Distant Thoughts: Chapter 1: Happenings

~~

Nothing could be seen all around. The mist was heavy in the air and it was hard to breathe.
Inhaling slowly, green eyes squinted to see farther into the screen that lay in front of her. She
cautiously stepped forward towards a fading light. Before she made it to far, she was hurled back
and slammed to the ground. She gasped for breath as the air was knocked out of her.

The light faded away before her and a cold chill fell over her. She wrapped her arms around her
as she shivered, but soon found another pair of pale arms wrapping around her. No warmth
spread through her, it was as though the person behind her did not radiate any body heat at all.
Cold breathing fell to her side as she felt a pair of lips move against her ear.

"Sakura,"

~

Sakura sprang up in her bed as a cold sweat burst over her. Her blanket fell to the side of the
comforter as her hair swayed in the slight breeze caused by the open window. She shifted and
placed her head in her hands, breath still coming in ragged spurts. Her eyes dilated in the
darkness as she tried to regain her thoughts. The wind blew in and she shivered as it made
contact with the light sweat on her pale skin. She slowly turned her head towards the window.

"Strange, I didn't leave it open before I went to bed. Maybe moth-…." she stopped whispering as
tears spilled down her cheeks. She shook her head, trying to ward off the thoughts she was
having, but they wouldn't relent. Tears continued down her already puffy eyes as she
remembered yesterdays events.

~

It started out as any other day for Sakura. Her parents were once again on another mission near
the Sound Country. Konoha has been having problems with them for awhile now, but it was no
surprise to those who know why things were happening. So she would wake up on her own and
start to gather her gear for another day of Ninja training with her sensei Kakashi.

She slowly walked out of the house and made her way to the meeting place to find her teammates
already there. Sakura tilted her head, usually she made it here before Naruto, she shrugged it off
as she heard part of the argument that has been transpiring before she even got there.

"Shut up! I swear today I will show you I am stronger!" Yelled Naruto as he lifted his fist in
anger at Sasuke. He was dressed in his normal orange jumper and his holster on his leg. Sasuke
gave him a sideways glance and shrugged his shoulders. He then turned to ignore Naruto,
irritating him more, and gave a small nod to Sakura. She returned one of her own.

Ever since she fought Ino, she hasn't tried to hard on getting Sasuke to notice her. She believed
now that her first priority is that she should get stronger than Ino and to be able to protect herself
then rely on her team, her hair length was a constant reminder of this fact. But with the new
change in herself, she has noticed that Sasuke would talk and be by her more then when she was
constantly nagging him. ‘Guess I am not as annoying anymore to him.' She smiled at her thought
but soon frowned as she felt slight pressure from behind her.

"Hello Sakura-chan!" Naruto squeezed harder as a vein popped out on her forehead.

"Naruto, let go by the count of three…one….two.." She lifted her fist but Naruto let go before he
had to suffer her wrath. He smiled his foxy smile and left to sit down on the railing of the bridge.
She too sat down on the railing but on the opposite side of both Sasuke and Naruto. Her feet
dangled as she soon stood up on the rail and started walking on it, balancing with her arms.
Sasuke just looked to the ground and Naruto to the sky, all three trying desperately not to be
bored as they wait for their Sensei.

A sudden cool breeze flew past them and lifted Sakura's short hair, soon though she felt a pain in
her head and clutched her head in trying in vein to relieve the pain as she lost her balance on the
railing. Before Sasuke or Naruto could get to her, she toppled over the side and fell towards the water.

Before she hit the water she felt something grab her and pull her up. The pain at that time started
to reside from her mind and she looked up to see who had grabbed her. A hidden face looked
down at her, one dark eye looking at her in slight concern. Kakashi set her slowly onto the
ground of the wooden bridge and took a step back as Naruto flew past him and hugged her.

"Sakura-chan! Are you okay? You almost fell in!" She shook her head, trying to clear her head of
the dizziness she felt. "Stop squeezing her, she would have only gotten wet." Replied Sasuke as
he walk up to them. Sakura looked up to him and then disentangled Naruto from her and got up.

