Chapter One

A long, slender tongue wound its way around the self-exiled shinobi`s throat, slowly increasing pressure, the predator was enjoying the short labored intakes of air. A pair of inhuman eyes seared into equally soulless. A maniacal giggle poured from the evil being as he slid over his prey like tar.

When the suffocation was more then his body could take, Uchiha Sasuke's world steadily went as black as his condemned soul. The silence was a blessing, a reprieve from the voice that only seemed to grate on his nerves.

As the darkness welcomed him he distantly heard something he thought he'd long buried. From somewhere in the back of his mind he heard the voice of a twelve-year-old pink haired pixie he had once called friend.

"Sasuke...please!" A heart wrenching sob throbbed in his ears. "I beg of you! Please stay!" The silence was crushing her, he knew, he could nearly hear her fragile hopes splinter.
"I love you more than anything!"

His broken world shattered and fell, only to gather with the pieces of his heart at his feet. He had always known, but her pleading voice only confirmed his fear. He had chosen to ignore it for her sake. He didn't want to hurt them, but in the end he was forced to. He slowly turned to face the girl. Her expressive green eyes filled with desperate pleadings to stay here with her, with them all. He bowed his head, his hair hiding his face as he closed his eyes.

“Thank you.” The words were quiet and soft, they expelled the last remnants of truth and gratitude from him.

He used his speed to maneuver so that he was behind her, and then he quickly hit a pressure point that caused her to black out. He caught her as she started to fall and very gently, to avoid hurting her more then he already had, carefully laid her down on the stone bench. Unable to control his fingers, he brushed the silky pink locks from her eyes. Her face was peaceful, even as her tears continued to fall, perhaps even long after he was gone.

Damn training and damn Orochimaru anyways.

Sakura’s eyes suddenly snapped awake. Sitting up she opened her window to the night. A light breeze caressed her heated skin, she closed her eyes and tilted her head up while she enjoyed the refreshing air. Slowly, as she calmed down her frantic heart, she opened her eyes and stared up into the star-filled sky. The moon was round and bright as it cast the world in an unearthly, surrealistic glow.

Nights like these reminded her of a long harbored hope and love. Uchiha Sasuke. She leaned over and plucked a picture frame from the bed side table, right beside the fresh vase of forget-me-nots.

The four of them, Team 7, were all smiling. Even the passive Sasuke couldn’t help the slight tug on one side of his mouth. No matter how grumpy he looked his scowl was fake to anyone who looked close enough.

A single tear splashed onto the missing shinobi’s face.

Naruto rotated his shoulders, he was still recovering from the injuries earned from his last battle. His muscles were beginning to become tense from the lack of use. So much for them being “immortal.” By now he was sick of the staring at the damn hospital walls, they were an unbearable white, and being in a place with sick people was always depressing.

It had already been nearly two damn days and all that was left was a few minor abrasions and a couple nasty bruises. Naruto crossed his arms and legs as he pouted, his face clearly irritated.

Suddenly the door slid open and a familiar shade of pink graced the entrance. Sakura smiled up at the irate blond, Sai was a close second. The oddball had a cheesy smile on his face, too.

Immediately Naruto brightened up. “Oi, Sakura-Chan, Sai-kun, what are you guys doing here?”

Sakura promptly ignored his question and started in before Sai could answer. “How are you doing Naruto?”

Naruto grinned cockily. “No one can bring down Konoha’s number one ninja!”

“Good! ‘Cause the Hokage has requested your presence." She threw him a large faded green bag. “Your cloths are in there, now get dressed. We’ve already signed you out.”

Before long the new trio was standing in front of the big cahuna. The Hokage, leader of Konoha's ninja force.

The powerful woman was sitting behind her intimidating wood desk with her signature pointblank stare. Her weaved hands placed firmly and professionally in front of her.

"Before you begin, the report's already been done. I have already heard the story from Kakashi-sensei, so you need not tell me about the fight. Well done. Actually I’ve called you all in here for different reasons." She looked at them all. "Sai and Sakura, you will both be training with me on a few things. Sai, although you’ve improved quite a bit from where you began, you still aren’t fully adapted to your role in team work.”

Naruto watched as the ninja once again donned his obedient, vacant stare, then promptly nodded his head in recognition. Naruto rolled his eyes, oddball.

Tsunade addressed the younger female kunoichi. “Sakura, we are going to improve your overall performance. You have amazing strength and a sharp mind, but you lack your own true technique. Since you have talent and much potential in medical jutsu I am going to teach you some offensive moves and tactics to add to your defensive training. You know how to defend now you must learn to prevent.”

Sakura’s eyes became determined and excited. “Hai, sensei.”

“Oi, hag, what am I here for then?“ Naruto asked loudly, crossing his arms. He wanted to be training if he didn't have a mission to attend to.

