Secrets

 

The breeze was cool as she ran through the trees and the light of the full moon was the only thing she had to navigate through the thick forest. “Find your target, focus and remove,” she thought to herself. She spotted the reason she was there in the middle of the night and crept closer.

It was dark, but Naruto could see a shadow lingering from behind the trees. His squad was on a mission and running extremely late, so he thought his mind was playing tricks on him.

“Naruto! Were you listening to me?” Naruto was abruptly pulled from his train of thought and he looked at his pink haired squad member.

“Sorry Sakura, I saw a rabbit in the bushes and sorta spaced out.” He replied nervously. She rolled her eyes, “I said that we need to pick up the pace, Kakashi-sensei and Sasuke are going to leave us behind!”

Naruto nodded his head and quickened his pace. He couldn't help but have the feeling that they were being followed. Sakura and Naruto ran to catch up with their comrades.

“Hey Sasuke,” Naruto whispered. “Do you have the funny feeling that we're being followed?”

“No, it's probably just your crazy imagination,” Sasuke replied. “Now shut up and keep walking, were almost there.”

Naruto sighed heavily, `Why does no one ever believe me?' he thought. `When I become Hokage, Sasuke will be the first one to pay,' he giggled to himself and walked a bit quicker as if Sasuke could read his thoughts.

“Hey Sensei! I can see the village from here!” Sakura cheered. “I thought we were never gonna get there.”

“Alright squad be on your toes now, you never know what surprises could be ahead of us” Kakashi silently gripped a Kunai knife in his hand and prepared himself.

She observed the target quietly, as if even the slightest motion could set of a bomb. `They're almost there, is it my time now? Maybe it can wait' she thought. `I can't mess this one up; everything has to be in perfect alignment.' And in a flash she was gone, disappearing in the shadowy forest.

“Sensei, are you sure this is the place?” Sakura wined. “I don't want to knock at some creep's house on accident!”

“Yes Sakura, I'm positive this is the right place.” Kakashi reassured. “Now who wants to knock on the door?”

“Move out of the way and I'll do it” Naruto said. “I'm tired and hungry and my feet hurt from walking so much so move!”

Everyone impatiently moved out of the way and Naruto banged on the door. “Open up! Let us in!” he yelled.

From the other side of the door, the squad heard the distant sound of walking. The door was opened by a young woman; she looked the same age as Naruto and the others. Her hair was brown and pulled back in a tight pony tail, to Naruto's surprise; she was even taller than Sakura, `She has a way nicer body than Sakura to' He thought to himself. She gave them a warm smile and causally said “Hey! I was wondering when you guys were gonna get here. My names Kara Fujicawa nice to finally meet you guys.”

“Hello,” Kakashi said. “My names Kakashi, this is Naruto, Saskue and Sakura. Are your parents here?”

“Nope, they aren't here right now. They're with the big man upstairs.” She gestured towards the sky with her finger. “You know God. But I'm here if you're interested.” Kara said.

“Oh I'm so sorry,” Kakashi said apologetically.

“It's okay,” Kara replied. “They've been gone for a wile, I've accepted it now.”

“So if you're parents are dead, who are you living with?” Sakura asked amazed.

“Just me, myself and I,” Kara said cheerfully. “Now I don't know about you guys, but I would like to go inside, c'mon.”

Kara moved aside to allow them in and the squad examined their new surroundings. The house was reasonably large based on the neighborhood it was in and they were standing in what appeared to be the kitchen.

“You guys can just leave your bags by the door,” Kara said with a smile. “I'm sure your hungry, do you want to eat before I show you your rooms?”

“Yes!” everyone said in unison. Kara immediately began to walk over to the counter to retrieve the four bowls awaiting her.

“I made dinner,” she called over her shoulder. “But since you were behind schedule, it sorta got cold. Let me warm it up for you.”

After a brief session of micro-waving, Kara passed out the bowls to everyone and got them drinks. As soon as the bowl hit the table, Naruto pounced on his and began to devour it. “Hey,” he said. “This kinda tastes like instant ramen!”

“Well, that's cuz it is,” Kara said blushing. “I practically live off it.” She opened a small cupboard to reveal boxes upon boxes of ramen. “I didn't think I would have time to make you a real meal, they told me you guys would be here at six so I panicked.”

