Chapter 12
“First we have Rock Lee. Excellent in taijutsu and as fast as the wind itself. We’ve out him through a test and managed to get a good hit on Inuyasha.”
Inuyasha put a hand to his jaw. “Still hurts like hell.” Sasuke smirked and watched Kagome nod in approval.
“Then we have Hyuga Neji. His primary skill is the Byakugan and is known for his Gentle Fist Technique.” Neji gave a curt nod before turning away as they moved on. “And this is Choji Akimichi. He’s mostly known for his Human Bullet Tank Jutsu.”
Kagome turned to Inuyasha. “I thought you said only two teams and the Hokage escaped.”
“Most of the teams were out on missions when Konoha was attacked.”
She looked back at the three recruits. “Do you mind if I battle you? I really want to know how strong you are.” Choji and Lee raised an eyebrow while Neji looked at her. Finally, they nodded their agreement. “I’ll take Choji first.” Everyone cleared a good distance away.
“Begin!” Sasuke shouted as he examined the two opponents.
“First one to make a hit wins.” Kagome said. She watched Choji speed towards her with three shurikan in hand. As the shurikan flew towards her, her hand glowed a feint green. She waved her hand in front of her and watched the shurikan suddenly stop in mid air. Collective gasps emerged from the watchful group. ‘She waved off those shurikan with such ease. It’s like she’s not even trying.’ Lee thought. Kagome smirked and with a flick of her wrist, the shurikan flew straight at Choji. The sailed into his chest but Kagome knew it had been a substitution. She turned and examined the trees.
‘Damn she’s good.’ Choji thought as he tried to devise a plan. ‘What should I do? Think Choji, think!’
“You should stop thinking and start fighting.” Choji was startled and whirled around to find Kagome right behind him. With as much speed as he could muster up, he jumped a good distance away before she could strike. Kagome had swiped her claws at him but missed by mere inches. She watched him do a number of hand signs and mutter “Human Bullet Tank Jutsu!” All of the sudden, he blew up like a balloon and ducked his head and limbs inside of his clothes then began to roll. ‘This must be the technique Sasuke told me about.’ She thought as she leapt out of the way with ease. ‘If only I could penetrate him from the inside.’ Suddenly she got an idea and looked at the openings in his ball of armor. She stood in front of a tree and waited at the last possible moment to leap out of the way. As expected, Choji rammed right into the tree and was caused to stay immobilized for a moment. Kagome took that chance to wiggle through the opening to find Choji sitting in the middle with only his boxers on. With one good punch, she sent him flying out of the ball while she followed suit. The ball stretched to regular clothing as Choji lie there motionless. After a moment, he sat up and shook his head.
“Ouch! What a punch.” Kagome helped him up and he retrieved his clothes.
“Well, that was interesting.” Sasuke said as Kagome walked to him.
“I will battle another tomorrow. Right now I require a bath.”
“We have a hot springs nearby; due west.” Sasuke pointed west toward a little pathway through the forest. Kagome nodded and left. Sasuke nodded to the two remaining recruits in dismissal.
“So, do you think she can handle the recruits?” Inuyasha asked.
“With what she showed today, she could handle Orochimaru himself. Tell the others that we have a new recruit.”
“You know, technically she’s not a recruit unless she decides to join us.” Sasuke gave a mock laugh.
“After what she heard about Konoha and Naruto, she’ll join any side that wants Naraku and Orochimaru dead.”Inuyasha chuckled in agreement.
“Well, I’ll be seeing you, SIR. I have to inform the others of our new addition.” Sasuke watched him walk away and slightly chuckled to himself.

“Ahh, 8221; Kagome sighed as the hot water worked its magic on her tense muscles. As she waded in the water, her mind went back to the times when Naruto was still alive. She suddenly felt a powerful presence nearby and looked toward shore to find a woman with long black hair and mischief gray eyes. She wore a white robe and slippers. Kagome lied back down against a rock, exposing her full and pert breasts to the cool night air. “You must be Kikyo I presume?” The woman smirked.
“You presumed correct. I heard we had a new recruit from Inuyasha so I came to see for myself who it was. You must be strong; I could sense your power all the way from my house across the clearing.” Kagome gave a mock laugh. “Mind if I join you?”
“Not at all.” Kagome said, still leaning against the rock. Kikyo stripped and waded in the water next to Kagome. After a while, Kikyo thought she’d go nuts.