"I'm fine, the sudden gust of wind just unbalanced me a little and I fell." she lied. She put a hand
to the back of her head. ‘Where did that sudden headache come from?' she thought but was
brought out as she heard a throat clear.

"Well now that we know Sakura is okay we can start on our mission for today."

~

Sakura leaned on a tree as they stopped for rest. Today they were supposed to find some bird that
had a message tied to it but got lost in the late night mist the other night. Still no sign of the bird
could be found and its been three hours since they started. Now they were taking a break before
they started back up again, this time splitting up to cover more ground.

A whistle was heard and soon she got up off the ground. Naruto leaped to the west as Sasuke
went east. She sighed and left to go south, knowing Kakashi-sensei already left to north by the
way the whistle came from. She continued a little further until she started to climb up the tree in
front of her. ‘Birds will probably use trees as a means for rest and protection against predators.'
she thought and continued her way through the brush.

She did not make it that far before she heard rustling above her. She stopped and slowly climbed
the tree further up. Moving a leaves out of the way, something jumped onto her lap.

~

Kakashi continued on through the trees. Soon he turned around when he couldn't find any trace
of the missing bird. He was told to take the letter and see if the document is worthy of the
Hokage's time. His one eye quickly scanned the area that blurred around him. His hair push back
from the speed he was running. Though most probably wouldn't see anything at the speed he was
going, Kakashi could see perfectly fine.

Though he was looking for the missing sparrow, his thoughts were on his students, or student. He
has noticed the change in Sakura since her fight in the exams awhile back. She seemed more
stubborn in her training and harder on herself when she cant complete a task that even Naruto
could do. She knew, though that he had more stamina, but she doesn't care. ‘Like I thought,
stubborn.' A phantom of a smile pasted by his hidden features.

Though this new change has help out the team and he too noticed the difference in attitude in
both her and Sasuke when together, he cant help but feel somewhat saddened. Sakura was still
cheerful, but sometimes, he noticed, they were somewhat forced. Like something had been
plaguing her. He did hear about the mission her parents took, but didn't think that as the cause.
Ninja's are accustom to take on missions that are high ranked.

Kakashi sighed and stopped on a large branch near the center of the forest. He rubbed his thumb
and forefinger along the slope of his nose. This thinking was hurting his head. All he knew was
that if something to strong approached Sakura emotionally, he doesn't think she might take it.
‘She already tries to hard with training, especially with jujitsu training, even though she does
have a knack for it.'

Soon he got up and swiftly, without sound, continued his search of the stray bird.

~

Sasuke followed his instinct and continued going east. He mentally sighed, ‘what a stupid
mission.' He slowed down but did not stop completely. He too were plagued with thoughts of his
teammate Sakura. He was one of the first that noticed her different behavior the past month of so.
He respected her for taking in consideration the importance of training rather than him. Though
he did miss the attention somewhat,

‘Yeah right, I should be happy that she finally got of my back.' Even with that thought he still
felt the slight prick in his heart at how cold he used to act towards her. He never knew how hard
he was on her until she stopped jumping at every chance to be with him. She hardly
acknowledged him anymore, except the few times where her old self shown through.

He smirked, ‘yeah I kind of do miss some of the attention, at the very least I can say that she isn't
annoying anymore.' He sped up some more and soon stopped by a large oak tree. He quickly
reached up and pulled down an injured sparrow with a small message wrapped around its leg.
Again he smirked and left to the meeting place, but first sent out the call that the bird was found
with the message.

~

Sakura yelped as the squirrel squirmed and scurried around her lap before it jumped off and
headed towards a hole within the bark of the tree.

"Darn, thought that was the stupid bird." she whispered. Her head shot up as she heard to short
whistles penetrated the air. She smiled at the notice of the capture and made her way towards the
designated spot to meet after a completed mission. Before she even jumped from her position on
the tree, she clutched her head in sudden agony as another burst of pain shot through her skull.

‘What's going on!?' she continued to grab her head, as her hands threaded through her pink hair.
She let out a soft gasp as she fell, once again. This time though she felt the impact of the ground
on her back and the pain of the sudden force of the air pushing out of her lungs. Slowly she
closed her eyes in an attempt to ward off the pain, there she fell unconscious.