“We would have been here earlier, if it wasn't for captain stupid over there.” Saskue pointed a thumb at Naruto, who was still in a daze from seeing so much instant ramen at once.

“What happened?” Kara asked, cocking her head to one side like a confused puppy.

“Well,” Sakura said. “We were walking along when Sensei sees a bear trap on the ground. He said, watch out for that bear trap you guys. But what does Naruto do? He steps in the bear trap and it took us two hours to get him out of it!!!”

Everyone enjoyed a laugh at Naruto's expense.

“Alright,” Kakashi said, still chuckling. “Let's stop laughing at Naruto and finish our dinner so Kara can show us to our rooms.”

“OK, you can just leave your empty bowls on the counter and I'll get them later,” Kara said. “Let me show you to your rooms.”

Kara led the squad down a short hallway. The hallway had two doors and at the end, a staircase. “The door to your left is the bathroom and the door to your right is my room,” She explained. “Upstairs are the guest bedrooms.”

After climbing the stairs, the squad found themselves in another bigger hallway with four doors. “Naruto and Saskue have the room to your left, Sakura has room next door, and Kakashi has the room next to that. I'm sorry I don't have a room for each of you.”

“Wait a minute!” Naruto said. “What do you call that last door?” He began to step nearer with his hand extended to turn the knob.

Kara ran to block Naruto. “I call that my parent's room,” she snarled at Naruto. “And you are to never go inside.”

“I'm sorry about that Kara, Naruto and Sasuke will be fine sharing a room,” Kakeshi said giving Naruto an evil look. “Thank you, we'll come to you if we need anything.”

“Kay, G'night you guys. You know where to find me!” she waved at them as she walked down the stairs.

`I have a funny feeling about that girl,' Sasuke thought to himself. `She is hiding something in that room.'

The squad wished each other goodnight and headed off to bed.

The sun spilled across the sheets as Naruto awoke to the smell of cooking. `Morning already?' He thought, `I was having such a nice dream.'

Naruto noticed that Sasuke already went down for breakfast so Naruto quickly got dressed and headed out the hallway. As he neared the stairs, something caught his eye, all night he couldn't stop thinking about what could be behind that door. He extended his hand, `I'm sure she wouldn't mine if I just peeked in the room.'

His fingers enclosed the small brass knob; it was incredibly cold and covered in dust as if he was the first person to open it in years. He was so close to uncovering the secret, he could actually taste it.

“What are you doing?” An annoyed feminine voice said from behind him.

Naruto practically jumped out of his skin from surprise, he quickly turned around to see an unhappy Kara standing in front of him. He gave her the old once over and then remembered the question.

“Uhhhhhhhh….I-I thought I saw something on the knob and was b-brushing it off! Yea that's it!”

“Yea Okay, breakfast is ready so let's go eat!” Kara said unusually perky. Naruto followed her down the stairs to get breakfast.

“Geez took ya long enough to get up.” Sakura said. “We're leaving in five minutes ya know.”

“What!” Naruto shrieked. He dove at the table and sucked down everything on his plate. “That was good thanks,” he managed to say after he finished.

“Ready everyone?” Kara asked. She walked over to the front door and opened it.

One step out the door was enough to make you want to run and hide. Kara's house may have been nice and big, but that was not enough to make up for the neighborhood. It was almost the lowest of the low, but there were a few shops here and there.

“Well, it isn't the best place, but its home.” Kara said with a smile. “Let me take you to your jobsite.”

“What are we doing here exactly?” Sasuke asked.

“Alright, it's complicated,” Kara said. “But I'll attempt to explain it to you. You see, the people in this village have been poor for years, and our mayor came up with a genius idea. This land is filled with nartural resources, and until now, we have been paying a manufacturing company to harvest and ship out these goods. What our village didn't know was that they were stealing a huge chunk of our profits. When we attempted to fight back, many were killed, including my parents.”

“So what's your mayors' genius idea?” Naruto asked.

