Chapter one: Konoha Psychiatric Hospital

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

This all started off simple, not even a flicker of a problem, something so small that no one would take time out of their daily life to look twice at it. It had began innocently, though, as innocent as it could have possibly been. Though, over time, the innocence of the acts had grown darker, and then disappeared completely. It was now, a full blown crisis.

Uzumaki Naruto was seated in the back of a not-so-tidy, yellow cab. The carpeting was filthy, spots of grime everywhere. Foreign papers littered the floor, along with beer caps, cans, and what looked to Naruto like…a retainer? Disgusting. The driver, who looked rather shady, had been previously paid to take the teen to his current destination. The blonde-haired boy leaned back into the seat, and stared at the lock on the door to his right. He could all too easily open the door, and escape this vehicle. Of course, if he were to do that, he would ruin his chances of ever being truly free.

The engine of the rusty old cab sputtered audibly as it continued on the road. In the distance, Naruto could see that the paved road would soon turn to dirt. He sighed inwardly; the place where he was headed had to be in the middle of nowhere if it was off the main roads.

The city scenery had long before changed into simple buildings appearing here and there, but more trees than anything. Naruto could no longer see large corporate buildings, skyscrapers, and professional looking people. No, now all he could see was this wretched dirt road before him, which was littered with overgrown, beastly trees, whose limbs twisted and contorted into unshapely and rather awkward positions.

A cloud of dust gathered behind the cab as it drove through the dirt. Naruto could no longer see any road behind him, only brown smog, a mixture of the dirt cloud, and the polluted exhaust coming out of the car. For some reason, just looking at it made Naruto want to hold his breath.

The speed at which the driver was going had slowed. Naruto looked out into the distance, and in doing so, he felt his stomach turn inside him. He saw the large, brick building that stood before him. It was enormous, and the blonde boy felt just the slightest bit intimidated by its size. Upon getting closer, Naruto noticed more of the buildings feature. Firstly, there was a large black gate surrounding it. The windows on the building were barred from the outside, and the door leading into the building was metal. Even from afar, it looked heavy. And one last thing, the one thing that made Naruto cringe, the name of this building.

Konoha Psychiatric Hospital.

The driver stopped, parking directly in front of the stairs leading right up to that metal door.

Naruto heard the cab driver grunt. "Good luck, kid." He grumbled. The boy only nodded, not finding his voice for there was a lump in his throat. He exited the cab, and the driver sped off hastily. Naruto couldn't blame him; this place was creepy.

The boy stalked up they grey cement stairs. He counted them; there were six. He walked up to the metal door, and realized that he had to buzz to get in. He pressed the button on the intercom. A woman's voice rang out.

"Name please." she stated. Naruto gulped nervously, pulling at the collar of his shirt.

"Uzumaki…Uzumaki Naruto."

Another buzz could be heard, this time, coming from the door. Naruto pulled it open, and he realized that his assumptions had been correct; this metal door was indeed heavy.

Upon stepping inside this massive building, Naruto's eyes widened significantly. The inside was huge as well, high ceilings, long halls, the whole nine yards. The only thing that made Naruto a little uneasy was the fact that this place seemed so sterile. The walls were white, the floor tiles were checkered white and light-grey, and every door he could see was also white. Everything seemed a little too clean…

"Uzumaki Naruto?"

The blonde's snapped to attention when he heard his name being called. Standing a few feet in front of him was a young, black-haired woman. She was small, thin, and about Naruto's height. Her height was normal for a woman, but Naruto was a guy, so his small stature was slightly unnatural.

"Yeah." He answered. The woman flashed him a small smile, and waved her hand in the other direction.

"I am Shizune, please follow me." Without another word, she began to walk, and Naruto followed her. She went straight down the hall, walking past many hallways. Naruto saw about four doors in each hallway, and he wondered just who was staying there. In a short amount of time, they arrived at a small oak door; the only door with color. It was in its own hallway, nowhere near the other doors. Shizune opened the door for Naruto, and the blonde walked inside the room. She didn't follow him inside.

This room did not intrigue Naruto, though; it was way more…lively then the rest of the building. It was the typical shrink's room. Hundreds of books littering the shelves that were built into the walls, a couch where the patient would lie and spill out their secrets, and a large desk at which the shrink sat, analyzing every word the patient said. In this case, the Psychiatrist was a blonde, busty, intelligent looking woman. He remembered her name from the first time they'd met; Sanin Tsunade.

