Chapter 6
Hinata was sure she was dead. The darkness had weighed her down, made her body feel like lead, it was difficult to even breath, as if an anvil had been placed on her chest. Everything hurt, her skin itched from underneath and she hadn’t the strength to do anything about it. Her only consolation had been him. In his arms it all seemed to be okay, that in the end she’d be able to breath again.
The sudden thought of him jumpstarted her. She clawed her way from the darkness, eagerly searching for the surface, for her light at the end of the tunnel. His face.
Her lids were so heavy, as if tiny weights were dragging them down. It was difficult to open them, but she had to. The first thing she noticed were the familiar ceilings, she’d seen them countless times for countless reasons. The next was the smell, medicine and of her own sweat. She was in the hospital, the beeping of her vital monitor was background noise in an otherwise quiet room.
She turned her head searching the area, her eyes fell on a beloved figure. His angelic face was carved in worry, even as he slept by her side. His arms were folded, with his chin resting in the crook of his elbow, facing her. Gently, without thinking, she ran the pads of her delicate fingers over the length of his face, smoothing out the wrinkles and tracing the lines underneath his eyes, an obvious sign he was lacking sleep. She let her hand drift to his unruly locks, smoothing back the baby fine strands.
The feather light touches must have stirred him, his eyes fluttered open, glazed with sleep. His eyes rested on her, his eyes still heavy lidded, he looked so cute half-asleep. Rapidly his bright azure eyes cleared and focused, he suddenly was leaning over her, his rough hand on her forehead. Her heart started, skipping a beat, he was so close she could feel his body heat, smell his wonderfully addicting scent.
“Are you okay?” His voice held a note of relief. “We were really worried about you. They said that you were at death‘s door.” Her skin was no longer clammy and there was color back to her cheeks. She was still too cold for his liking but at least she was awake.
“I’m fine, I’m sorry I caused you so much trouble….” A weak blush bloomed across her face.
He watched as her color rose over the bridge of her nose and cheeks. It was so damn cute and he was so relieved that he leaned over, his forehead touching hers. His eyelashes brushed against her infinitely longer ones.
Hinata wasn’t sure if her heart would be able to take much more of this, it was going nuts, the loud erratic beeping on the screen was clear evidence to that.
“I’m… I’m just really glad your okay.” Naruto whispered into her face, his warm breath on her lips. Hinata’s eyes slipped closed, anticipation building with each second that ticked by until…..
He leaned back abruptly, with a sheepish smile. His hand scratching the back of his head in embarrassment.
Hinata was positive that her face was so red that she could fry an egg on her forehead. Her heart rate had increased dramatically, palpitating and missing beats. She clutched at her gown above her unstable organ, praying that it calmed before he noticed. She looked down, to the side, anywhere but at him. “Um….”
The sliding door opened then, saving them both from an extremely awkward moment. Sakura’s pink head popped through the door, she walked in with medical pad in hand. She smiled brightly. “I’m glad to see your awake, Hinata-chan! How are you feeling?”
Hinata concentrated, an excuse to get her mind off of Naruto‘s nearness, her reflexes were significantly slower then usual, and her body felt stuck in lethargy, she was even more fatigued now that Naruto had caused her heart to react as if she’d just run a marathon. Hinata’s already heavy lids were becoming harder to hold up. “I’m really, really tired.” She whispered. She watched as Naruto’s brows drew low over his eyes in concern.
Sakura nodded. “Hm, you would. It’s going to take a while for your body to go back to normal. You’re going to be feeling like this a lot more, too. We got a lot of the poison out of your system, but it was so widespread, in such a high dose that we couldn’t remove it all. You’re lucky you’re alive. But for now your on powerful antibiotics, it’s going to take a toll on your energy and may make you sick to your stomach… But you should be okay.” She scribbled something on the paper and walked over, taking vital signs and doing a rather routine checkup. “By the way where is your family?”
Unexpected, Naruto answered that one. “They’re out of town, either on a mission or at some negotiation thing with another family. They’re being informed by one of my frogs.”
Hinata’s eyebrows raised, surprised Naruto knew that. She’s been about to leave with them when she’d been summoned by the Hokage.
Sakura was just as surprised as Hinata. “Well, I’m sure they’ll be over to visit later.“ She went over to the closet and pulled out a small bottle and a syringe.
The glint of the needle caught Hinata’s eye. At the sight Hinata’s body locked up, her pretty amethyst eyes widened in fear. The heart rate on the monitor increased, the blood rushing through her cold and fast, pulsing in her ears. She opened her mouth to scream and choked. Her porcelain skin draining to a deadly paleness.
Naruto, completely unaware of what was going on around him, grinned at the both of them. “After, Hinata-chan gets out of the hospital we should go and get ramen!”
Sakura was faced away from the girl on the bed and the boy standing next to her, so preoccupied with the conversation and the task at hand she didn’t notice the increased beeping from the monitor. She stuck the needle in the bottle and drew out the antibiotic, squeezing excess air out of the syringe. She turned a pretty care-free smile on her face. “Okay! But it’s on you Naruto!”
Naruto pouted, the pair still oblivious the girl’s plight, a grumbling mumble ensued. He didn’t even bother to argue, it was a moot point.