“Well actually, it's not all that genius,” Kara replied. “That very plan has been sitting in front of us for years. We have some rundown buildings that we are going to use for manufacturing, you know with power tools and that stuff. Men come out here early in the morning to build parts and help harvest these resources. The original manufacturing company got mad and hired a gang of ninjas to keep watch on the village, so to speak. They want the land for their own use now; they want to get rid of everyone here. That pretty much means that everyone who disagrees dies. There used to only be a few ninjas here and there, I could totally handle em. But now there are way too many and I can't handle em on my own.”

“What do you mean `I can't handle em on my own'” Sakura asked quizzically. “Are you a ni-”

Sakura was interrupted by Kara, who put her hand over Sakura's mouth to silence her. Kara put her finger to her lips and nodded her head. `I knew it.' Naruto thought, `her reflexes were way too quick to not be ninja.'

“This is the place you will be patrolling,” Kara said. She motioned toward a large building. It was big, metal and old, and looked like if you sneezed in it, it would collapse. “This is the main place they decide to attack; practically everything sold here is made in this building. The parts for our machinery are built here and our resources are packaged, and then shipped out. In exchange, many other villages send us food, clothes, that type of thing. I'll help you when I can, but I'm needed at the village most of the time.”

“We'll be fine on our own!” Naruto said arrogantly. “We don't need help from a weak girl like you!”

“WEAK GIRL!?!?” Kara questioned. “I bet I could be you easily.”

Steam practically came out of Naruto's ears. “You think you could beat me? I'm gonna become Hokage when I grow up, ya know.”

“I'll beat you right now!” Kara yelled at Naruto. “I wanted a morning work out!”

“Bring it on!” Naruto yelled back. He charged at Kara with fierce determination. A smirk spread across Kara's face as he drew closer. He leaped off the ground at Kara in an attempt to kick her in the gut. She back flipped Matrix style and landed gracefully on Naruto's stomach. Naruto gasped for breath upon impact, she put her foot on Naruto's neck, bent over and said, “Still think you can beat me?”

Naruto didn't answer; he merely looked at Kara with rage in his eyes. “Well?” Kara asked. “I'm waiting for my answer.”

“I can't beat you.” Naruto said. Kara smiled, “Thank you!” she said happily. Kara stepped off of Naruto's neck and brushed herself off. He inhaled deeply, as if he had been holding his breath for hours.

“Yay Kara!” Sakura cheered. “Serves you right Naruto, you think girls can't do anything, but I think you were just proven wrong.” Kara giggled. “Anyway, I have some business to attend to, it will only take a little wile, and then I will join you Okay?”

It was dark out when Kara finally showed up. “I'm sorry you guys, they really needed me today.”

“What were you doing anyway?” Sakura asked. “What was it that took that long?”

“Two things,” Kara said. “One is that I have a job as delivery girl for the village, Two is I came up with a plan for you guys.”

“A plan, for us,” Naruto yelled. “We don't need your stinking plan!”

“I forgot to tell you this Naruto, but she is sort of a co-leader to you guys.” Kakashi said. “In the paperwork, it said that Kara needed help, not protectors. She just needed more ninjas willing to assist her.”

Kara smirked at Naruto. “All of the ninjas in this village were either killed or ran off. I needed someone to help me, and everyone in this village are all scaredy cats.”

“Go ahead Kara, were listening.” Sakura said.

“I need, in your opinion who you think is the strongest member of your squad.” Kara said to Kakashi.

“It's me!” Naruto said.

Sakura laughed. “You wish Naruto, it's totally Sasuke.”

“Don't I get any say in this” Kakashi said.

“ME!”

“SASUKE!”

“ME!!”

“SASUKE!!”

“Alright I'll go do it!” Sasuke said annoyed. “Will you two just shut up!” Sakura cheered and Naruto pouted.

“Okay then, Naruto, Sakura and Kakashi will stay here to patrol the building, remember there are still people in the buildings so don't let the gang get to close. Sasuke and I will go to the heart of their attacks.”

“Where is that exactly?” Sakura asked. She was upset that she just volunteered her Sasuke to go off with another woman.

“It isn't to far from here; just beyond the forest they have what they thought was a secret meeting place for their thugs. I found it one day and I of coarse couldn't barge in by myself, so now is the perfect time.” Kara could hardly contain her excitement; her mission was going without a hitch.

“Okay, let's do this!” Naruto exclaimed. “I'm getting sick of waiting”
