Chapter Three: Welcome to Hell
~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~*~
For the first time in the few days that Naruto had been staying here, he was actually sleeping peacefully...without the help of any medication. The quiet hum of the radiator in the room had long since lulled the boy to sleep. Usually, his roommate's snoring would keep him awake, but tonight, it didn't even bother him. His hallway was silent, and everything was finally, for once, going his way. He could finally relax...
Clatter...Bang...Crash
Not.
Naruto was startled out of his slumber by the sudden crash outside the room. The boy's sleep was interrupted, and once his eyes were open, he immediately took his pillow and buried his face in it. "...bloody hell..." he groaned while turning over on his side. He looked over to see that Shikamaru was still fast asleep. He hadn't stirred at all. Narcolepsy...how Naruto wished for that disorder right now...
The boy turned over and stared at that digital clock on Shikamaru's nightstand, and saw that it was seven in the morning. He groaned again. "Who in their right mind would- wait...let's not finish that sentence." Naruto thought to himself, before sighing and sitting up. It was obvious that he wasn't going to get back to sleep.
Rattle...Smash...Bash.
"...LET ME OUT!!"
Shatter.
"The hell?!" Naruto questioned aloud as he stood up, scratching his head and yawning before rushing to the door. He yanked it open, and he was downright shocked to see that every single patient was gathered in his hallway. They were all staring in the same direction, to the right. Naruto stepped out of the room, and looked in the direction that they were. He was downright stunned at what he saw.
"...GET ME OUT OF HERE!!!"
In the hallway, smashing windows, was that redhead, Kiba's roommate; Gaara. Naruto's eyes widened as he watched the boy rip away the metal netting, which had already scraped up his hands beyond reason. He punched a hole through a window, destroying the glass, and his own fist in the process. He was going completely insane...or rather, he was already insane, and just having a major breakdown. Suddenly, Naruto felt a hand on his shoulder. He turned to see Sai standing next to him.
"Oh, don't look so surprised." He muttered before sighing. "This happens all the time...that kid is completely unstable. Never takes his meds."
Before Naruto could open his mouth and ask Sai why someone wasn't doing anything, three men came out of a different hallway, and they literally tackled the redhead. He kept screaming at the top of his lungs, cursing, yelling for them to let him go, to let him see his mother. But before this could go any further, of course, Shizune appeared holding a straitjacket, and her infamous needle. The three men forced Gaara into the jacket; right after Shizune had stuck him with the needle. They had to damn near wrestle with the boy to get him to be still. In the end, they ended up carrying him away, straitjacket and all.
Naruto let out the breath that he'd been holding the entire time. "Well...there's someone I won't mess with." He thought to himself before rubbing his eyes and blinking a few times. "...what the hell just happened..." he muttered, looking over at Sai, who still had his hand on his shoulder.
The boy gave Naruto's shoulder a light squeeze. "You just witnessed a major mental breakdown." Naruto shook his head, before yawning, and rubbing the back of his head sleepily.
"...so, can I go back to bed now?" he muttered. Suddenly, a very smug smile slid across Sai's face. He snaked his arm around Naruto's waist, and without warning, kissed the blonde's cheek.
"That depends." He whispered. "Can I come with you?"
Naruto's face immediately burst into flames as he mentally shied away from Sai. "A-Are you flirting with me??" he questioned, disbelievingly.
Sai smiled innocently. "Isn't it obvious?"
"You're unbelievable, Sai."
Both boys, Naruto and Sai, turned at the sound of a third voice. On the other side of the hallway, stood Sasuke, looking as smug and stoic as usual. Naruto rolled his eyes at him, while Sai only laughed lightly, before moving even closer to Naruto.
"What? Jealous much?" he teased.
Sasuke smirked, and turned his head haughtily. "Che, whatever." Sai shook Naruto back and forth excitedly.
"Look at him! He's so cute, ne?" he exclaimed. Sasuke's eyebrows rose in curiosity, as his eyes roamed over Naruto, giving him the once over. He shrugged his shoulders.
"...Hn."