“Move.” Kagome raised a brow. Kikyo pulled her away from the boulder and sat behind Kagome, her legs wrapping around Kagome’s waist.
“What are….”
“You and your body are so tense that it is making my muscles ache from the tension that hung in the air.” Kikyo interrupted as she began to massage Kagome’s shoulders. Soon, Kagome’s eyes grew heavy as Kikyo continued to massage her back. “There, hopefully you will not tense back up.” Kikyo continued to stare into Kagome’s now furrowed eyes.
“I suppose you expect something in return?” Kikyo turned and stared into the sky.
“Beautiful are they not? They remind me of tiny fireflies flying around the forest.” Kagome looked up and noticed that it was the night of the New Moon.
“Humph, too bad Inuyasha can’t see the stars as clear as I can. A wondrous night this is and he has to spend it locked up in his house because he turned human.”
Kikyo gasped. “How do you know of his human night?”
Kagome leaned back against the rock. “A few days ago, when I first met him, I guessed. My demon side taught me everything about anything. I guess it was my gut instinct because he was acting like an ass that day.” Kikyo let out a small giggle. Kagome a quick look at her hands and found them really pruned. “I thank you for the massage. I’m sorry but I have to be meeting Sasuke soon so I should get going.” She swam to shore, toweled off, and got dressed. As soon as she turned to leave, Kikyo yelled out her name.
“I just wanted to say your welcome.” Kagome gave a curt nod and walked off. The darkness was bright despite the missing moon. Fireflies swarmed around her and the crickets sang into the night. She decided to take a little detour and jumped into a near by tree. When she got to the top, she leaned against the trunk and admired the night sky. Silent tears leaked from her eyes as Naruto’s face appeared before her. She let out a long howl of mourning for him and then said a silent good bye. Heartbroken, she made her way toward Sasuke’s house.
“What took you so long?” he said as he opened the door.
“My reasons are for me to know and for you to keep out.” He opened the door wider and left. Kagome stepped over the thresh hold and found Sasuke sitting at the kitchen table. After closing the door, Kagome sat across from him and waited.
“You said it was that necklace that kept you away. How?” Kagome sighed at the long night ahead of her and decided to get comfortable, telling him the origin of the jewel and how she came to possess it. “So, this Midoriko has been fighting the evil inside of the jewel and asked you for help?” Kagome just nodded. “You realize that it sounds nuts, right?” she shrugged. He shook his head.
“Well, if that answers all of your questions, I shall need a place to sleep.”
“You’ll be bunking with me.” He said automatically.
“As I said before, I shall need a place to sleep.”
“You can take my bed. I’ll sleep on the couch.” Kagome raised an eyebrow. “It’s fine with me, okay?” she gave a curt nod before standing.
“In two days I will depart to look for more recruits.” Kagome said. Sasuke turned his head to look at her.
“I’ll give you some men to go with you.”
“That won’t be necessary. I’ve chosen the men who will accompany me. Who else is in this village?”
“Sakura, Ino, and Kikyo.” She humphed and went to the bedroom to retire for the night.
*----------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------*
Sasuke looked at the clock on the coffee table and sighed angrily when it read 1:30 a.m. All night he had been tossing and turning as he thought and dreamt about the situation. “Tis no use sleeping if you will toss and turn all night.” Sasuke immediately jumped to his feet and grabbed a Kunai knife from under his pillow. He then realized that it was only Kagome. “You talk in your sleep.” She said, breaking the silence that sat uncomfortably between them.
“I know. It quit two years ago but now that you’ve shown up, I can’t sleep at all.”
“Is that a compliment or an insult?” Sasuke shrugged.
“Depends on how you look at it.” With only a large shirt on, she sat down at the table. “Do you want anything to drink?”
“Coffee if you have it.” He nodded and was set to work. She noticed that he only wore boxers and also saw that his upper body had been chiseled into perfection. There was a light sweat across his back and his muscles looked tense as if uncomfortable that he’d been showing off his skin. Kagome couldn’t help but stare at those curves running with his back and chest and disappearing below his waist line. She shook her head and looked around the room to keep her mind busy. Sasuke turned to fix her cup but her looks and body had his eyes glued to her. He realized that she was wearing on of his night shirts. Deciding to take advantage of her busy state, he examined her features. He judged her breasts and guessed they were a size C, her nipples pert from the cool air. Her legs looked as smooth as baby skin and suddenly, he felt himself starting to swell. Quickly, he busied himself fixing her coffee. He set it down in front of her and quickly turned to make a cup for him self. “Why are you so tense?” she asked.
