Return To Silent Hill
Chapter 7
Unexpected Occurrences
They moved quietly as they made their way through the darkness. The beam of their flashlights cutting through the curtain of black as their feet ate up the parking lot cement to get to the other side of the motel. Itachi scanned the area to the right side of Kitty as she watched in front of them. Beth had lookout to the left as Hayate picked up the slack from behind. The necklace around Itachi's neck grew slightly warmer against his chest. He listened carefully but couldn't hear anything but silence.
“We need to find cover.” He stated softly.
Kitty glanced at him as her pace quickened. She didn't bother asking questions. Itachi's intuition had been accurate so far so she wasn't going to start doubting it now. The building loomed up before them. Itachi went to the nearest door as Kitty pushed Beth over next to him. She turned to face the parking lot with her flashlight illuminating the darkness. Her gun positioned for firing. Hayate moved in next to here with the handgun cocked and ready. Itachi and Beth protected behind their backs.
“Oh shit.” Kitty whispered as three creatures started to come into the light.
They were the same as the one she had blasted earlier before the darkness had swallowed the town. She glanced behind her quickly to see Itachi struggling to find the right key to fit the dead bolt. Beth let out a gasp; bring Kitty's attention back tot the creatures. Five more had appeared behind the first three. Panic started to rise in Kitty's chest as the reality of the situation kicked in. With a shotgun and a handgun, there was no way they were going to take out all eight monsters. Fear started to penetrate her body as her limbs started to shake violently.
“Above us.” Hayate cried out.
Kitty glanced up to see two of the flying mutations Itachi had killed. “Fuck! Itachi!” She almost screamed as she fired off the first shot at the closest creature.
It was a lucky shot and she sent the bullet straight between its beady little red eyes. It hit the pavement dead instantly. Blood soaking the cement under its unmoving mutilated body. Kitty sucked in air, not realizing she had been holding her breath. She took a step backwards. Her back now pressed against Itachi's. He was to busy struggling with the door to comment, which she was grateful for. Just feeling him there seemed to steady her nerves if only a little.
“Got it.” Beth shouted as Itachi pushed the door open.
Kitty felt a strong arm wrap firmly around her waist as she was hauled inside the room. She let out a cry of surprise, the flashlight slipping from her right hand to land at her foot. She gripped the fabric of Itachi's shirt in replacement. Beth pulled Hayate in by his arm and slammed the door shut behind her, locking it securely. Itachi forced Kitty's hand off his clothes, his brow crinkling in concentration at the fact that he had to do this twice in one day. The girl really was an annoyance but he could feel himself softening and he didn't like it. She backed off, trying to catch her breath.
“Well, that was quite aAAAHHHH!” She finished on a scream as something grabbed her from behind.
Hayate reacted on instinct. The handgun fired hitting the tall creature in the shoulder making it let go of Kitty and stagger backwards. A horrible crying screech filled the room as if the monster was in pain. Itachi reached for Kitty's hand, pulling her behind him as he took the shotgun from her. He cocked it and pulled the trigger after aiming for the creature. On impact, the bullet tore through the flesh of the monster's head and it exploded everywhere. Beth, Hayate, and Itachi were covered in flesh and brain residue.
The body hit the floor convulsing as Kitty fell against the wall breathing hard. Silent tears streaming down her colorless cheeks as she stared sightlessly ahead of her. Her body was trembling and it was getting worse by each passing second. Her knees felt weak and threatened to give out from under her. Her arms were folded over her chest gripping the other arm's bicep brutally. Itachi turned to her, feeling slightly bad. He had been so preoccupied with calming his own adrenaline that he hadn't even noticed the heat his pendant had been radiating against his flesh.
He sucked in a quiet breath, not realizing how hard her tears would hit him. Without even thinking about it, he pulled her shaking body against his as her tears turned into loud sobs. He held her tightly as he glanced at the lifeless creature on the grating.
They hadn't seen one like this one yet and he really didn't care to ever see it again. This monster's flesh wasn't rotting like the others. It was actually covered from head to feet in a thick layer of flesh. It looked human except for it had no arms. There was also a huge mouth like opening from it's pectorals down to it's waist with jagged bloody teeth on each side of the opening.
Itachi's head snapped to the wall where Kitty had been leaning on earlier. There was blood smeared all over the plaster. He ran a hand along the girl's back lightly. She tensed in his arms but didn't pull away. Her breath caught as if she was in pain. He lifted his hand to see it covered in fresh blood. Kitty's fresh blood. He pushed her away from him as he stared down at her tear stained face. She looked at him with watery eyes.
“Take the sweater off.” He commanded.
She did so with shaky hands, wincing in pain as she slid it off her shoulders. The fabric rubbed harshly at her raw wounds. She let the sweater fall to the floor from her trembling fingers. Itachi placed a hand firmly on her shoulder, spinning her around to face away from him. He winced when he saw the gaping teeth marks that had marked her flesh deeply. The back of her corset completely shredded except for the top couple of inches of material. Blood was rushing from the holes, trailing down her back. Her jeans turning a dark brownish color as it soaked up the liquid.
