Settling In

A new year approached quicker than anyone could fathom. The moon shone bright in the sky and illuminated all the shrines which at the moment were hoarded with people. A new year meant changes. The simplest things could be changed with time and a simple fortune could change all your luck. A good one could mean peace or prosperity or a bad one could destroy everything you worked so hard to gain. A cold gust of wind blew into the new year making it even chiller to bear. People swarmed all together dressed in yukatas, a tradition since the beginning of time. They were embroidered with many different patterns, swirls of colors or flower petals bought out a sense of life. Even though midnight approached people all stayed huddled together waiting to start the new year at a holy place. The more faith and devotion you showed usually meant a better fortune but than again not for all.

A young woman walked silently through the crowds, trying not to bump into anyone or anything. Her eyes jaded in color or maybe by her memories. She kept her head down, pink hair hiding her frown and uneasiness. All the happy families made her very uncomfortable. But yet one could not miss what one never had. Her sandal made a large thumping noise as it hit the ground. So many people to take in, everyone looked so innocent but yet they all had their secrets. Some more serious than others and it was impossible to know what one did with their life. The most innocent people though were the ones hiding something, such as herself.

She waited in line again, just like every other year for her fortune, fingers crossed that it would not be negative, but yet the seventeen years she had been alive not one dealt with happiness. They were all the same and yet every year she looked for something new. All one could do was hope or at least at the time that's what she believed. A man bumped into her and she apologized quickly, hoping he did not feel a large metal hump tucked away in her yukata. In this world she never left unprepared.

Fireworks lightened up the sky, such a simple thing bought people great joy. All the different colors came together to make this whirlwind of color similar to a rainbow just in a circular formation. It reminded her of summer but the chilly air bought her out of that revere. She looked ahead and down at her plain blue gown. Unlike everyone else's yukata hers was plain and boring unlike her personality.

An old man, the shrine keeper probably, looked at her credulously as she stepped up to reach for her fortune. It made her nervous and sweat a little. He bought out his hand and slowly handed it to her with a frown which she noticed, but quickly ignored it and snatched the small piece of paper, which each year bought her great despair and a sense of loneliness.

She slowly unraveled it and read it silently next to a sakura tree, no petals just bare and empty. `Defy your destiny or live a life of shame.' Eyes blinked in confusion, it wasn't exactly what she expected nor was it as depressing as others. She had kind of expected something such as tainted hands will never heal or you're going down the wrong path.

“Defy your destiny?” Our pink haired heroine did not quite exactly comprehend but did not have time to waste. A new year had come and she could not stop and take a look around. A new day was awaiting, a new sin to add to her already cluttered conscious.

A beeping sound made her stop from her race out of the deathtrap, such a peaceful place every other day of the year. She had discarded those enormous sandals and ran freely in white socks. The beeper read `Meet me tonight, 11:30 p.m. sharp at the warehouse.' She sighed, an assignment probably, but there was no time for that now. She would deal with it tomorrow, right now she was wasting valuable sleep time. A new school year would not wait for her.

So into the darkness she ran silently wishing that she could keep running forever.

A raven haired boy with his hair up in spiky tendrils awoke from his peaceful nights sleep. A loud scream could be heard. That's what stunk about having a room right over the basement. You heard all the commotion and the torturing, something he never liked and left a pang of guilt and regret in his mind. He did not take pride in the fact that he helped to destroy someone else's future. But being part of this gang meant many sacrifices and a life full of secrets and revenge. A desire to destroy the person that put him into this position lay dormant in his mind but one could not change what they were born into, it was what you could call destiny.

His room was not lavishly decorated more than others but nothing speculator. A bed in the corner and a dresser made up the décor. He may have been the bosses brother but he did not live like he did Sasuke lived much more subtly.

Sasuke took his pillow and covered his ears but the air was thick, covered in tension. He knew he would not be able to sleep. It was hard enough to have to return back to school in a few hours but to have to listen to someone else suffer. He got up and walked around, fumbling for the light switch, the clock read 5:30 a.m. It was early but he could kill time till seven when he left.

The house he lived in, with about fifty other people, was surprisingly quiet. The bathroom was free for once too. It was dark in the hallways, painting hung from side to side. It showed his ancestors and certain honorable members of the group that defended their life for the Uchiha Clan to exist. The pictures though were getting smaller as the wall grew longer. His parent's photos hung at the end of the bleak hallway. A few candles were the only light guiding him yet he knew this place in and out. How he got caught up exactly in this he did not question or where his parents had disappeared too.

