It was a beautiful fall day in the city of Konoha. The weather was warm, only requiring a light jacket for most people to be perfectly comfortable. Normally this would mean everyone was in a great mood and enjoying themselves in one of the many parks scattered around the city.
However, there was one thing weighing down the moods of just about every young person in the city. Today was the first day of the new school term. Students were dragging their feet everywhere you looked, and the closer you were to the local school, Sengoku High, the worse it was.
Well, there was one exception. One 3rd year student wearing shorts and a t-shirt of the exact same shade of green and sporting a head of pitch black hair fashioned into a bowl cut was standing in front of the gate. He had one hand clenched in a fist, and anyone standing close enough would notice his eyes had a fire in them, such was the heat of his passion.
“Yoooooossshhh!!! The new school term is finally here! This year, Sakura-san will agree to go on a date with me!!”
Almost as soon as he finished this statement however, a smaller fist hit him over the head, hard enough that he was forced to bend over a bit. The fist belonged to a girl wearing the standard sailor-style uniform of the school. She was about as tall as the average boy’s shoulder, and had an attractive figure. Her hair was somewhat odd however. Due to an interesting quirk in her genes, her hair is naturally pink.
“Dammit Lee, can’t you at least wait till lunch to start in on this crap?! We haven’t even met our new homeroom teacher yet! No, I refuse to go out with you, just like I’ve been refusing for the past 2 years! Go bother someone else!”
With that, Sakura Haruno stormed off, already remembering just why she hates school. All Rock Lee could do was watch as his crush walked away. All the other students walked around him as he visibly deflated under his own personal cloud of gloom. Suddenly he felt a hand on his shoulder.
“Man she was really hard on you there. Are you ok?”
At hearing these words of understanding, Lee’s posture shot back up and he turned around to address the kind boy who took precious time out of his day for him.
“Oooo!!! Such kind words directed towards one you don’t know!! Surely the flame of your youth burns brightly! Do not concern yourself stranger, it will take far more than that to make me give up on my Sakura-san!! Now we both best hurry, or we’ll be late on our very first day!”
After his rather impassioned oration, Rock Lee ran off in the direction of his classroom, leaving a trail of dust and a temporarily stupefied boy behind him. The boy was tall for his age, standing just under 6’, with a muscular build. He wore the boys’ uniform of a plain white shirt tucked into plain black pants, but over it he wore an open black coat that went down to his knees. Stylized with orange flames at the bottom and sleeves the coat, combined with the black headband keeping his bright blonde hair out of his blue eyes, made him seem something like a punk. He adjusted his pose, spreading his legs and crossing his arms over his chest, and took a look at his new school.
‘Heh, not even five minutes here and already I met an interesting guy. This might be fun after all. Well nothing else is happening here, might as well greet my new classmates.’
“Aaaahhhh where the hell is this bastard!!” The pink haired girl, Sakura, was obviously furious with their predicament. Everyone glanced over to her, but their gazes didn’t linger. Outbursts like this were commonplace with her.
“Shut up Sakura, I was in the middle of a nap. It’s not like we’re going to learn anything today, so what’s the difference if he shows up or not? The only reason I’m even here is because of my troublesome mother…I swear she’s half banshee.”
“You shut up Shikamaru, it matters because homeroom will be over in 15 minutes and he’s still not here! Being this late when you’re supposed to be the first one here is unforgivable!”
“So troublesome…..”
With that, Shikamaru put his head back down to catch what little sleep was left to him. Almost everything about him was deliberately average. His wasn’t tall, but he wasn’t short either. His build was slender. He didn’t appear out of shape, but he wasn’t muscular either. Even his uniform was the average, not stylized at all. The only unique thing about him was the way he kept his black hair. Combed back to reveal his entire forehead and tied in a odd ponytail sticking up behind his head, it resembled nothing so much as a black pineapple.
Sakura was about to yell at him for sleeping during class time, but as soon as she opened her mouth, the door opened. Everyone stopped talking and looked for whoever was about to walk in, hoping it would be their teacher at last.
The first thing the students noticed about their ‘teacher’, was the face mask he wore, covering everything below his eyes. He had a mass of spiky silver hair, which was premature since the rest of him seemed to be in his late 20’s. The worst part about him, though, was the fact that he walked in reading a small orange book. The teacher put his book down on his desk, and wrote his name on the blackboard.
“Hello class, nice to meet you. My name is Kakashi Hatake, and I will be your homeroom teacher, as well as literature. Before I call roll, I have a new student to introduce to you all. He just transferred in for the start of this term, so everyone treat him well ok? Alright you can come in now!”
As the new kid walked in, Lee, who was also in the class, sat up straighter. It was the same boy who talked to him at the gate.
“Ooo it is you! Let me introduce myself I am---”
An eraser was flung at his forehead, cutting off the energetic youth. Kakashi-sensei apparently doesn’t tolerate interruptions.
“Time enough for that later Lee-san, for now just sit quietly please. Now if you would continue, naruto-san?”
The blonde boy erased Kakashi’s name from the board, and replaced it with his own. He wrote in absolutely huge letters, leaving not a shred of space left on the board.
“My name is Uzumaki Naruto! I like ramen, and hate people who pick a fight for no reason, as well as people who don’t stand up for themselves. I’m looking forward to our next two years together!”
A/N: well there you have it, chapter 1 of my very first fic, please feel free to read and review! I’m sure it’s not perfect, but I will try and improve as I go on.
Some quick notes:
I chose to use the suffixes attached to names in Japan, so I’ll explain the ones I used so far, just in case anyone is unfamiliar with them.
-san is a suffix used to express a certain level of respect, usually towards strangers or co-workers (in this case fellow students I guess) and is similar to Mr. or Ms. here in America.
-sensei is used towards teachers, or instructors of some sort
Also, not using a suffix in Japan is either a very rude thing to do, or a very intimate thing to do, depending on how well the two people know each other. Shikamaru didn’t use a suffix towards sakura because I’m going to make them close friends in this story(well that and shika is the laziest person you’ll EVER see lol)

--------30 minutes later-------
Homeroom was nearing its end, and most of the students were ready to move on to meet their next teacher of the day. There was a small problem though. They haven‘t even met their first one yet. No one that even looked like a teacher has walked through the door yet.“Aaaahhhh where the hell is this bastard!!” The pink haired girl, Sakura, was obviously furious with their predicament.