“Oh my god.” Beth breathed in horror.
Hayate looked on silently. His face an ashen color as he took in the damage the young girl had sustained. Itachi turned to Beth who was now wearing the backpack. She looked up at him with her own tears brimming her eyes at her friend's damage. Itachi felt irritation rise in his chest. One female crying was enough for him. He didn't want to deal with two of them.
“See if there is a first aid kit in the bag.” Itachi ordered Beth, hoping to distract her from her own tears. “Keep an eye out Hayate.”
“Yeah.” His friend answered absently, still staring at the dripping wounds slightly nausea.
“Hayate!” Itachi snapped breaking the other man out of his terrified trance.
“What?” Hayate answered, surprised. “Oh yeah…sorry.” He said sheepishly.
Itachi was on his last straw. His nerves were shot and apparently, he was the only one here who wasn't collapsing in fear. He glanced back at Kitty. She wasn't crying anymore and the trembling seemed to lessen some but she was still spacing out. He vaguely wondered if that was her way with coping with the pain. The wounds were too vicious looking to not be painful. Beth appeared at his side with medical supplies.
“Here.” She whispered.
He took the kit and set it on the desk behind him. He opened it and looked through the useless mess of medical ointments. He scoffed at the selections and picked up the ace bandages. He unrolled it and was happy to see there was plenty to wrap around Kitty, covering her wounds. Kitty moved toward him without needing to be told so. Itachi held the end of the wrap against her shirt just below her breast.
“Hold it.” He commanded her.
She raised her hand up to replace his. She hissed out in pain each time the bandage touch her raw bleeding flesh, but Itachi ignored it. The pain couldn't be helped if they were going to protect the wounds from infection. After he had completely wrapped her back down to the waistband of her jeans, he reached out grabbing a couple of bandage clips and secured them into place so the wrapping wouldn't unravel.
“Thank you.” She whispered.
Itachi only nodded slightly as he turned back to the kit. He rummaged through it and found four packages of aspirin, each package containing two little pills. He handed it back to Beth and then leaned down to pick up the flashlight Kitty had dropped earlier. He came up beside where Beth had placed the backpack. She was a little unsteady on her feet and her features still looked deathly pale.
“She's lost a lot of blood.” Itachi told Hayate softly.
“What should we do?” The man whispered back as he too glanced at the girls.
Itachi glanced at the bed. “We can't stay here. In addition, that monster is starting to stink up the room. She's going to need to rest soon though. She needs time to supply her body with the blood she lost.”
“We don't really have that kind of time.” Hayate countered looking concerned.
“I know.” Itachi said bluntly. “Just keep a close eye on her.” Itachi moved away from his friend as he started to explore the room.
He pulled open drawers, seeing nothing interesting. He pushed them closed and moved toward the bathroom. He shinned the light around, taking in the small room. He almost laughed when he saw a medium size hole in the ground where the tub use to be. This place really liked holes. He shinned the light down it and could distantly make out the bottom. It was either a basement or a sewer line that ran under the motel. He moved toward the doorway, pointing the beam of light toward Hayate's feet.
“Are they still out there?”
Hayate turned toward the window, pushing the curtain aside. He shined the light out it. A creature slammed its face against the glass, teeth exposed, saliva dripping from the sharp tips. Hayate quickly shut the curtain as he snapped off his light. He stood there for a second trying to catch his breath from the fright of the creature, his heart slamming against his chest hard.
“Well?” Itachi asked with impatience lacing his deep voice.
“Yep. I think they may be throwing a tea party.” Itachi rolled his eyes, his control gone.
“Smart ass.” He muttered under his breath and moved back into the bathroom. “Come here.” He snapped.
Hayate did as told even though he was getting tired of Itachi's attitude. He knew the younger man was tired because that was the only time Itachi got snippy. Normally the man just ignored everyone. He entered the bathroom behind his friend and stared at the hole in the floor. He snapped his dark eyes up to the Uchiha's face, who was watching him expectantly. Hayate's eyes narrowed.
“You're not expecting us to go down there are you?” Hayate's voice held a note of caution in it.
“What else do you suggest? We can't really stay here. We have to consider Kitty.” Itachi stated, tiredly.
“That's exactly why we should stay here.” Hayate retorted, testily.
“How long do you think it will take for ten monsters to get from out there to in here?” Itachi hissed out in growing rage at Hayate's defiance.
Hayate paled at that, and then he looked down at his feet dejectedly. “I'll go get the girls.” He mumbled.
“It's okay. We're ready.” Beth answered from behind him, placing a comforting hand on his forearm.
“I'll go first and make sure it's safe.” Itachi informed, and then disappeared in the hole. Hayate pointed the light down the dark hole to see Itachi about fifteen feet at the bottom. “Hayate come on.” The younger man called to him.
“Here.” He handed the gun to Beth. “Just in case.”
“Yeah.” She said with a shaky nod but she stared down at the gun.
