Chapter Eighteen: Meet Your Newest Member

In the morning when Aya woke up she was shaking and sweat was pouring down

her body and soaking her clothes as she looked around.

Not my tent she realized shakily as she got to her feet and stumbled outside.

She looked around at the clearing in confusion wondering where everyone was. Slowly

the memories of the previous night and day crept into her mind, dropping her to her

knees once more. He’s gone she told herself, forcing the information down harshly.

That seemed to pull her together enough to notice the two bodies wrapped up in cloth

and set to the side of the campsite. They’d have to take those back when the others

returned from the mission Aya knew as she stared at them. Realizing that looking at the

wrapped bodies made her feel even worse Aya looked about the clearing frantically

trying to focus on something else. What she found was Lee who was meditating at the

moment and probably didn’t even know she was awake. Since she didn’t want to

disturb him Aya stood soundlessly and slipped out of the campsite making her way to

the river.

When she got to the river she sat on the bank for a while just staring into the

water. What she saw, in her opinion was less than flattering. Her eyes were red-rimmed

and swollen, her cheeks puffy, and her hair was a mess. She looked a wreck Aya

thought to herself with disgust. This had to stop somewhere she decided and it was

stopping now. Getting to her feet Aya walked back to the camp where she found Lee

still meditating. Careful not to wake him she slipped inside the tent that they were

sharing and found her bag. After digging out some fresh clothes and toiletries she

slipped back out of the tent and went back down to the river.

As she cleaned herself up Aya thought about Neji, and thinking she began to get

angry. Stupid humans, she berated herself, their weak and useless. In her mind

besides Sakura, Lee, Sasuke, and Naruto all other humans were weak. As she got out

and dressed herself, pulling up her hair in it’s customary tight ponytail Aya decided that

messing with anymore humans was just stupid. Walking back to the camp she put her

dirty clothes away and came out and looked around as quietly as possible. When she

found the plate that Lee had wrapped up for her last night she sat down and began

eating.

When Lee finally finished meditating he opened his eyes to find Aya looking

neat, clean, and eating cold food. He watched as she frowned over her food and

wondered if she was feeling ok.

“Aya are you ok?” Lee asked arching a brow at her.

“Fine,” she said as she continued eating her cold food. She figured she’d have to

get some blood after this since this was probably not going to give her much

sustenance.

“Look I’m really. . .,” Lee began as he continued to watch Aya eat the food but

then he stopped. He didn’t think apologizing was an appropriate way to fix what had

happened but didn’t really know what else to do. Aya looked up from her food and

frowned at him in confusion before she realized that he’d been ready to apologize.

“Look Lee it’s not your fault,” Aya said with a shrug, “humans are weak and

useless. Not meant as an insult but its just a fact. I pretty much think you, Sakura,

Sasuke, and Naruto are the strongest humans I’ve ever met. But I think besides you

four I’ve had enough with trusting humans for the rest of my life. Considering I’ll

probably outlive all of you I’d say that’s as done as a person can get wouldn’t you?” Aya

stuffed more food into her mouth as Lee stared at her slack-jawed and in shock.

“Aya you can’t be serious right?” He asked slowly. “I mean just because you lost

Neji you shouldn’t think that the entire human population is weak. Aya only shrugged

and continued eating her food. This argument continued for four days with Aya unwilling

to budge a inch in her decision to never get close to another human besides her four

friends.

“Look Lee give it a rest,” Aya said the fourth night they’d been waiting for the rest

of the team to get back. They sat eating fish and continuing their debate. “Humans are

useless and weak, that’s my mind set and there’s nothing you can do to change that. I

still believe that you, Sakura, Sasuke, and Naruto aren’t weak; isn’t that enough?”

“Glad to know we’re not like the rest of the population,” a voice said behind Aya

that had her turning around. The speaker was Sasuke and Aya simply smirked at him

and pointed to the extra fish that were still grilling on the fire. The rest of the team

quickly made their way to the fire and sat down. Everyone helped themselves and

began eating the fish with their hands the minute they could hold them. Aya frowned at

the lack of manners but didn’ comment, they all looked too tired to care about manners

anyway she decided.

“Report?” She asked Christie instead. Christie looked up and cleared her throat.

“An in and out job just like you said,” Christie answered with her mouth full. “It

was all a bunch of thugs who had taken over,” she continued as she finished her first

fish bones and all. “There wasn’t even a ninja anywhere around there.”

“Probably because he’s lying over there all wrapped up like a Christmas turkey,”

Aya said with a smirk as Christie grabbed her second piece of fish. Christie only nodded

in agreement as she and the rest of the team continued to stuff their faces. Deciding

that she’d have a little blood to top off her meal Aya got to her feet and looked around

at her team.

“Get to bed early,” she told them in her usual mission voice, “we leave at first

light.” With that Aya turned and left, melting quickly into the darkness. No one else saw

Aya for the rest of the night, she was just there in the morning barking orders to get up

and break camp. Everyone tumbled out of their tents disheveled and groaning while to

their amazement Aya looked as neat and fresh as a new, minted penny. After a quick

breakfast which Aya didn’t participate in saying she’d already had her’s camp was

broken in half an hour and they began the trek home.

Aya drove them hard, making them walk until they reached a clearing that they

should have stopped at the first night they had begun their mission.

