Chapter 11

The night came and went like someone had been speeding up time. Kagome roasted fish over the fire for their morning breakfast as Inuyasha snoozed in a nearby tree. She silently climbed the tree just in time to see one of the hanyou’s ears swivel towards her. She crept closer and yelled “WAKE UP!!!!!” Inuyasha suddenly lost balance and fell out of the tree. He landed on the ground with a loud thump and was muttering curses at Kagome. She laughed as she handed him some fish and they ate silently. When they had finished, Inuyasha put out the fire and was ready to make way towards the spirit village.

“I don’t know if this is such a good idea, ya know?” Kagome didn’t bother to look back at him.

“If you don’t want to come along, then stay in Konoha.” His eyes narrowed.

“What Konoha? There’s nothing left of it.” Kagome stopped abruptly and whirled around to face him.

“What do you mean ‘nothing left’?” He shook his head with sadness.

“Come on, I’ll show you.” With their demon enhanced speed, they ran toward the ruins of Konoha. As soon as Kagome had caught sight of the old city, she fell to her knees and cried.

“Where did they all go?” she whispered.

“Most of them were murdered by Naraku’s hands. Only a few escaped.” She felt more tears stream away from her eyes as she faintly saw a spot that she knew quite well until the memory faded and nothing was left but ash.

“W-Who escaped?” she managed to choke out. Inuyasha sighed and laid a hand on her shoulder.

“The Hokage with some shinobi and ANBU, my team, and most of team 7. It happened 2 years after you left.” Kagome felt her heart sink.

“What do you mean ‘most of team 7’?” Inuyasha named all but Naruto. “What happened to N-Naruto?” Inuyasha sighed again but this time knelt in front of her. Her face was red and blotchy and had a stream of tears running down her cheeks, dripping from her chin.

“I’m sorry,” he heard her catch her breath and hold it. “He’s dead.” Her breath whooshed out of her as if she took a blow to the stomach.

“No!” she whispered, choking on her own sobs.

“He was saving so many people that day and he was putting his own life at risk for another. Team 7 and my team were the only ones left in the city, trying to stall Naraku for just enough time so the villagers could get away at a safe distance.” Kagome’s voice hitched with each breath and sob at the sad tale. “We split up, thought we could attack from different angles and defeat him. That is, until each of us had been cornered separately. We were too far apart for any of us to help each other. Naruto was the farthest away. Each of them took turns beating him until he fell from exhaustion and from internal bleeding. That’s when one of them pierced his left lung, just missing the heart. Sasuke and Sakura barely got out alive and Kikyo wiped most of them away, causing Naraku to retreat.” He looked into her swollen eyes and held her face. “By the time I got to him, he was barely breathing. He had held onto what life he had left to deliver me a message.” Inuyasha felt tears swell in his eyes. “He told me to find you and tell you that he loved you. He died in my arms that night. That’s why I have been searching for you for the past eight years, to give you his message.” Kagome was sobbing uncontrollably now as Inuyasha gathered her into his arms and cradled her. He comforted her until she had run out of tears to shed. He sat there as she cried herself to sleep, his mind going over the previous events.

“Why are you telling me this?” She had said.

“Because, you were the only person that was close to him.”

Kagome had awakened with heartfelt pain and had left over tears in her eyes. As she wiped away the crusty tears, Inuyasha put a hand on her shoulders. She took a deep breath and said “What happened to his body?”

“We buried it. If you wish it, I will show you.” Kagome shook her head slightly.

“No, it would only cause more pain to see his tombstone. Also, we must get to the spirit village.” With a cold set face and with nothing but revenge on her mind, they set out.

They had walked the whole day without rest and Inuyasha had been complaining about his hunger. “Well, then you stay and I’ll continue on. It’s not that far away. I should be able to make it before sunset.” Kagome said without turning. Inuyasha jumped in front to block her path.

“Kagome, you know as well as I that you need to eat. Keeping your energy is what really matters.” Kagome sent a death glare but continued to walk around him.

“I’m not hungry. Besides, I’m a demon and so, I can keep my strength for a couple of days. You have an appetite like a human and, therefore, you need to eat three times a day.” Inuyasha stood still, dumbfounded at her words.

