Chapter Two: The Loony Bin
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
Naruto turned over onto his stomach, tossing and turning through his restless state. His eyes were shut tight; he didn't want to open him. He didn't want to face the reality of his whereabouts. Maybe if he kept his eyes closed, he'd be home again...wherever home was. He could see his old apartment in his mind, Aya was there waiting for him, smiling, welcoming him home. He felt happy, happy to be where he belonged-
"Oi, Uzumaki."
The blonde's eyes shot open, upon hearing his name being called. The memory of his old life disappeared, and he sighed, wishing that the memory had been real. He looked over towards the door, and he saw Shikamaru standing there. The brunette yawned, and gave Naruto a bored look.
"You can't stay in bed all day, you know." He stated. Naruto lifted a questioning eyebrow, and Shikamaru sighed. "It's eleven. You already missed breakfast."
Without another word, Shikamaru left the doorway, and closed the door behind him. The boy groaned in dismay; Consequences?? Wasn't being here consequence enough? He rolled over onto his back, and let his eyes wander over to the window. Of course, he couldn't see out of it clearly, but what he could see, was that it was raining.
"Great. Yet another thing to depress me." He mumbled to himself, before sitting up. He yawned and stretched his arms up into the air. He blinked a few times before running his fingers through his hair quickly. Suddenly, the door to his room opened again, startling him and making him jump. Don't people know how to knock??
"Uzumaki-kun. Good, you're awake." Shizune said to Naruto as she stood in the doorway. "You need to get dressed before noon. Please bring clothes with you, and meet me in the next hallway over." With that said, the young woman smiled and closed the door. Naruto sighed, and shook his head slowly as he stood up from bed. He walked over to the dresser where his clothes were kept. He pulled out a black shirt, and a pair of loose blue jeans. He went into the top drawer, and grabbed a pair of boxers and socks too. He closed both drawers, and then walked over to the door, opening it and walking out.
Upon exiting the room, he saw that his hallway was not empty. He saw a boy sitting on the floor, staring up at the ceiling. He had long, brown hair, and pale eyes. He reminded Naruto of the quiet girl, Hinata. When the boy noticed that Naruto was looking at him, he lowered his eyes and let his hair fall in front of his eyes, as if to shield himself from the blonde's gaze. Naruto stopped staring, and he quickly walked past the boy. He left his hallway, and took a right, to meet Shizune in the next. Though, as soon as he reached the hallway, he was surprised, and quite miffed, when he saw that guy from yesterday; Sasuke. Naruto rolled his eyes as he walked, and he could swear that that boy was smirking. The raven took a drag from the cigarette he was smoking, and as soon as Naruto was about to pass him, he blew the smoke into his face. Naruto accidentally inhaled, and began to cough.
Sasuke smirked. "Hey, blondie." Naruto coughed and glared at the rude boy.
"What the hell man?! I should-"
"-Uzumaki-kun!"
Both boys turned at the sound of Shizune's voice thundering through the hallway. Shizune was standing next to a doorway with her hands on her hips, and an accusing look on her face. Naruto looked over at Sasuke, and sneered.
"Bastard." He muttered before walking off. "What is his problem?? Seriously, I know he's crazy or whatever, but jeez! I haven't done anything to the guy!" Naruto thought as he quickly made his way to where Shizune was standing. The woman handed Naruto a large, white towel and a smaller one as well. She motioned for him to walk into the small bathroom.
"Since your condition was confirmed as stabilized, you're allowed to use one of the private bathrooms." She told him, as she pushed him inside. "You've got ten minutes alone, and if you're not done within the time limit, you will be penalized, and demoted to the shared bathrooms. Do not go over the time limit." The woman stepped away from the door, and closed it without saying anything else. Naruto scratched his head; he was beginning to think that Shizune was a very scary woman.
Heeding her words, Naruto set his clothes and towel down on the small table near the wall. He turned on the water, and quickly undressed. Once he stepped into the shower, the water was piping hot, but it didn't bother him in the least. He dipped his head under the scorching water, and let it run through his hair, and down his face. Naruto inhaled deeply, and placed a palm on the wall of the shower, closing his eyes.
