Slow footsteps echoed through the empty establishment. The boy felt a small hand on his shoulder. "Going home, Naruto?" asked a female's voice. The blonde-haired boy turned around, facing her, and he smiled before nodding.

"Yeah, I've got to get up early tomorrow." He told her. The small girl raised an eyebrow.

Her arm fell from his shoulder. "How come?" she asked. "I mean, it's not like you've got to work or anything." She stated. Naruto shrugged his shoulders.

"Eh, I've got to meet with my probation officer." He muttered. The girl sighed, and shook her head at the blonde before placing her hands on her hips. Naruto gave her an odd look. "What?"

"You need to keep yourself out of trouble." She told him, in a manner showing she was very concerned about the boy.

Naruto only laughed and waved a hand at her. "That's the reason I'm going to see my probation officer; to stay out of trouble. Don't worry so much Aya, I'll be fine." He told her, smiling reassuringly. The small girl only nodded, and smiled. Naruto then told her that he had to get going, so they bid their farewells, and went their separate ways.

The blonde boy headed out of the small bank, where he worked. It was dark outside, by now. Naruto looked up into the night sky, which was covered in dark clouds. The buildings here reached up far into the sky, towering over the city. They were all empty, as were many of the establishments at this time of night. It was well around eleven, and no one in their right mind would be walking around downtown at this time of night

Naruto made his way towards the barren parking lot. There were only two cars here; his and Aya's. His shift was over for tonight, and hers had just begun. He walked towards his small car, and unlocked the doors so that he could get inside. Once in the car, he started the engine, and pulled out of the parking lot. As he started driving, he saw that the streets were empty as well. As stated before, no one would be downtown at this time of night.

While driving, Naruto heard his car start to make a sputtering noise. He sighed to himself when he realized that that would mean he would have to stop for gas. He hated stopping to get gas; the place was just all too tempting. Nevertheless, Naruto kept his hands on the wheel, and he continued to drive until he saw a gas station. There was a Sunoco on the street he drove down, and he pulled into it. The place was utterly deserted.

The boy got out of the car, and pulled his wallet out of his pocket. He swiped his credit card through the machine, and then removed the gasoline nozzle from the holster before he inserted into the cars tank. The numbers on the gauge started to roll slowly, and Naruto sighed. He tried not to breathe in the smell...but in the end, all efforts were futile. The smell of gasoline infiltrated his nostrils, and he inhaled deeply, savoring the scent that made his blood race. And as if time sped up, Naruto's tank became full. He removed the nozzle from the tank, but before placing it in the holster again, he watched the oily brown liquid drip from it. His mind reeled with all the possibilities...

"...No." he told himself, before he hurried to return the nozzle. He closed the hatch on his car, and then jumped in without a second's lapse. He started the engine again, and pulled off. The entire time, he stayed silent. The only thing that could be heard was the gentle hum of the engine, and the sloshing sound of gasoline. But, it wasn't the fuel in his tank...it was the container in his trunk. His eyes widened, he'd forgotten it was even there.

Oh, the possibilities...

Naruto bit down on his lips, as he shook his head. "...I can't...I promised I wouldn't...can't." he muttered to himself, still shaking his head. He pressed his foot against the gas pedal; he wanted to get home. He knew that Aya's shift was only two hours tonight, and she would close up after that. And then she would be home, and she would talk him through this, and she would stop his behavior, and everything would be okay.

The smell invaded his senses again, and Naruto inhaled, his hands twitching as he did. Without even thinking, he turned left when he knew he should've gone right. Left would lead to nothing, no road...just woods. Just the place Naruto wanted to be...

He was driving so fast that he soon reached the edge of the woods, and this was where he abandoned his car. The blonde jumped out, and went to the back of his car, opening the trunk. He let out a satisfied breath when he laid eyes on the red container, which was filled with gasoline. He grabbed it, slammed the trunk down, and then started walking into the forest.

"...last time...this is the last time..." he said to himself as he bit his bottom lip. By now, he was drawing blood, and he didn't even know it.

The woods were silent, not even the wind could be heard rustling through the trees. He didn't hear a thing, and he was glad, utter silence was a blessing. The boy sighed and pulled his thin jacket closed. It was getting chilly outside, and he didn't have much protection from the temperature. Though, in a moment's time, it wouldn't matter much. He wouldn't be cold soon.

Naruto walked for a good twenty minutes, until he was sure that he was away from any main roads. Without even having to think about it, he uncapped the container, and he began to sprinkle gasoline against the trees. He wanted to stop, he knew that he should've stopped, but he couldn't. He had battled with himself internally, and he had lost. His addiction was taking over.

In a matter of minutes, the canister was empty, and he threw it against one of the trees. Naruto touched his back pocket, and found matches. He always carried them, though he knew he shouldn't. It was too late now...He took one out, and let it catch fire. The flame danced on the stick, and Naruto was entranced by it. He inhaled again, and then he threw it towards the trees.

Inferno.

The trees burst into orange-red flames, reaching up into the sky, lighting it up. Naruto stared up at the blazing flames, the image of them burning into his memory. The fire hypnotized him, and he couldn't look away. In this moment, nothing else mattered, nothing but the flames. The flames lit a fire in Naruto's cold, empty heart. They made him feel again, without fire, without this intense heat, he couldn't feel...And right now, he was feeling everything that was never there. This fire made his blood race, his heartbeat quickened, he felt alive.

Suddenly, the boy began to laugh loudly. He stood here, in front of the flames that could very well engulf, and kill him, and he was laughing. This was the biggest fire that he had ever created, and he had never felt such satisfaction. Sweat rolled down his face, and he tasted in his open mouth as he laughed. But, as soon as the laughter had come, it disappeared, and turned into coughing.

He backed up into another tree, one that was not near the flames, and dissolved into chokes and coughs. He covered his mouth, and grabbed at his neck as his throat convulsed. Tears were coming down his eyes, which were burning from the fumes. He now realized that it was becoming difficult to breathe...this was getting out of hand...Naruto came back to his senses. He stared at the flames that were swallowing the forest, and he grimaced. What had he done?

The sound of sirens could be heard in the distance. Naruto's coughing didn't cease, and he could feel his throat becoming dry. He fell to the ground, holding his chest as he cried and coughed. He could not breathe, therefore he could not move. He was completely immobile, and this heat was becoming unbearable. Though the sounds of sirens drew closer, Naruto was becoming father away...his vision was becoming spotted. His chest could not find air. The flames danced before him, as he slipped into unconsciousness.

The fire blazed.