"Hello! I am standing here, y'know!" Naruto thought to himself, while absentmindedly crossing his arms over his chest. There were two guys, totally checking him out right now. This was way beyond awkward. The blonde slowly slipped out of Sai's reach, and sighed. "Yeah, I'm gonna go back to bed now." He mumbled, eyeing both Sai and Sasuke suspiciously, before darting back into the room, and closing the door. He cursed this place for not having locks on doors.
Naruto walked over to his bed, and then flopped onto it with a sigh. Was it just him, or was Sasuke's behavior really strange? First of all, the first thing he'd done when he'd met Naruto was yelling at him, and then he'd almost attacked him. Then, he annoyed the blonde to no ends with his arrogant behavior. Now, he was checking him out. Were his moods really screwy, or what? It was at this point, that Naruto remembered exactly where he was. "Wait...isn't there some type of disorder for like, crazy mood swings...ummm...shit, I can't think of the name. But I'm sure he's got it!"
The boy sighed, and then he looked around his room. It wasn't like anything had changed in here, at the least. Though, Naruto looked over on his dresser, and he noticed a small blue envelope on top of it. He got up and grabbed it, opening quickly. Inside, there was a small key, and a note attached to it that said: Key to private bathroom. Naruto, who was thankful that he now had a key to the bathroom, decided to have a shower to fully wake himself up. He quickly grabbed some clothes from his drawers, and then walked out of the room. He silently thanked God that the hallway was empty. There was no one to check him out, nor were there any schizophrenic redheads breaking windows. It was silent, good.
He hurriedly made his way to the hallway where the bathrooms were, and walked to the one that Shizune had let him into last time. He had a feeling that she would somehow be monitoring his time, so he had it in mind no to go over her set time limit; ten minutes. God, this place was turning more and more into a prison every single day. The blonde wasted no time getting cleaned up, and dressed. Once he was finished, he of course, dropped his clothes back off in his room.
Surprisingly, when he went back to the room, Shikamaru wasn't there anymore. Naruto had been beginning to think that the guy was going to sleep the day away. I mean, he actually had an excuse to do something of that sort. Though, when Naruto looked at the time, he saw that it was nearing eight o'clock. He knew that it was time for breakfast, and despite the fact that he would've rather stayed in the room, his stomach growled insistently.
So, Naruto left the room once again, and went straight towards the cafeteria. There weren't many people here yet, just Shikamaru, Kiba and that Neji guy. Naruto sat down next to Kiba, and realized that he and Shikamaru had been holding a conversation.
"...I c-can't believe Gaara flipped out like th-that earlier." The brunette said to Shikamaru. The older boy yawned.
"What triggered it this time?" he asked, lazily.
Kiba only shrugged his shoulders and sighed. "He was t-talking to "Shukaku" again." He stated. Naruto's eyebrows rose in curiosity.
"Who's Shukaku??" he blurted out. Both Kiba and Shikamaru looked over at him, and the both of them sighed simultaneously. Shikamaru was the first to speak.
"One of the voices in his head." He told the blonde. "He's got two of them; Shukaku, and 'Mother'." He said.
"And wh-when Shukaku talks...well...Gaara gets out of h-hand." said Kiba. The boy rubbed the back of his neck, and shook his head. "But when 'Mother' talks, Gaara is th-the calmest person ever...I wish she would talk to h-him more often..." he said with an exasperated laugh. Naruto suddenly realized that it must be hell for Kiba to have a roommate like that. The blonde wondered if there were any private rooms here, and if there were, why they didn't just give Gaara his own room. "...he'd probably try to hurt himself..." he thought.
Their conversation dwindled away, once more people filed into the small room, and breakfast was served; eggs, Sausage links, and toast. Naruto would kill for some ramen right about now. That was another reason he wanted out of this place:
They. Did. Not. Serve. Ramen.
He was sure that if he didn't go insane first, he'd die from ramen deprivation. Uzumaki Naruto without ramen; what a tragedy.
"Hey, kid." The blonde looked up, hearing a call that was obviously directed towards him. He looked up and saw that boy, the really pretty one. If Naruto remembered correctly, his name was Haku. "Why do you look like your dog just died?"