Sakura laughed walking toward the girl, a sudden keening whimper brought the attention back to her. They both looked at her to see that Hinata was in a state of near-shock. Her face was ashen, her already pretty, round eyes the size of dinner plates. She was hyperventilating, a cold sheen of sweat breaking out on her body.
Naruto, looked between the two, what had happened to cause this reaction? It didn’t make sense, she was fine a moment ago….?
Sakura took a step closer, sending the girl into hysterics. Hinata scrambled away until her back hit the wall, a loud thump marking her impact. Her lips were quivering, open as if on the verge of screaming but her throat was unable to process the horrific sound.
Sakura moved on instinct to help, almost touching the frightened girl. A loud, blood curdling scream echoed off the walls and pounded their ear-drums. Hinata’s small body was convulsing, her limbs flailing to ward off the approach of the dreaded needle.
Naruto looked around, shocked at the sudden turn of events, what the hell sparked this reaction? “Sakura, what’s going on?“ He boomed, authority in his voice. She was dazed, and absently shook her head, just as lost as he was.
Was it a reaction from the poison? How could that be? It was a paralyzing drug, anyone with half an brain and a thought process could understand that paralyzing drugs didn’t have this kind of effect. Naruto sniffed the room, using his sensitive nose to find some clue as to what the hell was happening. All he smelled were the anti-biotic, an array of other medicines, and Hinata’s over-powering smell of fear. The sour, ugly scent bit at his nose and made his stomach churn.
A spark went through Naruto, finally he put two and two together. It suddenly made sense, it was that damned needle! “Sakura! Get the needle out of here, now! She’d afraid of the needle!” Naruto grabbed the now thrashing girl, clutching her to him. “Hinata! Calm down! Hinata!” He continued to talk as calmly as he could to her, whispering reassurances.
Sakura, who hadn’t moved for fear of causing more trouble, dazedly looked at Naruto. What he was saying finally sinking in. Being a certified medic-nin why hadn’t she done something more professional then sit there stupidly? Taking the advice she bolted for the door.
As Hinata watched the needle disappear from her sight, the fire snuffed from her. Going lax, she turned into a mass of jelly, quivering from the aftereffects of the adrenaline. A sob echoed brokenly from her mouth, fat tears rolled down her cold cheeks
She was such a burden, just look at what she’d done! She caused nothing but trouble, she was simply unwanted weight on the backs of the people around her. She tried to turn away from Naruto, humiliated and disgusted with herself. She sobbed again, the sound was painful to hear. “I’m so sorry,” She whispered over and over again.
Naruto glazed down at the girl, he let go of her reluctantly, he was completely unaware of his actions of late, obviously. He’d never intimately touched someone, but for some reason he felt… drawn to her. Something about her gentleness called to him, made him want to grab her, tuck her safely under his chin and keep her as naive and innocent as she was right now, untainted by the world.
As another apology escaped her pale lips, Naruto grabbed her hand which she had tried to hide her face with. “Why are you apologizing?” He tugged gently, wanted her attention on him. When she didn’t turn he tugged again pulling her body to face him. More forcefully he repeated himself, “Why are you apologizing?”
She couldn’t look at him, shame washing over her in waves. “I can’t help but be burden to everyone around me… I’m so pathetic. All that over a needle…I’m supposed to be a ninja and I can’t even face a needle!” She was utterly useless, unworthy to wear the name shinobi, much less a Hyuuga. Tears cascaded down her cheeks, her heart was beating brokenly.
Naruto grinned, his boyish charm lighting up his face. “Hinata, just because you’re afraid of something that nearly killed you doesn’t mean you’re useless. You didn’t do anything wrong. You held off at least like seven rouge-nin by yourself, a couple were turned in and we actually made some money. Plus, Ero-sensei is back and getting caught in the women’s bathhouse.” Naruto made a sour face, that guy was seriously a dirty ass old man. He was dragged out of his thoughts by Hinata, she’d pulled his hand, trying to get hers free.
Suddenly he was hyper sensitive to the fact that Hinata was pressed against the length of his frame, her tiny hand clinging to his palm. He could smell her this close up, minus the medicine and poison circulating in her system, she smelled like fresh blooming lilies. The temptation to learn in and nuzzle into her hair was overwhelming. His body buzzed with newly awakening sexual tension. He breathed heavily to try and clear his mind. This happened more often than was normal. Maybe there was something wrong with him.
Unconsciously he leaned forward, breathing her in slowly. Hinata’s head turned slowly to gaze up into his face, her body was so worn out, the adrenaline leaving her system she felt slightly sick and she knew she wouldn’t be able to fight off sleep much longer. “Naruto?”
Naruto opened his eyes, not realizing he’d even closed them, they bore into hers. “Hm?”
Hinata turned her body to face him, she needed something, somebody. Her bottom lip trembled, biting it she forced her tears back. She gripped his shirt pulling him more firmly against her, she buried herself in him hiding from the world. Then she cried openly, letting her small frame be wracked by all her tormenting insecurites. The muffled sounds heartbreaking.
Naruto, surprised by shy Hinata’s actions laid there stunned. He panicked unsure of what to do, a blush heating up his cheeks. Until her he felt the broken tears and shudders that ran through her. All thought process flew out the window. Instinctually he wrapped his arms around her, curling his body around hers like a protective cocoon. He whispered reassurances in her ear and stroked her hair.
They fell asleep like that.
