Chapter 20

Battling it out: Fox vs. Dog

“Uhh, Kagome? What the hell is that thing?” Sango screamed. Neji looked back as Kagome ran.

“That is the Legendary Fow demon. It’s impossible that it’s even alive!” Neji explained. The fox Ran after them and opened it’s mouth wide. Kagome Took another quick glance behind her and saw only a glow of red inside the wide mouth of the fox. Sudden;y, it releassed a ball of fire that came hurdling towards her. Kagome quickly jumped away and growled towards Kirara who was already swooping down next to Sango and yowling her command.

“Kirara can hold us, come on!” Sango said quickly. Sango, her father Miroku and Sakura climbed onto the cat’s back as Kirara picked up Neji with her teeth. Kagome growled again and Kirara flew away as far as she could. Kagome turned and growled. She knew she wasn’t strong enough for the Nine Tailed fox but she could at least hold him steady while the others had their chance for survival.

:You are supposed to be dead!: She said in her Inu language. The Kyuubi growled right back at her.

:You can thank your friend Itachi for bringing me back to life.: That only made her angrier. ‘So he was behind it all.’ She thought as she dodged another attck. Kagome ran towards the fox and smacked him hard with her tail. He never wavered and bit down on her side. She let out a yowl of painand twisted her body to where she could bite him back. She held onto him and clawed him with her razor sharp nails. Kagome then sensed something along the Fox’s spine. She looked and there in front of her was a soft pink glow and somehow she knew it was her missing shard. She raised her paw as high as she could and tried to take out the shard but one of the Fox’s nine tails swept infront of her eyes and smacked her in the jaw. This caused her to let go but she hindquartered the Fox in the face, giving him a nice deep cut across his snout. Kagome connected a pathway for mindspeak and tried to reason with Naruto.

“Naruto! Wake up!” she heard the Kyuubi snarl.

:He is beyond you reach foolish girl! Nothing can save him!: Kagome opened her mouth as black Chakra gathered there. She then let it fly and watched as it hit the Fox. The Kyuubi stumbled backward and hit the ground. Kagome the raced toward the fox and pounded her paws into his stomach as hard as she possibly could. Once she had sat down on her haunches, she watched the Kyuubi slowly shrink and transform into Naruto. Kagome’s eyes widened and she too, transformed into her humanoid state. She then ran over to Naruto and lifted his head into her lap. A dark aura enveloped the are and a shadow that came to reveal Itachi.

“You are a monster for reviving the dead.” She whispered angrily. She kept staring at Naruto’s features. Tears welledin her eyes and the longing she had dismissed all that time came at her full force.

“I have told you. There are dar worse fates than death.” He replied.

“And so you give him this fate!?!?” She yelled, looking into his eyes tearfully. She knew that he didn’t care, not a bit. She looked back at Naruto and swore softly. ‘He never deserved this fate. He deserved a life that was his to control.’ She thought, the tears from her eyes running down her cheeks in a great flood.

“You know what you have to do Kagome. Too bad it is you that must kill the spirit of Konoha.” She heard him say. Kagome snapped her head up to face him but when she looked there wasn’t a soul in sight. She cried even harder at the fact that she had to take out the jewel shard that kept him alive. Trying not to disturb him, she carefully turned him on his stomach. Kagome instantly recognized the bllack aura eminating from the shard in his back.

“I can’t do it!” She cried into the night. She slowly reached for the shard and when she touched it, the black aura instantly disipated and pink bright lightreplaced it. Kagome quickly pulled her hand awayand stared at it. She then heard Naruto’s heart beat quicken and she felt him start to rise onto his hands and knees. Quickly, she stepped away from him, keeping a safe distance in case he wanted to strike but when she saw his face, she instantly knew he meant no harm.

“K-Kagome? Is that you?” Keeping her defensive crouch on the ground she nodded and watched as tears flowed from himwhen he got to his feet. She watched him chuckle a little before looking down at his feet. “I guess the future didn’t turn out the way we wanted it huh?” The soft breeze blew his hair slightly to the left. She could see the blood across his nose from where she scratched him. “What? Not even a hello for an old friend?” Kagome opened her mouth but when she tried to speak, her throat choked back her words as tears flowed more fiercely.

“I-I’m sorry.” She managed. She then stood up and ran into his waiting arms. Naruto welcome her embrace and pulled Kagome close. Kagome held him with equal force as she cried into his shoulder. “I have missed you, Naruto.”