Naruto laughed lightly before shaking his head. "Nah, I was just thinking about some stuff." He stated. Haku smiled at him, his hair falling across his chest. Naruto had now realized just how long his hair was, and how much he really looked like a girl. He was really pretty.
"Mind if I sit?" he asked. Naruto shook his head, and motioned towards the seat right next to him. Haku turned to look at him, staring right into his face before he smiled. "You know something, Sai was right; you are cute."
Naruto blushed, and groaned lightly. "What is it with him??" he whined. Haku let out a soft laugh before shaking his head.
"Sai is very...affectionate. Don't take it too personally...well...unless he kissed you..." he told the blonde. Naruto blushed again.
"...He kissed me."
Haku raised an eyebrow. "Now you can take it personally." Naruto forced out a nervous laugh. Great. He was being hit on in an asylum, what were the odds of that?
All of a sudden, Haku stopped talking, right as Gaara walked into the room, and sat down across from him. Without even speaking, the redhead reached into his pocket, and pulled out a cigarette, handing it to Haku. The long-haired boy lit the cigarette, and when Naruto saw the flame shoot out of the lighter, his stomach muscles lurched.
"Mhm, Gaara, did you meet the new kid?" Haku questioned. Gaara's eyes, which Naruto noticed were a very unique color, darted over to him. A glint of interest sparked behind his gaze, before he spoke.
"I didn't catch your name." he muttered.
The blonde smiled nervously. "Naruto...Uzumaki Naruto." Gaara nodded, before turning to his breakfast. He prodded it with the plastic fork in his hand.
"Hn. Welcome to hell, Uzumaki Naruto."
Naruto silently gulped; that wasn't really a welcoming that he wanted. He picked up his fork, and began to attempt to eat his breakfast. Though, all the while he ate, he couldn't help but stare at the bandages that covered Gaara's hands. The blood was showing through; he must've really done some serious damage this morning. Naruto suspected that whatever Shizune had injected him with, had calmed him down severely, because he seemed like a normal person right now, not the lunatic he'd seen earlier. Ah, the wonders of medication.
Also, Naruto couldn't keep from examining Gaara's hair. It was so, lively, and vibrant. He was surprised that Gaara didn't have freckles or something, like any other redhead he'd met. Oddly enough, Gaara's skin was completely flawless; it didn't look real. Everything about the boy's face was almost perfect, like someone had created his face. In fact, he realized, Gaara was downright gorgeous.
After forcing down breakfast, Naruto automatically felt like purging it all back up. He had a distinct craving for his favorite food right now, and that craving wasn't being fulfilled. Anything other than ramen, right now, was making his stomach turn...he wondered if they'd classify him as bulimic if he made himself sick.
"Hey, you look a little green, babe." Naruto felt a cool hand on his forehead "Feeling sick?" he looked up to see none other than Sai standing beside him. Where'd he come from? Naruto hadn't even noticed his arrival. "You alright?"
"Yeah." The blonde nodded "I'm fine." He lied. In all actuality, he felt sick, and he had a feeling it wasn't because of breakfast. He couldn't tell what it was, but something just didn't feel right. He decided to shrug it off; he could just be making a big deal out of a simple stomachache. But before the boy could even come to a conclusion about what was wrong, he was snatched up from his seat, and dragged right out of the room. Sai had him by the arm, dragging him along.
"Um...why?" was the only thing Naruto could manage to say.
Sai only smiled, and led the blonde into the sitting room. "Because I want you to watch TV with me." He said, as if that were a legit reason to drag a person away like this. Once they walked into the room, Sai made Naruto sit down on the couch beside him, and when he did, the black-haired boy laid his head on Naruto's shoulder. The blonde raised an eyebrow.
"You know...you're becoming very possessive of me..." he muttered. Sai smiled, and continued to watch the television. Naruto didn't recognize the program that was showing.
"...I'm a sociopath." He told Naruto casually. The blonde blinked a few times before speaking.
"You told me you were only a pathological liar." He said.