His mind was racing, with thoughts of his situation. He did not want to be in this place, not at all. But, he would have to stay here if he didn't want to go to jail. The night that caused this whole mess replayed in Naruto's head over and over again, and he realized how stupid he'd been, and how he'd let this disorder get the best of him. He could still feel the heat, the way his throat had burned while inhaling the smoke. What had he been thinking?
"I wasn't thinking at all...that's the problem." He muttered under his breath. With a sigh, the boy grabbed the small towel and the bar of soap to his right before he began to wash himself. He did it quickly, remembering the fact that he had a time limit. He rinsed the soap off his body before shutting off the water, and reaching out to grab his towel from the table. He stepped out of the shower, and toweled his hair dry, before drying his body. Afterward, he hurriedly got dressed in his cotton-black shirt, and loose jeans. He gathered his pajamas, and underclothes, then opened the bathroom door and walked into the hallway. Thankfully, it was empty this time.
Naruto went back to his room, which was empty, and disposed of his clothes and towel, putting them in the laundry hamper. He glanced at the small digital clock on Shikamaru's nightstand, and saw that it was only eleven thirty. The boy suddenly decided against staying in this room, and so he walked out. He sighed while walking down the empty halls, his footsteps echoing loudly. Soon, he came to a small room where he saw most of the patients were. It was like a gathering room; there were two couches, a few chairs, a table, and a television.
Most of the patients were watching TV, but at the table, Naruto saw that Haku was sitting with Shikamaru, while playing checkers. Naruto decided t sit down on the couch, where no one was seated. He looked around the room, and glanced at all the people whose names he'd learned; Shikamaru, Kiba, Haku, Hinata and Gaara. There were several other people, whose names he'd not yet learned, like the boy with the long hair, and pale eyes, or the really skinny girl with pink hair.
"...you're the new kid, eh?" Naruto looked up to see a boy standing in front of him. He had short, black hair, ghostly pale skin, and dark eyes. He reminded Naruto of Sasuke...unfortunately. The boy took a drag from his cigarette, and blew smoke into the air before speaking again. "I'm Sai. What's your name again; I don't remember it from last night." He said.
"Naruto." The blonde told him. Sai smiled and took a seat next to Naruto, though; the blonde realized that he was too close for comfort, as their shoulders touched. "So, what's your deal?" Naruto asked. Sai smiled and shrugged his shoulders.
"I'm a pathological liar." He said. He leaned in closer to Naruto "But I wouldn't lie to you sweetie."
Suddenly, the girl with the pink hair scoffed. "Ugh, Sai, get a life and stop hitting on the new kid." She spat out. Sai narrowed his eyes at her, while a smirk appeared on his face.
"Stop being such a prick Sakura." He said, all too cheerfully. "Why don't you go fawn over Sasuke, eh?"
The girl, whose name was Sakura, rolled her eyes at Sai, and flipped him the bird before she returned to watching television. Sai turned back to Naruto, looking straight into his eyes, as if he were looking straight into his head. It made Naruto uncomfortable. "So, who's your roommate doll?" he questioned. Naruto raised an eyebrow. Doll? Really? What's with all these weird nicknames he was getting?
"...Uh, Shikamaru." He stated. "What about you?"
Sai shrugged his shoulders, and took another drag from his cigarette. Slowly, he blew smoke, aiming in it Sakura's direction. The girl stared at him angrily, but he only smiled at her. "My roommate? Why, it's none other than the bastard of all bastards himself." The boy told him. Naruto narrowed his eyes.
"Sasuke."
Sai barked out a laugh "How'd you guess?"