Silently thanking her for speaking, he said “I was just thinking about my predicament. It’s just getting to me.” He explained. Kagome took a sip from her drink and sighed as the warm liquid ran down the length of her throat and into the pit of her stomach. “Why aren’t you asleep?” Sasuke had wondered.
“I don’t need that much sleep.” She answered.
“Kagome, why did you say that you only had Naruto as a friend? You always had me or Sakura.” Kagome gave a mocking laugh and took another sip.
“Please,” she drawled out. “Sasuke, you were focused on vengeance and killing. At times you rarely talked with me and when we were alone, you tried to pump me for information. Oh, and Sakura, she was too busy chasing after you all the time. When I did talk to her, our conversations ended up with you in it. I’m surprised that she hasn’t built a shrine of you in her closet yet.” Sasuke laughed.
“I suppose you’re right.” He said more seriously. She sighed and shook her head.
“Did you find out who your Clan killer was?” she asked. Sasuke shook his head
“I still haven’t a clue who it is. The only lead I have is when you told me the term ‘flesh and blood’. I automatically assumed that he had to have been a relative or something like that. I tried to find others that bore the Uchiha name but I couldn’t find anyone else. It’s most troublesome.” Kagome shook her head and drank deeply. “Your weapons are unique.” She looked up at him in confusion. “Your sword. You do remember the weapons that were strapped to your waist?” she giggled as she realized her own forgetfulness.
“Would you retrieve them for me? They should be next to your nightstand and maybe there’s one under the pillow.” She watched him disappear for a few minutes then reappear with her blades. She took them and lined them up on the table.
“What’s that writing?” Sasuke pointed to the blades of the compass. She was about to tell him when an idea suddenly struck her.
“How much land have Naraku and Orochimaru taken over?” She sheathed her weapons.
“A lot.” He unrolled a map and laid it flat against the table. She saw it was a map of all the charted land, including the small bit that was Konoha. Sasuke pointed to a small island not far off the coast in the west. “This is where they established their so-called throne. I think that was damn smart to set their headquarters there. The ocean acts as a nature defense, a barrier if you will. There’s a wall that’s impossible to climb unless you use grappling hooks. We’ve already tried to breach it but they just cut the ropes. They have taken over the entire west coast but cannot pass the Helgrind desert. The only way for them to get around it is if they chose to march through the great Edoc’sil forest or south through the Riddock Mountains. They’ve got a little under half of the mountains but it seems that they can’t breach through the forest.” Sasuke explained.
“Have any of your men been to the Edoc’sil forest?” Sasuke shook his head.
“No, there’s some kind of mysterious source coming from the trees. One of us sensed that it ran from deep inside the forest where none of us dare to check it out. We’ve been close to it before but everyone got spooked and returned here. Personally, that place gives me the creeps.” Kagome let out a long breath.
“What happened since Konoha was destroyed?” Sasuke sat down and got comfortable.
“Well, Orochimaru and Naraku met at the destruction of Konoha and decided to join forces. They started to take over little by little when a lot of the other teams went into hiding. I don’t even know why we never kept contact.
“What ever happened to Kakashi-sensei?” Sasuke shrugged.
“We don’t know. We haven’t seen him since the destruction of Konoha. We’ve sent out search parties but we figured it was a waste of time.” Kagome nodded and drank the last of her coffee.
“So, what is your current plan?” she asked as she poured herself another cup.
“To gather as many people as possible to fight against the Terrible Two.”
“Is that what you call them?”
“Yeah.”
Kagome laughed but then ventured “Well, I hope you have a plan B if your first plan fails you.” Reluctantly, Sasuke shook his head.
“We don’t have a plan B. I suppose you do?” Kagome smiled and looked out the window to see morning’s first light.
“I might but I don’t think I’ll tell you.” She got up and started toward the bedroom door.
“When will you tell me?”
She smiled and said “When your plan fails.”
Inuyasha put a hand to his jaw. “Still hurts like hell.” Sasuke smirked and watched Kagome nod in approval.