“As have I.” He answered. They stayed that way until Kagome’s eyes ran dry. Her choked sobbing dissipated.

“What am I to do? I have to take it out before another evil tried to control you again.” She felt Naruto pull back to look into her eyes, his softened expression made her want to cry even more.

“Do what you must. I won’t hold you to it, Kagome.” He watched her shake her head violently.

“I can’t. I won’t. There’s another way to bring you back. There’s got to be another way.” Her words came out in a sharp whisper instead of determination. “Just let me find Tsunade or one of the older people to see if there is a cure. Midoriko, she’ll know what to do.” A glimmer of hope flashed in her eyes. Naruto shook his head.

“Kagome, I doubt there are any cures for death. Listen to yourself.”

“No,” She countered. “At least travel with me to the Edoc’sil Forest. I’ve gathered a group that will help me. She then saw Naruto’s eyes glower.

“Why do you go there? Men go in but never do they return. There are things in there Kagome. Why would you go there?” His hands gripped her shoulders.

“I seek their help whoever they are. I found Sasuke and Sakura. They are preparing an army. An Army that shall be rid of Naraku and Orochimaru. Please understand that if they are on our side, we have a good fighting chance.” Uncertainty crossed over his features.

“I’ll go with you then.” He said closing his eyes. A smiled stretched over Kagome’s face as she hugged him tight.

“Come, lets meet the others” She said with excitement.

Everyone sat on edge. The stream flowed noisily beside them and insects chirped in the night. It had been almost several hours since the attack and everyone was rigid, hoping their fearless leader was still alive. “Maybe we should go find her.” Sakura suggested. Sango and her father jumped slightly in the break of silence. Miroku shook his head.

“It would be useless to try. If we were to split up and search, we would only be wasting time. If one of us found her, then we’d have to search for the rest of us. It is best to wait here. She will follow our scent.” He said with a sigh. Sango stroked Kirara absentmindedly and Neji sat beside her with his eyes closed.

“Mewww!” Kirara jumped from her master’s lap and ran into the trees. “Kirara! Come back!” Sango said as she started toward the place where Kirara disappeared.

“It’s alright Sango. ‘Tis only me.” Kagome said as she appeared into the clearing with Kirara on her shoulder. Neji stood and nodded.

“We feared that–“ he cut off his words when Naruto entered the clearing behind Kagome. “How is it possible?” he whispered into the wind. Naruto walked up to Neji and put a hand on his shoulder.

“Don’t ask me to explain. I hardly know myself.” Naruto’s blue eyes sparkled”It’s good to see you again. Where’s Sakura?” He then heard a slight gasp form his right and found Sakura sitting on a broken log. Squatting down, Naruto gave her a fierce hug. “It’s so good to see you.” He pulled her away and gave her one of his goofy smiles. Sakura’s eyes were wide and glossy. One couldn’t tell if she were surprised or scared. Even though he could see the fear in her face, Naruto could remember all the good times they’d had. Looking at each one of his old friends triggered a happy memory. When he thought of himself, however, he only thought of death; a decaying body slowly rotting in it’s casket. It was wierd being alive afte so many years of death. To feel and think and breathe was something he was now not accustomed to. The moment he breathed, Naruto had thought of this godforsaken place as hell. Instead he got hell on earth. Ever since he “woke up”, he felt pain, an immensive amount of pressure in his heart that he so wished would leave him. Even in the pressence of his friends and old love brought him pain. And then e remembered feeling like there wasn’t a problem in the world. “I think I’ll take a walk.” He said as he stood and strted for the trees. Kagome nodded at his departure and sighed heavily.

‘If only I could find a way to keep him here with us. Everyone would be happy and back to normal then.’ She thought, her mind slowly drifting into unconciousness.

Author’s Note:
Okay well this is it. I’ll try really hard to get another chapter up soon. Sorry if it’s been a long while since I updated but I’ve been really busy with work and school. Not to mention that I couldn’t think of anything to write about. I’ve run almost out of ideas! Anyway I hope you’ve enjoyed this chapter.

In the next chapter:

The group made it but find themselves trapped.

“Damn it!” Kagome cursed.

“What are they?” Neji asked.

“Why, they’re.....” Sakura replies.

Next time in The Edoc’sil Forest.