She had no idea how to use it. Sure, she had played plenty of video games where she kicked some ass at shooting things up but this was different. This was real. This small contraption really took lives. She didn't quite know how she felt about that. Fingers gripped her chin lightly forcing her to look up into Hayate's comforting handsome face. He gave her a reassuring smile. His thumb lightly stroked her jaw line.
“They're already dead.” That small statement seemed to put her at ease.
“Yeah, you're right. Thank you.” She answered with a smile of her own.
He stroked her flesh one last time then let his hand fall back to his side. He turned back to the hole. He let his legs hand over the edge as he sat on the ledge. He placed both hands down on his right side and let his whole body go into the open space, his arms now supporting his entire weight. He lowered himself until he was forced to let go and fall the rest of the way, landing smoothly on his feet next to Itachi. He rose to his full height next to the smaller man. Itachi handed him the shotgun.
“Keep an eye out.” He ordered. “Kitty.” He hollered up the hole. Kitty's head appeared over the ledge in the light of the flashlight he had placed on the floor facing the ceiling. “Your turn.” He told her.
She looked uncertain but followed Hayate's lead on lowering herself down the space. He watched her carefully afraid that she wouldn't have the strength to do it because of her wounds. He was right in his assumption, for not even a second later one of her hands slipped causing the other one to follow suit. She didn't even have the strength to cry out as she came falling. Itachi was prepared though and easily caught her bridal style. Her dead weight almost brought him to his knees when she was safely in his arms. This is when he realized just why the girl had made a sound. She had either passed out when she was lowering herself or when she slipped.
“Is she alright?” Hayate asked from behind him.
“She fainted.” Was Itachi's curt response. “Get Beth.”
Hayate moved to take Itachi's spot as the man carried the girl off to the side. He glanced up the hole to see Beth trying to see below, but he knew it was probably near impossible when the light was glaring up in her face. He looked over at Itachi to see him prop Kitty against the wall. He turned his attention back to Beth.
“I'm ready when you are.” He called up to her.
“Okay, I'm coming down.” She answered as she switched the safely on the gun and put in her back pocket.
Hayate watched her lower herself fully down on the ledge. He studied her movements closely. As soon as her hands released the edge, he caught her easily. She clung to his neck tightly with her arm. Her face buried next to his. A shiver ran up his spine as a warm feeling pooled in the pit of his stomach. It had been a very long time since he had held someone this close. He hadn't realized how much he had actually missed it until now.
“Good job.” He told her softly as he rubbed her back reassuringly.
She was blushing as she slowly pulled away making his stomach muscles flutter as if a thousand of butterflies were dancing about inside. He felt his own face heat up as he came to the realization that he really liked this girl… a lot. He couldn't remember the last time he had actually crushed on someone the way he was with Beth. He dared say that it could be more serious then he would have anticipated.
A soft moan broke him from his star struck thoughts and he turned to face Itachi. Kitty was slowly starting to come back around as her eyes fluttered and then opened slowly. She looked disoriented as she took in her surroundings. Itachi was kneeling down by her side. He rose three fingers up in front of her face.
“How many fingers do you see?” He asked, flatly.
“Three.” She answered, squinting her eyes in confusion.
“What do you last remember?”
“Climbing into the hole.”
“What happened?' Beth demanded concerned.
“She passed out.” Hayate informed.
Beth paled and rushed forward, falling to her knees in front of her best friend. She reached up, petting at Kitty's face in the most loving way. Kitty seemed to relax under the gentle caresses. Her eyes falling closed as the exhaustion begun to set in. Her whole body ached. Her back was throbbing in immense pain and she was so weak. She didn't want to move because it would take to much effort and cause more pain.
“Are you okay?” Beth asked in concern.
“I'm fine.” Kitty replied tiredly.
“Are you sure?”
“Beth.” Kitty said sternly, lavender eyes now open staring up at her best friend. “I'm fine. Seriously.”
“Thank god.” Beth answered in relief. “Can I get you anything?”
“I just need to rest a moment.” Kitty stated, weakly.
Itachi watched her closely as he let the words sink in. Maybe she was worse off then he had originally thought. He rose to his feet as he pulled out a cigarette and lit it. He took a deep drag and exhaled the smoke slowly. He had no clue what he was going to do. If they didn't find some safe to rest soon. He feared Kitty was going to not make it. She would end up passing out and not waking for hours… or days, depending on how long it took her body to replenish all the blood it had lost.
“Oh man, I would die for one of those.” Kitty stated with a weak smile.
Itachi turned to face her only to see her eyes had drifted shut again. He could stop the slight tilt of his lips in an almost smile. This girl was something else. He may not like her but he had to respect her. She was one tough female. He knelt down next to her again, holding the smoke out to her as her eyes fluttered back open at his movement. She reached out and took it.
“Smoke it and try to stay awake.” He countered.
She smiled weakly in response. He lit up another one and sat down next to her so that his back was against the wall too. He had to admit it was nice to relax for a second especially after all the adrenaline that had been pumping through his veins. He just hoped they found some place safe. He didn't know how much longer he was going to last either.
TBC….