Suddenly, as if on cue, the bastard himself walked right into the room. Naruto tensed immediately, as if he was waiting for the boy to attack him in some way. He didn't trust Sasuke, not one bit. And to add insult to injury, the raven came walking right towards Naruto and Sai. The blonde glared at him, but Sasuke only smirked. He stopped in front of Sai, then leaned down, and kissed him. Right out of the blue, just like that! Naruto started blushing, inching away from the two of them quickly. Though, while Sasuke kissed Sai, he cut his eyes toward Naruto. The blonde had a feeling that if his mouth wasn't already occupied, he'd be smirking.
The two of them parted, and then Sasuke walked over to the other side of the room, sitting down on the couch, and turning his attention to the television like nothing at all had just happened. Naruto turned to look at Sai, who had a smug grin on his face.
"...a-are the two of you together??" he asked, disbelievingly.
Sai turned to Naruto and smiled, right before he opened his mouth, showing Naruto the small white capsules on his tongue. The blonde gasped, and Sai closed his mouth, swallowing the medication. "It's valium babe." He told him.
"So that's why he-" Sai cut him off with a nod. "...oh..."
Sai sighed, and leaned back onto the couch. "It's the only way I can get what I want around here, without being noticed." He whispered. Suddenly, Sai leaned over, and pressed his lips against Naruto's cheek softly. The blonde gasped; his lips were ice cold. "Don't narc on me, okay?" he asked sweetly. Naruto's cheeks flushed pink, and he nodded.
"...okay."
Abruptly, Sai jumped up from the couch. His eyes landed on the shy, quiet girl with the pale eyes. He waltzed over to her, and kneeled in front of the chair she was sitting in. "Hey Hinata." He said in a sweet tone as he smiled at her. "You gonna talk today, huh?" he asked. The girl didn't speak to him; she only let her hair fall into her face, and covered her mouth with her hands. Sai heaved out a sigh, and swiped her hair from her face. "Come on, just one word sweet face. Huh? For me, please-"
"-Leave her alone."
All eyes were on the person who spoke; that boy with the long brown hair, and pale eyes, just like Hinata's. He was staring directly at Sai, with an angry look in his eyes. Naruto realized that this was the first time he'd heard him speak. "She won't talk to you. She won't talk to anyone. Not you, not anyone. Not you. Leave her alone." He muttered, while rocking back and forth in his chair.
Sai stood up, placing one hand on his hip, and stroking Hinata's hair with the other. "Oh come on Neji, cool it 'kay? Don't you want your cousin to get out of here, eh? All she has to do is talk-"
"I SAID LEAVE HER ALONE!!!" he shouted. Naruto jumped, and immediately, he saw Shizune coming out of her office. She had a needle in her hand, and she sighed once she reached the boy whose name was Neji.
She stood directly in front of him, hiding the needle behind her back. "Is there a problem, Hyuga-san?" she asked, in an eerily cheerful voice. The boy, Neji, shook his head while still rocking.
"I told him. I told him. Leave Hinata alone. She won't talk. WON'T TALK!" he yelled.
Shizune immediately raised the sleeve of his shirt. "Did you take your meds this morning Neji?" she asked him, and again, he shook his head, signaling no. She sighed, and then took some type of antiseptic out of the front pocket of her white jacket. She cleaned the area she intended to use, and then, with no hesitation, she inserted the needle into his arm. Neji hadn't even tried to stop her; he just sat there, and accepted it. Once the needle was empty, Shizune put it in her pocket, and then she touched Neji's cheek, and stared into his face.
"You'll feel better, alright, Neji." She told him. The boy didn't speak to her; he only stared vacantly down at the floor. Shizune sighed, and then she immediately took her leave.
Naruto stared blankly at the boy, as Shizune walked away from him. He couldn't believe his eyes; everything had happened so quickly, and ended just as fast. The boy had to force himself to pull his eyes away, and look elsewhere. Even if he were in the loony bin, it was still impolite to stare.
"...t-they're going to put him u-under super-s-supervision now." Naruto looked over, hearing Kiba's stuttered speech as he continued his game with Shikamaru. Naruto raised a curious eyebrow.
"Under supervision? What for?" he asked.
