Chapter 8: One Step into Oblivion

A/N's: Wow, I'm proud at the rate that I'm cranking these chapters out. As much as I do enjoy writing every single day, and sometimes twice, I do have a lot of real life stuff coming up that will probably slow this down a bit. I do promise you that I will update at least once a week though (probably more right now since I'm hit with way too much inspiration). Also you might have noticed that I change the short summary description. I like this one much better, it is much more representative of the fic.

I do have spoilers in this chapter. I also have jumped on the “Fourth Hokage was Naruto's father” bandwagon. I've thought that for a very long time, but I have never actually put it in a fic. And I am REALLY sorry for Kakashi. You will understand at the end of the chapter when you say, “Why did you sissify that studly piece of man-meat? Damn you LemonDrops, I'm going to kill you!”

Disclaimer: I do not own Naruto and do not make money off of this fic. Naruto is property of Masashi Kishimoto, give him love...buy his works.

Kakashi's breath stopped, it just halted and didn't return for several seconds following Sakura's question. “A pregnancy what?” was the words that finally stumbled from his lips.

“A pregnancy seal…I forgot my bag with my condoms in it at your place.” She said it with such casualness that Kakashi assumed that she wanted him to perform the seal so she could go join two other younger members of Team 7.

“Fine,” he grumbled. She looked at him inquisitively as he roughly pulled up her long, red shirt. It was reminiscent of the one she wore in her youth, but had mesh replacing key areas that he wished were covered at the moment. Shoving the material into her hands, and nonverbally instructing her to hold it with only a grunt, he laid his hands on her soft, warm belly. He found the chakra line that he needed and performed the necessary signs to seal her and ward off unwanted children. She gasped as a tingling pulsed from his hands into her belly, filling it with a warm and satisfying sensation. He too couldn't help but be affected by the ninjutsu as he let out the softest and lowest of moans.

Kakashi removed his hands from Sakura's skin and began to walk back toward Kanoha. He would have leapt off in a blinding ninja pace if he hadn't assumed she would think it highly rude and offensive. He heard her release a small giggle as she grabbed his hand and asked, “Where do you think you are going?”

“Home, I have things to prepare for,” he didn't want to be rude, but she really was starting to irritate him.

“But Kakashi…” her voice was very quiet and sounding almost like she was pleading for him to give her something. He didn't want to know and let out a scoff tinged with bitterness. Sakura figured that it was the jealousy getting the better of him, and not the fact that he didn't really understand why she had pulled him into the back of the forest. “He does love you. He told me so himself. But he also said that he can't choose.”

Kakashi strained against her words, he hadn't even been concerned with Naruto and their odd open relationship. The mission had weighed too heavily on his mind, but now it came with the added frustration of knowing that Naruto had proclaimed his love of Kakashi to Sakura. “What are you talking about Sakura?”

“He told me that he loves you…that he loves all of us. Not just as a friend or a mentor Kakashi, but as a lover. He loves you. He truly cares about you, so don't throw it away. I know because I feel the same, I could never choose.” Kakashi was suddenly aware of Sakura's presence against his back, leaning into him and reaching her arms around his chest. “I could never choose between the three of you, I love each of you for reasons different than the other. Naruto said it best…I love you for your strengths, for your weaknesses, and for the love that you have given me.”

`Three of you?' Kakashi's mind spun. `Naruto is one, Sasuke is two, and number three was…' Kakashi let his mind calm under the light embrace of his former female student. Was Sakura telling him that she LOVED him? Sakura, the one who had been fighting him for dominance at every turn since she turned twenty? Sakura, the one that had caused his heart to break a little when she too began sharing Naruto? Sakura…she loved him?

Kakashi wanted to turn around and hold her back, he wanted to kiss her fiercely, and he definitely wanted to rip her clothing off and make love to her like he had thought about so many times in his fantasies. But he didn't listen to his heart, he idiotically followed the advice of his head and pulled her arms off of him. Kakashi pushed the kunoichi hard against a tree trunk. “It is stupid to fall in love, dangerous and foolish. A good shinobi should know this Sakura. What I have with Naruto is because of an attraction, not because I love him.”

He had thought that this warning would ward her off like a seal does to a demon, but Sakura was no demon and she saw right through his act. “You lie, Kakashi! You are a stupid, ignorant liar, who for reasons I do not understand refuses to allow himself to be loved by those that are most important to him!” The tears were streaming down her cheeks. This made his heart ache furiously, confirming the insults that she had just accused him of to be nothing less than truthful.

“And what if I am a liar?” He bellowed back at her. “I do have reasons, and they are ones that YOU would never understand in a million years. You have never lost those that you love the most. You have never had to deal with something precious being taken from you!”

Kakashi's rage frightened Sakura, but the thing that made every bit of her heart shatter into a thousand pieces were the small number of tears being shed by the strong and capable man before her. Only a few drops, not sobbing or bawling like Naruto used to do, but several tears of remorse. Kakashi inches away from her body (which was wrenched against a tree thanks to him) crumpled to his knees. She watched as her former sensei broke beneath her. Kakashi was right, she didn't know…she didn't understand.

She knelt down beside him and removed the wet mask to reveal a heart-wrenching sadness painted on his features. Cupping his face with her slender hands, she imparted the only advice that was needed. “Just because you refuse to allow yourself to love, doesn't mean that you aren't loved in return. You cannot protect us by pushing us away. We are stronger than that and the love we have for you is more powerful than this doubt you have.”

Rin…Obito…he was not serving their memory well, nor was he honoring the father of the man Kakashi loved. His old sensei would be very cross at him for this, very cross indeed. “I don't need to protect you, do I?” Kakashi asked Sakura. “You are strong enough to protect yourself. You are all strong enough.”

“Yes we are Kakashi, we have been for a long time. So please quit fighting this, it is doing nothing but hurting you.” Kakashi allowed himself to be held by the beautiful young woman as Sakura calmed him like she had the previous night as she ran her fingers through the silken stands of his hair as the two were locked in an embrace. He was starting to become addicted to the consoling stroking that she imparted on him, and he was starting to become addicted to so much more.

A/N: Short angsty chapter. I apologize, but it's where the break lies. I hope I didn't offend you too much with crying Kakashi. It just felt right to write. :) You have no idea how I want to write Sakura and Kakashi getting it on together, but the story always turns and takes another detour when I want it to get straight to the point. GARH!