"Please Naruto, take a seat." She offered, pointing towards that couch. Naruto winced when he laid eyes on it, but he sat down regardless of that. The woman opened a drawer in her desk, and pulled out a manila folder. Naruto couldn't see it, but he was sure that his name was on that folder. She opened the file, and let her eyes roam over the first sheet of paper. After giving it the once-over, she glanced up at Naruto.

"Are you aware of what you have been diagnosed with?" she questioned.

The boy nodded quickly, averting her gaze. "Yes." He stated, cringing at hearing the word 'diagnosed'. Tsunade pushed her glasses father up onto the bridge of her nose.

"Pyromania is a serious disorder," She told him. "And an even more serious criminal offense." Naruto sighed inwardly. If he had to hear the words 'criminal offense' one more time today, he was going to snap. "I want you to remember that you are here to get healthy. I know that this institution was your last resort, right before imprisonment. So, I want you to know that my staff and I only want what's best for you, as we do all our other patients."

Naruto nodded. "Of course."

The woman inhaled deeply before she closed Naruto's file, and returned it to her desk drawer. "When you leave this room, Shizune will escort you to your quarters. Your clothes and belongings have already been delivered there, and you have already been assigned a room mate. Remember, this is not a punishment, and this place is not a prison. We are here to help you get better."

As if on cue, the door opened and Shizune stood in the hallway, beckoning for Naruto to come out. He nodded to Tsunade politely, before standing up and walking clear out of her room. Just like that, the scene went from Shrink to Sterile.

He followed Shizune towards those same hallways from before. This time, they stopped and turned onto one. Shizune opened the door wide, and then plastered a smile on her face.

"Hello Shikamaru." She said. Naruto peeked into the room, and noticed that there was a boy inside, lounging on a bed, and staring up at the ceiling. "This is your new room mate, Uzumaki Naruto." She lightly pushed Naruto into the room. Shikamaru sat up, as if to examine the boy.

"Shikamaru Nara, it's a pleasure." He muttered, before lying back down again.

Naruto nodded. "Same here." Naruto turned to look at Shizune, but by the time he'd looked for her she was already gone. The blonde shrugged his shoulders, and then went over towards the bed that he was sure belonged to him. His bags leaned against its frame, and boxes of his things sat on top of the white sheets. He moved the boxes to the floor, figuring he'd put his belongings away some time later.

He glanced over at Shikamaru briefly, taking time to really get a good look at the boy. His brown hair was tied back into a ponytail, which was unusually spiky. He was thin, though, still looked rather strong, in a way. His eyes were narrow, and his mouth seemed to be permanently shaped into a thin line…Naruto wondered what he was here for.

"So…what brings you here?" the brunette asked, as if he had been reading Naruto's mind.

The blonde's breath hitched, at the thought of his condition. A strange excitement bubbled in his chest. "Pyromania." He stated, almost with pride. "You?" Shikamaru shrugged his shoulders.

"I'm narcoleptic." He told Naruto. He must've noticed the look of confusion on the blonde's face, because he began to explain. "Basically, I fall asleep unwillingly, and at random…it's really…troublesome…" suddenly, the boy's voice trailed off. Naruto lifted his head further to take a look at his roommate, to see why he'd stopped talking. Surprisingly, Naruto saw that Shikamaru had fallen asleep, without warning, just like that.

"…narcoleptic, huh?" the blonde muttered. What an odd condition…though…wasn't his own odd as well? Naruto sighed and stood from the bed. Since his room mate was obviously in dispose, he figured he'd unpack his things. It wasn't like he had anything better to do…and besides…he felt like this was going to be a very, long day.

~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~

It's safe to say that Naruto was a feeling a little skeptical right now. He's been sitting in this room ever since he'd arrived at this place. That had been earlier this morning, and Naruto was sure that it was around six, or maybe even seven in the afternoon. Outside the door he could hear many voices, though, to bee quite honest, he was afraid to leave. He wasn't sure that he wanted to meet any of the people who lived here. Were they unstable? Or, were they seemingly normal, like his narcoleptic roommate?