Sai shrugged his shoulders. "I lied." He confessed. Naruto looked down at the boy leaning against him. So, he was a pathological liar and a sociopath...huh...he had some serious issues. Nevertheless, Naruto felt somewhat attached to him already. He felt like he could trust him, even if he was a pathological liar.
It took only a few minutes for the others to enter the room. And of course, as always, Shizune sat inside her small office, watching over them through the glass windows, just like a hawk. Was it safe to say that Naruto was a little scared of her? I mean...she had to be pretty darn tough to have been working here all this time. And to deal with what she dealt with on the daily basis...well, she must've been a strong person, mentally and physically.
All of a sudden, Naruto felt Sai nudge him in his side. He glanced down at him, only to see that there was a smug smile on his face. "Don't look now, but, I think the bastard is checking you out." Naruto only rolled his eyes, and sighed.
"...again? What's with him, anyway? One minute it's like he wants to kill me, then he's checking me out." The boy grumbled in an irritated manner.
Sai stifled a laugh. "...he's always angry when he doesn't take his meds. He's got...anger issues...and he's bipolar...that guy's a loose cannon." Sai told him in a low voice, though calmly, like talking about someone's disorders was an everyday thing...okay, well, for Sai, it was an everyday thing. "I think he likes you..."
"No way." Naruto protested. "You have got to be kidding me."
The dark haired boy sat up, still smiling at Naruto. "Nope, I'm not kidding. I think he likes you...then again...who wouldn't like you? You're hot."
"Uzumaki-kun!" Naruto heard Shizune's voice calling him. He looked towards her, and she motioned towards the phone booths. "You have a phone call." The boy stood up quickly, walking towards the phone. He hoped it was Ibiki again, so he could give that old geezer a piece of his mind; Or at least try to.
Naruto walked to the booth, and then sat down before picking up the phone. "Hello?" he answered. The line was silent for several seconds, but then, a female's voice spoke.
"Naruto..." the blonde's eyes widened. He hadn't spoken to her in three months. "Aya..." he thought to himself. He hadn't thought the girl would call him, not since he'd started that fire, gotten sent to jail for three months, and then sent to a psychiatric hospital. Naruto took a deep breath before speaking.
"...Aya...wow, um...how are you?" he asked her, because he couldn't find anything else to say.
He heard the girl scoff bitterly. "How am I? Oh, I'm fine, despite the fact that Channel Fifteen news is at my door every single day, asking about my stepbrother, the fire-starting psychopath that I haven't seen in months." She spat. Naruto didn't speak, he could already tell that she was angry and he just continued to let her vent.
"I've been worried about you, Naruto. No one would tell me where you were, whether you were in jail, or somewhere else. I couldn't get a hold of Morino for the longest, not until yesterday night when he finally decided to tell me where you were! You didn't call, and I've been worried sick! And after that stupid stunt you pulled, I shouldn't even want to speak to you anymore! How could you do something like that Naruto?! What were you thinking!! If you were planning something like that, you should've told me, I would've taken you home, I would've stopped you!"
"Aya-"
"-No! You and I both know that when you get those thoughts, that you're supposed to call me. I was always there to help you, but no, you didn't ask for my help, and you set a whole fucking forest on fire. Why Naruto...why?"
The blonde ran a hand across his face, sighing heavily. How was he supposed to answer that, really? There was really no way to explain himself. "Aya...I know what I did was stupid, I know. I wasn't thinking. I...I'm sick Aya, my mind...pyromania. When I come back, I'll be better, I'll be healthy. I won't ever do this again..." he told her. On the other line, her breathing sounded ragged...Naruto realized she was crying...
"That's what you said last time, Naruto. And I...I don't know if I believe you anymore. I...when you come back, I'm not sure if I'll be waiting for you."
Click.
The line went dead. Naruto closed his eyes, and returned the phone to the holster. He really felt like dirt, right about now. He knew that Aya was hurt, and that just tore him up inside. Everything she'd said was true; she had always been there for him, always helping. And the one time that he could've called, the one time that would've saved him from all of this, he hadn't called. No, he just let his addiction control him, and landed himself in a place like this.