That was a no no. He remembered distinctly when he asked his older brother Itachi. Sasuke got a good beating for that one. He shook his head, every time he walked down this hallway something in his mind replayed and some sad memory appeared, yet he could never remember from where. “Errg” he balled his hands into a fist but reframed from punching anything.

He would just get ready for another day at school maybe his only escape from this sick reality. He'd go in the shower knowing that his hands could never be clean.

Sakura put on her uniform which consisted of a rather short skirt for her taste and really long socks. They did though bring out the slenderness of her legs. She was petite and bit smaller than most girls but that was because of lack of nutrition. Her hair was still wet from the shower as she brushed her pink hair neatly and gently. She went to the most elite school which most of the students paid there way in but she on the other hand had a brain which wasn't actually accepted in this society. For girls it was either you had beauty or a brain and if you had both well you were an outcast, a freak of society which was what poor Sakura was known by the kids at school.

School was just as bad as being here though it was not as dark. There was no light in this place. The hallway was unsafe and walking out of your room without a gun could cost you your life. But this was the only place she could call a home and escaping this world she grew up in was virtually impossible. She had not much going for her. At school she could not talk for if anyone ever found out about her big secret well they wouldn't want to and nor would she be able to handle the pain again. Images of certain faces still clouded her vision on rainy days.

In this place it was either be eaten or step up. Her mentor she did not see anymore and had no clue what happened to him. The men around her treated her like dirt and more than once was there an instance where they put her life on the line. But she survived and would not back down no matter how much people seemed to keep shoving her into the ground.

The girls at school may hate her which she never did nor will understand and her luck may have worn out many years ago but one thing kept her going and that was her ambition. To see the outside world threw different eyes. A goal maybe to far away to reach but she would try and that was all she could do. She slipped her shoes on, a two inch heal to make her look taller.

Sakura quietly opened her door. It was her last year of high school which frightened her because afterwards she would be here forever and become an official…

“Sakura” Her head snapped around to the man that said her name. His hair was slicked back in a ponytail, rings on his hands, chains jingling from his pockets. She never remembered names well and this one was no different. All of them were the same, pigs in there own way. She took orders from her boss and no one else. Her eyebrow lifted up in annoyance when he did not speak and finally handed her an envelope.

At first she was a bit skeptical but realized it was nothing more than tuition. They did pay for her school, the only favor they did do but at a small price which made her stomach churn. She dashed away, pistol tucked in her skirt pocket. Tonight she would meet with the head boss which did not settle well.

Sakura opened the doors to the outside world. She always took her time getting to school because the walk was the only thing that kept her at ease and gave her a piece of serenity. All the trees were bare but the sun shone and the birds chirped, such a simple peaceful life. Often she wondered what a normal life would be like doing all that girly jazz but that was never a focus for her, it was always train and study. Being a normal girl was never in her curriculum.

A small sigh escaped her lips and she closed her eyes for a brief second to catch the breeze but as she stretched out she bopped into someone. “Oh pardon me.” Her monotone voice spoke. That's how it had to be in this outside world. She turned around to see a guy her age that she kind of recognized. He had black hair which was spiked up and very dark, ominous aurora around him. `Oh he's the one that has girls surrounding him all the time.' It wouldn't look good for her to be walking near him so she sped up and walked into school leaving him in the dust.

The school was the largest in the city and had the best equipment and was known for the high ranking scores it got. Konoha High it was called and it led up to its reputation. It was a good eight acres give or take a little. There were spots in the back of the school where you could lounge and any sport you imagined could be played here. Athletics was a large part of this school though Sakura did not take part in any or extra activities.

Classes were supposed to be divided up by rank but yet even though she ranked one of the highest she always got stuck with Ino. Sakura slowly walked into the room and not even a moment she got to herself before the blonde brute makes an ass out of her by sticking her foot out. She realized long ago dodging and standing up to the queen of all preps would cause too much attention so she did her trip routine, wondering maybe if it was better she found out.

“Oh how could I miss you and your monstrous fore head?” Ino remarked and then stopped paying her any attention when Sasuke walked in. `Good riddance' she thought though felt badly for that boy, the same one she had bumped into earlier. Anyone who could stand Ino got props in her mind.

Who knew in a few short weeks he would be playing a major roll in her life.

A/N: Sakura and Sasuke life will slowly unravel so don't worry it will all be explained. It turned out a bit darker than I wanted it but that's how the cookie crumbles. Some feedback on this would be nice. I know at the moment where I'm going and the next chapter I have started so give me a couple days. Peace