The boy sighed and lay back onto his mattress. His eyes roamed around his new room, though; there wasn't much to look at. The walls were painted white, not surprisingly. The carpeting was grey, and it almost looked white too. There were two beds, covered in white sheets, two oak dressers, and two wooden desks. There was one window, though; it was had to see out of, considering the fact that there were bars on the outside, and metal netting on the inside.

The only thing that was semi-exciting in this room, were the posters and pictures on the wall that Shikamaru had placed on his side of the room. One poster was a picture of the sky, with clouds. Nothing more, just clouds. Naruto found that odd. Another was of the band Linkin Park, and then the last poster was had a picture of an owl, with the word "Orly?" at the top. That one made Naruto laugh. From his side of the room, he couldn't get a good look at the small pictures on Shikamaru's wall. The boy assumed that they were of family members, or maybe friends, that Shikamaru had outside this place.

Suddenly, the door opened up. Naruto jumped, startled by the sudden sound. Standing in the doorway was Shikamaru, who had left the room only a few minutes earlier. He stared at Naruto with a dull expression on his face. "It's time for dinner."

"What?" Naruto said, looking a little confused. Shikamaru eyed him suspiciously.

"What are you, deaf? Dinner, now." He told him.

The blonde jumped up from the bed. "Oh." He mumbled. He followed Shikamaru out of the room, after closing the room's door. Naruto was a bit nervous about eating with these people, he didn't know what to expect from them. To be honest, he actually would feel more comfortable in jail. He'd a least been there before.

The two boys soon approached a very large room. There was one long, white table in the middle of the room, where Naruto saw about three other people sitting. "So...these are the other patients, huh?" he thought to himself. Closest to him, were two boys, who looked to be his age. One of them had shaggy, unruly brown hair, and red tattoos on his face. For some strange reason, he stared blankly out of the barred windows, while covering his mouth tightly with both hands. Then, there was a pale eyed girl sitting across from that boy. Her hair covered most of her face, and she stared down at her lap, silent, not saying a word. At the very end of the table, there was another girl...or guy, Naruto really couldn't tell. She or he had long black hair, and light brown eyes. They were also silent, staring down at the table.

Shikamaru noticed Naruto's interest in the patients. "Kiba, Hinata, and Haku." The brunette told him. Naruto raised an eyebrow at the last name.

"Haku?" he questioned, realizing that that was a boy's name. He looked down at that person again, and realized that he really looked just like a girl.

The Nara shrugged his shoulder and sat down at the table "Gender Identity Disorder." Naruto's eyes widened, before he sat down, making sure he was close to Shikamaru.

"...Oh..."

A few minutes passed, and Naruto wasn't surprised to see more people file into the room that was obviously the cafeteria. Four guys came in, followed by one girl. Naruto felt a little silly, when he realized that all these people looked normal...and then he wondered just what was going on inside their minds.

"Good evening everyone!" came a cheerful voice. Naruto visibly jumped, and Shikamaru noticed that, rolling his eyes. It was Shizune, and she was rolling a cart into the cafeteria, with what looked to be their dinner on it. "We have a new guest today." Her eyes landed on Naruto "Stand up and introduce yourself please."

Suddenly, the blonde felt like he was back in school again, being made to do a get-to-know-me exercise in class. He sighed, and stood up while rubbing the back of his head nervously. That lump was in his throat again, but he just swallowed, and spoke. "Uh...I'm Naruto Uzumaki...I'm nineteen...and uh...I'm a...pyromaniac."

"...that m-means you like to st-start fires, right?"

Naruto looked around, to see that the person talking to him was the boy that Shikamaru had identified as Kiba. The blonde nodded his head. "Yeah." The brunette nodded, and held his hand out to Naruto.

"Inuzuka Kiba." Naruto shook his hand. "I have t-t-tourette syndrome." He told him. Naruto sat down, feeling a little bit more welcome now that someone had spoken to him. From across the table, Naruto heard someone scoff rudely.

"Pyromaniac, huh? Make sure you don't set the place on fire and kill us all, blondie."

The boy looked around for the source of that insult, and when he found it, his eyes widened. At the end of the table, close to that Haku person, sat a smug looking, pale boy. He had black spiky hair which, to Naruto, looked like the back of a ducks ass. His eyes were coal black, cold, dead. Naruto rolled his eyes.

