"Iruka-sensei! Iruka-sensei! Welcome back!" Genma looked up as cheers broke out through the room.
"Quiet! Sitdown and do your reading assignments, Iruka isn't your teacher yet. I'm still in charge...who want's to play escape the monsters?" Genma almost smiled as the kids quieted down instantly, except for one.
"You can't make us do that Iruka-sensei's here!" The girl stood up up for herself, good for her, but misplaced...
"Midori-chan, I can do what ever I want, this is still my official assignment for the week, even of Iruka is the usual teacher he had a different assignment and can't interfere. You have thirty seconds to sit down before the entire class will have to go out and run laps...your fault, of course."
Midori sat down and shut up, she glared at her book.
"Iruka, I'll talk with you in the hall." Genma let the chair come down on all four legs and joined Iruka in the hall, leaving a Bunshin to watch the kids, more to make sure that they didn't listen at the door.
"Stopping by for a visit before filing your report? Or are you here to replace me?" Genma asked leaning against the wall, he hoped it was the later and not the former.
"Just stopping by, checking to see how they faired in my absence. I'm gonna file and go home to sleep." Iruka yawned, causing Genma to see how tired he was...
"Ah well, I'm going to go get a cup of coffee, would you mind watching them?" Genma offered coming up with a petty fiction so that the kids could go wild and hug the stuffing out of their beloved Iruka-sensei without his having to order then to sit-down. Genma sauntered down the hall taking his time. He was looking forward to the weekend he'd be mission free unless an emergency popped up, it was the unspoken rule for mission assignment. If you double shifted for five straight days then you had the next two days off, usually it was the weekend with half the double shifts being at a regular post like substituting, standing guard on the Hokage, visiting nobles, etc.
He found the break room deserted and pulled a mug that was reserved for visiting substitutes off the shelf to pour himself a cup. Ah after standing guard he could go home and sleep for a week. Genma pulled the needle out of his mouth and raised the coffee mug taking a sip. It would be cooler if he could eat and drink around the ever present needle, but like Kakashi he'd had to compromise on that and take it out, at least he didn't have to go someplace else or create a distraction to eat or drink. Dribbling food and drink on yourself was not cool.
Genma stretched his back and heard it pop, desk jobs sucked, he couldn't wait for another field mission to arrive. He maybe 'old' but he wasn't desk material neither was Raido, at least they didn't look like they were thirty-plus. The proof being Raido's current assignment in the field. Genma decided if he was gone longer his ploy would be seen through by the children, so he walked back to his class room, slamming the door open he caught all of them out of their seats.
"Sit down! Iruka how could you let them behave this wildly? Any one still standing in 30 seconds will have to run 100 laps around the training field." With a whoosh of sound, clattering, and scooting everyone was seated. "The reports that you assigned are over there, and there are the assignments and assessments for the students." Genma added a twinkle in his eye.
"Ah thank you Genma." Iruka collected the piles and put them into his knapsack for student work to be corrected. He waited until Genma turned and waved at the children, "See you on Monday have a nice weekend."
"Oh, they will indeed I've assigned extra homework." Genma announced, the children's faces fell.
~
"Homework for this weekend, pair up and practice throwing kunai at still objects from varied distance, throw one at a time watching the other person, make an assessment on what you think your partner is doing right or wrong, there will be a practical skills test in kunai throwing on Monday, and a follow-up test on Friday for improvement with a focus on individual help and assessments from the teacher during the week."
Genma watched amused as the children's expression became one of relief, it was 'enjoyable homework' in most of their opinions, something that they would have done anyways except the partner and paper. "This is a sheet with terms to be used in your evaluation of your partner, it will give you an idea of how the grading process works and if you don't understand something, it will give you a chance to get an explanation before the teacher asks you to do something. I'd suggest that you all practice after class, raise you hand if you have a partner. I need to write down the pairing and make sure everyone is assigned."
"Okay, everyone is partnered up. There will be no reading assignments. You may leave." The children stayed seated, there was still five minutes before they were regularly dismissed despite Iruka-sensei letting them out early occasionally, this wasn't Iruka, it was Shiranui-sensei...
"Or if you are going to remain I can assign more homework..." Genma trailed off as the class bolted for the door pushing and shoving to get away. Well the week hadn't sucked. Genma straightened the teacher's area stuck his discarded needles in his needle holder; he turned off the lights and shut the door free, for a few hours at least. No more brats! He thought he'd go get something to eat perhaps.
~
"Genma!" Kotetsu waved frantically as he saw Genma standing in front of a shop.
"Kotetsu," Genma thought to himself that it figures that the one time that he wanted to get something to eat he couldn't, the important word was want. Well that shows him, huh?
"I have a special message from the Godaime to have you go to her office." Kotetsu was official report, assignment deliverer for a month; until the job rotated again he worked only at the Hokage headquarters.
"Let’s go," Genma reached into his pocket as he headed up the street through the fall crowd of shoppers. If he was being called to talk to the Godaime personally maybe that means there was a big mission headed his way.
Kotetsu wished that he'd caught Genma a few minutes later as his friend pulled out a ration bar and pealed back the wrapper. Then at least he'd have had a decent meal under his belt, well Raido was due back to night, he shouldn't be too far behind Iruka seeing as they had a joint mission.
They walked silently through the city. In city which celebrated, there were always those with heavy thoughts, there was never a time when everyone was happy or when each one mourned.