“Hey!! What are ya tryin’ to say, that I eat like a pig?” Kagome continued to walk without a word. “Fine!! Go and get your revenge! I’ll be right here when you come back cryin’ that you got your ass beat!!!” Kagome continued making her way through the low hanging branches and vines. She could tell that she was getting closer to the village by the forest. She knew that the forest was the village’s shield of protection. With each step she took, the forest grew thicker. She knew she couldn’t get lost because her nose had been following the scent of sweat, blood, and cooking meat. Soon enough she stepped into the clearing of village houses and markets. Quickly, she hid among the trees and crept toward a familiar looking house. It had cobwebs in the corners of the porch and rotting wood in some places. She quietly entered the house, leaving her footprints on the dusty floors. She knelt over a spot on the floor by the bedroom. The feint scent of stale, old blood caught her nose and drew fresh tears from her eyes.

“I’m sorry mother.” She whispered as she kissed the blood-stained spot. Suddenly, anger and vengeance drained the sadness and took control over her. She stood and went to the front door where men gathered around, young and old.

“I knew I saw a demon!” one of them shouted and with it came the shouts of anger. Kagome’s tail swayed back and forth behind her as she watched them yell.

“I say we kill it!” said another.

“It,” Kagome said in a pressing yet calm icy voice. “Has a name. Do not think I’m no different than you. Kagome Higurashi is my name.” There were collective gasps from the elderly.

“It’s her!” one shouted. Kagome flashed a smirk.

“The older ones know why I have come. I will stop at no cost to bring justice to my mother.” One of the elderly men stepped up.

“We know we did wrong. In the end we have felt great guilt for what we have done.”

“Save it!!” Kagome glared at him. “You are only begging for your lives. You are not truly sorry. Answer this question as truthfully as possible and I will hold no grudge or guilt against you. If I had been gravely injured and begged your help as what I am, would you have either turned me away or killed me on the spot?” Kagome stared at them as they lowered their heads in a guilty conscience, silence befell them all. “Now, I think that just answered my question. I accept your apologies but you are not forgiven. You can tell my mother your apologies in the afterlife. Any who get in my way, will die along with them.” She said, indicating the elderly surrounding them. The older men stepped forward and bowed their heads.

“We accept our fate.” One of them said. Kagome continued to glare at them. ‘How weak. Stupid humans.’ She thought.

“You have one hour to say good bye to your families.” Each raised their head in confusion. “Did you really think that I would slaughter you without honor? Ha! You mistake me for such human emotions.” Kagome watched them leave.

“You can’t just slaughter them like animals.” Kagome’s eyes widened as she whirled around to see Inuyasha standing in her mother’s doorway. Anger quickly flooded her mind at the foolishness of his actions.

“What are you, crazy? They can go ahead and slaughter my mother, one of their own kind; just because of what she gave birth to. Now you are telling me that I can’t be just as a monster as they are and have her vengeance.”

“If you were to kill them, you’d only be lowering yourself down to their level. If its vengeance you want, take it out on you old man. I was there when it happened. My mother was the village priestess at the time. She was the only one who told your father that fighting and killing wasn’t the answer. She warned him of the consequences but he left anyway. He was the one who gathered the mob but ran away like the coward he is when they started to ran sack the house. He didn’t even stay to look into your mother’s eyes as she died. It wasn’t the villager’s fault. If anyone deserves to die, it’s your father.” Kagome’s anger grew by the second. How would she find her father? He could be dead by now. She spotted an elderly man whom she seen minutes ago and stopped him.

“What ever happened to Hatori Higurashi?”

“Some say he went to Konoha to sell swords. We think that is mostly true, seeing how he was the village’s blacksmith.”

Kagome stored the new found information away and said “Tell your friends that I have spared their lives but so help me if I find out that you ever kill another innocent again, I will hunt you down one by one. Doesn’t matter if they’re demon, half demon, or human, they are still innocent.” And with that said, Inuyasha and Kagome disappeared into the trees.