"Huh, you'll be the first person I decide to set aflame, smartass."

The entire mood in the room changed, as all eyes shifted towards Naruto. What? He was just retaliating to an insult. Though, the blonde had a feeling that they were looking at him for a whole different reason.

"You...you don't have the right to speak to me like that." the black haired boy spat out, as he narrowed his eyes, and glared at Naruto. The boy grabbed the table, and grinded his teeth as he began rocking back and forth, and brought his hand up to his head, gripping tightly. "No one, talks back to me!!" he screamed; the sound of his voice made Naruto jump. He watched the boy bang his fist against the table, right before he stood up. "YOU!-"

Shizune slammed her palm against the table. "-take your seat Sasuke. Right now." She ordered. The pale boy glared at her, before he rolled his eyes, and took his seat. Naruto raised an eyebrow. "...wow..." he thought to himself. The boy, who Naruto now knew as Sasuke, did not speak again. He didn't even look Naruto's way. The blonde felt an elbow nudge his side.

"It'd be wise not to talk to him...if you value the small amount of sanity you have left."

Shizune began to serve their dinner, setting the plates, and utensils in front of them. They were having mashed potatoes, peas, and turkey slices, drenched in gravy. Soft foods...huh...wonder why. Naruto noticed that all of their eating utensils were plastic, and the plates were made of Styrofoam. He sighed; this place was literally too safe. Though he wasn't very hungry, he ate anyway, to keep up appearances. He didn't want them thinking he had eating problems too; he wanted no reason to prolong his stay here.

"So, Naruto, who's your r-roommate?" asked Kiba, as he stuffed a forkful of food into his mouth. Naruto too ate, before answering.

"Shikamaru." He told him. "What about you?" he asked. Kiba shifted in his seat a little, before motioning over towards a boy at the end of the table. "Gaara." Naruto glanced over, to get a better look at the aforementioned boy. He sat at the table, his head hung low. His hair was an amazingly vibrant red, and Naruto wondered what color his eyes were; they were closed, he couldn't see them. The boy was slowly rocking back and forth, seemingly muttering to himself, because no one responded to whatever he was saying.

"What's his deal?" the blonde asked, in a whisper; he didn't really want to anyone to hear him.

Kiba sighed. "H-He's s-schizophrenic." The brunette stated, as he visibly twitched, Naruto only nodded as a response, and pretended not to notice Kiba's twitching. He decided to finish the rest of his dinner; he wanted to retreat back to his room. He'd had enough of this place for one day. So, as he finished eating, he disposed of his plate and utensils. He sighed, and walked over to Shizune, who was leaning against the wall, watching every one of them.

"Um, Shizune, is it alright if I go back to my room? I'm feeling tired." he asked her. The young woman smiled politely, and then reached down under the cart she'd been rolling. She came up with a smile white cup.

"Of course. Right after you take these; they're sleeping pills." She placed the cup in his hands. Naruto looked into it, and saw that there were two rather large white pills in there. He shook his head and attempted to hand it back to her.

"I don't need these; I can sleep without them-"

"-are we going to have a problem, Uzumaki-kun?" she asked, with that same smile on her face. "You will take the medication, no questions asked. Of you don't take it, we will have a problem. I'm sure that you would not want to cause trouble."

Naruto gulped, and then without another word, he took the pills out and swallowed them both. Shizune nodded, and kept smiling. She asked him to open his mouth, and show her that he'd really swallowed them. Afterward, he quickly made his way back to his own hallway, and into his room. As soon as he was inside, he closed the door, and leaned against it, sliding down slowly.

He closed his eyes, and let out a long sigh. "...what the hell have I gotten myself into...?"

This place was apparently, full of crazies. Naruto did not belong here. He knew he didn't belong here. He hated it. He wanted to go home...but then he remembered...that there was no home to go back to. "Look at where you landed yourself Uzumaki. This is what you get for fucking up, and getting caught."

Suddenly, the blonde felt a wave of dizziness come over him, and he gripped his head in order to stop the spinning. He stood up from the floor, and walked over to his bed, climbing in without even taking his clothes off first. He felt weak, like his body was giving out on him. Those sleeping pills were already beginning to take effect. Naruto lied down on his stomach, and led his eyelids slide down. He fell asleep, with the thought of tomorrow on his mind.
