a crumpled up piece of paper fall from the ceiling and land at his feet. He unfolds the paper and reads the message to himself. To my son, If you can destroy the beast inside of this cavern, you may have the gift I have left for you.

Sessho crumples the paper back up again, “Get ready to fight” he tells Angel. Angel chimes an answer and her hands start to glow white. Sessho nods and flexes his claws and his hands glow green with poison. The two walk inside of the darkened cavern to see a shaggy brown Minotaur (half man, half bull) standing and snorting in the middle of the cave. Sesshomaru steps closer to the Minotaur and raises his hand to start his attack, when the bull man sees Angel and bellows at her. Angel looks shocked, but raises her glowing hand to her lips. When the bull gets close, she quickly blows and lets out her Fairy Dust attack, sending him in the air, and with the other hand, swipes down, making the Minotaur fall on his ass. The Minotaur slowly gets to his feet and glares at Angel. Just when he would hit her with his horns, a greenish yellow rope wraps around his neck and twists. Sessho used his Poison Whip to strangle the beast and finally snaps his neck with a twist.

Sesshomaru looks past the fallen bull to the farthest reaches of the cave. He walks over to a stone with a hilt sticking out of it and pulls. The sword hums and slides out of the rock as if it were its original sheath. Sessho looks at the sword in amazement when he hears its name in his head. Tsume-Ruka

Vickie and Sheila are holding their young demons hands while walking through a zigzag path. “Why do we always wind up going on the zigzag paths?” Vickie complains. Sheila shrugs, “Dunno, guess it's fate.” Vickie rolls her eyes, “Great, there's a Fate of the Zigzags.” Gina pulls on Vickie's hand, “I thought there were only three Fates.” Vickie shrugs, “I guess this one's the long lost sister or something.” The little group comes to a cavern with two exits. One exit is on the left, and one is on the right. Vickie walks over to the one on the right and yelps when Sesshomaru bumps into her. “How'd you get here?!” she screams. “The caves connect.” Sessho answers. Angel squeezes in from behind Sessho and chimes a welcome to her Mistress.

“Hey Angel, did you find anything?” Sheila asks her monster. Angel points to Sesshomaru's sash. Sheila glances at his hips and sees a sword hanging without a sheath. Vickie notices it too. “You found a sword?!” Vickie exclaims and her dog demon nods his head. “Hey you guys, look what I found!” Inuyasha comes running in the cavern brandishing his sword all over the place with Koga panting behind him. Vickie's eyes get big when she sees the size of the sword. “Whoa, is that really a sword?!” she screams and her voice echoes throughout the cave. Inu nods and speaks the same time Sessho does.

“It's my father's sword,” they say together. Vickie raises an eyebrow, “Your father's swords, huh?” they both nod again. “Do they have names?” Vickie asks. Inuyasha grins and shows Vickie the blade. “My sword is called Kiba-Yasha.” Vickie touches the blade and it hums. Sessho pulls his sword from his sash. “And my sword is called Tsume-Ruka” he says while letting Vickie touch the long thin blade of his sword. Sesshomaru's sword tingles at the touch. Vickie looks at Inuyasha, “So your sword is called `Demon Fang'?” Inuyasha crosses his eyes in confusion “Yeah, I guess so…” Vickie looks over at Sesshomaru, “And your sword is called `Claw Soul'?” Sesshomaru nods his head.

“Alright, we're almost out of here, lets go!” Sheila exclaims. Everybody nods their heads and follows Sheila out of the cavern. The group goes into another cavern with two old treasure chests in the back. As Inuyasha walks past the chests, his sword drops and drags him to the chest on the left. “What the!?” the sword taps the old lock on the chest and it falls off; the lid popping open. Inside was an old black sheath made of an unknown wood. Inu pulls out the sheath after looking at the sword. “This is yours?” he asks Kiba-Yasha. The sword hums and when he places the tip of the blade to the opening of the sheath, it turns back into a rusty old sword again and fits perfectly inside. Sessho's sword does the same thing, only pulling itself out of his sash. Inside of Sesshomaru's treasure chest was a black sheath with a red cord wrapped around it. Sessho puts the sword in the sheath and ties it to his armor. The sword fits snugly on his hip. Inu looks for a tie as well and finds a black one and ties it to his hip as well.

A few minutes later, everybody is out of the caves and back on Vickie's Ranch. During the short time that Sheila and her group stay, Vickie's demons get to show off their weapons.