*----------------------------------------------------- --------------------------------------------*

As Inuyasha loomed over the fire, Kagome sat and inspected her sword. “You never used to be like that.” Inuyasha said, breaking the silence between them.

Kagome raised an eyebrow and asked “Like what?”

“Like a hell bitch who acts like she’s always got a tree stuck up her ass. Where’d the old Kagome disappear to?” Kagome sighed.

“The Kagome you saw before is the Kagome you see in front of you now. I hid everything about me from everyone except for Naruto. He understood me in every aspect. He was the closest and dearest friend I’ve ever had in my life. Of course, he was my only friend. Now I’m so alone.” Inuyasha shook his head and moved closer to her.

“You’re not that much alone.” He held her chin and gently looked her in the eyes. “You’ll always have me.” He whispered. A single tear escaped her eye but her face remained in that cold and stony state. After a couple of minutes, she gave in to her emotions and sagged against Inuyasha.

“Naruto was my only family left. I cared so much for him. I’ve been so caught up in my quest for revenge and didn’t get a chance to let this sadness leak out of me. Instead, I held it in and tried to conceal it but, that effort was futile.”

“You’ll soon get over it. Time will heal you. The only thing that concerns me is where to go from here.” Kagome looked up into his face.

“I want you to take me to the Uchiha and the others.” Inuyasha nodded.

“We’ll start in the morning. He isn’t too far from here. Come on, let’s just get some rest for now.”

*------------------------------------------------ -------------------------------------------------*

Early morning rose from behind the hills, tinting the clouds a yellowish color. Inuyasha and Kagome weren’t too far away from the Uchiha. To a certain point, the forest automatically became thick and seemed impossible to weave through. “Where is the Uchiha?” Inuyasha gave her a brief smirk and pointed toward the think forest.

“He’s just through here.” Inuyasha walked forward and stuck his hand out to show her that it was an illusion. He took a hold of her hand and led her through to a clearing with several houses around the clearing. Kagome followed him to the nearest house and waited as he knocked on the door. For the first time, she now saw the 24 year old Sasuke Uchiha.

“Are you stupid? It’s bad enough that we need Kikyo to conceal our hideout and here you are bring a whore who could possible be working for Naraku and Orochimaru. Some brains you have. This is why we don’t let any….” Sasuke stared into Kagome’s now vicious looking eyes. After a moment, Sasuke shook his head. “I-I know you.” Kagome dug into her pocket and found her mask.
She put it on and said “Does this look familiar?” Sasuke looked at Inuyasha in disbelief.

“You found her?”

“I vowed I would to find her, for Naruto’s sake, and I found her.” Sasuke put on a straight face and motioned them inside. Kagome stuffed her mask inside her pocket but left her head protector on.

“Does she know?”

“Yes, she does.” Kagome bounded in. “Stop talking of me as if I’m not here. To get to the point, yes, I know about what has happened to our poor Konoha and Naruto. Quite frankly, I’m not happy about it.” Sasuke set a cold at Kagome but Kagome sent it right back.

“You shouldn’t talk of it like that. Where were you for the past ten years? If you actually had given a damn about Naruto, he’d still be alive right now.” With alarming speed, Kagome wrapped a clawed hand around Sasuke’s throat and held him against the wall.

“I gave a damn. Naruto-kun was the only friend I’ve ever had. I had no one else who truly understood me.” With her free hand, Kagome yanked the Shikon Jewel from her neck and held it to where Sasuke could see. “If it weren’t for this damned jewel, I would be there fighting by his side. This jewel kept me away from the world. To you, it has been ten long years but to me, it has been just a few short hours. So, don’t question my feelings towards him of Konoha when you know of nothing.” She let him drop to the floor and backed away, her eyes challenging him to say more. Inuyasha shook his head.

“After all these years, is this the most you can make out of this reunion by fighting?” the two just kept glaring at each other. After a couple of moments passed, Sasuke got up and held out his hand.

“He’s right. It’s not the way to greet old acquaintances. We will continue this discussion later. Right now we’ve been trying to gather some highly skilled ninja to destroy Naraku and Orochimaru. We are short on choices but we have recruited a couple.” Kagome smirked and took his hand.

“Let’s see these ‘new recruits’.”
