Author's Note: WHOA somebody actually replied? I honestly thought about removing this fan fic. I had nothing but a vague idea of where it was going. Sometimes I have the urge to write something and it ends up in brain farts. Any ideas would be greatly--greatly appreciated. I'm going with the flow, and hopefully won't drown.
After arriving at Kakashi's place they began to unpack. Kurenai placed her clothes in the space of empty drawers. She added her Icha Icha Paradise collection by Kakashi's on the book shelf that seemed to be filled with orange paperbacks. God, we must have every book Jiraiya ever made. Indeed, every series the perverted novelist wrote had been on the shelf. A collection to be either very proud-- or ashamed of.
“The sun is about to set soon. I watch every chance I get. Would you like to join me?” Kakashi asked.
“That sounds nice. Hm…Oddly sensitive of you, Kakashi. I never took you as one to show such an emotion.” She replied. “Are you gay?” she smirked.
“By the looks of it, you just think I'm an insensitive pervert. Being sensitive doesn't make me gay. Give me more credit. I've been oh so generous to invite you into my home. I think I deserve it.” He replied, slightly hurt but never showing any sign of it. Perhaps he was rather unemotional.
“Yes. It was very kind of you to let me stay with you. Until I find a place of my own that is.” She replied. “Oh! We better hurry up, or the sun will set without us.”
Hurrying to catch the sun before it set, they left the apartment. Kakashi was ahead, while Kurenai followed. She didn't know where they were heading to watch this sunset…where were they going? Still, she trusted Kakashi, he wasn't about to lead them into some ditch. No matter how empty headed he could appear. 'Watching the sunset together. Only to return back home. Our home. Is this something out of a romance novel? No, this is just his usual routine and he invited me along…There's nothing going on. God why isn't there something going on.'
At the thought, Kurenai gave a little pout. She was rather disappointed with the thought. Never openly admitting it, an attraction to the silver haired jounin was always apparent. Asuma, however, was the one that had asked her out. 'Asuma…'
Obviously noticing her sad look, he stepped in. “Are you ok? You seem to be a little down. Surely watching a sunset with me isn't that upsetting.” Kakashi smiled as a feeble attempt to cheer her up.
“Oh, it's nothing…I just thought about Asu—“ she saw Kakashi go stiff at the mention of his name. Was something the matter? He knew about the break up, but it shouldn't affect him in such a way. After realizing his response she cleared it up with a question of her own. “Er… Where are we going Kakashi? I know we're going to watch the sunset but…I thought we'd just step outside or something.”
“That's a secret. You'll have to find out when we get there.” Kakashi winked at her, but since she could only see one of his eyes it could have been a mere blink. That hitae and mask got more annoying each moment he tried to suggest any type of emotion. It completely dulled the affect of anything he'd express, which added to the disturbance.
When he heard her nearly utter Asuma's name, he couldn't help but stiffen. Asuma would always be the man that snatched Kurenai before he gathered the courage to ask her something as simple as a date. Funny, he was an elite jounin—one of Konoha's best shinobi, and he was afraid of asking one of his best friends out on a date. Maybe it was more complicated than that. It was more complicated than that. His feelings for Kurenai weren't on the level of sheer physical attraction. Yes, that had been part of it. Her beauty wasn't bound to be unnoticed.
Although viewed as a pervert, Kakashi did not freely get into relationships. He rarely flirted with anybody unless it was for laughs or a joke. Ogling was Jiraiya's job. The only evidence of him being a pervert were the little orange books. This surprised him—not even half of Konoha knew what the reading material was about. But she did, he thought. Probably the only other person to read it. And although hesitantly at first, openly admitted it. 'I knew I liked her…' It had definitely been her personality and presence that he admired.
They arrived at an opening now. A lush carpet of green were at their feet. Trees and bushes were at their backs while in their sight was a clear view of the sun. Hues of orange, red, and yellow graced the edge of the village. The area promised privacy while the sunset allured them.
“This is so beautiful. It's almost entrancing. How did you ever find this place?”
“It's been a secret of mine since I was a boy. Mmm…yes, this place has helped me over many hard times.” He seemed to thinking back to times of the past. A look, or rather sense of sadness and remembrance showed.
In a strive to comfort him she replied with a soft comment, “I'm glad you shared this with me.” A small smile appeared on her lips in reassurance.
“I wanted to share this with you.” Intensity shone in his eyes. If it was passion, love, or just seriousness was unsure. All she knew was the intensity and aimed to match it.
Both inched closer to each other as if afraid the other might run away. Hands reached out to touch in a way to confirm this was real. As Kurenai's hands met Kakashi's chest it established the moment was not a reproduction of some dream. Assured that he wouldn't disappear into a cloud of smoke, she reached up to his face. Fingers lifting the headband to reveal the sharingan. The intense gaze doubled now with the mismatched eyes. Her finger tips lightly traced the edge of the black mask as if she dared remove it. Hands cupped his face asking silent permission. He grasped her slender wrist in his hand and slowly nodded in response.
Hours seemed to drag by in the slow removal of the fabric. She longed to rip that mask off his face for so long. But now…now that it could be done, she almost feared it. Why? In her subconscious, could she be afraid what he looked like? What if the rumors of scars and disfiguration were true? No, that wasn't it. Deep down, she would have accepted him no matter how he looked. Deep down, she knew he'd be gorgeous. It was possible that the mask was the safety line. The line that, if crossed, would never appear again. It was time to cross that line.
After slowly removing the mask only a fourth way down, she realized that dragging it on was pointless. She tore that mask down the rest of the way like she couldn't wait a second more. Her lips met his in an impatient, longing, kiss, not bothering to look at his features. There's always time for looking later. she thought.
The moment her lips touched his, he had kissed back. Ever so slowly he opened his mouth and stroked his tongue against her lips asking for entrance. As she opened her mouth, his tongue entered taking as much as it could get. He explored, tasting her while discovering all the secrets of what she had offered. 'Don't let this be a dream…' both of their minds screamed.
They stepped back until Kakashi's back met with the firm bark of a tree. Kurenai tugged his shirt downwards suggestively. Both slid until they reached the soft grass.
Tonight they wouldn't remember the sunset, but would always be thankful for it.
Author's Note: This was a more serious chapter without much humor. It was really a turning point for the relationship, so I found it appropriate. I don't know how long this story will go on, and may not be adding lemons later…I've only read them, so I would probably find some way to screw it up since I wouldn't know what I was doing. ;_;
*I'm aware that the sun rises in the east…just…pretend*
