Naruto Fan Fiction ❯ Fenrir and the Fox ❯ An Odd Twist to an Old Story ( Chapter 1 )
[ Y - Young Adult: Not suitable for readers under 16 ]
Author's Note: This is the first time I have ever attempted to write a Naruto Fan Fiction and there will be some slight differences from the other fics. For one thing, aside from some jutsus such as the chidori or the resengen, the jutsus in this fic will all be in English and will largely original. The reason for this is because I don't know Japanese and won't even pretend I do. However, if someone is willing to do some translations then they should contact me. I will use the suffixes at the end of the names when I can help it and if there are some errors feel free to tell me and I will do my best to correct them. With those things being said, enjoy!
Disclaimer: I don't own Naruto. If I did there would be some serious changes; this story is proof of that.
Chapter 1:
An odd twist to an old story
“It's been an unusually quiet night, hasn't it Kakashi-san?”
“In what way do you mean Hokage-sama?”
A small smile played across the third hokage's wrinkled face as he gazed outside of the window. It had been raining hard for the past few hours, and it showed no signs of letting up. “It's just that there always seems to be something that disturbs the peace. The last time I remember a night this quiet was the same night that the Kyuubi chose to attack over seven years ago. Since then I've always believed that nights like these were destined to be disturbed. I must admit, I'm almost curious as to what surprises tonight may hold.”
The silver haired jounin looked at the Hokage with a mixture of surprise and horror stealthily hidden beneath the mask that covered his face. “Hokage-sama, surely you aren't thinking that we're going to experience another attack!”
The Third turned his gaze away from the window and back towards the man standing on the other side of his office desk. “Not all surprises are unpleasant ones Kakashi-san. I'm not sure why, but something tells me that something extremely fortunate is going to happen.”
A flash of lightening illuminated the sky, causing something to suddenly come into focus on the outside of the window that the Hokage might have otherwise missed. Kakashi noticed it as well, and soon the two of them were seen gazing out the window at what was unmistakably a small huddled human form sitting on a nearby roof.
“What the hell is a kid doing on a roof in the middle of a storm?” The shock, although not visible on his face, rung clear in his voice.
“I'm not sure, but we can't let him stay out there. Get an ANBU team to bring him here now!”
“I'll handle it personally Hokage-sama.” With that the jounin disappeared in a puff of smoke, well on his way to the soaked and shivering form on the roof.
Break
Tonight just wasn't Jinra's night. He had just arrived in Konoha earlier that day and in that time he had been turned away from every motel, hotel, and shelter in town. He had even been kicked out of the park. They said something about it being needed as a training ground for the genin to practice in. It seemed like a reasonable excuse, but there was something cold in the man's eyes that told him that had he been any other child he would have been a bit more sympathetic. After all, he was only seven years old! Was this really how they treated the children in this village!
As near as he could tell, everything seemed to go south the moment that the person actually looked into his eyes. He wasn't sure what it was that was freaking everyone out; there was nothing special about his eyes. Sure, maybe they were a little unique, but everyone's eyes seemed unique to someone else.
“Stupid villagers,” he muttered under his breath.
The only place he could find to rest was the roof of some random house he had come across. He hadn't been sitting there more than a few minutes before it had started to rain harder than he had ever seen in his young life. Muttering the few curse words he knew, Jinra pulled his jacket over his head and prayed for the rain to stop.
His prayers for the rain to stop seemed futile. He had been sitting out in the rain for what felt like hours and he was now drenched the bone despite his jacket. The only thing he was thankful for in this situation was the fact that the rain was oddly warm for this time of year, so it was likely that he wouldn't freeze to death. With the water coming down the way it was it was more likely he would drown.
His thoughts were interrupted by a small muffled sound about a foot to his right, accompanied by a large puff of smoke. Jinra was a bit curious about this new occurrence. The amount of smoke was too small to be from a smoke bomb, and much to large and appeared to fast to be from a small fire. He watched the smoke intently as it dissipated and was surprised to see the figure of a man standing in the middle of it. He was pretty tall and appeared to be somewhere in his late twenties if Jinra had to hazard a guess. His clothes were entirely black save for a bulky dark green vest. His face was the most curious thing of all, the lower half of his face was covered by a thin black mask and one of his eyes was covered the slanted forehead protected that he wore and his hair was silver and appeared to stick straight up into the air. The one eye Jinra could see appeared to be examining him closely.
Kakashi took a moment to evaluate the child that sat huddled before him. He had no way of knowing the child's age but he would guess that he had to be no older than about seven or eight judging by his size and physical development. His cloths were a little worn, though not by much, indicating that the kid was most likely on his own but had not been so for very long. Kakashi couldn't see very much of the boy's face because of the mid length silver hair that had been plastered to his face by the rain. He couldn't be sure because of the way the boy's fangs shadowed his eyes, but it appeared the boy was staring at him intently, as if waiting for him to make a move.