“We should reach home within two hours walk tomorrow,” Aya told them over

dinner. Everyone only groaned in answer. Except for Christie everyone complained over

sore muscles and tired feet. Aya frowned at them thinking maybe she had pushed too

hard. They’d only stopped once throughout the entire journey back and that was for

lunch. Admittedly Aya had only let them stop for half an hour and she was feeling kind

of bad. When everyone finished their meal and went to bed Aya made a split decision

and found herself a nice tree to sleep in. When she woke up the next morning she was

dripping in sweat, dreams of Neji having haunted her all night. Only natural she told

herself as she climbed down from the tree and cleaned herself up. She gathered food

and water for her team and woke them a little after noon.

Everyone was surprised to see the meal that had been prepared for them and

tucked in heartily. As they ate everyone chatted happily.

“Just think tonight we’ll be able to sleep in our own beds tonight,” Sakura said

happily, giving her two lovers a sultry wink. Aya shook her head gagging.

“Get a room,” she said teasingly.

“Well that’s what we have to get home for,” Sasuke said with a grin causing

everyone but Naruto and Sakura to groan. Chuckling everyone broke camp and they all

set off for Konoha. Just as Aya said they made it back in two hours. They all stumbled

into their house branching off and going to their own rooms. Aya made her way to the

room she shared with Neji heavily. They’d left the bodies in the livingroom downstairs

so that they could take them to the Hokage when they made their report, after everyone

had cleaned up that is. Since Aya hadn’t even broken a sweat when she got up to her

room she began meticulously removing everything of Neji’s in the room and putting it in

a box. When she was finished she stuffed the box in their shared closet. Her closet now

Aya thought as she pushed the box all the way in the back and shut the door.

Wiping a hand over her face Aya glanced at the clock and decided her team had,

had plenty of time to clean up. She went downstairs and stood in the livingroom waiting

for them to come down. She didn’t have to wait long, the team assembled almost five

minutes after she’d been waiting. Looking at each of them Aya nodded and they

collected the bodies and left to see the Hokage.

When they got their they laid the bodies at the fifth Hokage’s feet and Aya told

them what had happened up to where Christie had taken over, leaving nothing out

including her breakdown and the conversation with Lee. Then Christie took over and

told about the actual mission. It had taken about an hour to relate their tale and when

they were finished the Hokage had the bodies removed so that they could be taken

care of properly and she also gave a few other orders as well that the team didn’t catch.

“I’m pleased that the mission was a success,” Tsunade, the fifth Hokage said

looking the team over. “Since you have lost one of your members I am having him

replaced.” Aya frowned shaking her head.

“That really isn’t necessary Tsunade-Sama,” Aya said, trying hard not to frown.

“I believe it is needed,” Tsunade said with a shrug, “he’s new in the village and

he’s a powerful fighter.” When Tsunade saw Aya beginning to protest again she sighed.

“Aya your team is the best in the village but I am still Hokage. Please don’t make me

order you to accept him,” she said warningly. Aya sighed knowing she’d been defeated.

Nodding sullenly she just nodded her agreement for the new member. “Good,” Tsunade

said relieved that she wasn’t going to have to fight Aya over the new member. Turning

to the guard always at her side Tsunade nodded her assent to send him in. Everyone

turned to watch as the door that they’d entered from opened.

“Sereku Hazaka,” Tsunade said turning to look at Aya. “He’s twenty-two and six

feet tall. The rest I’ll leave for you to discover on your own. Since he’ll be living with your

team from now on as he’s part of it I’m sure that won’t be too hard to do.” Aya nodded

dutifully before turning grudgingly to have a look at her newest team member. He was

six feet she noted with jet black hair that was cut short and gelled into a lot of tiny

spikes. His clothes as far as she could tell seemed to consist of a silver shirt with a high

collar that wrapped around his neck, with an edge that was just below his mouth; navy

colored pants that covered the tops of his grey tennis shoes, silver clips at his wrists

that probably contained some sort of weapon, and a torn black cloak that accentuated

his frame rather than covered anything. The frame it accentuated was after a discreet

sniff noted to be human, and it was broad at the shoulders, yet slenderly muscled

everywhere else like a dancer.

Probably graceful Aya surmised at last as she continued her study, finally looking

up into the man’s eyes. Sereku’s eyes were framed by thick, dark lashes in a

fair–skinned face but it was the orbs themselves that had Aya looking back at Tsunade

with a frown. The eyes were pale, almost white blue, a shade lighter than Christie’s

eyes Aya thought absently. But where Christie’s were sharp Aya strongly suspected

Sereku was blind.

“Is he blind?” Aya asked Tsunade softly.

“I can see fine,” Sereku answered in a deep voice that had Aya turning around

quickly to stare at him. She blushed with embarrassment and nodded slowly wondering

how the hell a human had heard her from by the door. While Aya was trying to

understand what the hell was going on Tsunade spoke again.

“I trust he meets with your approval?” Aya shrugged.

“He’s human so that automatically stops him from meeting with my approval,”

Aya stated calmly, “but since he’s stuck with us and we with him I guess we’ll make do.”

Tsunade sighed in exasperation before shaking her head.

“Just take him back to the house and show him where he’ll be sleeping,” the

Hokage said resisting the urge to rub her temples. Talking with Aya always gave her a

headache she decided as she watched the team get to their feet and troop out with

their newest member in tow.
