Chapter Seven: Source of My Pain
“…my knee is still shaking, like I was twelve:
Sneaking out the classroom, by the back door:
A man railed at me twice though, but I didn't care:
Waiting is wasting for people like me…”
Sasuke heard the soft voice singing to him, and he opened his eyes slightly. He turned his head to face the person beside him.
His vision was bleary, but he could make out that it was a girl, reading a book? She had one arm propping her head up, legs crossed, elbow on her knee.
She was kinda pretty.
“…don't try to live so wise:
Don't cry, `cuz you're so right:
Don't dry with fakes or fears:
`Cuz you will—“
Temari stopped singing. She noticed that he was awake and smiled, closing her magazine.
“Wakey wakey Mr. Sleepy.” She said, sitting on the edge of his bed.
Sasuke blinked to clear his vision and saw the bandages on Temari's face and neck. His eyes wandered further down. She was wearing short-sleeves, and have bruises and cuts all over her arms.
Suddenly, like a wave, all of the memories flooded back to him, causing a sharp pain to cut into his head.
Sasuke groaned and sat up, holding his head. Temari smirked and pressed the back of her hand to his forehead. Sasuke closed his eyes and leaned against her touch. Her fingers felt cool against his burning skin.
Then he felt her arms around him, pushing him back against his warm pillow. Sasuke didn't even protest. He was too tired.
Temari walked to the other side of his room and opened the window. The curtains fluttered lazily, and a cool breeze swept in, splashing across his face.
Sasuke relaxed, nestling against the pillow. Temari smiled again and resumed her seat on the foot of Sasuke's bed.
It's nice…
…being next to me…
“Hey…Temari…?” Sasuke mumbled, closing his eyes.
“Hn?” she murmured, opening her magazine again.
“…What happened after I passed out?”
Temari sighed and flipped a page. She waited a few moments before answering him.
“I tried to take him on. I used up all of my kunai and shuriken. He beat me up and threw some of his own daggers at me. Then he finished it all off by knocking me unconscious with a kick in the stomach and a blow to my head.”
Temari flipped a page again.
“Oh.” Was all Sasuke could say.
He looked down at his undamaged body and back at Temari's cuts and bruises, her bandages and scars.
Again…
I lost again.
”Thanks.”
Temari looked up from her magazine.
“What?”
Sasuke rubbed his arm embarrassedly and looked away.
“I said thanks.” He mumbled again, now rubbing his neck. God, he felt so sore.
“…for...y'know…”
Sasuke wasn't good with “thank yous”. Or “I'm sorries” for that matter.
He continued to rub his neck distractedly.
“And…sorry that…you got hurt and all…”
Temari blinked.
“Wow, this is a first.” She said, smirking slightly.
“Who knew you were such a softie on the inside?”
Sasuke scowled.
The conversation died after that. The small clock that sat on Sasuke's tableside ticked incessantly.
“Was that your brother?”
Sasuke blinked and looked up. Temari was staring at her magazine intently now, not looking at him.
Sasuke felt himself nod. There was a cold lump in his throat, like he swallowed an ice cube. He finally managed to say something.
“Yeah.”
Temari finally looked at him in the eyes.
“He's scary.” She said simply.
Sasuke just nodded again, unable to say anything else. No, it wasn't that he couldn't say anything. He was afraid that if he started, he would never stop All those angry, held back words would come blurting out of his mouth, and—
Sasuke shook his head, as if to clear his thoughts.
“Don't brood on it so much.” Temari said, tossing a pillow at him. Sasuke caught the pillow and peered back at her. Temari smiled a little. Not a smirk. A genuine smile.
“If you keep thinking about it, it'll mess with your head and you'll grow white hair.”
He stared at her for a moment. Sasuke smiled slightly to himself.
Temari leaned over and grabbed his jaw, forcing his mouth open. Sasuke nearly gagged.
Temari grinned, holding a bowl of Ramen. Sasuke's eyes widened. It was steaming hot. He tried to pull away, but Temari held his face.
“Sasuke, you haven't eaten in two days straight!” she chided, raising the spoon.
Sasuke: O_O
Doctors, nurses, patients and visitors passing by room 97 that day at around 3:15 in the afternoon could hear a laughing girl, a cursing boy, and clashing and banging coming from beyond that door.
“Sasuke, you're such a spazz.”
“…shut up.”