Tsunade`s intense eyes took on an affectionate, albeit irritated, gleam when they turned on Naruto. “Okay, Brat, I’ll tell you. You’re going on a retrieval mission with Hyuuga Hinata.”

"What are we retrieving?" Naruto's eyes suddenly widened with interest.

Tsunade`s eyebrow twitched. “Let me tell you, Naruto. You and Hinata-chan will be going to the City of Sin to find Jiraiya-”

“Why do we need to find Ero-Sensei, though?” Naruto said as he sat on the large wooden desk cross legged.

Sakura nearly fainted at the sight.Didn't he know she'd have to pay for his insolence? Sai found it highly surprising and even slightly amusing. The boy held no fear.

Tsunade’s forehead presented a now throbbing vein. “If you would shut up I would tell you!” She gritted out through clenched teeth. “There is information we need from the old Perv-”

“Why do we need to bring him? Why can’t we just get him to write it down for you, or can‘t he just tell me?” Naruto didn’t see why she had to make this so difficult, nor did he see the looming fist rushing toward his face right before he was lodged into the opposing wall.

Hinata walked in to see Naruto’s unconscious body flying through the air. “Oh my!” Delicate fingers rose to cover her now open mouth.

“Ah! Hinata-san, you’re here! Good, now I can inform you of what you’re all doing.” She turned to Sai and Sakura, dismissing them offhandedly. “Come to my office tomorrow at noon. You have much work to do.”

Both Shinobi bowed before leaving.

Tsunade sighed and plopped into her over stuffed chair. “I called you in here because I want you to go on a mission with Naruto. You need to bring Jiraiya-sama back to me, the information he has is vital to Konoha. Do you understand?”

“Yes, Hokage-Sama.” Hinata uttered softly, her unusual eyes glued to the floor, what seemed to be a permanent stain of pink strengthening on her cheeks.

“You will be traveling through the Land of the Fire to the City of Sin. This is an extremely dangerous city which is why you are going with the protection of Naruto.”

“Yes, Hokage-sama, but why did you chose me if I may ask?” The shy girl’s voice was clear if not confident.

Tsunade smiled, Naruto was the only one she knew that could break Hinata’s shell open. Only one of her ulterior motives for this scheme. “Well Naruto knows the old man very well so he has a very good idea of how he acts. He also knows the man’s s. You are the brains of the operation, besides that, two men walking into town is a little more suspicious then a man and a woman. Right now you are the only available girl.”

A moaning Naruto sat up with his head in hand. “Hag, that really hurt…”

Hinata nearly giggled at the pieces of wall still embedded in his hair. “Are you okay, Naruto-kun?”

Tsunade snorted in a very unladylike manner. “That’s what the brat gets for not letting me speak.”

Naruto jumped up, pointing an accusatory finger at the woman. “Hey, old ha-”

A sharp, deadly look silenced any further sound from the boy’s mouth. “As I was saying, the City of Sin is dangerous and we can’t have two ninja gallivanting into town. So you are both going in undercover. This is an A plus ranked mission. Do not screw this up. Now you both need to follow me so we can get you proper clothing.”

Naruto, already peeved, wasn’t really big on changing. “What’s wrong with what I got on?”

Tsunade’s hand itched to ball into a fist and deliver the impudent young brat another blow. “Just come!” The three of them walked out of the office down the hall into the props room. Tsunade picked out an outfit from the rack and handed it to Hinata. “Try this on please.” Hinata bowed and went into the designated changing area.

Tsunade turned to Naruto and spoke loud enough for both of them to hear. “You can’t wear your forehead protectors into the city of course and I’m going to give you matching radio rings and a set of earpieces so you can communicate. Hinata, since you can literally see almost three-hundred-and-sixty degrees then you are going to inform Naruto of any danger.” She heard a muffled ‘yes’ from behind the door. Tsunade grabbed Naruto’s forehead protector, ripping it off, and ruffled his hair, attaching a clip on earning in the shape of a skull to hide the ear piece, then slid the ring onto his finger and handed him a pair of shit-kicking boots. The rest of the boy’s outfit was suitable anyways.

“U-um, H-h-hokage-sama, I-I’m not sure this is a good idea.” Hinata kept tugging at the skirt trying in vain to make it long enough to cover more

Hinata came out of the room, a blush adorning her face. The female Hokage gave her an analytical once-over. She had long since given up most of her extreme shyness. She was even able to be around Naruto without any fear of feinting, which was a helluva improvement. Hinata had donned the outfit and looked highly uncomfortable in it. She was wearing a purple low cut tank top with her signature black fish nets underneath, a skirt not very unlike Sakura-Chan’s, and pair of black flexible boots like Naruto's.

Tsunade walked over and placed the ear piece in her ear along with a pair of Crucifix earrings and a ring that also matched Naruto's. She smiled. “You two are going to play the Runaway Lovers routine, got it?”
