Naruto Fan Fiction ❯ So You Think You Can Save Me? ❯ Session 5 ( Chapter 5 )

[ Y - Young Adult: Not suitable for readers under 16 ]

Gaara lay on his bed. It was Saturday night and he had the house to himself. Temari had gone out with some friends. Kankuro had some party he was going to... to 'rope some tarts', as he so eloquently put it.
He sighed. Just what was he going to do to keep himself entertained all weekend... that was the only good thing about school. As much as he hated it, it occupied his time.
Rolling over onto his side, he looked out of his window. The Sabaku house was a large, two story house; nothing particularly flashy, but very homey. It's a shame it never really felt like home for Gaara. The sun had set and the stars were out. Because they lived on the outskirts of town, the lights of the town didn't block out the view of the night sky; something which Gaara was grateful for. Sighing again, he let himself get lost in his thoughts.

Unfortunately for Gaara, ever since he asked Neji why his eyes haunted him... well he couldn't stop thinking about those pale white eyes. But he wasn't even thinking of them in a good way. In all honesty the thought of them just made him mad... really really mad.
'I need a distraction....'
Gaara grabbed his sketchbook, threw on a jacket and started to walk.

His feet took him to the park in the middle of town. There wasn't many people here... really he was the only one sitting at a bench, everyone else was just walking through. However, he wasn't interested in the traffic of people walking around him. He was interested in the fountain in the middle of the park. Gaara didn't see this statue the way others saw it. To them it was a woman; helpless and afraid, cowering in front of a man, a savage wild man. No one noticed what Gaara saw in the statue. No one else noticed the moonlight rippling across the water, throwing a dancing reflection of the statue. Everyone just saw a vicious man attacking a defenceless woman.
"What do you see?"
Gaara jumped up, swearing.
"What the fuck are you doing here?"
Neji smiled at the boy.
"Well it is a public park. I come here often at night."
Gaara frowned, clearly not happy.
"So why the fuck are you bothering me?"
"Just curious as to what you see when you look at this statue... given your perceptions on life I am curious to hear what you see."
Gaara's frown deepened.
"Why?"
Neji cocked his head slightly, thinking about the best way to answer. The night was dark, and his features were obscured. The only source of light was the faint glow of the fountain lights, and the light given off by the moon,
"You want to know why I wonder? Hm, well I've said it before, but I'll say it again. Gaara Sabaku, you fascinate me. I want to know you and understand where you're coming from. Is there a problem with that?"
The night hid Gaara's blush.
"Stop fucking saying that shit. Like hell you want to know me. Just... just leave me alone. God. Isn't it bad enough I'm stuck with you at school. Cant I have a little piece on the weekend?"
Neji smiled faintly at the boy's ramblings. The funny thing was that Gaara hadn't walked away. Neji wanted to know why, and decided to keep pushing the boy. Neji slowly raised his hand, moving a lock of hair that had fallen in Gaara's face, his hand brushing over the smaller boy's brow.
"I'm not lying. I want to know you."
Gaara froze as Neji's hand touched him. Once again he got lost in those eyes. Then the hand drew away slightly, but not completely, breaking the spell. Gaara slapped Neji's hand away.
"Don't touch me." And with that Gaara turned and walked away, back to his house.

Neji smirked as he watched his patients retreating back.
'Oh, I'm totally going to beat this kid. I will know him... and he can't stop me.'

The rest of the weekend passed without much incident. Gaara decided he would not be returning to the fountain if Neji was going to be there. But god damn it, he wanted to paint that fountain.
'Ah well... I'll take a photo and use that I guess...'
As he made his way to his locker to get his things for Maths he noticed something strange and disturbing out the front of his locker. Something blonde and orange.
'This doesn't look good...'
Gaara carefully approached his locker, trying to avoid the strange person that was there. Unfortunately there was no way to avoid him.
"HIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIIII!!!!!! My names Naruto. Uzumaki Naruto, and I'm new here! What's your name?"
Gaara didn't answer. He just glared at the exuberant young fellow, with the hope that this would scare him off.
"Hmmmmmm not much of a talker are we? That's ok, I'll talk enough for the both of us! So I have maths first... what about you? Oh yeah, you don't talk right... well I can see your schedule... and YES! We have Math together... awesome! I can sit with you."
Gaara's eye twitched. This day was already hell.
"No."
Naruto's eyes widened as the other boy said something for the first time.
"Oh wow, you can talk! Ah well, we can talk more at maths."
Gaara's eye twitched more violently.
"No."
"Oh!!! Pretty please?!"
"Not a chance in hell. Leave me alone."
Naruto pouted.
"Oh you're so mean!"
"Whatever. Leaving now."

Naruto didn't leave Gaara alone all Math. Or through History. Or Geography. Or recess. Really... it was beginning to grate on Gaara's nerves a little stronger than he thought it would. When the blonde announced that he had Drama instead of Art, Gaara nearly cried with joy. Unfortunately, there was still PE between now and then... and it seemed like a class the energetic kid would really like.
'Fuck could this day get any worse?'
"Gaara Sabaku? Time for your appointment."
'UH! Thank GOD!!!! No... Wait... this is worse. Fuck.'
Naruto looked crestfallen.
"Ohhhhh Gaara-chan (Gaara twitches) where are you going?"
"Away from you. Now leave me alone."
"OHHHHHHH you big meanie!!!"

