Disclaimer: Does anyone know where we can buy a Neji keychain? Since we don't own the series they're kinda hard to find.
By no means and under no terms would Hinata ever call herself a genius. Actually, it was more likely that she'd spend an hour or more talking about how great of a ninja Uzumaki Naruto and her elder cousin Hyuuga Neji were. If asked about her own talent with the Byakogan, she would probably speak of her severely limited skills and might even mention that her younger sister, Hanabi, was much more skilled. Upon meeting the scion of the Hyuuga Main House one would think that such answers were only proof of modesty; how she wished that were true.
When, during the Chuunin Selection Exams, Neji had said that she was too nice, he had been correct, but being too nice did not impair one's ability to be a ninja. If anything it gave one more zeal with which to protect important people. That which impaired her ability as a ninja was a complete lack of faith in herself and her skills. Being unsupported by her father and treated cruelly by Neji had only served to cripple her more. She was reclusive and gave up easily, submitting to the will of others, but during her preliminary match of the Chuunin exam, it was the faith of one she often watched and dearly admired that gave her the strength to begin to change herself.
The Chuunin Selection Exams brought about many changes in Hinata's life. Though her father still detested her lack of ability, her cousin Neji had done the unexpected and offered to help her continue her training while his fellow teammate, Rock Lee, was in the hospital recovering. They had not been given the chance to train, however, until long after the Exams had ended, due to problems caused by Orochimaru and his Sound Nins. They trained now, though it was more of Neji instructing her on what to do, for he was still nursing injuries spawning from the mission to retrieve Sasuke, which had gone terribly; himself and Akimichi Chouji being only on the brink of life when the paramedics had gotten to their aid.
She concentrated the chakra in her eyes once more and activated the Byakogan, staring intently at Neji's resting frame, trying desperately to identify the tenketsu that she knew were just below the surface. Just as she was beginning to see something, she felt the presence of another person behind her. She spun her vision around, though her eyes did not follow the movement.
"You needn't have broken concentration, Hinata-sama." Neji's emotionless words were followed the by the loud sound of something falling heavily and profuse swearing.
After a moment of rustling and a great deal more swearing, the figure of Nara Kaida appeared from the brush, leaves and twigs still stuck to her in places she wouldn't think to brush off. One arm in a sling and the other futilely trying to brush away the debris she could not see, Kaida appeared to them. Hinata watched as the older girl's brow knit in frustration over the length of her bandaged eyes and she stepped forward shyly, placing a hand on the forehead protector that ran lengthwise along Kaida's lower arm. Once she was helped over the tangle of roots she released the arm and stood back.
"W-what happened to your arm, Kaida-sempai? Did you sprain it training?" Hinata shyly held out a small jar of ointment of the same batch that had served Naruto in the preliminaries. A blush spread over the visible part of the girl's face and Hinata thought that she saw her head turn just the slightest bit away from where Neji sat.
"Uh... Um... No. I broke it falling down the stairs." She turned her head away quickly. "But I... Uhh... Really must be going, my father wanted to see me about something, he's just on the other side of the training grounds, sorry to bother you." The scion of the Nara Clan took off without leaving an opening for answers..
Turning, Hinata saw Neji shake his head and then look away when he felt her half trained gaze on him. He waved a hand at her and she once again activated her Byakogan.

The sun was just beginning to set when Neji called a halt to her training, claiming to be weak from his injuries. Though she knew it was just a facade he was using to protect her from straining herself, she said nothing. The changes that had occurred within Neji were too complete for him to be compared to what he had been before. He was still strong and determined, but now he was more caring and compassionate, his hate for the Main House all but forgotten. Though he was more willing to speak of himself and his doings, Hinata could not help but note that the subject of his pre-exam fight with Kaida was taboo with him. Given everything else, however, she was not going to press the issue; it was none of her business in any case.
He walked her to the gates of the main house, but then left again, heading back into the village once she had closed the gates behind her. She gave him a curious look, but let the thought drift from her mind. She heard heavy breathing. Turning her head and instantly activating the Byakogan, she looked through the walls of her manor, before matching the sound to her younger sister, Hanabi, who was training with their father. A small sigh escaped Hinata as she continued on through the house towards her rooms. Maybe once she was more skilled, her father would acknowledge her again.
She believed that was the true motive behind Neji's training her, brought around by his change of heart. He must have been able to see through his hate to know that she felt no animosity and actually a great deal of respect towards him. She smiled at the mere thought. Naruto had been the cause of the change, proving to Neji that he could change his own destiny. Even more than that, Naruto had proved his own worth in front of hundreds of onlookers from countless cities. People saw him as he was now, not just as the dropout failure that he had been before.
She blushed prettily and tried to clear her mind, mentally going over the training she had done today. Neji had said it would help her to remember and to focus more accurately the next time. Giving a spare thought, she once again thanked his change and then concentrated her whole being on that day. If she tried hard enough, she would be able to change.

Sorry for the honorifics in this, even though there weren't any in chapter 1. There was just no way to explain the relative relationships between Hinata and Neji without them, and I thought it was important. There WILL be honorifics in all following chapters. Hehe, Neji and Hinata are hard to write... -sigh- Thanks to Setkatsu for beta-ing (read her story) and Mercury Moon for reviewing (join her rp forum).