Naruto knew that Aya only wanted what was best for him, and staying out of trouble was what was best. He prayed to God that she would forgive him of his own stupidity, because he couldn't handle life without her. Though blood never bound them together, they were sister and brother, Aya was family. Naruto couldn't bear to let her down anymore than he'd already had.

"I wonder...what'll happen if I get caught..."
Naruto crossed his arms over his chest, and sighed as he roamed the halls. He hadn't taken the sleeping pills, of course. Though, right now, he was wishing that he had. He didn't want to be awake, and yet, he couldn't sleep. He just couldn't stop thinking, and it'd kept him up. The blonde had found no point in staying in his room, lying there trying to find sleep that obviously wasn't coming. And to make matters worse, he was seriously craving a cigarette, hoping that if he got one, it would calm his nerves.
"...this is just ridiculous...it's already three in the morning." He whispered to himself as he stopped, and leaned against a wall.
Everyone else had gone to sleep around ten o'clock, and Naruto, being the defiant brat that he was, hadn't even considered taking the pills. He's pretended to swallow them, and then slipped them to Sai. The black-haired boy hadn't taken them himself, but Naruto suspected that he had a secret stash somewhere in his room.
The blonde walked past the sitting room, and straight towards the entrance of the building. That large metal door was barred shut, locks and all. Naruto raised an eyebrow; wasn't that a fire hazard? He sighed, and walked towards the small window next to the door. He looked outside, and stared past the bars, and metal netting, trying to stare into the night sky. It was dark out, almost pitch black since there were no street lights here. The only illumination considered of the bright moon, and tiny stars shining down onto earth. The boy envied those stars...they were free, bound by nothing, while he was stuck here in this prison of a hospital.
"Hn, breaking the rules, are we?"
Oh, Great.
Naruto turned around, only to see none other than Uchiha Sasuke standing a few feet away from him. In his mouth, he had the very thing Naruto had been craving; a cigarette. "Oh, it would be him!" the boy thought to himself as he turned to face the boy.
"Yeah, breaking rules, it's what I do." Naruto mumbled. He sighed, and then looked up at Sasuke. "You wouldn't happen to have another cigarette, would you?" he asked, using every bit of his strength to simply talk to the bastard. Sasuke reached into his back pocket, and handed Naruto a cigarette. And obviously, he new the blonde wasn't allowed to have lighters in his possession, so he lit it for him. Naruto was surprised to see how civil the raven was acting...he wondered how long it would last.
Sasuke blew smoke into the air, and then tapped his cigarette, sending the ashes onto the ground. "I suppose I should apologize for the way I acted when you arrived here." He said. Naruto's eyes widened and his mouth hung open. Was he serious? Or was he just playing a game to make Naruto angry? "I wasn't on my meds. Sorry if I startled you."
"You didn't startle me." The blonde said, right off the bat. "I just...thought you were kinda...well...-"
"-Crazy?" Sasuke cut in. Naruto was glad it was so dark, because he really didn't want the raven to see the blush on his face. "Well...I guess you could say I'm crazy, I've heard it all before."
"Doesn't it offend you? I mean...when people call me crazy, I get a little pissed." The blonde confessed.
Sasuke scoffed, and shook his head. "I've been here so long...that I could care less what people call me anymore." He said. Naruto didn't know exactly what to say to that, so he just kept quiet. He took a drag from the cigarette, sighing as he blew smoke into the air. He was calmer now, but still, he wasn't going to be able to sleep, which sucked. Suddenly, Naruto saw Sasuke going into his pocket, and he pulled something out. Naruto raised an eyebrow, not knowing what he was doing.
"Here." He said, outstretching his hand to the blonde. "You should sleep." Naruto held out his palm, and in it, Sasuke dropped two sleeping pills. Naruto almost smiled...almost. "Sleep tight blondie."
The raven immediately took his leave, turning his back on Naruto and walking back towards his own room. Naruto stood there, holding the capsules in his hand as he watched the boy walk away. Maybe Sai was right...maybe he did like him...