"Welcome Gaara. How are you today?"
Gaara glared at him.
"Worse than I was yesterday. Or even five minutes ago."
Neji smirked
"And here I thought our little meeting was the highlight of your day. I'm crushed... really."
Gaara's glare darkened.
"Whoa, ok calm down sonny. So, let's start shall we. Anything you wish to talk about today."
"No."
Gaara paused for a second... thinking.
"Actually there is."
Neji was surprised... and delighted.
"Of course. What is it?"
"Well you're an annoying guy. How do I make someone like you go away?"
Neji raised a shapely eyebrow at Gaara.
"What, trying to get rid of me? Not going to happen son."
"Not you dumbass... though if there was a way to do that I would. No, there's this new kid who won't leave me alone. Tell me how to get rid of him... please."
Gaara mumbled the last word, Neji almost missed it. He smirked.
"So, some one is bothering little Gaara are they?"
Gaara scowled.
"Hn. Well, to be honest if he is like me then he wont give up. Annoying people have a bad habit of being persistent. You might just have to put up with him until he gets bored."
"Well some great help you are. Really. Thanks. That helps me out no end."
"I'm going to pretend not to hear the sarcasm. Ok, anything else in particular you want to discuss?"
Gaara didn't bother to answer. Neji pretended that he did.
"No, nothing? Ok, well I have a question for you that's been bothering me. I want to know what you see when you look at the fountain in the park."
Gaara looked up at him, his eyes full of anger.
"Why? Why is that important for you to know?!"
"Because I want to know. What is it about telling me that you are so against?"
The anger in Gaara's eyes died briefly, before flaring back to life.
"Its none of your damned business what I see and what I think. Cant you just leave me alone?!"
Neji smiled.
"Nope, sorry, can't do that. Just tell me. When I feel you've given me a satisfactory answer, I'll put a little tick in this box here. That means 'Showing improvement'. Come on. I don't want to have to bribe you this way. I'm really interested."
Gaara slumped to his seat.
"What's the harm in telling me?"
Gaara sighed.
"Fine. Fucking fine. Will you drop it if I tell you?"
"Yes. I swear."
"Everyone else sees this hideous beast attacking the woman. But that's not what it is. When I look at it I see the slight smile that plays around the woman's lips; there's no fear there. Everyone else sees to woman pushing the man's hand away, but that's not what it is. The woman is reaching for the rose in his hand, inviting him to give it to her. And he isn't poised to attack; he's defending her, she is leaning towards him, in a deferential manner, not trying to run away. Everyone is judging the man because he looks scary, they aren't looking at his actions, and they don't want to see that they are wrong about him."
Neji was silent throughout Gaara's speech, just absorbing the sight of the boy. While it was clear he was reluctant to talk, his voice became stronger and more passionate as he told Neji how he saw the fountain; the real meaning behind it. Neji was struck by how beautiful Gaara looked; not in a romantic way, but in a feral wild kind of way; his eyes lighting up as he spoke of something he felt strongly about, the gestures of his hands, how his skin glowed with life. And all too quickly, it was over, and he was back to his usual, sour self.
"There. I told you. Now act like a shrink again so I can tell you to fuck off."
Neji chuckled.
"You really are a brat. But that's ok. I don't mind."
Neji put on his best "Psychologist" voice.
"So, Gaara. Let's talk about feelings . How does your interpretation of the fountain make you feel?"
Gaara snorted.
"You're so lame."
Neji smiled... he had gotten a reaction out of the boy that wasn't anger. He was impressed with himself.
"Yeah yeah. So you've said. So, any questions you want to ask me?"
Gaara frowned. Neji got a twinge of nervousness in his belly; this turned a little dangerous last time, but he wanted to see what would happen from now.
"So you really have no idea how to get rid of this Naruto kid?"
Neji smiled.
"Sorry dear. I really don't. Well that hour went quickly. I'll see you again soon Gaara."
"Yeah, whatever. See you."

Neji watched the door click behind the red head.
'Now that was interesting. He was being... well... nice. How very strange.... hmmm.. Maybe he's being done in by my overwhelming charm...'
Neji snorted at the ridiculousness of that thought.
'No way. He just wants to get out of here... oh well... I'm not going to make it easy for him.'

Gaara walked out to his usual spot under the willow, glad to have escaped from the blonde.
'Hm. Today didn't go too badly. Strange... Neji accepts what I say... anytime I've told anyone about how I see the fountain all they do is tell me I'm wrong... but he didn't... not once... Maybe he's actually different...'

Well there we go. Now I know this seems pointless... it really does, but its not. I say that all the time. I'm lame and slightly insecure lol... but I want people to know that these early chapters are really important to the plot. Gaara and Neji are building a relationship... and I don't just want to jump in the middle! But yeah... anyway, thanks to everyone who reviewed... I love ya! And I hope for more and more reviews too... the lack of them makes me sad lol.