Kiba moved one of his pawns on the board before answering. "He wasn't-wasn't taking his meds. Now he's in t-t-trouble." Suddenly, Shikamaru yawned loudly. The brunette stood up from the game board immediately, and then walked straight over to the couch where Naruto was sitting. As soon as he sat down, his eyes closed, and he was fast asleep. Kiba stared at him, and sighed.
"I-I hate it when he does that." He murmured. The boy looked over at Naruto, and raised his eyebrows. "Wanna f-finish his game?" he asked. The blonde shrugged his shoulders, and then stood from the couch. He took Shikamaru's place at the table, and then examined his pawns, seeing where he'd left them on the board. The blonde gasped when he realized Shikamaru's plan. All he had to do was move one pawn, any pawn, and Kiba would lose. That was impossible! What was he, a genius?
Naruto picked up a piece, and moved it one space. That was it. He'd won. Both Kiba and Naruto laughed. "Well, that was fun." He joked.
Kiba only shrugged, and began to put the game away. "Shikamaru's t-to smart for his own good." He sighed. "I-I don't know why I even-even bother playing with him."
"Uzumaki!" the boy's head snapped up, when he heard his name being called by Shizune's shrill voice. When she realized she had his attention, she motioned towards the long row of phone booths. "You have a phone call." She told him. Naruto immediately stood up, and walked over towards the phones. He sat down in the booth, and picked it up.
"Hello?" he answered.
"How are you?" he heard his parole officer's voice from the other line.
Naruto relaxed, and groaned as he sat back. "How do you think I am?? I can't believe you put me here!" he said in an angry whisper. The man on the other line only snorted.
"It was either this, or jail. At least your record won't be any worse than it already is." He stated. Naruto crossed his arms over his chest arrogantly.
The blonde began to speak again, this time, more irritated than before. "I swear to God Ibiki...a year?! A whole year in this place? I really am gonna be crazy if I stay!" Again, the man snorted condescendingly.
"You are crazy, Uzumaki. Starting forest fires and expecting not to get penalized for it. You need to be there, to get better. And when you get out, you won't have to worry about going back to jail, because you won't be starting anymore fires. Are we clear on that?" he asked in a menacing tone. Naruto rolled his eyes, and sighed.
"Yeah, fine." He grumbled.
Ibiki sighed loudly. "I'll call back in a few days to check up on you. Don't do anything stupid." And with that, the line clicked. Naruto exhaled loudly, and returned the phone to it's holster. The blonde raked his fingers through his hair, before sighing, and pinching the bridge of his nose. He could feel a major headache coming on...
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
"...well at least I didn't get attacked at dinner tonight." Naruto thought to himself as he stared blankly at the television set in the sitting room. He'd finished eating dinner, and he was quite thankful that Sasuke hadn't had one of his crazy outbursts tonight. He now realized that the guy probably hadn't taken his meds, though, even with the medication, he was still a bastard. He had a feeling that that would never change.
Naruto leaned his back against the pillows, and held his face in his hands, trying his best not to sigh. He'd been doing that a lot lately. He was just too stressed out, more stressed than he'd been in his normal life. He opened his eyes, and looked up, only to see that girl, Sakura, standing against the wall, smoking a cigarette. Did everyone smoke here? The blonde groaned; he was unfortunately craving one right now.
"Hey," he called over to her.
She glanced at him lazily. "What?" she asked before taking a drag of the cigarette.
"Mind giving me one of those?" he asked. She shrugged her shoulders and then came walking towards him while pulling the pack from her back pocket. As she got closer to him, Naruto noticed how thin she was. She was nothing but skin and bones, really. She handed him a cigarette, and then, she almost gave him the lighter, but he shook his head. "I'm not allowed to...I can't-"
"-oh yeah, my bad." She mumbled. Naruto closed his eyes as she lit the cigarette for him. Even though he tried to ignore it, he could still hear the fire ignite. Silently, he pushed the thought out of his mouth. He slowly inhaled, and then blew out smoke. Sakura stepped back, and stood in front of him. "So you're a pyro, huh? That's kinda hot." she teased. Naruto blushed at the comment.