Kakashi mentally shrugged and decided it might be best if he spoke first. “What are you doing out here? You'll get sick if you stay out in the rain.”
The boy muttered something that was too soft for him to hear. “What did you say kid?”
“I said there wasn't any other place to go.”
“I can take you someplace warm if you'd like, but I won't force you to go.”
“Where are you going to take me?”
“We're going to see the Hokage. If anyone can help you try and find a place to stay, it'll be him. So, are you interested?” As he said those words the jounin held out his hand.
Jinra looked at the hand. He knew he had very little to lose by trusting this guy. After all, he seemed nice enough.
Why not? He thought. Maybe the Hokage can help me. I'll just have to be careful not to show him my eyes; for some reason they seem to make everyone afraid.
Jinra grasped the man's hand and was quickly hauled onto his feet. “Hold on kid,” was the only thing he heard before his vision was obscured by a large cloud of smoke, and the world seemed to be ripped away from him.
Break
The Third Hokage sat at his desk and waited for his two guests to arrive. He had been watching the window and saw the two of them disappear, meaning that they were due to arrive any second now.
True to his thought, a puff of smoke suddenly erupted in the center of his office announcing the arrival of the infamous copy ninja Kakashi Hatake and a small silver haired boy. The boy looked to be about Naruto's age, which meant that he was probably just old enough to be enrolled in the ninja academy. The old man smiled as he thought about Naruto, but now was hardly the time to be entertaining idle thoughts.
The Hokage stood up from his chair and walked towards the boy at a leisurely pace. As he approached he could not help but note that the boy never looked into his eyes, keeping his head slightly lowered so his bangs shadowed the upper half of his face.
“What's your name, little boy?”
“Jinra.”
“Okay Jinra, what were you doing on that roof. This isn't exactly the best weather for a little boy to be outside in.”
“I didn't have a choice,” he said in a slightly sad and bitter tone.
“What do you mean?”
“Everyone in this town turned me away. They wouldn't let me sleep in the hotels, the park or even the street. The only place I could find where nobody would shoo me away was the rooftops, which was okay before it started raining.”
“Why would they turn you away like that?”
“I don't know…”
The Hokage took a few more steps forward until he was standing in front of the boy and then knelt down until they were at about eye level. Seeming to notice this, the boy titled his head down a little further, directly avoiding eye contact. “Why won't you let us see your eyes?”
Jinra's body tensed when the Hokage said those words, but thankfully no one seemed to notice. “I think they scare people. I don't want them to scare anyone else.”
“I'm the Hokage, Jinra. There's very little on this earth that can frighten me.”
The boy seemed to fidget a little, as if deciding what he should do, before finally muttering in a voice that the Hokage could barely hear, “Promise?”
The old man could not help but smile, “I promise.”
Slowly the boy raised his head and met the Hokage's gaze with his own, and what the old man saw was nothing like what he had expected. The boy's eyes were unlike anything he had ever seen before. In his life time he had seem black eyes, blue eyes, green eyes and even white eyes, but the eyes that this boy seemed to possess were something different all together. The irises of the boy's eyes were the most luminous color of silver that he had ever seen. They seemed to draw him into what could only he described as a sort of hypnotic trance. Nothing human was supposed to have eyes like this, yet here the boy was, standing right in front of him.
He was snapped out of his trance by the voice of a concerned Kakashi. “Hokage-sama? Is everything all right?”
The Hokage mentally shook his head clear of the trance that he had been in and turned his attention away from the boy. “Yes. Everything is fine, Kakashi-san.”
Jinra released a breath that he was unaware he had been holding. The man had looked straight in to his eyes and wasn't afraid. That meant that he had finally found someone he could trust. Inside of his own mind he began to leap for joy in excitement. The only indication of his relief was the small smile that had crept onto his face.
“What are we going to do with him, Hokage-sama? If what the boy says is true, then there isn't any place we can put him at this late hour.”
“I am well aware of that Kakashi-san, which is why I'll be taking Jinra to my home for the night. Then we can find more suitable living arrangements for him tomorrow morning. Is that okay with you Jinra?” Jinra gave a broad grin at the old man before nodding vigorously. “Thank you, Hokage-sama.”
“No thanks are necessary. Now come, we have to make out way back to the Hokage Mansion so we can get you situated. It is already quite late and I'm sure you are very tired.”
“Yes Hokage-sama.”
Kakashi watched as the Hokage led the small boy out the door to his office and towards his own home. Well, the Hokage said that we had a surprise in store for us tonight, he thought. It really makes me wonder what we should expect from that boy.
