Curse of the Phoenix

 

Chapter 1: The Beginning

There was fire everywhere. A little girl stood in front of a burning house with tears streaming down her face. She was screaming for her mother and father. “Mommy!!!! Daddy!!!! Where are you?!?!?! Don't leave me!!!!!!” She was screaming at the fire. That's when you saw two people inside the depths of the fiery blaze, a man and a woman. The fire…the fire was eating them alive. “MOMMA!!!!!!!!!!!!! NOOOOOO!!!!!!!” The girl screamed as she tried to reach her parents in the collapsing house and stretched out her hand as if to catch them in her tiny palm. The fire was so close that the fingers of her outstretched hand were singed. “Momma-*gasp”

Time seemed to slow down as the girl tripped on a large stone and fell onto the ground. Suddenly a flash of white light erupted, temporarily blinding the child. And when it finally faded away, the girl found herself trapped inside a ring of blistering hot fire. “Mommy? Daddy?” She looked around at her surroundings and peered around in confusion but failed to notice the dark shadow looming over her, slowly enveloping her tiny form. She suddenly tensed as she heard a rumbling growl behind her. Eyes wide with fear, the girl turned around slowly, her small body shaking in terror.

She found herself face to face with a giant snake made of fire, its slit amber eyes piercing her with its stare. The child lost control over her body as she faced the monstrosity and didn't even dare to breathe. The fire beast was staring at her intently when it abruptly reared its head, emitting an earsplitting screech…and signaling its assault. The girl finally snapped out of her daze and regained her voice. The snake screeched even louder (if that was possible) and bared its fangs as it approached rapidly for the kill. “NNNNNOOOOO!!!!!!!!” The snake went right through her, but its searing body of fire swallowed the girl's tiny form. “DADDY!!!!! MOMMA!!!!!” As she screamed, the child felt her left arm start to burn. The burn grew bigger and bigger until the girl felt overwhelmed with the heat. “NNNOOOO~~!!!!!!!!!!”

“~~OOOOOO!!!!!” Kira screamed into the night air. Sitting upright, she gasped and looked around her room in a panic. There was no fire beast, only her slightly cramped bedroom and a clothes-littered floor. Her face was covered in sweat and her body felt numb. Kira held her head in her hands and closed her eyes.

*Damn! It was just a dream! And to make things worse, it was that same dream… the one about my parents dieing. Arhg! Why do I keep having this same dream?!?! *

Suddenly a jolt of searing pain ran up her left arm, nearly causing Kira to shout in pain. She tightly clutched her arm as she hissed from the throbbing scar. “Stupid burn”, she mumbled under her breath. After a couple of minutes the pain slowly subsided and she lifted her hand from the burn. This burn… Kira couldn't really remember how she got it but only that it had to do something with her parents' deaths.

The girl waited a few more minutes before deciding to get up from the bed. And as she was walking towards the bathroom, she glanced at the digital clock that was on the drawer beside her bed. The neon green numbers glared 5:32 a.m. A sigh escaped from her lips. *Another sleepless night, another class to fail.* Kira continued her treck to the bathroom where she washed her face, brushed her teeth, and combed her long, wavy raven black hair. Once she had finished with all the hygienical stuff, Kira headed back towards her bedroom and searched for a suitable outfit for school. She ended up wearing a black tank top that said “BITE ME” in big white letters, a pair of black fingerless gloves, and as for her pants, Kira wore slightly baggy cargo pants. She observed her reflection in the full-length mirror that was next to her bedroom door, and nodded with satisfaction at her image.

Kira took another glance at the clock and found that it was 6:05. *I've got plenty of time before school starts…l think I'll have breakfast today for once.* She walked to the tiny kitchen to get herself a box of cereal and some milk from the fridge. After setting the two items on the dining room table, Kira headed back to the kitchen to grab a spoon and a bowl.

She ate her breakfast in silence, the only sound coming from the crunching of the cereal that was being chewed in her mouth. *Sometimes I forget how empty this place feels.* Finishing the last of her breakfast, Kira put the utensils in the sink. She then went back into the bathroom to set up her hair. And as she was brushing her long locks of hair, Kira couldn't help but stare at the burn mark that was on her left arm. She set down the brush with a clack on the sink counter. Something just wasn't right. Kira didn't know what but she had an eerie feeling that something was wrong. *It's probably just because of that dumb dream I had last night.* She shook her head as to assure herself, and then she looked straight at herself in the mirror. Piercing amber eyes stared back at an identical pair. “Look Kira, you're not gonna go all insane and all just because of some dream, got it?”

Kira firmly nodded her head again, picked up the brush, and resumed brushing her hair. As she was finishing tying the last of her braid, Kira noticed the time in the reflection of the clock. She quickly turned around and gave a small yell of frustration as she quickly grabbed her bag before bolting out the door. The clock read 6:55 a.m. Class was going to start in 5 minutes… and it takes Kira about 5 minutes to just get around the corner on her street. A large sweatdrop formed on the back of her head as she ran her way to school. *Damn it all! Guess I'm gonna be late again!* To this Kira added a mumble under her breath. Something about annoying schools, stupid classmates, and insane teachers.