"...I guess..." he murmured. Sakura suddenly came and sat next to him on the couch.
"So, how long is your sentence?" she asked. Naruto cringed at her use of the word 'sentence'. He was beginning to think that this place was a prison.
The blonde shrugged his shoulders. "A year...how long have you been here?" he questioned. Sakura continued to smoke before she answered him.
"I've been here for two years...my parents put me here...anorexia." she mumbled. "...so...that's why she's so skinny." Naruto thought to himself, before blowing smoke into the air. He watched as Sakura turned to look at him. "Who put you here?"
Naruto grimaced. "My parole officer." He grumbled. Sakura's eyes widened, like she couldn't believe what he'd said. Naruto almost laughed. "You know the big fire a few months ago?" he questioned. Sakura gasped out loud, her jaw dropping.
"You did that??" she asked, disbelievingly. Naruto only nodded, the girl tapped her finger against her cigarette, and stared at him in awe. "Wow, you look so innocent, I'd never expect something like that." She said, before laughing. "I guess looks really are deceiving."
Naruto shrugged "I guess so." He agreed.
"Sakura." Both Naruto and Sakura looked up at the sound of her name. Standing at the entrance of the room was a man that Naruto hadn't ever seen before. He was tan, and had his brown hair pulled back into a ponytail. There was a scar across the bridge of his nose, and he was wearing a white coat. It was obvious that he worked here.
The pinkette smiled "Hey Iruka, what's up?" she questioned. The tanned man, whose name was obviously Iruka, beckoned Sakura to come towards him.
"It's time to see Kakashi." He told her; Naruto's eyebrows rose.
"Kakashi, who's that?" he asked Sakura.
She stood up, and then put out her cigarette quickly. "Our therapist." And with that, she walked over to Iruka, and the two of them disappeared down a different hallway. Naruto let out a huge breath, as he sat back into the couch. His eyes traveled over to the television, and he silently wondered where the others were. Though, he wasn't complaining about the silence, it was relaxing. As he stared at the TV, he realized that he wasn't even watching whatever was on. It didn't really catch his interest.
"...there's absolutely nothing in this place that's interesting..." he thought, before running his hands through his hair slowly. It fell down into his face, but he was too lazy to swipe it out again. Suddenly, Naruto heard the sound of several sets of footsteps. He looked up to see Kiba, Shikamaru, Sai, and of course, Sasuke, walking into the room. Shikamaru Kiba and Sai came over towards Naruto, but Sasuke chose a seat on the opposite side of the room. Naruto rolled his eyes.
"Oh, you look down sweetie." Sai stated as he flopped down right next to Naruto on the couch. "Something wrong?"
The boy shook his head. "I want to get out of here." He grumbled. All three boys sighed simultaneously.
"Don't we all..." Muttered Shikamaru.
All of a sudden, the sound of heels clicking echoed through the halls. Naruto looked towards the hallway, only to see Shizune coming. She had one of those little white cups in her hands, and he already knew what was inside it. Surprisingly, her eyes were set on Naruto himself. She stopped right in front of him, holding out the cup.
"It's only a relaxant." She told him in a calm voice. "It's what you were prescribed." Naruto took the cup from her, and he sighed, knowing not to ask why. "It's like they're just shoving medication down our throats!" he thought to himself. Oddly, out of the corner of his eye, he saw Sai smirking at him. Naruto kept a straight face right before he put both pills in his mouth. He opened his mouth to show Shizune that the pills were gone, and then she smiled, satisfied, and walked away.
Naruto turned to look at Sai, and the boy still had that smirk on his face. Abruptly, he leaned over, and began to kiss Naruto. The blonde wasn't surprised in the least. And when Sai pulled away, Naruto smirked and saw the pills on the boy's tongue. Sai swallowed, and then let out a small laugh.
"Hm, I think I like you blondie."
