Lee had always loved the color green. Green was the color of the trees outside his bedroom window and the flowers in his garden growing up. It was the color of spring and youth. After hearing taunts for years and being pushed aside as a waste of time, it was a man decked in green that found him and taught him. He eventually earned his own green suit. Every morning he would dress in his favorite color and smile at the reminder of his sensei.
Green was vibrant and alive. It went with everything. Curry came in green. In the sand wastes of Suna, green was a warm reminder of his precious Konoha.
Even the first pair of eyes he had fallen for had been a vivid green.
Lee had never liked red. Red was the color of blood and pain. It was the stains on his bandages when his body failed. Red was the color of opened gates and lost battles. It was his life draining onto the ground. When his body had been crushed, the last thing he saw was red.
Red was the color of unfulfilled love and passion. It was the color of rejected roses. Love had not been kind to Rock Lee.
But things change. Even favorite colors.
Lee trailed his fingers through the hair of his precious person while the other slept. The blood red locks slipped through his fingers, as smooth as silk. This red was the color of new found trust and friendship. It was the color of returned love and passion. Red was now the color of first kisses and youthful partnerships that defied explanation.
Wrapping his body around that of his precious person, Lee pressed his cheek against Gaara's hair.
Red was his new favorite color.
